"...with every meal, there is the satisfaction of knowing that we don't have the Amaris regime trying to starve us out anymore..."
-Kowloonese Benediction, circa 2800

"My father believed in the Federated Commonwealth...well...he's dead.  so is it.  Your Brother sent me, he needs your help.  Not me....nobody can help me, but you can put blood ahead of what your advisors call 'national interest', save him."
-Elizabeth Ngo to Yvonne Steiner-Davion, Star League conference, 3066 (Apocryphal anecdote overheard in the ladies' room)

"...she was an interesting paradox-knowledgeable about history, charismatic, and born to die in a horrible, awful, unstoppable way.   I have seen Trueborn warriors weep with fear, heard them begging for relief from wounds that are not so horrible, fates less terrible than her bad genes gave her.  I would never want to fight her on equal terms....even the victory would taste like ashes.  I met a creature held together by will alone, frankly, I am glad she is dead...I only wish it had been a cleaner way to go-and that may be to my own shame, I could have offered her a dignified death, not one of screaming agony that lingered for days, trapped in a body wracked by siezures where even unconsciousness, even shock, could not provide relief..."
-Khan Nelson Elam, Clan Goliath Scorpion

"Liz used to be gentle, used to laugh, she made our time there...bearable.  That was before the Syndrome took her away... before Penny died."
-Daphne Rowe-Steiner, President Rim Worlds Republic

Death of Adrian, Clan Goliath Scorpion territory, 3067/01/27...

Nelson Elam looked at the InterClan Watch reports, and then at the star maps.

N'Buta...you bastard.  He grimmaced, and turned a stack of files-carefully copied from SLDF archives that had survived Nicholas Kerensky's document purges back over.

The report by the Adders of their visit to Kowloon-their failed attempt at taking that world, lined up with what the SLDF had run into there almost Three centuries ago-the main difference being, Nelson Elam would look at the history before committing anything to that world...

"Assemble technicians, Merchants, my Keshik, one warship and escorts."  He ordered, "I want specialists in medicine, commerce, and Languages, engineers, and warriors smart enough NOT to start fights on a diplomatic trip."

His 'Aide" was once known as Hauptmann Magritte O'Kearney.  She would never test back into the Warrior caste-a bad rejection spectrum and lower spinal damage prevented that...but she was superb at the paperwork tasks that kept even Warrior Caste units running.  "Aff, Sir, There is more, ja?" she asked.  Her accent was, of course, annoying-but she was definitely useful.

"Schedule a meeting of the Clan Council for one month from the Seventeenth, the subject will be alterations to our initial invasion corridor." Nelson told her.

"I see-you do not want to deal with the blerry 'loonies if you can avoid it, quineg?" She asked.

"Deal with them? maybe-fight them? I have no desire to turn my warriors into war criminals or worse." Nelson assured her, "I am going to see them for myself, see if the rumour is true, and see if we can make progress that does not require mass slaughter...besides, the record shows, the Kowloonese fought Amaris for Kerensky, but they were fighting for their own reasons, and when Amaris was gone, they went home.  I am interested in why...and how they may have evolved over the last three hundered years."

"YOU think there are artifacts in that system." Magritte said, "Quiaff?"

"Oh, AFF." Nelson agreed, "Undoubtably, I am rather keen to find out what, and how many."

Kowloon System, February 01, 3068...

"Welcome home, Your Grace." Commodore Alicia Li greeted Liz at the airlock.

"How bad is it down there?" Liz asked, "You aren't going to try and stop me from landing, are you?"

"Your Grace gives the orders, I can only give mere advice-I would advise against landing at Nha Tranh, the port's closed and it's our worst hit area.  Vin Drin Lap, on the other hand, is open for business, you can probably land there, and take a Coast Guard aircraft to the Capital, if that is your desire, Your Grace." Li said it with a mock seriousness-a shared joke.  Thirteen years ago, Elizabeth had 'come home' a child riding in with Mercenaries to oust a corrupt regent.

"I'll have that under advisement...when you tell me how bad things are in the Capital." Liz stated.

"Pretty bad-not like Arluna, thank God." Li answered, "We're getting innoculations distributed pretty quickly, and the treatments seem to be working-worldwide we only lost a few tens of millions-we're past the mass-graves stage."

"Then, I want that port opened." Liz said, "as soon as it is physically possible to do so."  she rubbed her abdomen, "Their father is coming, he should be arriving in a few weeks to a few months, and VDL's nice, but the port's not big enough to handle what he's to be arriving with."

"You're going through with it?" Li scoffed, "Lord, Your grace...in gods name why??"

"Because I was stupid enough to sleep with a man without using protection, and I got preggers on my first try." Liz said, "you know as well as I do that terming it's a sin-the word gets out I had an abortion and poof-there goes most of my moral authority, and with it, a huge chunk of legal authority.  As long as our people insist on doing things this way, I'm bound by tradition-but maybe...maybe they'll wake up and learn something from my example."

"You win, Your grace, If I may pilot you down?" Li asked.

"Yeah, that's a good idea..." Liz boarded the Mk VII shuttle...

Nha Tranh spaceport, 12 hours later...

"So...how long before you can reopen it?" Liz asked, walking with the CINC of the Coast Guard.

Li frowned, "Three weeks." She said, "at least, for official traffic.  Commercial's going to take another month, the Port admin's got to replace about half the Docker's guild locally-we could start hiring now, if there's budget."

"There's budget." Liz stated, "there is definitely budget."  They reached a parking structure, and entered it.  Two floors up, Liz opened the driver's side door of a 4-wheeled fuel-cell-powered Cadillac.

"I would prefer it if you accepted a driver, Your Grace." Li said pointedly.

"um...yeah." Liz demurred from getting in.  "You know I'm off my meds." She sighed, adding, "They're bad for the babies."

"Yes, Your Grace-and I don't think the other drivers would appreciate it if you pitched a fit in downtown traffic." Li stated bluntly, "Give me a few minutes and I'll have a driver here to take you home."

Fifteen minutes later, a Coast Guard jeep arrived, and a Marine was looking over Elizabeth's personal car, checking it for bombs, sabotage devices, and mechanical soundness.

"Do you know what the one, great thing, about this is?" Alicia Li asked Liz.

"What?" the Duchess asked, cradling a hot cup of tea provided by the Platoon's Gunny.

"I can finally put a serious security detail on you, and you can't object." Li said smugly, "Seeing as technically, I can claim it as a military necessity, and with the Coast Guard activated out of Reserve status, I have the full faith and credit of the Lyran Alliance to keep you from trying to relieve my ass."

"I knew there was a reason I was pissed at Peter." Liz groused, "I just forgot which one it was, thanks for the reminder."

Goliath Scorpion Warship Corona Borealis, 1 Jump out from Kowloon, 10 February, 3068...

"Tell me about her." Nelson Elam ordered his Watch adjutant.

"Where do you want me to start? Duchess Ngo is infamous in several ways." the Watcher stated, "Not the least being her early performance-she organized and led a military operation to remove the Regent appointed in her Father's absence at a rather young age."

"I have read that file, tell me what you have on her currently." Elam enunciated.

"I have interesting rumours.  Duchess Ngo does not live in a fortified strong-point, which is a pretty sharp contrast to how most Spheroid nobles live-she dresses below her station, by Lyran standards she is almost ascetic, she is known to work extremely long hours, and has written several books ranging from economic theory to historical analysis, including three that are harsh criticisms of the Lyran Military-but not 'peacenik' criticisms, she lambastes what she calls 'the boys club' mentality, the phenomena of 'social generals' and the laughable 'strategies' of our opponents..." the Watcher slid two volumes across the desk to the Khan, "Her analysis is very similar to our own regarding the structural defects of the Lyran Alliance armed forces, and some of her conclusions would fit well into the Founder's own regulations for the formation of Clan forces.  Her over-all thrust is different-she focuses mainly on a paradigm of conventional forces with what she terms 'force multipliers' in play-she is a big fan of artillery support down to the Battalion level, the use of mines in the offensive, and the importance of something she calls 'logistical coherence'."

"Meaning?" Nelson asked.

"Meaning she believes strongly in uniformity for equipment, and intense training to make up for any technological deficiencies-a focus on developing the Warriors over developing their gear." the Watcher's expression remained neutral, "She also favours and champions the idea of maintaining deep reserves and universal armament of civilians, along with training and proficiency maintenance...ideas that her ancestor also shared."

"I take it her ideas get little notice among Lyrans, Quiaff?" Nelson asked.

"Aff, you are correct, OvKhan-Liz Ngo is viewed in Lyan military circles as a bit of a kook-her ideas regarding cutting the number of designs in use, and reallocating manufacturing to produce standardized models are...not well recieved by the High Command.  The tactical methods and training standards she outlines are likewise not well-regarded, in spite of their successful application against Bandit forces over the last decade-an arrangement she has managed to keep 'barely legal' by using various dodges of the Militia Acts-the reports from Arluna, the Coast Guard troops? are not technically military in a fully legal sense, and strictly speaking, she had no legal right to deploy them to Arluna to assist in relief efforts there."

"And elsewhere?" Nelson asked.

"While her papers on military organization and structure get little to no attention, her books on economics are popular, if not overwhelmingly so, and some of her writings on governance have a following off her own world."  He straightened his jacket, "Especially among groups favouring a less...feudal...order, and of course, among Free-Market Capitalists and some anti-government groups.  Some of our own Merchant leaders have expressed a desire to see Ngo's books put on the blacklist, or at least on a restricted list, for the ideas they promote...the Jade Falcons, and a few of the other Clans, have already blacklisted or Gray-Listed a few of her books."

"Why?" Nelson asked.

"She's anti-Socialist, anti-Fascist too.  she promotes a model where the State does not own any enterprises, but instead maintains a semi-adversarial relationship balanced to provide a stable growth environment while preventing Monopolies or Oligopolies from forming...it is radical stuff, OvKhan, even for the Lyrans with their pretensions as Capitalists."  here, the Watcher opened a pamphlet, and read out...

"Governments are good at breaking things, killing things, forming armies, waging wars, and little else.  Government run enterprises tend to be saddled with Bureaucratic inefficiencies, combined with all the worst vices of private sector entities grown too large.  In a strong economy, Government interferes less, picks neither winner nor loser, but lets the market decide, and enforces stable, universal rules on all commerce that apply evenly, without favouritism or vendetta.  This means you have the right to succeed, but it also means you have the right to fail-catastrophically.  This is healthy and right..."  He closed it, "The whole thing reads like that."

"So...she makes a lot of enemies." Nelson observed.

"Aff, my Khan.  She is a superb political in-fighter, however-three attempts by the Estates General to bring her to heel have failed in the last ten years, she has openly defied two Archons-Melissa Steiner-Davion, and Katherine Steiner-Davion, and subverted the intentions of a third, that being Peter Steiner-Davion, by getting a major bit of legislation overturned, and of course, there was her performance at the false-Star League conference in late 3066."

"She Collapsed if I recall correctly." Nelson noted, "which brings up another point-how long can she last?"

"She could have lasted another ten, even fifteen years...but...our sources say she is pregnant." the Watcher said.

"What has that to do with it?" Nelson asked.

"Cholmann's syndrome-no woman on record with the syndrome has survived childbirth-it accellerates the damage the syndrome does.  If she is very lucky, she will die early in labor, assuming the pregnancy is not terminated."  the Watcher said, "Doctor Grant can fill you in on the gruesome details, needless to say Elizabeth Ngo's span as a potential adversary has been cut from over a decade, to less than nine months....but that brings up the rumoured father of the offspring she is carrying."

"Jaime Wolf." Nelson stated.

"Aff."
"If you have to ask permission, then it's no longer a Right, it has been turned into a Privilege-something that can be and will be taken from you when convenient."

Elizabeth House, 1324 Hong Street, Patrick Hills development, Nha Tranh, Kowloon...

The Ngo family has been important throughout most of Kowloon's history, going all the way back to the earliest settlement in Dinh Diep.  In that time, a few periods of ostentation were known-the old Presidential Palace in Dinh Diep (now a radioactive cinder buried under several hundered meters of overburden),  the Ducal Palace (now the planet's largest secondary school), the Second Ducal Palace (burned in 2861, now a park in Hue), Schloss Ngo (now a rather unpopular mountaineering resort in the Iron Hills range of mountains),  Government House (now home to the elected Planetary Assembly), etc. etc.

Duchess Elizabeth Ngo, however, returned to a more 'traditional' choice-"Elizabeth House" is smack in the middle of a suburban development populated by corporate retainers and mid-level Government employees, Coast Guard personnel, and their families.  It is a split-level four bedroom home with a two car garage on .25 acres, fenced, at the apex of a cul-de-sac, backed up against a greenbelt.  Taken only from appearances, this is a massive down-step from either the typical fortified base style or the extensive estate style residences usually used by Planetary Nobles throughout the Inner Sphere.

Of course, like so much of Elizabeth's image, it's a complete sham.  The House is real enough, and the neighbourhood is real enough-most of the people living there make slightly more than the average in wages, work full five day weeks at normal jobs, and have families present.

A typical middle-class existence, one might say...

Except...

The houses in this development are tied together by a subterranean network of tunnels and chambers, the commlink towers that service the telephones are networked and monitor air-traffic passively up to an altitude of 70,000 feet, they also collect stray transmissions, and feed them through military grade computers looking for indications of hostile intent.  The monitoring systems are located under the local football pitch, and are manned 24 hours a day.  Every home has a fortified basement, designed to act as a bomb-shelter or fighting position, and every resident over the age of eighteen has a weapon and a position in the regional militia, and some homes have heavy weapons buried in cache spaces nearby.

The equivalent of two full Infantry Regiments are available at any time of the day, with concealed weapons turrets to provide anti-air cover in the event of an emergency.    While it is not a Brian fortress, the fact is, Patrick Hills is like a fortified encampment-with nicely painted shingles and a thin veneer of civilian life added for camouflage.

The Camouflage, of course, works mainly because, outside of serious emergency, it is completely real.

There are palaces on the Combine Border that are less well designed for a sustained defensive campaign.

All planetary rulers mark their defensive preparations in their own unique ways.  Elizabeth Ngo's 'way' is concealing her strength under a veneer of 'normality'.

Saturday Morning, 12 February, 3068...

Charles "Chuck" Vanh, Elizabeth's designated Regent and the elected Speaker of the Assembly, arrived at seven with his son, and son's friends, in tow.  Elizabeth had met the kids while visiting Baroness Mosovich.

"Hey, Chuck." Liz greeted her visitors at the doorway-Saturday meant no domestic staff day-other than the Corpsman assigned to keep an eye on her medical condition.

"Lizzie, I do believe you're starting to show." Vanh said pointedly.

"Yeah...I guess that makes it too late to opt out." Elizabeth said with a smile, and looked at the kids.

"Sophie, you're filling out-next thing I know, I'll have to assign some Marines to keep the boys off you." she signed.

Sophie Chao just giggled, and signed back, "Hi Auntie Liz.  I don't need a marine, I have a boyfriend."

"Boyfriends, REALLY!" Liz rolled her eyes, "I suppose you told Edward?"

"Eddie-and he's it.  I'm glad you can have us over." Melinda signed.

"You four, and Evelyn, are the closest thing to a family I've got." Liz said, "I really appreciate you taking the time to come see me."

Eddie was hefting-or trying to-two packs with sleeping bags attached, Melinda, Sophie's Larger sister, reached over and one-handed her own pack, then took the lighter of the other two.  "Hi Aunt Liz." she said with a grin, "We're in the finals for UrbCom-and this year, we've maybe got a shot at the all-divisions title, not just Junior league."

Liz focused her attention on Melinda Chao-technically Melinda was Sophie's twin-at least, fraternally.  The contrast between them went further than Sophie's lack of both eardrums, and vocal chords, the larger sister was roughly twice her mass, and all of it muscle, bone, and sinew-a pocket-sized elemental of a girl whose physique as much as anything else, led her to being a rampant tomboy.

"Let me take a look at you...How are your grades?" Liz asked seriously.

"um...I got a note?" Melinda said, "...and I'm getting extra tutoring."

"Note??" Liz pressed.

"Um...yeah...they diagnosed it as Dyslexia-I guess if mom were alive, she'd be all kinds of scandalized-Chuck's got me spending three hours a day with a tutor and therapist-I'm reading up to grade six now on my own."

"Well...Lenny, don't break the tutor's bones." Liz said with mock-seriousness, "I expect your maths have improved?"

"Um, does the term 'collegiate level talent' count?" Lenny said, "I get my reading up to grade-level and there's scouts from CMA who've already offered me a shot at Battlesuit training, based on our team's UrbCom scores and my maths and tech aptitudes."

Liz sighed, "Then, while you're here, you'll be reading the paper at mealtimes." she said.

For a while, for a few days, at least, Elizabeth's house would be a home-like any other.  The kids carried their bags up to their rooms, and Chuck waited with Elizabeth.

"how are you really doing?" He asked.

"well...considering that I'm between a rock and a hard place? not too bad.  That doc from NIOPS managed to do something about the pain and the siezures, at least for the time being-god knows what the labor's going to do to what he did." Liz said, "but I'm about as close to 'normal' as I've been in the last six years...it's like being back in Stage One."

"here's hoping it stays." Chuck said, "I suppose when the Girls go off to college, and Eddie's off to the Service, I can take in another fosterage, but I'd rather you stuck around."

"So would I...so would I." Liz said, "come on in, I'll tell you about the man who gave me my babies-he's going to be visiting Kowloon pretty soon, hopefully before I have to dash back off to Tharkad..."
"If you have to ask permission, then it's no longer a Right, it has been turned into a Privilege-something that can be and will be taken from you when convenient."

Corona Borealis, Saturday Morning...

He stood on a narrow promontory, overlooking a valley.  Far below, buildings burned, fat pillars of smoke shrouded and reflected orange-yellow hell, occasionally punctuated by the sound of thunder, and the flashing of weapons fire.  Nelson felt he knew this place.  a foreboding gripped his heart.

Actinic light from the sky above flickered-blue-green in the haze, tracing a spiral near the heart of the city below, and he saw olive drab 'mechs fleeing the strike zone in orderly columns.

The trace crossed a domed structure, and Nelson Elam recognized it-a primitive fission power station!

Blue-green thunder ripped across the vale, as atoms excited beyond containment, atoms splitting, heat and steam and fire flasing across the urban landscape below.

He heard the screams over the thunder, and saw the souls of the city's inhabitants.

It was not just a melt-down, it was a detonation, and the rising pillar cloud broke at its peak into a vast mushroom with fire at its feet.

"Nits Make Lice" a grinning demon intoned, and giggled, its Star League uniform a mockery.  "They won't rebel again!" it chortled, and capered.

A wind blew, and the scene shifted below-the Capering demon was gone.

Another valley, another place.  air was haze-yellow with rage.

"They parted them out like old cars."  another devil-this one looked human, but he could see Death's claws wrapped around that body, garbed in a strange stripe-pattern camouflage,  "The Rimjobs carved those people up, You would have let them go, General..."  and Nelson was standing next to a familiar figure, while around them, men in Rim Worlds and Hegemony uniforms stood at attention-held there by three meter long stakes.  "They deserved it."  the devil's face is unshrouded, dead eyes and drawn lips.  "I will stop when the civilians, the local civilians, ask me to, or when you make me stop.  They turned three million people into medical supplies, Sir-people, into parts, for their war machine.  impalement was too good for them, but I can't devise something ...worse."

The scene shifted, and he watched as battlemechs slaughtered civilians in an orgy of violence.  "Kerensky promised us he'd stop it-he abandoned us...so did you.  The Covenant was broken."  The impaler devil was still here, awful in judgement, and for a brief moment, Nelson could see flames licking from the man's pores.  "You've got to make it right...but right now, you need to get a medic, your drugs have gone bad."

reality intruded briefly, and Nelson realized he was strangling on something...he hit the call button.

You better make it right...

Medtechs somehow got into the cabin...

Later, that evening...

"...chemically tampered with, someone was trying to kill you, OvKhan, we have rounded up the pharmaceutical techs for questioning."
"If you have to ask permission, then it's no longer a Right, it has been turned into a Privilege-something that can be and will be taken from you when convenient."

Even if it's possible in a technical sense, I'd bet that the pre-existing damage from the Cholmann's precludes it.  There's also the cultural angle to consider: Kowloonese mores mean Liz can't abort the pregnancy, and given how less technologically invasive and 'artificial' such a procedure would be than tubing the child(ren), I'd imagine the Loonies would take an almost equally-dim view.  The Iron Wombs are part of the Clan eugenics programme, and anything even tangentially related to that raises some very unpleasant cultural memories on a planet that still observes memorials for the Holocaust....

now if she had planned it and used the iron womb and explained that she wanted a few years with her offspring, it might be ok, but it wasnt planned apparently

yeah buy like Trace said, at this point her body is already accelerating its decline, unlikely that would change, she woulf have had to go for normal invitro to avoid this

Warship Corona Borealis, Sunday Afternoon...

The Khan, still recovering, dove into the on-line records through the Chatterweb, and learned some things he wished, at the end, he did not know.

The visions had shown him a past that was not ennobling, nor glorious, it was horrible, ignoble, dark...

"We must go there." He reiterated to himself, and to his assembled Officers.  "We...I need to be sure."

"Sure of what?" Star Colonel James Ben-Shimon asked.

"Dinh Diep, Elbar..." he answered, "and how it ties to the present."

"um...what is 'Dinh Diep'?" Ben Shimon asked, "I am familiar with Elbar..."

"An atrocity-committed by OUR ancestors, before the Amaris Coup." Nelson said, "I witnessed it in a vision, and found confirmation in Star League records-a city was levelled by orbital bombardment for opposing the Amaris Regime in 2729, some years before Amaris killed the first lord, when the Rim Worlds were still seen as a loyal vassal state of the Hegemony-according to the investigation, three million civilians died and the entire city was turned into a fallout zone because the gunners on the SLS Belleau Wood accidentally struck a fission reactor station inside the city limits."

"Where did this happen?" James asked.

"Kowloon." Nelson stated, "The same world that sent the soldiers that uncovered the Rim Worlds atrocity factory on Elbar...apparently, what is left out when analyzing the incident on Elbar, is that they did not join to preserve the Star League, they joined against Amaris because they hated the Rim Worlds... General Kerensky and General DeChevalier considered their reliability to be a future issue, in the event that they ran out of Rim Worlds troops to kill, because of Dinh Diep."

He shuffled the offprints, "There is a mention of a document that was intended to placate them-but we lack that text."  He looked at his fellows, "I suspect we may find the missing piece of that puzzle on Kowloon, or near it-that piece could be the key to the entire region, since the Kowloonese seem to be providing the bulk of reinforcement troops to their neighbouring Lyran worlds under the Quarantine...whatever it was, Kerensky believed that it would assure their loyalty after the war was over-as in preventing them from seeking redress for their lost city, and preventing them from starting another round of civil wars."

James looked thoughtful.  "DId any of them join the Exodus?" he asked.

"Not one." Nelson said, "The 171st was demobilized and their personnel shipped home a full year before Operation Exodus took place, and none of them came to General Kerensky's call."

"If you have to ask permission, then it's no longer a Right, it has been turned into a Privilege-something that can be and will be taken from you when convenient."

Spider Moon Coast Guard Station, Kowloon system...

"Jump point emergence detected-looks big.  Better wake the Commodore, and scramble 12 Squadron with a couple gunships to check it out..."

Intermediate zone...
Two K-1's outfitted with fuel drogues began burning out-system, while the fighters of 12 Squadron formed on them.  Flanking solar north and south were a pair of rebuilt, ex-surplus Aquarius shuttles.

"Spider moon, we've got visual, Confirm one Warship with escorts at the emergence point, Looks like a Clan refit Aegis with a Lola Three...we're going to need more fighters, Over."  Lt. Commander Duk Trac looked at the enhanced visuals, then out at the glittering darkness.

"Tankers break off and fall back, Twelve Squadron, maintain visual on the Clan ships, but do not initiate engagement, you can't handle that kind of firepower, Over."

"Orders confirmed Spider moon." Duk replied.  "You heard the Commodore, kids, we're watching them but not engaging unless fired on."

"I'm getting painted-we've got a transmission coming from the Aegis."  his RTO in the second rear seat announced, "They're...sir, they're asking for landing clearance for someone named Khan."

"That would be a title, not a name, does this Khan have a name?"  Duk asked.

"Um...Elam, sir." the RTO answered.

"Forward the message to Spider moon, this just got political."  Duk said with a relieved sigh, "Maybe we won't have to fight today."

"Text message from the Commodore, on the secure box."  the Radioman announced, "Should I forward it to the Clanners-seems to be for them..."

"My screen first." Duk said.

The display lit with text.  Duk read it, and laughed...

"Put me on voice-channel contact with the Clanners on my mark, in the meantime, notify the Squadron-we're doing escort duty for VIP's using Training Protocol Juliet."

"Orders forwarded." the Radioman said.

"Mark."

Goliath Scorpion ship Corona Borealis...

"We are recieving a transmission-voice only, OvKhan."  The Comms officer on the bridge held his headset one-handed, and looked up to the Commander's position.

"Speaker?" Nelson Elam said impatiently.

"...th Squadron to Goliath Scorpion warship, your Khan and his party are cleared for landing on Kowloon, please observe SLDF Regulation D/122 dated March of 2741, that means keep your weapons on safe and your targeting systems disengaged.  12 Squadron will handle traffic control and stand by on channel 164b VHF band for landing instructions, Over."
"If you have to ask permission, then it's no longer a Right, it has been turned into a Privilege-something that can be and will be taken from you when convenient."

a week in space...

It actually took the Khan five days to get to the surface of Kowloon-the Quoted regulation was an SLDF civil quarantine-planetary level regulation, and as such, everyone had to have their shot-records updated with the correct vaccines.

Which, in turn, meant that the correct vaccines had to be delivered to the Corona Borealis, and analyzed against Clan medical databases, which in turn meant an HPG call to obtain the analytic data on the vaccines for the Arluna Flu, and then, the MedTechs and Scientist-Doctor assigned to the Keshik had to analyze the local variant as supplied by the Coast Guard.

As much as anything could be, it was a stark reminder of how close every world in the region had come to extinction, and how dangerous this period would be-if the virus got out again.

The Delay did give the Khan, and a few Seekers, a chance to play tourist in the Boojum Belt systems and Spider Moon.

Tuesday...

The structures above ground were instantly recognizeable- Khan Elam and a Seeker from the Suvarov bloodline were the first to un-ship at Spider Moon Coast Guard base-the only "no shots" landing zone in the entire system, the Base was serving as a processing centre for in-system bound traffic-at least, the nearest such centre to the zenith point the Scorpion visitors had used.

"Old-pre war, prefabricated." the Seeker commented, "Built by the Star League for certain...amazingly good condition, considering it was not mothballed."

the lock cycled, and the inner door opened.

The walls inside the lock had slight paint-fade and power points distributed in an odd fashion. The Coasties on the far side of the lock wore skinsuits with helmets lanyarded to the belts of their outer uniforms.  "Wrist please, Khan Elam?" a woman with Cadaceus markings on her uniform coverall asked.

Nelson undocked his pressure glove, and pulled the sleeve up to expose an arm.  "what is this for?" he asked.

"Screening-make sure you are not already infected, so we can get you into treatment if you ARE."  The swab was rough, scraping skin and stimulating sweat glands.  She dropped it into a cannister and the cannister into an analysis tray, while another MedTech swabbed the Seeker.

"How long before you know?" the Seeker asked, saving his Khan the question.

"Fifteen minutes at most-we found an old Sequencer the previous tenants left behind-it works, so we use it..."

fifteen minutes later, the news came back that both Clan warriors were 'clean'.

"Got a Corpsman with you?" the woman asked.

"Corpsman..? OH, you mean MedTech, aff, why?" the Seeker responded, watching the crew alertly.

"Verification of formula-this is Serum XVIII-A as developed by the joint team on Arluna-it is an effective innoculant against the 21b Virus, also known as Arluna Flu, anyone who wants to set foot on Kowloon needs either proof of innoculation, or to be given the shot here-since your test results show no XVIII-A trace molecules in the Analyzer, I am going to take a stab and say that you need your shots, and given that you are Clan, and we are not, you want your people to verify we are not shooting you up with poisons, drugs, or nasty little virus bugs."  Her accent had a vestigal sing-song asiatic lilt, it was excellent english, but clearly NOT her first language.

"THAT will not be necessary." Khan Elam spoke up, "If you planned to do anything dishonorable, and actually TRIED to do anything dishonorable, the consequences to your world would be...grave is not too strong a word, I assume your commanders are aware of this, Quiaff?"  He smiled, "I see that I am correct in my assumption.  Give me the shot."

primitive, they are still using needles...  Nelson noted, unless the formula suffers some kind of issue from standard innocu-spray methods...

The MedTech managed to stick the first time with so little pain that it was actually easier than using a hypogun-it hurt less.

Lots of practice...  he watched Suvarov cringe slightly before the needle hit.

"Okay, the innoculation takes about twelve hours to penetrate through your system, but you are now free to enter the main part of the station."  The MedTech said, while signing a cardboard card and handing it to him, "This is your shot-record, your people can update your Clan records at your leisure, but I would recommend keeping this on your person for a while-not all our systems can handshake Clan databases."

A red light turned green over the inner doorway.

The door opened, and an officer in full uniform-cut to accomodate a similar skinsuit, stepped in.

Nelson looked the woman over.  She was small, at the lower end of 'mechwarrior sized, with a darker asian cast to her features and short, yet thick, black hair tinged lightly with grey, and the permanent flushed veins of a spacer that has survived decompression.  her left ear sported a single gold stud, and her uniform had Lyran Captain's tabs with a gold bar set at the apex-a Commodore's rank, on a pseudoleather flap.  Her collar ranks were rather less familiar, but the nametape said simply "Li".  Tough. he thought, at least, tougher than most Inner Sphere natives in Militia commands...  He searched his memory of the Watch briefings on this world, and the profiles the InterClan Watch had on worlds in this region, specifically.

Li...veteran of the 3039 war, pilot, decorated. Dropship commander in the 3039 conflict, decorated for a high-risk extraction...

"Welcome to the Kowloon system, I'm Commodore Alicia Li, commanding officer of the Coast Guard.  YOU are Khan Nelson Elam."  The woman spoke with a much thicker accent-the singsong and pronunciation were very much native to this place... "Why are you here?" Li asked.

"I wish to engage your Duchess in diplomacy." Nelson said.

the woman's skeptical expression was unrelenting.  "Clanners very rarely bother with diplomacy, and never high-ranking warriors unless they've already had a fight...why are you here?"

at this point, the Seeker spoke up, "We are engaged in historical research, specifically research pertaining to your world and its involvement in the war against the Usurper." Suvarov spoke fast-and-frantic, imitating the tone of many scientists when other priorities interrupt their work.

Li's expression shifted.  "Goliath Scorpions...yeah, I read you guys are nuts for history-I actually Believe that line a lot further than the 'diplomacy' thing-it fits your profile better..."

Nelson gritted his teeth and bit back the urge to swat the annoying native right then-and-there.  "You can see why we would need to use diplomacy, now, QuiAff?" he seethed.

"Sure.  You do not want to trash the goods before you have seen them." Li replied, carefully enunciating the english into a very close approximation of "Pure" Star League English, "While your people are getting innoculated, then, you can have a guided tour of the base-if you really ARE interested in that period, we have a pretty decent collection of stuff from the campaigns of the 171st here-almost as good as the main office down at Vin Drin Lap on Kowloon."

"AND I want to meet your Duchess." Nelson added with special emphasis, "The Seeker and I are VERY interested in your history, but we would also like to discuss...futures with someone in charge."
"If you have to ask permission, then it's no longer a Right, it has been turned into a Privilege-something that can be and will be taken from you when convenient."

Thirty minutes later...

The surface facility tour was perfunctory-there was not much to it, really-the upper levels of the base were clearly transit-oriented.  "What do you do here-what is your Coast Guard's function?" Suvarov asked as they stepped into the lift down.

"Peacetime, we run search-and-rescue, law enforcement, safety inspections, anti-piracy patrol, mail delivery, customs and entry/exit paperwork, customs inspection, anti-smuggling operations, and the Assay office-basically doing everything they use nine different departments to handle planet-side...and we are part of a Planet-side operation too-the Coast Guard handles both sea, and space, with a jurisdiction that runs from the ocean floor right up into the Oort Cloud-but the Spacer-side has the bigger half of the profile, since we handle the civil service work out here, including criminal trials and overseeing civil disputes-in wartime, we also get stuck handling whatever jobs the Lyran Navy won't do out here, and provide supplementary spacelift for the LAAF."

The lift went down a level, and opened on a broad, sealed-rock catacomb lit with LEDs and Glo-strips.

"We are the only Space Militia in the entire Lyran Alliance." she added with some undisguised pride, "We even have a few Jumpships."

"Why?" Elam asked.

"Because we have to provide protection and SAR to people in the outer-system, and jumpers are the only way to get out there in a reasonable amount of time." Li answered, "My crews have more hours, some of them, than LAAF Regulars do.  by the time an e-code reaches a reception station here at Boojum, from the Oort cloud, at least, it is between several minutes, and several hours old-think transit from the Heliosphere inward.  a Normal dropper can not make that trip in less than a week-by then, people are basically corpsicles and we would have failed the objective-on the other hand, I can order the Gloria or the Nung out to the general area from a pirate point or stable Lagrange and they can make it to the incident zone in only a few hours at most."'

"do you do that often?" Suvarov asked.

"People screw up, gear breaks, we usually have an incident out there once or twice a year, more often I end up having to send out an arrest team and an officer to sit Court over a claim dispute or minor crime." she confessed, "but getting them out there, running a solid rotation? keeps fatalities down."

They entered a gallery off one of the larger tunnels.

"History." Li said.

The chamber was hollowed from the rock at some point long ago-and braced with foamed metal supports of a sort rarely seen today. It was nearly a Kilometer to a side...

There were unit banners, display cases with holos, images, and artifacts, and tunnels led off from here like spokes from a twisted wheel.

"I...see..." It reminded Nelson of the Clan's archive, back in the Homeworlds, at least in depth and variety.

"Probably not all that impressive to people who have the Star League Library, but we are kind of proud of our collection-everything from the first colonization, to the Long War, to the Dinh Diep uprising and the Revolution of 2769, to the Amaris War, some stuff from the Succession wars too, a few period documents here and there..." she sighed, "not that big, I'm sure you have bigger back where you came from."

"The tunnels leading off?" Suvarov asked what Khan Elam hadn't quite got his mind around to asking.

"Oh, those are just lists of our dead, I can't tell you how many names and dates are listed on the walls in those tunnels, we stopped counting back in 2960, it just takes too damn long, now we just dig a few more tunnels if we run out of walls and ceilings."

"Just hte Coast Guard?" Nelson scoffed.

"Nope, every Kowloonese who's died in service-whether Coast Guard, Militia, or LAAF, gets his or her name added to the rolls-last twenty years have been pretty busy, we've had to dig a new level since '49 alone."  she stated, "Last year added fifteen thousand names, only three thousand of them were part of the Arluna relief."  she sighed, "Nobody gets forgotten, nobody left behind."

She led them through the galleries..."Here we go, Amaris War section." she announced.

Nelson browsed along the cases, looking at holos and flat image pictures, until...

Make it right.  He stopped, staring.

The face in the image was young-looking the way only someone of the right Asian ancestry could look perpetually young, sitting in a pose that seemed both alert, and relaxed, face grim, at the doors to what was clearly a Brian Fortress.

The man from his vision-from the nightmare, sitting in the presence of Aleksandr Kerensky himself, on the open rear ramp of an armored personnel carrier.  "Who is this?" Nelson asked numbly.

"That is Tranh Truk Ngo, he organized the Revolution of '69 and led the 171st Volunteer Brigade." Li told him, "one of our people's great heroes, he's also the direct line ancestor of our Duchess."

"And how did he die?" Nelson asked, still feeling numb.

"Complications from Cholmann's syndrome about a year after the 171st was demobilized." Li said, "Story has it, he died the night Kerensky left the Inner Sphere-the story goes that he was in stage two, and went straight to organ failure in Stage three in a matter of minutes, supposedly about five minutes before General Kerensky gave the order to jump from New Samarkand."

"He was commanding troops, in the field, with that illness?" Nelson asked.

"Yeah, he was on a Neuroin drip through most of Elbar...doesn't look like he's stoned, does it?" Li replied, "It's because in HIS condition, Neuroin's about as potent as aspirin is for you or me...he was in stage two on Elbar-that's a medical fact."

Wednesday...

"Suvarov, I need you to stay on Spider Moon, see what you can find in that collection they have here."  Nelson Elam sat in the wardroom of his dropship, as Medtechs administered the XVIII-A serum to the warriors of his Keshik.

"You think it might be here?" Suvarov asked.

"I think that is a strong possibility-Founders, did you really look at how large that collection is?" Nelson asked.

"Aff, I did...I am starting to understand how these people can hold grudges over decades, even centuries..." He paused, "I will consider this an opportunity, and thank you for it."

The Seeker left the wardroom to oversee the unshipping of his Aerofighter-the reconditioned vessel would remain with its warrior at the Naval base.

Alone, Nelson considered his options.

I should contact the Spirit Cat Khan. he decided, and grimmaced-they would be less than receptive, He had opposed allowing the return of the former Nova Cats on the Grand Council's floor.

Still, sometimes their 'visions' can be useful, and given that their assigned corridor flanks ours...  the thought was still slightly repellent.  I will wait until I have something more...solid. he decided.

"How solid do you NEED, Deserter?"  Nelson heard the voice and looked around, "Who said that?"

"Might be residues from that bad batch of Necrosia, might be a real ghost, you decide how you want to play it."  the voice continued, and he caught a flicker of movement from the corner of his eye.  "Back in my day, you know, we didn't get stoned on hallucinogens right before a deployment, and sure as hell didn't make decisions based on what we saw while frying our brains.  If I'm real, I was taking pain-killers, not trying to open new perceptions by poisoning my gray-matter."

Nelson looked down, and realized he had a vial of Necrosia in his hand.

"You're going to deal with my descendant, you need to have all your marbles, General Elam, not fry the left side of your brain looking for answers in the Ether-Liz is sharp, she's off the painkillers and she's angry at the universe for making her too smart with one hand, while ruining her life irrevocably with the other.  THAT is if I'm REAL, if I'm NOT real, then I'm your subconscious common-sense telling you not to bake your thinking-meat right before meeting someone who might be important to your goals.  If I'm REAL, then you need to ask yourself why you're seeing me, hearing me, being hassled BY me, and if I'm a residual drug-interaction, you need to see a Doctor to get clean...which would be a damn good idea in any case."

Nelson slowed his breathing down, and meditated, while putting the vial away.

"Auditory hallucinations? but no visual..." he muttered.

"oh, right...better?"  Tranh Truk Ngo sat on the desk in front of him.  Not a demon, just a man...that he could see through.

"I may have to test this...is it true-the legend, did you die the night Kerensky left on Exodus?" Nelson asked.

"no.  I died about a week later.  I went into stage three about three days before."  The Hallucination replied, "Legends, of course, always look better the further you get from the actual event.  This doesn't mean I'm real, just that you're smart enough to be skeptical."

"Assuming you are NOT a drug interaction, why me? why now?" Nelson asked.

"You were this close-" the hallucination held fingers apart roughly a centimeter, "From dying, made you vulnerable, and I cursed all of your ancestors when they left-if you believe in that sort of thing, makes you a good anchor for a haunting, but I'd still be skeptical of that-there's no such thing as magic, after all."

"Why?" Nelson asked.

"They left.  Broke an Oath when they did...maybe you'll find out what that promise was, maybe you won't, and maybe it's immaterial now anyway-just a hallucination-mabye that bad batch left permanent damage and you're really just losing it..."  the shade said,  "If you are, you need to get help, if you aren't, you should PROBABLY get help anyway-it's hard to function when you aren't sure what's real...I'd suggest tht you remember Moreau's admonition though- there is 'truth' and there is 'fact', and the two have only a passing resemblance."

"You are not real." Nelson announced.

"Bingo. I'm all in your head.  Funny that you would hallucinate ME, though, eh?  Why not a Founder, or an old comrade?  Why a dead periphery rebel who fought Amaris but refused to join the Exodus? What is it I'm supposed to represent?"
"If you have to ask permission, then it's no longer a Right, it has been turned into a Privilege-something that can be and will be taken from you when convenient."

Wonder if the "Liz Goes to Hell" cycle will fit into this version of the Ngo-Verse ...
* No, FASA wasn't big on errata - ColBosch
* The Housebook series is from the 80's and is the foundation of Btech, the 80's heart wrapped in heavy metal that beats to this day - Sigma
* To sum it up: FASAnomics: By Cthulhu, for Cthulhu - Moonsword
* Because Battletech is a conspiracy by Habsburg & Bourbon pretenders - MadCapellan
* The Hellbringer is cool, either way. It's not cool because it's bad, it's cool because it's bad with balls - Nightsky
