In system en route to Jump Point
LAS Archon’s Pride, Avalon-class Cruiser
New St. Andrews System, Lyran Alliance
5th October 3072

Following lengthy discussions and negotiations with the Council President of New St. Andrews and the local mercenary commander Captain Michael Nelson, commander of Nelson’s Longbows on planet defenders Archon Peter Steiner-Davion had been able to secure protectorate status for the world, rights to land troops on the world which he had begun by leaving a mixed company from the First Royal Guards RCT and a contract from Nelson’s Longbows which would keep them on the world for the next five years Peter was back aboard the Archon’s Pride heading back to the local jump point when hell broke loose.

The Archon’s Pride was hit heavily from the port by several heavy impacts and weapon blasts, even in his conference room deep within the vessel Peter could tell they were under attack.  As he headed for the bridge, made easier with gravity since the vessel was under motion he felt a hit on the starboard side as well.  Reaching the bridge he looked immediately to the Holo-tank in the centre of the room from the picture he was able to make out the vessel was under attack from one large target and six smaller vessels, DropShip sized targets.  In the centre of the room Admiral Henry Hayes who was barking orders to the helm while ordering the main gunners to hold fire while the vessel turned.

“Admiral, what’s our situation?”  Peter asked stepping up to the Holo-tank as the Avalon was slammed by another blast to the port side.

“We have a mite on our back and are preparing to swat it, sire” the Admiral said without missing a beat.  “Port Gunners continue hold for thirty seconds, Starboard Gunners kill those DropShips now.”  He said finally looking up to the gunner controllers.  The Archon’s Pride’s gunners along the right hand side of the vessel answered almost in unison.  Naval-grade Autocannons, Lasers, Missiles and Gauss Rifles began to fire from the Avalon’s eight hundred metre length.  Four of the six DropShips were destroyed or disabled in the opening volley while the last two were killed on their attack run against the Cruisers, only mass numbers of DropShips really stood a chance against a WarShip and even then only if they carried capital missiles or nuclear weapons.  Meanwhile the enemy WarShip had positively identified as the MHS Caesar, a Dart-class Light Cruiser, the flagship of the Marian Hegemony.

“Looks like we pissed someone off” Peter whispered under his breath as the vessel fired yet more Naval Autocannon, Missile and Laser blasts into the port armour.  “Admiral, shouldn’t we swat that menace before it does some real damage?”  Peter asked looking at the Admiral who didn’t seem bothered by the attacks.

“The Avalon has the armour to handle it, sire, not to worry.”  Hayes said Peter looked at him then back to the Holo-tank, he didn't like someone messing up one of his ships but no-one seemed overly concerned by the Light Cruiser, the Caesar was on an outbound flight now trying to escape.  “Not happening my friend.”  Hayes said “Port Gunners, gloves off, fire at will!”  He barked.  The Port gunners who had patiently taken their beating from the Caesar without reply now had their chance.  Instead of Naval-grade Autocannons, Lasers, Missiles and Gauss Rifles spread over a multiple targets like the Starboard’s targets had been the Port’s were now all focused on the single Dart trying to escape.

Looking at the Holo-tank was great for positional data but Peter looked away to a secondary display for damage, three of the four Medium Naval Gauss Rifles had hit the aft and port armour causing heavy but not crippling damage, two Naval Autocannons had also struck the port side while the naval lasers had hit the aft section.  As he watched all four Killer Whale Capital Missiles struck the aft armour, the Avalon’s advanced sensors could tell that two of the Dart’s thrusters had been hit severely damaging its propulsion units.

“Helm continue the turn” Hayes said, the Avalon was twice as fast as a Dart normally now with the damage caused it was a sitting duck.  “Aft weapons take that pest out of my sky” Hayes said smiling he’d always wanted to say that.  At that very moment the smile dropped as did all sensor data on the Dart as the MHS Caesar disappeared in a blink.  Hayes audibly cursed in German on the command deck of the LAS Archon’s Pride, he’d been robbed as had his crew the vessel‘s first kill had gotten away.

“What happened?  Were they destroyed?”  Peter asked wishing he knew more about space combat the flash of energy on sensors could have been anything.

“Negative, they jumped, the crazy bastards supercharged their K-F Drive with Fusion Reactors and jumped.  Really dangerous and desperate in their condition but they are gone.  Only way we could get them now is if we chased them all the way back to the Marian Hegemony, with their Lithium Fusion Battery they could be sixty light years away by now.”  Hayes said cursing several more times in his native tongue.

“Admiral, for the first combat this crew has faced I believe you did well, take it for what it is and let’s go home.”

“Aye, sire, next time we will get the little bastard” cursed one last time “and we still have six DropShips for our name, the guns have been blooded, next time it will be just a couple more and the icing on the cake.”  He promised “engineering and damage control, I want a damage assessment made on this vessel before we jump.  Helm, take us to the jump point and home.”  The Admiral said passing out orders before he cursed a couple more times under his breath Peter secretly wondered about the man’s attitude but according to the High Command he was the best man for the job so he’d leave it as it was.  Around him the crew of the Archon’s Pride began assessing damage and preparing the vessel for the journey back deeper into the Lyran Alliance.

Upsilon Galaxy Command
Barcella, Kerensky Cluster
Clan Homeworlds
28th October 3072

Following the vote on Strana Mechty that saw the Clans decide not to abjure Clan Sea Fox for its dealing with the Inner Sphere states Khan Canin Rosse walked off the Vanguard, a Vanguard-class Troopship used by the Watch Keshik, and onto the tarmac of Barcella Spaceport to a welcome of Galaxy Commander Sophie Rosse, commander of Upsilon Galaxy of the Nova Cats.

“Galaxy Commander” Canin said in a simple welcome

“My Khan, welcome home” Sophie said Canin smiled broadly he hadn’t considered Barcella home for a long time, but he knew many members of the Clan still considered it as such.

“Thank you, Galaxy Commander, it is good to breath the air we were all born to.”  Canin said quietly that part at least was true, it was good to return to the Homeworlds just to see Barcella again, to breath the air he'd grown up in.  “How are things on Barcella?”

“Things are as they have been my Khan, we are fully combat ready and have fended off trials from several of the other Clans but we do nothing but fight defensively.  Some of my warriors begin to feel restless through just defending, the local civilians feel left out they cannot enjoy the standards of living in the Nova Cat’s Den, there has been a couple of incidents.”

“Incidents?”  Canin asked, he did not like the idea of Nova Cat warriors acting against their own people.  He indicated to her to begin moving towards the command tower, they began to walk.

“Aff, a civilian riot of sorts.  People demanding more from the military and merchants and for passage to the Nova Cat’s Den.  We have kept them in check, casualties have been kept to a minimum in most areas however my people are not a police force.”

“Most areas?”  He asked because the world of Barcella had not always been controlled exclusively by the Nova Cats there were civilians from other Clans still on the world and no doubt a source of trouble.

“Aff, the former Jade Falcon population, who we have been all but barred from travel to the Den, have been causing troubles.  I deployed the 109th Battle Cluster, being a former Jade Falcon unit, to the area in hopes that their common heritage would keep hostilities down.”  Sophie said quietly, Canin could tell she was unhappy with the decision and regretted what had happened.

“And did it?”  Canin asked knowing the answer as he saw her make a disgusted face “Quineg?”  He asked again when she did not answer immediately.  At present Sophie was his most senior officer in the Homeworlds, he did not like speaking to her in this manner.

“Negative, my Khan that stavag, Star Colonel Fresic Irons, commander of the One hundred-and-ninth Battle Cluster, opened fire on the people.”  Canin stopped dead, Clan warriors did not open fire on civilians, at least Nova Cats ddn't.  Sometimes the Smoke Jaguars and Jade Falcons did but everyone had seen where that had gotten the Smoke Jaguars and the Jade Falcon civilians were some of the least productive of all the Clans.

   “What was the body count?”

“Last I checked three hundred and forty-two, all former Clan Jade Falcon civilians, two BattleMechs were slightly damaged.”  Sophie said quietly “the Jade Falcons have been causing a lot of noise about troubles, their people brutalized by a Nova Cat warrior even though Irons is trueborn Falcon!”  She said it was obvious to Canin she‘d had plenty of trouble from the man.

“A military reaction?”  Canin asked quietly, the Jade Falcons did not have a heavy presence in the Homeworlds so a military attack was unlikely.

“They have made some noise but have made no moves against us, I don't think they have the hardware available.”

“And Fresic?”  Canin asked omitting the rank and the bloodname of the warrior.

“I have restricted his unit to base duties only.”

“I think I need to meet this man.”  Canin said looking to Sophie Rosse, after a moment she nodded and they headed off.  An hour later Canin and Sophie reached the base where the One hundred-and-ninth Battle Cluster had been stationed.  Entering the base the One hundred-and-ninth were ready for their Khan as he stepped from his Vehicle they snapped to attention Mechs and Battle Armour snapping to attention as they saw the Khan’s crest.  The unit still looked very Jade Falcon to Canin, even the Unit Insignia a Nova Cat with wings and Jade Falcon talon’s rimming the bottom looking at the equipment he could see a very Jade Falcon set up was still evident despite there being Nova Cat factories on the planet.  Ahead of them stood a seventy ton Summoner OmniMech, primary heavy OmniMech of Clan Jade Falcon.  Star Colonel Fresic Irons stood at the foot of the Mech, he looked like the typical arrogant, better than you, Jade Falcon as he walked up to the Khan and Galaxy Commander, he didn‘t even salute Canin he just looked at the Khan and the Galaxy Commander both senior officers.

“What is required of us?”  Fresic asked looking at Sophie, not even acknowledging the Khan.

“Khan Canin Rosse, meet Fresic Irons, Star Colonel and commander of the One hundred-and-ninth Battle Cluster.”  She said looking from Canin to Fresic, the Star Colonel straightened slightly but made no obvious notes to notice of being in a Khan’s presence.

“Star Colonel, what is your problem?”  Canin asked looking the Star Colonel up and down.

“I have a problem with this planet, this Clan, this Galaxy and You.  I declare a Trial of Refusal against you ’Khan’ Canin Rosse.”  Fresic Irons said looking at the Khan straight out.

“Your terms Star Colonel?  You cannot declare a Trial against our Khan without grounds.”  Sophie Rosse said stepping forward.

“This planet is ours, it is time we strike out yet we remain here.  This Clan is weak and has run from the Homeworlds, this Galaxy is unwilling to step up to the threats of public mutiny and you are never here.  This “Khan“ consorts with a freeborn regularly and supports another Khan despite it being fractured worse than the Fire Mandrills.”  Fresic said quietly “I declare this trial for the good of our Clan and my troops.”  Fresic said angrily.

“If you have a problem you have it with me, Star Colonel” Sophie said stepping forward to her Khan’s defence “I am you commander” she reminded him however Canin had already passed her.

“Star Colonel choose you trial and we will meet in a Circle of Equals” Canin said loud enough for all to hear looking straight at the former Jade Falcon warrior, everyone looked surprised at their Khan’s announcement, Fresic Irons looked amused and happy at the prospect of facing his Khan in combat.

“We will fight where we were born to fight in the Cockpit of a Mech, six hours in the firing ranges to the east of this base.”  Fresic said after a few moments Canin only nodded then turned to Sophie Rosse.

“Galaxy Commander make it happen.  It appears that the One hundred-and-ninth Battle Cluster is indeed ready for combat, let us show them how a Nova Cat truly fights, Quiaff?”  He said loud enough for all to hear before heading back into the transport, he would return here but next time at the helm of his Dragon Cat.

“Aff, My Khan” she said watching him enter the vehicle before following the Khan without another word.

Six hours later Canin walked his Dragon Cat OmniMech onto the firing ranges near the One hundred-and-ninth’s base at the other end of the range was Fresic Irons in his Summoner.  Looking at the Star Colonel’s Mech just over a kilometre away Canin could see the Summoner was outfitted his OmniMech in the Alternate Alpha configuration giving the Star Colonel a Gauss Rifle, Short Range Missile launcher and Large Pulse Laser along with the standard built-in Jump Jets on the Summoner design.  Canin had likewise outfitted his OmniMech with the Alpha configuration giving the Dragon Cat a Gauss Rifle and three Heavy Medium Lasers tied to the Targeting Computer, an Short Range Missile launcher as large as the Summoner’s but linked to an advanced Fire Control Suite and a set of five Jump Jets matching the Summoner, this would be an interesting fight both Mechs matched in tonnage and were close in firepower.

Activating the communication’s channel it was Fresic who spoke first “I Fresic Irons, Star Colonel and commander of the One hundred-and-ninth Battle Cluster of Clan Nova Cat, have challenged our Khan to a trial not through the want for personal gain but to bring the Nova Cats back onto the path we were destined to follow by the Great Father.  And to ensure the Nova Cats are established in the Homeworlds as a force to be reckoned with, not just here for the sake of it.”  He said then continued “this Circle is not to the death but if that is what it takes then so be it.”  The Star Colonel said Canin noticed the Summoner flex its joints slightly as he finished talking, Fresic really did like to play the crowd Canin thought knowing that everyone in the area would hear and see that, now it was his turn.

“I am Canin Rosse, born to this soil, I am Khan of Clan Nova Cat and I have answered this challenge, may no other enter.”  He said then together they finished with “Seyla” keeping with tradition there was a moments of silence Canin flipped the communications suite to passive and waited he’d let Fresic make the first move, it would be one of his last.  Unlike Fresic Irons the Khan had already decided the fate of the loser of this battle, only one would walk away from this.

The Star Colonel accelerated his Summoner forward and to the right attempting to get into range of the still stationary Dragon Cat.  Instead of moving Canin Linked the left arm mounted gauss rifle to the targeting computer, instantly he could feel the rifle be held in line by the advanced piece of equipment.  Dropping the cross-hairs over the Summoner, he saw a second set lock over the seventy ton charging Mech and both sets go black, as the computer also achieved a lock there was an audible ‘bang’ as the Mech shook with the launching of the slug.  The gauss round crossed the distance in a blink of an eye the supersonic piece of Ferro-nickel impacted the Summoner’s left leg obliterating nearly a ton of armour.  To Fresic Irons credit he didn’t stop or falter in his charge instead he launched the OmniMech skyward firing one of his own gauss slugs in reply as the Mech reached the top of it’s jump.  The gauss slug slammed into the Dragon Cat’s upper torso missing the cockpit by a metre or so, the stationary OmniMech took the hit easily and Canin had little to do controlling his Mech the stabilizing gyro doing its job.  Instead he began to accelerate the heavy Mech bringing his Mech to a run straight for the Summoner.  Just within range he linked the three right arm mounted heavy medium lasers to the targeting computer at the same time firing another gauss slug into the Summoner’s left arm this time.  Fresic Irons replied with a right arm large pulse laser, the pulse blasts hit the lower torso section on the Dragon Cat, the armour on Canin’s OmniMech could easily take it and the Dragon Cat continued to charge forward, closing the gap.

Glancing at the range Canin noticed it read four hundred metres and launched the Dragon Cat skyward still heading right for the Summoner which was continuing on its course, Fresic Irons turning the Summoner to track the Khan’s Mech.  In Mid-air Canin opened fire with the short range missile launcher, six high explosive missiles shot towards the Summoner, guided by the Dragon Cat’s Artemis Advanced Fire Control suite, the Summoner’s return flight of missiles missed the Dragon Cat by five-to-ten metres detonating overhead becoming a spectacular expensive fire work display.  As the Dragon Cat began to fall, ending its jump, Canin brought the heavy laser suite inline with the Summoner as well and just as his own missiles hit blossoming fire over the OmniMech he triggered the Lasers, notoriously inaccurate normally the hit would have missed but because of the targeting computer they fired true.  Two of the opal beams hit the right arm while the third hit the torso less than a metre from the Summoner’s cockpit.  Landing the Dragon Cat Canin was hit by a wave of excess heat from the fusion engine, the heat sinks were beginning to be overloaded by the constant moving and firing.  Instead of stopping Canin slapped the override and fired the gauss rifle, at less than three hundred metres and with the targeting computer there was no chance of the slug missing and it slammed into the Summoner’s upper left arm, there was a massive explosion as the supersonic slug his and the entire arm and attached gauss rifle flew clear of the OmniMech, robbing Fresic Irons of his main weapon.

To his credit Fresic did not give up instead he launched the Summoner airborne on Jump Jet flame leaping towards the overheating Dragon Cat firing more short range missiles, only three of the six missiles struck two shaking the Mech up causing minor damage while the third struck the cockpit throwing Canin around and damaging the life support systems, things were going to get a lot hotter in here if the Khan didn‘t finish this fight.  “Stavag!”  He cursed under his breath launching another six short range missiles into the Summoner striking all over the OmniMech’s already damaged leg armour, he followed it up with another gauss rifle slug to the torso.  By keeping to low heat generating weapons the Dragon Cat’s temperature had at least, temporally gone down.

The damaged Summoner continued to close firing its pulse laser and missiles constantly hitting the leg, arm and torso armour constantly doing damage, slowly creating cracks in the Dragon Cat’s thick ferro-fibrous hide as it closed, less than a hundred-and-fifty metres now.  Twisting the right arm into position, tracking the Summoner’s movements with a torso twist, Canin pulled the trigger and the three lasers sparked to life guided by the targeting computer the lasers tore through the already damaged armour burning to gyroscope in the centre of the torso to a crisp.  Without this stabilizing piece of technology the Summoner stumbled, initially Fresic fought the fall but the damage was too great, the Mech then fell forwards smashing into the ground face first, because the Mech had been travelling at over eighty kilometres per hour the Mech tore across the ground on its face then flipped over smashing and crushing the pilot and cockpit an unfortunate end to a good warrior who had failed to adapt to his new position.  This trial was over and the message was clear, the Khan was in command, even so Canin had received the message as well.  His warriors were ready for war.

In the coming weeks a Nova Cat warrior, Star Colonel Lucy Nostra, formerly of Upsilon Galaxy’s Justice Keshik.  With the arrival of a new commander and the death of Fresic the One hundred-and-ninth began to make further strives forwards changing their unit insignia to a simple Nova Cat design and trading much of their equipment for Nova Cat built designs, although the rest of Upsilon Galaxy and the population of Barcella were still wary of them the unit were making progress towards acceptance in their new Clan.

Various Worlds and Enclaves
Clan Homeworlds, Kerensky Cluster
3rd November 3072

In the early morning Clan Star Adder’s Inner Sphere Occupation Forces arrives back in the Clan Homeworlds battered and broken they return to their enclaves.  In the afternoon the carnage begins as Khan Stanislov N’Buta orders his Clan to war against the Homeworlds Clans lashing out in their anger.  First targets are the Snow Ravens at Lum, although it is not a major assault the Star Adders destroy half a cluster of Snow Raven fighters wining the use of part of the Lum Shipyards for the refit of their battered Absolute Truth.

In the following days the Star Adders strike at several targets around the Kerensky Cluster striking no less than eight of the Homeworlds Clans including their allies, the Stone Rhino Clan destroying units all over the place loosing trinaries of troops but maintaining units.  The biggest moves in this campaign were a strike at the Clan Coyote territory on Foster which saw the Star Adders destroy an entire Cluster of warriors and claim a small firebase on the world and a strike at the Fire Mandrills in the Huntress system which saw the Star Adders destroy a Fire Mandrill WarShip and two clusters of troops.

The only real turn around for the Star Adders was in the Barcella system when they attempted to land a force on the world escorted by one of their WarShips.  Broadcasting a batchall from the Jump Point they did not bank on the Severn Leroux, Nova Cat Khan’s vessel and flagship, being in system supporting the local WarShip assets.  Although only the Anna Rosse-class Battle-cruiser met the Star Adders it was enough and they met far before the Star Adder invaders even reached the planet.  As the ground troops DropShips tried to avoid the incoming Battle-cruiser and its escorting DropShips and fighters the Constantineau, a Liberator-class Cruiser and veteran of the Inner Sphere fighting, attempted to fend off the Severn Leroux.  As had been standard Nova Cat practice since the launching of the Severn Leroux was equipped with two Titan-class, two Carrier-class Carrier DropShips and two Vanguard-class DropShips along with its own complement of fighters the Severn Leroux was escorted by nearly one hundred and fifty fighters.

While half of the fighters and the DropShips engaged and drove off the Star Adder ground troops the remaining fighters and the Severn Leroux ripped into the Star Adder WarShip.  Under the careful direction of Star Admiral Anders McKenna targeted specific areas of the Liberator while fighters targeted other positions.  After four hours the Constantineau was no longer able to maintain position or continue to fight without assistance, with their DropShips scattered or destroyed the Star Adder commander surrendered his vessel and crew to the Nova Cats.  Nova Cat Elemental Marines quickly secured the vessel and a prize crew with Tug-class DropShips arrived to keep the vessel under control following the damage caused.

Although it had cost them nearly eighty aerospace fighters and three DropShips the Nova Cats had netted themselves a new WarShip capable of being repaired and hopefully upgraded to Anna Rosse-class specifications, the Liberator like the Anna Rosse was based on the Star League-era's Avatar-class Cruiser.  Taking this as a victory the Nova Cats allowed the invading Star Adders to leave without further loss.  The Nova Cats then replaced the two lost Titan-class Carrier DropShips with newly acquired Raven-class vessels from Clan Snow Raven, these vessels could carry the same amount of fighters but have better firepower and chances of survival than the older design.

With this loss the Star Adders decided that they needed to secure their positions before making another rash move like Barcella and pulled back to their enclaves and the newly acquired territories.

Titan Shipyards
Titan Orbit, Sol System
Star League Protectorate
14th November 3072

With two Artemis-class Diplomatic Vessels under construction at the Titan Shipyards the Star League engineers saw wisdom in beginning to renovate some of the mothballed vessels held at the Titan Shipyards and in the dead space within the Sol System.  Starting small the Star League engineers began work on the CSWS Determination and the WoBS Liberty, two Vincent Mk.39-class Corvettes one belonging to ComStar another to the Word of Blake.  These vessels were in the best condition for refit and work began immediately.

The decision was made quite quickly that the Vincents would have their weapons upgraded to a more modern standard using the famed modular  structure of the design as an advantage.

Zi-jin Cheng (Forbidden City)
Sian, Sian Commonality
Capellan Confederation
16th November 3072

Everything was quiet on Sian, too quiet, Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao knew that something had to go wrong.  Sitting on his throne Sun-Tzu was reading a military report on the Trznadel Cluster Shipyards, soon they would be capable of creating WarShips there soon, the Capellan Navy could be rebuilt.  But at what point?  The Federated Suns, Free Worlds League Remnant even the resurgent Star League Defence Force all had significant naval assets, in a war on the scale of the Succession Lords the Capellan navy would have no chance of survival in head on confrontations with any of the nations.

Sun-Tzu felt depressed at the thought at that very moment Duchess Naomi Centrella-Liao entered the room with their son Dao-Shen in her arms, the two year-old was asleep, Naomi had a smile on her face.  The Chancellor felt worried already “what is it?”

“I have good news” Naomi said smiling again, she didn’t wait for a reply “I am pregnant, my husband.”  She said her smile seemed to get bigger, Sun-Tzu joined her in smiling another child, a future for the Capellan people and for the Liao family line, today was turning out to be a not bad day at all.

“It is time for a celebration”  Sun-Tzu announced standing a smile now on his own lips “I want all of the Capellan people to know before the end of this day that we will have another child.”  He said “and soon the whole of humanity will know, the Capellan Confederation is on the road to greatness.”

Nadir point
Dagda system, Kerensky Cluster
Clan Homeworlds
28th November 3072

The Nova Cat vessel Nebulous, a York-class Destroyer/Carrier, entered the Dagda system near several Star Adder JumpShips.  Moving at the Star Adder vessels the ship’s commander Star Commodore Galen Devalis then challenged the Star Adders to a Trial of Possession for the ships, their cargo and crews.  The Star Adders attempted to claim they could not fight because they were JumpShips and the Nebulous was a WarShip but the Nova Cat commander told them that they carried fighters and it would be Nova Cat fighters that were fighting for the Nova Cats, the Nebulous was only here as escort and transport.

Following a lengthy bidding process between the various DropShip and JumpShip commanders a force of Star Adder fighters comprised of aerospace units from all the ships was assembled and ready to engage the Nebulous’ fighters.  In a three-quarter of an hour battle the Nova Cat fighters are able to edge a victory over the Star Adder fighters who operate in single groups, like they were from different ships not a team.  Once the Nova Cats are able to isolate single points of aerospace fighters then the Star Adders quickly fall to pieces.  By the end of the battle the Nova Cats have defeated over eighty percent of the fighters and secured the JumpShip’s surrender.

Upon returning to Barcella with the three JumpShips, their attached DropShips, cargo and crew Khan Canin Rosse congratulates the crew of the Nebulous personally and announces a new Provisional Garrison Galaxy will be formed on Barcella with the resources captured from the Star Adders and the new units he had brought from the Inner Sphere.  That night however Canin has a vision, which he shares with no-one, instead he recalls all the Watch Keshik to their DropShip and orders the Vanguard into space.  In orbit they are met by the Severn Leroux which immediately moves to a pirate-point near Barcella and jumps, the Khan is needed in the Inner Sphere, a great storm is on the horizon.

Nadir Point Staging Area
Unknown System, Deep Periphery
3rd December 3072

Following their replacement in the Clan Homeworlds the Nineteenth Striker Regiment of the Eridani Light Horse Brigade had made good time on their journey back to the Inner Sphere.  They were a couple of systems clear of the Draconis Combine charging their K-F Drives and Lithium Fusion Batteries when disaster hit.  As the eight JumpShips charged their drives protected by an aerospace fighter screen, a necessary precaution in the Periphery, three WarShips jumped into the system.  The vessels two Pinto-class Corvettes and one Riga-class Frigate bore no identification marks.  They offered no challenge or warning and immediately opened fire on the nearest JumpShip destroying two vessels in the opening salvo killing an entire Battalion of the Nineteenth Striker.  As aerospace fighters attempted to divert attention away from the JumpShips the WarShips destroy another JumpShip and disable another.  While troop DropShips disengage from the stricken JumpShip the remaining four JumpShips ‘hot-charge’ their Jump-Drives and leave the system.  Last sensor logs suggest the remaining fighters and DropShips attempting ramming attacks against the three WarShips however the fate on these units is unknown.  The Nineteenth has lost half its troops and heads for Dieron to join the rest of the Eridani Brigade, it will take years to rebuild and the entire Inner Sphere is now confronted by a new threat from the deep.

Near Orbit
Marik, Marik-Stewart Commonwealth
Former Free Worlds League
24th December 3072

Two days before Christmas an unknown vessel had entered the Marik system and begun a steady burn towards the homeworld of the Marik Family and seat of the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth government.  The WarShip Corinth, a Thera-class Carrier, stood over the world with its escort DropShips and over two hundred fighters however the target was an unknown.

On Christmas Eve the target revealed itself to be a Black Lion-class Battle-cruiser, a smaller vessel than the Corinth but one designed specifically to destroy enemy WarShips unlike the Thera, which was a Carrier designed for non-direct combat.

Ahead of the Black Lion came four DropShips and their combined fighter screen along with the Battle-cruiser’s own fighters.  At first the Free Worlds League crew on the Corinth thought the DropShips were being sacrificed, sent as a diversion, and sent half their fighters along with their four DropShips to intercept, however, they soon realised this mistake of this action when their DropShips were swiftly destroyed by Capital Missile fire from the DropShips, information re-laid from the fighters identified the DropShips.  Two Excalibur-class ‘Pocket WarShips’ and two Mule-class Q-Ship ‘Pocket WarShips’ all mounting capital missile launchers and better anti-fighter weapons.

Knowing that the fighters alone would not be able to stop the four DropShips from gaining weapons lock on the Thera and causing heavy damage the Corinth’s commander ordered the vessel to shift position and provide cover for the fighters while deploying the second half to support the first wave of fighters to destroy the enemy DropShips and their fighter escort.

This move allowed the Black Lion the space it needed, moving in the Battle-cruiser kept the Corinth at bay with a combination of capital missile and Naval Autocannon while the DropShips fought a loosing delaying action keeping the fighters tied up and worrying the Carrier’s gunners with capital missiles.  As the Black Lion manoeuvred its true target was revealed as the broadside guns on the port side opened up, twenty Naval-class autocannons sent first one, then two and finally a third salvo of weapons fire down onto the planet below.

As the fighters finished off the last of the Black Lion’s DropShips and fighters the Black Lion broke orbit and began heading deeper into the system firing one last salvo towards the planet before firing another salvo, this time from the opposite side of the vessel, this time targeted at the Corinth.  The Carrier’s heavy armour absorbed most of the damage however some got through and the message was clear if the carrier followed it would be destroyed.  Fighters made strafing runs on the Black Lion but it was soon up to speed and to a Pirate Jump-point.  With a flash of light the mystery attacker was gone.   Having sustained damage to most areas of the ship, lost its DropShip escort and a quarter of its two hundred-plus aerospace fighter complement the Corinth was ordered to return to Marik for orders.

From orbit the devastation could be seen clearly.  Although Marik was a harsh world and had been built almost like a series of bomb shelters it had never been tested.  The Marik family fortress at Dormuth had been battered parts of the Royal Residence, where Captain-General Corrine Marik resided were totally flattened.  To the south the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth command at Malket was ablaze on the ground, no word had reached the underground areas of the command base.  In the end over thirteen thousand civilians had been killed in the attack and Captain-General Corrine Marik had been injured in the attack.  In the days following the Corinth’s commanders were quietly retired from service for their incompetence.

A day later on Augustine in the Rousset-Marik Alliance the mysterious courier arrived to collect his bounty from Duchess Alys Rousset-Marik for the job done on Marik.  Alys accuses the man of being a war criminal, of not caring about the collateral damage and for fudging the job in not killing the Captain-General.  Instead of allowing them to cause more damage in a second round of attacks Alys pulls a pistol on the courier and kills him with as single shot to the head.

Although the Rousset-Marik Alliance can never come clean over their part in the attack Alys has had her revenge on the assassins.  The Black Lion-class Battle-cruiser is still unaccounted for having never once entered the Augustine system and disappeared completely from the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth.

A new year more fun....

3073

Proving Grounds
Northwind, Star League Protectorate
8th January 3073

For the first time in months Lt. Colonel Jeremiah Rose was sitting in his Warhawk’s cockpit leading his troops onto the field and it felt great.  The eighty-five ton Clan-designed and built OmniMech moved confidently and reacted as if he had never left but Jeremiah felt different somehow.  Since becoming a Colonel of Northwind there was a new sense of purpose and responsibility in him and the other former Black Thorns.  The Northwind Renegades were a brand-new unit, and although they had received some experienced warriors from other Highlander unit’s the were very inexperienced and were organised in a completely new way.  Over the next few months they would be watched very carefully.  “Okay people let’s make sure we put on a good show, Stirling’s Fusiliers are one of Northwind’s best and most famed units, we are here to show we deserve to be the next to join that line and to gain the Inner Sphere’s respect.  No mistakes, no trouble.”  Jeremiah said quietly “Thorn One to Control check.”  He said on a separate communication frequency.

“Clear Thorn, we have a couple of stragglers in the epsilon quadrant but they are picking it up, nice speech by the way Colonel.”  Control said, Jeremiah smiled Control was his younger sister Riana Jackson.  Although she was a MechWarrior and would normally be riding alongside him because of recent myomer implants in her legs as treatment for damage caused in battle.  Riana was on a strict light duty order from doctors, she’d pushed to be allowed in the Regiment’s command vehicle near Castle Northwind watching the battle via remote operated vehicles (ROV‘s).

“Understood, keep an eye for me.  What about the Fusiliers?”

“They are pushing forward still just beyond the canyon, looks like Stirling wants to give us a straight fight.”  Riana said quietly “the air-cover on both sides are fully engaged.”

“And?”  Jeremiah asked spotting the first Fusilier’s Mech on his scanners, a forty-five ton Shadow Cat, Clan OmniMech.

“We are being hammered, their superior numbers and tech are telling.”

“Understood, have spotted enemy.  Keep an eye on the fighters, I want to try to keep at least a squadron in reserve but commit as necessary.  Engaging single Shadow Cat at point Zulu Sixteen-One.”

“Understood Thorn One, good hunting” Riana said and cut the link.  The Shadow Cat fired a single volley from its paired Extended-Range Large Lasers then began to run, wishing to report what it had discovered.

“I think not.”  Jeremiah said quietly linking all four of his assault Mech’s arm mounted Extended-Range Particle Projection Cannons to the targeting computer module buried in the torso.  Pulling the trigger Jeremiah began to feel the heat from the weapons overwhelm the heat sinks, one problem with the Warhawk it always seemed to want to overheat when its main weapons were used.  In the great distance three of the four bolts of man-made lightning struck the Shadow Cat one on the left leg the other two on the Mech’s back.  The powered-down weapons burned away simulated armour and tore into internal structure and systems.  Off to Jeremiah’s right a brand-new Black Watch OmniMech opened fire on the Shadow Cat as well this time with a Light Gauss Rifle.  The Ferro-nickel slug tore into the same area Jeremiah’s Extended-Range PPCs struck on the torso and must have hit something critical because the forty-five ton OmniMech dropped like a sack of bricks smashing into the ground as simulated damage overwhelmed the gyros and dropped the Mech to the ground.  The first kill of the day.

Eighteen-and-a-half hours later the battle was over following Andrea Stirling’s command company over-running Jeremiah’s own command unit, Jeremiah’s own Mech falling following heavy engine and leg damage.  The units had both fought well but the Fusilier’s better skill and superior aerospace cover had won them the day, during the debriefings several of the Fusilier’s officers had commented on the Renegades promise, however in Jeremiah’s eyes they still had a long way to go.

University of Thorin
Thorin, Freedom Theatre
Isle of Skye, Lyran Alliance
12th January 3073

Following three years in and around the site of the University of Thorin archaeologists are convinced that they have salvaged all they can from the previous site and clear out allowing construction teams to move in.  The teams instantly begin to clear the site of and dig down to lay the foundations for the first building of the rebuilt University of Thorin.  The guarding Fifteenth Royal Battle Armour Battalion, of the Second Battle Armour Corps of the Star League Defence Force, shift their defensive duties from the archaeologists to the construction teams and their equipment.  Because of the local Thorin Militia however these troopers are finding they are more often assisting in construction duties than combat or training.  To ensure the troopers do not get totally disheartened Major Katherine Spade, the unit’s commander, sets up a series of monthly excises with the local Militia troops in an effort to maintain discipline and combat readiness.  This move is supported by both the SLDF Commanding-General, the local Isle of Skye Regional Commanders and Lyran Alliance High Command officers.

Peace Conference
Barren Rock, Pleiades Cluster
Capellan March, Federated Suns
21st January 3073

There had been one stipulation for the planned peace conference that both Marshal Baron Cham Kithrong, commander of the Taurian Concordat, military and Field Marshal Baron George Hasek, commander of the Federated Sun Capellan March, were both in attendance.  It had taken months to arrange first what security could each take, then where it would be, when, how long the talks would take place for.  Eventually the two men met aboard the Ajax, a Fortress-class Assault Ship, belonging to the Medusan Mercenary Command which had landed on a barren rock within the Pleiades Cluster but one that had been untouched by the recent fighting.  Although the Medusans were in the employ of the Federated Suns the Taurians had agreed to the talks taking place here because the Medusans were not a Federated Suns unit and not engaged in ground operations against their military.

Following several days of talks which included a complete break-down and threats of total war from both sides the Hasek and Kithrong came to an agreement.  The Taurians would retreat from the Pleiades Cluster worlds and the worlds would be given the right to vote for their independence from the Federated Suns and a return to Taurian rule after centuries under the Suns.  With this agreement the Federated Suns begins a staggered withdrawal from the Cluster leaving only regular garrison troops in place, the Taurians follow suit as agreed.

A month later once all the fighting had stopped and all foreign troops had been removed the Federated Suns as promised allowed the Pleiades Cluster population a vote on where they wanted to stand and under what flag.  Although there was rumours of a DMI or MIIO backroom ‘fixing’ of the vote the results came in a week later and the Pleiades Cluster had narrowly voted to remain part of the Federated Suns.  A week following this result the Taurian Concordat announce that they respect this decision and are standing their militaries down to peace time readiness.  Field Marshal Hasek responds to this by standing down local Capellan March forces and allowing the Taurian Concordat more trading concessions with the Cluster saying that “although the Pleiades people are more comfortable living under the flag of a succession lord, the Flag of House Davion, we will not forget where they come from or who they are still connected to.”  Although the Federated Suns do also increase the size of the local militia to a full RCT with two full aerospace wings in support to monitor the increased Taurian presence in the region.

Periphery system
Near Taurian Concordat
29th January 3073

At a nadir point in the Periphery an Invader-class JumpShip, the Independence of Filtvelt, was sitting idle charging its Jump engines before the next jump on it’s long haul journey from Filtvelt to Fronc as part of the Reaches Coalition Pact shared by the two nations.  This journey was normally no trouble however today a Taurian Quetzalcoatl-Scout-class JumpShip, the ship had been on a routine patrol when Taurian Intelligence assets, the Taurian Ministry of Intelligence (TMI), directed them to this system.  The fighters launched from the Quetzalcoatl-Scout quickly surrounded the Independence of Filtvelt, under the threat of destruction the JumpShip crew surrender.

Following fifteen hours of interrogation by their Taurian captors the secrets of the Reaches Coalition Pact are revealed.  Six hours later orders fall down from Taurus that the Independence of Filtvelt and its crew are to be released and allowed to travel on its way.  A week later JumpShips arrive in both the Filtvelt and Fronc systems baring Taurian Concordat colours.  Following several discreet meetings and negotiations between the three nations the Taurian Concordat are added to the Reaches Coalition Pact.

Downtown
Pollux, Sirian Concordance
Star League Protectorate
4th February 3073

Following a dinner to celebrate ten years of independence from the Free Worlds League and ten years of the Sirian Concordance improving and gaining membership in the Star League Protectorate.  Primus Helen Thrall, former-FWL General, representative for the Concordance Worlds within the Star League and local leader, along with several members of her close staff and ruling cabinet are gunned down on the world of Pollux outside a popular restaurant.  The ambush is nothing but a professional hit with the Primus' party hit from at least three separate points, with not time or cover they are gunned down the Primus herself takes six slugs and is pronounced dead on the scene.

New Haiti, Proving Grounds
Nova Cat’s Den, Periphery
19th February 3073

Following successful debuts of the SM-1 and SM-2 Hover-tank Destroyers the Nova Cats have the confidence to build the third in the SM-series this one is to be configured as a sniper and an anti-aircraft model featuring a class-30 Heavy Assault Gauss Rifle which has proven to be very effective against aerospace, VTOL aircraft and targets at extreme ranges.  The Nova Cats plan to assign a Trinary of SM-3’s to each Galaxy to be assigned at the Galaxy Commander’s discretion, Tau Galaxy based on New Haiti once again become the first Galaxy in the Nova Cat Touman to receive this new craft.  Like before there is grumbling in the Nova Cat Touman and Trials against the Galaxy because of its favoured position on New Haiti.

High Orbit Tathis
Kerensky Cluster, Clan Homeworlds
25th February 3073

Sitting in high orbit over Tathis in the Clan Homeworlds the Sea Fox WarShip Terror of the Deep, a Nightlord-class Battleship, watched as the last of the Sea Fox Civilians and Merchants lifted from the world.  The Sea Foxes were abandoning permanent residence on Tathis for the last time.  In a deal between Khan Hanna Coston and Khan Stanislov N’Buta the Sea Foxes were transferring three clusters worth of troops disheartened by the recent Sea Fox moves and all the Sea Fox territory on Tathis to Star Adder control they had gained full control over the WarShips Renown, another of the Clan's remaining Potemkin-class Troops Cruisers, and the Cho Plu, a Volga-class Transport, both of which the Sea Fox Khanates could use in the future.  The only territory they now held was on Strana Mechty, shared capital of the Clans.  The other Clans take serious exception to this move however the Sea Foxes refuse to say what they are up to or how they plan to support their civilian populations, no votes of abjurnment are called or would pass too many rely on the Sea Fox Clan for trade.

Also on Tathis Clan Stone Rhino transfers its enclave to Clan Star Adder as well gaining access to one of the Clan’s Orbital WarShip Caches in response.  The Stone Rhinos take the General Stuart, an ancient Aegis-class Heavy Cruiser, from the cache and move it to the Lum system for refit at the Shipyards.  This brings the Stone Rhino fleet to six WarShips three Aegis-class Heavy Cruisers, One Riga-class Frigate, One Essex Mk. I-class Destroyer and a York-class Destroyer/Carrier.

Planetary Government, President’s Office

Following months of negotiations the President of the Rim Collection William Roberts links the six worlds of his small nation to the Lyran Alliance himself becoming a Duke of the Lyran High Court.  The Rim Collection becomes the Distant Rim, a new region of the Lyran Alliance with the Able’s Aces and the local militia on the former-Rim Collection worlds becoming the newly formed Seventh Alliance Guards, the plan if for this unit to eventually become a full Regimental Combat Team.  Colonel Jerry Able remains commander of this new unit for now however he like his former president is looking for retirement.

Third Martial Olympiad
Defiance, Crucis March
Federated Suns
8th March 3073

The beginning of the Third Martial Olympiad on Defiance begins with a grand ceremony presided over by the current First Lord, and Federated Suns First Prince, Victor Steiner-Davion.  Alongside the Olympiad grounds a brand new Star League base also begins operations.  Also as an extension of the Martial Olympiad a new WarShip event is added to the competition.  Help apart from the ground Olympiad the WarShip event covers everything from tactical manoeuvring, Fighter and DropShip formation control and simulated space combat.

In the space surrounding Defiance every nation that decides to take part in this event has three days to impress the judges and score points along certain defined criteria.  However in the end of the three days it is clear there are only two vessels in the fight for the crown, both ancient Aegis-class Heavy Cruisers, the Lord Death of Clan Snow Raven and the Vision Quest of Clan Nova Cat, the only two Clan vessels to be entered in the competition.  Both vessels are veterans of the original Star League and their crews have learned lessons directly from the decendants of the Star League within their Clans.  Although it is a close competition the Nova Cat vessel loses out to the Snow Raven craft by the smallest of margins and the Snow Ravens claim the Martial Olympiad Naval Crown.  The two Clans have set down the gauntlet and the standard however, everyone now knows what will be expected for a ship entering this contest in the future, this spurs on the Succession States to give more funding to WarShip training in effect improving the Art of Naval Combat throughout the Inner Sphere which was exactly the point of the original Martial Olympiad.

Third Martial Olympiad
Defiance, Crucis March
Federated Suns
14th March 3073

Surprising all at the Martial Olympiad Clan Sea Fox arrive in the Defiance system with three WarShips the Nagasawa, a Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Cruiser, the Red Tide, which identifies as a Sea Fox-class ArcShip a previously un-encountered class spacecraft it appears to be an extensively modified Potemkin-class Troop Cruiser, and the Nebula, a Carrack Merchant-class Transport.  All these vessels indent as member ships of the Snapping Jaws Khanate of Clan Sea Fox and that their leader saKhan Angus Labov wishes to speak to the leaders of the Inner Sphere or their representatives on Defiance.  Following communications with Defiance and First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion SLDF and Federated Suns WarShips watching the Sea Fox vessels allow them to close on the planet and for one DropShip to land on the world.

As the ground Martial Olympiad competition continues saKhan Angus Labov meets with representatives of all the assembled factions of the Inner Sphere and the nearby Clans, who although not part of the SLDF are at the Martial Olympiad because it is an excuse for them to show their martial prowess.   Labov announces that the Sea Foxes have begun to create city ships from their Potemkin-class Troop Cruisers and that these vessels are now classed as Sea Fox-class ArcShips, he goes on to announce that other than territories held on certain worlds and on Strana Mechty the Sea Fox Clan will hold no other territories or invade the Inner Sphere.  They announce that they plan to travel the Inner Sphere as Warrior/Merchants selling technology and their services and fighting trials over things that they want from the Inner Sphere and Clans.  The Clan representatives cause a lot of commotion over this not liking the Sea Fox plan however the Sea Foxes point out that the Council of the Clans already discussed the Sea Fox way and did nothing which quietens the Clans at least temporally.

Over the coming hours Sea Foxes make agreements with each of the Inner Sphere powers and the Star League Defence Force agreeing not to enter certain systems, Terra included, without permission.  This meeting shoots saKhan Angus Labov to the forefront of Inner Sphere politics with now every diplomat and leader present knowing him by sight, it also marks the beginning of the Khanate split in Clan Sea Fox, a permanent dividing of the Clan over old Galaxy Lines as each vies with the others to find the best deals.

Fisk Royal Residence
Odessa, Donegal Province
Lyran Alliance
27th March 3073

In a light morning rain a Monarch-class DropShip Civilian Passenger Liner came quietly to rest on the tarmac of the Odessa Spaceport.  This was not an usual occurrence, almost daily such craft landed on the world which was a secure interior world of the Alliance.  However as soon as the vessel landed two light BattleMechs and a limousine approached collected several passengers from the craft and sped away arriving at the Fist Family Royal Residence soon after.

An hour later two BattleMechs bearing the insignia of Snord’s Irregulars Mercenary Unit which was attached to the world’s defenders on a short-term contract.  The Irregulars were formerly part of the Wolf’s Dragoons and known as Clan Snord to the Clans due to their tenacity in combat and their not so insignificant complement of Clan Warriors that had been taken as bondsmen.  These two Mechs were not Clan designs however, the lead Mech was a Spartan assault BattleMech piloted by Irregular’s commander Colonel Natasha ‘Tasha’ Snord, while the second design was one of the most famous Mechs in the entire Inner Sphere.  Ranked along side the likes of Jamie Wolf and Morgan Kell and their Archers’ and Victor Steiner-Davion’s Dire Wolf Prometheus, anyone who knew anything about BattleMechs knew this Mech it was a classic Highlander Assault BattleMech piloted by none other than Colonel Rhonda Snord (retired) former commander of the Irregulars and poster girl for the MRBC for years.

Walking into the throne room of Odessa’s rulers neither Tasha or Rhonda were very amused, they had been working on a dig-site deep in the bombed ruins of the city of Bealton, they had been given full authority over the site, by the Archon’s Executive Order, and were not expected to enter any joint exercises with the local militia today.  Sitting on the throne was Count Luther Fisk, the noble of Odessa and a royal pain in the ass for the Irregulars, Rhonda took the lead the older Snord was past her physical prime but still very striking and when in a mood a terror to behold.

“Fisk, what is going on?  We are preciously close to a find in Bealton and you call us here.  What could not have gone over the radio?  Or was so important that you couldn’t come to us?”  She asked not caring if he was a noble or not, the Irregulars had fought the Clans for years bleeding for the Alliance now they had peace the Archon had allowed them a choice of assignments.  One of Rhonda’s last official acts as commander of the Irregulars was to pick Odessa as their assignment and specifically the Ruins of Bealton, radioactive or not the Irregulars analyst and research staff on Clinton had pointed to the world as being the source of a large SLDF-era vault full of valuables and exotic finds.

“It is not me, my dear Colonel” Fisk said not even the Colonel’s attitude bothered him today, what followed should be interesting.  “Colonel, allow me to introduce Agent Anton Gramash of the Lyran Intelligence Command (LIC).”

“Colonel, I’m very happy to meet…” Anton began to say however Rhonda wasn’t stopping there.

“Who the hell are you?  And what the hell do you want?”  Rhonda asked turning on Gramash.

“Colonel, here I have a contract and an executive order…”  Anton began again, revealing a document, this time the younger Snord interrupted him.

“What the hell do you mean you have an executive order?  So do we, and I’m sure mine predates yours.”  Tasha said scanning the document.

“Colonel, this executive order from the Archon orders that my staff and I are attached to your unit, and your dig.”

“Agent Gramash, the Archon promised us exclusive rights to the dig and that we’d be left to our own devices unless the Lyran Alliance declares war or is attacked.  As far as I know neither of that has happened.”  Rhonda Snord said calmer this time.

“Colonel, we have no intention of giving you trouble about the Bealton Dig site, in fact that executive order” he said indicating to the piece of paper held by Tasha Snord “from the Archon orders: your pay rights to be doubled while on Odessa, your unit to cease all joint exercises with the local militia…” Anton said only to be interrupted again this time by Fisk.

“What!!  The Irregulars are here under my disposal, they are required to train with my troops.”

“Count Fist, you will follow this order or I will follow my orders and begin an investigation into several of your recent financial records.”  Anton Gramash said looking right at Fisk, the Count became very nervous and silent.

“Double pay…”  Rhonda prompted Anton glancing at Tasha who was more closely looking at the order.

“Yes, Colonel, double your current pay, no more joint exercises, unobstructed use of local heavy lift gear and unobstructed access to the Bealton site.  The only catch is that you have to include my team in all your work and that once you find whatever is in the Star League-era Vault we get first access to anything you discover.”  Anton said looking at the two Colonels in turn.  “We have been following lead of something called the Ruins of Gabriel for the last three-and-a-half months, we have been led here.  Colonels, we are not interested in stealing some of the Irregulars finds, we just want some information on Gabriel.”  Anton said the two Colonels saw his determination and nodded.  An hour later several Lyran Heavy Lift Vehicles, with the LIC agents aboard, moved to the Bealton site with the two Mechs as escort.  From a distance the Star League Intelligence Corps agents assigned to the Odessa system to observe the Ruins of Gabriel and anything going near it began to wonder how long it would take the Lyrans to go down the right path.

Avalon City
New Avalon, Crucis March
Federated Suns
1st April 3073

It was the worse April Fool’s practical joke in Federated Suns history and one that gone horribly wrong however for the AFFS and the Davion Family it was the nightmare that had plagued them for centuries.  The Davion family had always had threats from outside Houses Kurita, Liao and even Cameron were all names that stood as equals to them however none had threatened House Davion’s control over the Federated Suns bar one, a specter of the past thought long gone.  For three centuries the name Varnay had been whispered in back rooms but never considered a real threat, now they chose to make their re-emergence, in the Heart of the Federated Suns on New Avalon of all places the threat and name returned.  Ten years of planning behind the Davion families back was thrown into action on an unsuspecting AFFS defence.

With a battalion of Irregular BattleMech forces supported by armour, infantry and aerospace fighters, all of unknown origin they charge into Avalon City from the surrounding suburbs directly at the Davion Royal Palace.  The defending First Davion Royal Guards Battalion in the middle of a changing the guards ceremony throughout the city engaged them but were horribly outnumbered and in a couple of short hours are forced back to the Davion Royal Palace and then into a full retreat protecting Duchess Danai-Centrella Davion and her children.  Just outside New Avalon Orbit several JumpShips arrived at one of the New Avalon systems secure pirate points, used for military operations, from these JumpShips a dozen DropShips full of troops from the Eleventh Avalon Hussars RCT and the First Capellan Dragoons Independent Regiment intent on bringing combat to the Davion capital.  As these forces began to make landing operations the First New Avalon Guards RCT moved to oppose them.

In space New Avalon’s naval defences began to move to defend the world and assist ground troops to repel the Varnay forces another surprise for the AFFS arrived.  At the Nadir Jump Point the FSS Hanse Davion, the First Prince-class Battleship originally gained from the Nova Cats, arrived identifying itself as the FSS Thunderchild, its name when it was the Varnay family’s flagship three centuries before.  Along with the Thunderchild are several JumpShips from the Seventeenth and Twenty-second Avalon Hussars Regimental Combat Teams.

On the ground the elements of the First Davion Guards RCT, the First and Second Avalon Guards RCTs and the First Albion Academy Regiment were fully engaged with the Varnay Irregular and the Eleventh Avalon Hussars RCT in and around the capital city.  At the Fox’s Den deep in the Davion Mountain Range Avalon Hussars Brigade commander Field Marshal Roger William Waters is found dead in his office an apparent suicide, on his desk signed orders for the Avalon Hussar Regiments to return to New Avalon and remove the Davion family from power are found along with documents showing he’d transferred AFFS troops with grudges against Victor Davion, those who had caused trouble in other units and supporters of Katherine Steiner-Davion, into the Hussars or sponsored supporters of House Varnay for positions within the units under his command.

The Fox’s Den wary of the threat posed by further hostile forces orders the planetary naval defences to move to engage the Thunderchild and the incoming DropShips.  The FSS Alexander Davion and FSS Sandra Black-Davion, both Davion Block III-class Destroyers and the FSS Simon Davion, an Avalon-class Cruiser, move from their positions in the Avalon system to engage the incoming forces.  Meanwhile a complete information black-out is placed on New Avalon in a surgical strike Davion Guards forces reach the world’s primary HPG and destroy the transmitter while secondary relays are targeted by Elite Special Forces the Fox’s Den relying on the ancient Black Box technology to communicate beyond New Avalon.

On the ground the as the Davion loyalist break the Eleventh Avalon Hussars RCT outside the capital an move to engage the Varnay Irregulars however the delaying tactics fought by the Eleventh Avalon have been effective.  The First Davion Guards RCT are at approximately seventy-five percent and largely scattered while other defending units are damaged or lacking in supplies abandoning their bases to fight the Varnay forces quickly.  The ground commanders decide to cut losses and streamline command at least temporally and merge the First Albion Training Regiment with the First Davion Guards RCT brining the regiment back up to strength and cutting the number of unit commanders.  However not all losses were so easily replaced it becomes clear in this break of fighting Field Marshal (Baron) Ardan Sortek has fallen in combat.  The Baron of the Crucis March had attached himself to the Davion Royal Guards Battalion in Avalon City as soon as the fighting had started and masterminded the evacuation of Duchess Danai Centrella-Davion and the royal family during the initial fighting however his Templar is confirmed to be down having taken a Particle Projection Cannon blast to the face just inside the Davion Palace Grounds, covering the retreat of the rest of the Battalion.

Defiance/New Avalon system
Crucis March, Federated Suns
4th April 3073

As Davion naval forces moved to engage the Varnay forces approaching New Avalon the Varnay family was boasted with the arrival of two Fox-class Corvettes, the FSS Indefatigable and FSS Fox, and the Avalon-class Cruiser FSS Ian Davion along with ground force regiments for the First and Second Chisholm’s Raiders Regiments, both of whom have recently had their funding and recruitment cut, and the Thirty-ninth, Forty-First and Forty-Second Avalon Guards RCTs in what could only be described as the ultimate betrayal of the Davion family and a move that could threaten to start a Civil War.  The Davion loyal Naval forces are now outgunned four to three WarShips and if all the ground troops arrive on target the defenders of New Avalon will be overrun by sheer numbers.

On Defiance Marshal of Armies Reinhart Steiner draws First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion to one side, they had been at the Martial Olympiad overseeing the contest in Victor’s role as First Lord of the Star League. “Sire, I have grave news.”  Reinhart started unable to fully express the sense of loss he was feeling, even for an officer of the AFFS not born of the Federated Suns this news hit home.

“What is it?  Not Faith?”  Victor asked thinking perhaps Reinhart was speaking of personal loss.

“Neg, sire, Faith is fine as is Danai and all our collective children.”  Reinhart said speaking of their two families, they were comrades on the battlefield and close enough that he felt comfortable speaking with his First Prince like this.  “Sire, New Avalon is under attack.”  Reinhart finally said finding the words the First Prince looked like he would choke on breath itself.

“What!!”  He almost screamed, Reinhart had never seen Victor Steiner-Davion so angry before.  “By whom!!?  What are our losses and why the hell am I not on a DropShip?”  The First Prince asked in rapid succession.

“3 Days ago, the HPG has been destroyed this was relayed using Black Box, the Varnay family have launched an attempted coup, launching a full assault on the New Avalon system.  They claim your complacency is your family‘s death.”  Reinhart said Victor began racking his brains for the name Varnay as Reinhart continued “an Irregular force stormed the Royal Palace however the First Davion Royal Guards were able to repulse them.  This attack was followed by almost the entire Avalon Hussars Brigade, the First Capellan Dragoons and both Chisholm’s Raiders Regiments…”

“How the hell was this missed by DMI?”  Victor demanded interrupting the Marshal of Armies mid report, Victor had given other officers and cadets into trouble for doing just as such.

“Unknown.  Supporting the Varnay ground assets is the WarShips Fox, Indefatigable, Ian Davion” Reinhart noticed Victor wince at that mention, an Avalon-class Cruiser being subverted was bad but not as bad as what was to come.  “And the FSS Hanse Davion” Reinhart said quietly noticing Victor’s surprise then anger “which the Varnays have renamed Thunderchild.”

“I want our forces withdrawn from the Martial Olympiad immediately and have my DropShips ready to lift off the pad by the time I get to the spaceport.  We are going to Galax.”

“Galax?”  Reinhart asked, he’d expected his First Prince to charge down on New Avalon like an avenging angel and he'd been ready to follow him however looking at Victor he suddenly realised this was a man who had grown-up a lot since his impulsive youth and the Clan Wars.  He was the warrior of those times but his fighting spirit had been tempered and controlled by the experience of being a leader.

“It’s the best muster point for our forces first” Victor said beginning to move “cut orders for the entire Davion Brigade of Guards to be recalled from active positions and to muster at Galax and inform the March Lords of our status and New Avalon’s have them hold back on sending any forces directly to New Avalon without my say so.  If their forces reach New Avalon without my permission they will be considered as hostile and I’ll shoot them myself.”  Victor warned leaving the room with Reinhart right behind the Marshal of Armies they began to head down the other end of the corridor before he disappeared Victor turned and called “Reinhart, one last thing.”  The Marshal of Armies turned “contact Hadrian’s Command, have them bring out the Pegasus, they will know what it means.”

“Aye, sir” Reinhart answered he had no idea what the Pegasus was, but considering what Hadrian’s Command was secret naval command, and what it had brought the Federated Suns so far he was very hopeful.

Hope was something the Federated Suns was in dire need of.  In the New Avalon system about a days travel from system’s star the Federated Suns Davion loyal navy forces were engaging the Varnay forces, and it wasn’t going well.  The Varnays had split their forces the Thunderchild and Ian Davion had come in and engaged the three naval vessels while the Fox and Indefatigable had remained clear protecting the ground forces and providing capital missile support.  Being a target of the opening volley the FSS Sandra Black-Davion was adrift in space its crew forced to abandon ship, the Avalon-class FSS Simon Davion was heavily damaged and under fire continuous while the FSS Alexander Davion was attempting to push through a heavy fighter screen to the ground forces and their Fox-class escorts.

Against two vessel the FSS Simon Davion stood little chance however it had done some telling damage on its sister ship, the Ian Davion, making the Rogue Avalon struggle to manoeuvre properly.  And with the Thunderchild’s attention focused on the Simon Davion the back door had been opened for the FSS Alexander Davion to attack the ground forces.  As one final act the FSS Simon Davion lit up their K-F Drive attempting to escape, with this act they blinded the Thunderchild’s sensors temporarily.  Unfortunately, either through damage or a miss calculation the FSS Simon Davion never appeared at its intended location, three months would pass and an extensive search of all systems within two jumps of New Avalon would be made before the FSS Simon Davion was officially marked as Missing in Action by superiors.

Despite the best efforts of the two Fox-class Corvettes defending the DropShips the Alexander Davion continued to close quickly dispatching the Indefatigable with several volleys of Naval Autocannon and laser fire.  This act alone sent the DropShips into a panic not wanting to be the destroyer‘s next target, unfortunately for them this move made it easier for the FSS Alexander Davion’s gunners who were able to destroy or badly damage around a dozen DropShips before the Fox, Thunderchild and Ian Davion were able to regroup and pull the DropShips back into a defensible position.

Under orders from the Fox’s Den not to lose all their ships in this engagement the FSS Alexander Davion’s commander ordered the Davion to jump from its current position to New Avalon orbit using the same pirate point used by the Eleventh Avalon Hussars ground forces in their initial insertion.  From there the FSS Alexander Davion reported to the Fox’s Den on the battle while receiving replacement parts and supplies from secure landing zones on the surface.  On the surface the arrival of the Federated Freemen and Wild Geese Mercenary Regiments from other New Avalon continents bolsters the defenders forces which are continuing to attempt to dislodge Varnay Irregulars from Avalon City, to little success.  In deep space the Varnay taskforce regrouped and were able salvage the heavily damaged Sandra Black-Davion pressing it into service despite damage done to major systems.

Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
10th April 3073

Unknown to the defending Davion loyalists or the attacking Varnay rogue units there is a third force on New Avalon during the fighting.  Slipping into the capital the Fox’s Teeth linked up with a group of NAIS cadets led by Prince’s Champion Colonel Ross McKinnon and his wife Rabid Fox offier Major Rachel McKinnon.  Through the course of the rebellion the Fox’s Teeth are able to conduct several operations against the Varnay Irregulars, using the NAIS Campus grounds as a base of operations, before running low on supplies and contacting the main Davion forces surrounding the city.

Arranging a break-out from the city Prince’s Champion Colonel Ross McKinnon sat quietly in his Black Hawk-KU OmniMech’s cockpit, something was wrong he could tell.  It wasn’t that he was operating inside his nation’s capital and that an enemy was in control or that his command had been forced to use an academy as a base of operations but there was something very wrong about tonight.  Outside the City the First and Second New Avalon Guards RCTs were waiting for them, unfortunately there was a lot of open ground between them and more cover.  On his Mech’s right shoulder sat his wife and executive officer, Rachel McKinnon suited in her own Infiltrator Mk. III Heavy Battle Armour.  A brand-new evolution of the Infiltrator design which was much larger than previous models and had superior abilities.  Rachel had received the suit about a week before the Varnay attack and her squad were still getting used to its capabilities and limitations.  Now she was trying to get him on a private channel “What’s up?”  Ross asked flipping the communication system over to her frequency.

“I was wondering the same about you, something wrong?”

“A bit” Ross answered hesitantly, this was between them but still he was in command he should promote a sense of readiness and confidence “it’s just something feels off.”

“Then you should call this off” she warned

“We can’t the New Avalon Guards are waiting for us out there, we don’t have the supplies to continue this guerrilla campaign and the rest of New Avalon needs to know what we know about the Varnay Irregulars in the City.  In the week they had been in the city Ross and Rachel and later the rest of the Fox’s Teeth had seen that the Varnay Irregulars, as they called themselves, stood at nearly two regiments of combined-arms troops, all were former-AFFS troopers, who had been cashiered by either Victor’s or Reinhart Steiner’s order due to continuing and vocal support for Katherine Steiner-Davon to be the true leader of the Federated Suns despite her position in Clan Wolf, and their command base was the former Davion Family Royal Palace.  They also had records of a major Varnay push aimed at the Fox’s Den was planned, the defenders of the world loyal to the Davion family needed to know about this.

“Well our time to go is now.”

“Roger that” Ross said swapping communication frequencies “Fox Actual to all Fox units” he said it was strange retaking that call-sign, since he wasn’t truly a member of the Fox’s Teeth anymore, but Captain David McKinnon, his younger cousin and the company‘s commander, had insisted.  “This is it ladies and gentlemen, we don’t stop for anything or anyone, once clear of the city keep running until you receive friendly Identification marks, do not return fire on the city unless you can confirm targets we don’t plan on having civilian casualties caught in the crossfire.  Understood?”  He asked there was no answer just a group of clicks “NAIS pups, you have got plenty of manoeuvrability in those crates, keep moving at full throttle and we’ll get out of here.”

“Understood Actual” came the reply from the lead vehicle, they were in four light Hover APCs a couple of machine guns and paper for armour was all they had, they had to run.  Ross was confident in them however as they were led by one impressive young man Leftenant Damien Redburn, son of former-Prince’s Champion Andrew Redburn, he’d kept all the cadets following the same line doing what he did – following orders.  He’d get them through, one day Ross could see the young Leftenant commanding one of the AFFS most elite units or being one of the best undercover operators around, he was very capable and someone Ross planned to keep an eye on, assuming they got through tonight.

“Okay people, move” Ross ordered throttling forward accelerating to maximum speed, the entire Fox’s Teeth line followed suit, they got around one hundred metres before the Varnay Irregular forces lying in wait for the Fox’s Teeth to reveal themselves opened fire.  Three of the Fox’s Teeth and one NAIS APC were destroyed in the opening volley, a full third of their force.  “Hell” Ross whispered, they were in trouble continuing to Run his Mech he could see Rachel and her squad still holding on for dear life.

   “We need a miracle.”

“What the Fox’s Teeth does best” he said out-loud throttling to a stop Rachel would know what he was planning and didn’t say a word as he turned ready to charge the Varnay forces.

“Fox Actual, this is Sword One, I have you covered” came a new voice on the radio, Ross did not recognise the voice or the call sign.  But he did recognise the Mech, from the shadows of the darkened city a Dire Wolf Clan Assault OmniMech revealed itself, decked out in colours of First Kathil Uhlans the pilot said nothing else and instead charged full force at the Varnay lines.  Ross watched the Mech then turned and ran his Mech to the Davion lines a kilometre away, the Dire Wolf had been the ride of former-Prince’s Champion Marshal Andrew Redburn commander of the First Kathil Uhlans.  Although he’d retired the Marshal had done his nation one last service on his sensors Ross could see the mighty Clan Machine engage no less than five enemy units at once.  Although a fearsome design that could take and dish out tremendous amounts of damage soon the Dire Wolf disappeared from sensors Ross quietly wondered if Damien Redburn aboard the APC had recognised the voice or the Mech, if not Ross would make it his duty to keep that man’s legacy alive far beyond this crisis, today he’d saved the Fox’s Teeth and perhaps New Avalon.

Another fine April Fool's joke. }:) ;D

I think a certain First Prince and his family would disagree  O0

Thrown Room, House Davion Royal Palace
New Avalon, Crucis March
Federated Suns
11th April 3073

The throne of the Davion family was in another’s hands, their greatest enemies and once upon a time their biggest threat, the Varnay family.  Long thought extinct or too far away and no longer a threat located somewhere in the backwater of the Capellan Confederation, sitting on the First Prince’s throne Jacob Varnay smiled at his triumph “we are victorious” he said looking down at the other person in the room Teri Varnay, his daughter and only surviving child.  “The only things we are missing that Canopian bitch, her children and Vic Davion’s Mech in the garage” he mused quietly, the Prince must have taken his Mech off planet, while his wife was missing..

“Hardly, my unit is dead” Teri said quietly, she’d been serving with the Eleventh Avalon Hussars before this, she’d help turn almost the entire unit against the Davion’s single handedly, and now they were dead “and we are surrounded” she said continuing, House Davion forces continued to rule most of New Avalon while the remains of the Capellan Dragoons and her father’s Varnay’s Irregulars held the city.  The rest of their forces were in system close to the world almost within range of the planet but not quite in orbit the FSS Alexander Davion, a ship named for the First Prince that defeated the Varnay family first time around, sat watching them.

“Where is Field Marshal Waters?”  Jacob asked quietly, the Avalon Hussars Brigade Commander had been due to come from the Fox’s Den and join them but had yet to arrive.

   “He’s dead”  Teri answered quickly.

   “Dead how?”

“Suicide” Teri said “our agent within the Fox’s Den brought out the data on their final run.”

“Damn the man, we could have used him in keeping the Hussars inline.”  Jacob said quietly moving forward “continue to send updates to the Hussars using Waters name, if anyone asks tell them that he is in the medbay at the palace after an attempted assassination.”

“Understood” Teri said the Hussars had come inline with Waters influence and Teri’s moving around in the Brigade however without him their loyalty may no longer be bought.  “Our attack on the Fox’s Den?”

“In concordance with the landings of the other forces, there will be plenty of distractions to keep the Davionists busy and away from our actions.  We also need to get the HPG online, I need to speak with the March Lords.”

“Tomorrow should be a interesting day” Teri said moving off leaving the throne room.

“Everyday is a interesting day” Jacob muttered quietly, relaxing into the throne, the First Prince‘s throne, for too long the Davion‘s had claimed it as their own it was time for change.

Various Locations
New Avalon, Crucis March
Federated Suns
12th April 3073

The rest of the Varnay loyal forces arrived in near New Avalon orbit, several flights of aerospace fighters supported by Assault DropShips and the FSS Alexander Davion attacked them.  Although only two DropShips were destroyed the Ian Davion received heavy damage as did the Thunderchild.  Before the Varnay forces could retaliate against them the Alexander Davion lit-up its K-F Drive and jumped clear of the system retreating to the Galax system to regroup with Victor Steiner-Davion’s forces, DropShips and fighters from the defence force broke and ran from the Varnay forces retreating to points within the New Avalon system waiting for reinforcements.

Without any naval assets to oppose them the Varnay force were able to land en-masse on New Avalon virtually unopposed.  The two Chisholm’s Raiders Regiments dropped onto New Scotland and Rostock, two of New Avalon’s other continents, there they engaged elements of the Federated Freemen and the Wild Geese Mercenary Regiments.  In a continuous battle the Second Chisholm’s Raider’s regiment are destroyed as were the Federated Freeman while the Wild Geese and the First Chisholm’s Raiders continue their struggle in a series of low-intensity battles across Rostock.

The Seventeenth, Twenty-second, Thirty-ninth, Forty-first and Forty-second Avalon Hussars all dropped onto various points of the Albion continent engaging the House Davion-loyal First and Second New Avalon Guards RCTs outnumbered and outgunned the two RCTs continued to struggle but in the end were forced to retreat from Avalon City effectively handing control of the capital to the Varnays and turning the battle into a guerrilla war with both Davion loyal RCTs heavily battered by the Varnay forces.  Finally good portions of the Varnay Irregulars and the First Capellan Dragoons Regiments launched assaults on the Fox’s Den, there to meet them were what remained of the First Davion Guards RCT led by Field Marshal Bishop Sortek.  In a nearly eight hour battle the First Davion were heavily damaged but refused to break while the Varnay forces were send retreating into Avalon City the First Capellan Dragoons destroyed and the Varnay Irregulars heavily depleated.

The WarShips Thunderchild, Fox, Ian Davion and Sandra Black-Davion all take up orbital positions around the planet turning New Avalon into a virtual fortress world thankfully their guns remain on space and not on the ground troops.

Baltazar III
Timbuktu Theatre, Bolan Province
Lyran Alliance
14th April 3073

Assigned for the first time off their Homeworld Glengarry since the Clan War, although they had fought battles on Skye and Hesperus II these were reactive actions to attack not postings, the Gray Death Legion takes up station on Baltazar III in the former Cirincus Federation directly opposing the Marian Hegemony and the Duchy of Tamarind-Abby forces in the region.  There the Gray Death Legion sit as the Lyran Alliance’s primary defensive force of the previously unknown BattleMech factory on Baltazar III, this assignment marks the first combat/garrison deployment of the Legion under Alexander Carlyle and the first since the last Skye rebellion.

FSS Andrew Davion (Avalon-class Cruiser)
Galax System, Crucis March
Federated Suns
20th April 3073

“You understand your mission and what you need to do Major-General?” Marshal of Armies Reinhart Steiner said quietly looking at the young officer ahead of him Sheldon Zibler.

“We understand Marshal, the Andrew Davion just needs to get us close and we will open New Avalon up to the First Prince’s forces.”

“I wish you and the Eighteenth the best of luck.”  The Marshal of Armies said saluting before stepping into one of the shuttlecraft, this was a risky plan but one that needed to be done.  Sheldon’s unit the Eighteenth Federation Airborne Brigade, supported by an Avalon-class Cruiser, would drop onto New Avalon link up with resistance forces and set up landing zones for the liberation forces.  The all elite infantry Brigade included four regiments of infantry forces and an entire regiment of Battle Armour to accomplish the task.

Moments later the Marshal of Armies left the ship and the Andrew Davion jumped clear of the Galax system entering the New Avalon system via a pirate point.  Immediately the six DropShips carrying the Eighteenth Federation detached from the cruiser, Commodore Ayden Weir, looked at the two WarShips set to oppose them the Ian Davion and the Sandra Black-Davion, the two most damaged Varnay WarShips.  “We got lucky” he whispered “have all fighters run full throttle into their CAP, get their attention, send to all friendly naval assets now is the time to act.”  He said raising from his chair as the Andrew Davion came fully online following the jump, easiest would be to jump clear again but then the ground troops would be target practice “Showtime” Ayden said as the battle was joined the forward naval lasers, autocannons and AR-10 multi-purpose capital missile launchers began to lash out at the rogue ships.  “Concentrate firepower on the destroyer, sensor data from the Alexander Davion she’s the most damaged.  Screens and anti-missile systems concentrate on fire from the cruiser” Ayden ordered he couldn’t even bring himself to name the vessels, so sick was he at firing on a Davion-built and named craft.   As the Andrew Davion turned more weapons were brought on-line “keep us within the pirate point, and keep an eye out for the Thunderchild that is not our target today.”  The last thing they needed was to face the Battleship in combat, Ayden had read the battleship’s schematics and seen the records of what it had done to the Simon Davion before the ship’s disappearance, an Avalon’s armour could take a beating but it wouldn’t last forever against that firepower.  The amount of fighters the First Prince-class could bring to battle alone would overwhelm the Avalon’s defences given a short time.

“Sir, we have several DropShips appearing from holding points in the system they are promoting friendly Identification signals.  One Claymore-class, two Avengers and an Excalibur-class Pocket WarShip supported by a couple of dozen fighters.”

“The Alexander Davion’s sensors suggested several friendly DropShips survived the initial battle.”  Ayden thought out loud not thinking it would be four assault DropShips “give them a guarded welcome and have them launch a full attack on the cruiser, concentrate on the port side armour, that was worse hit by the Alexander Davion.  If they do a good job give them full support.”  Ayden said as the Andrew Davion’s weapons array hit the enemy destroyer full force naval weapons of all size tore into the vessel punching through the forward armour and causing some internal damage including a visible forward decompression and a destroyed weapon turret.  These newcomers could be friendly or a very clever Varnay ruse but this would prove it either way.  “Continue to fire” Ayden said noticing the damage “bring us around to point four of the loop” he said the Andrew Davion’s course was designed to allow the cruiser to manoeuvre but at the same time remain within the pirate point entry zone.  Off to the vessel’s port side the Claymore and one of the Avengers were destroyed by the cruiser and half a dozen of the fighters, their fight wasn’t going well.  “Recall the two remaining DropShips, they‘ve given what they have, provide cover fire” he ordered as the broadside weapons array also opened fire on the Sandra Black-Davion, naval autocannons, gauss rifles and missiles tore into the destroyer.  Overkill if there ever was, some of the damage tore into the autocannon ammo bins which when breached started a chain reaction engulfing the destroyer in fire.

“Sir, message from General Zibler, his troops have landed on New Avalon, DropShips are heading to safe zones held by the New Avalon Guards and on Mount Davion.”  The communications officer reported.

“Understood, have those DropShips dock.”  He said pointing at the inbound Excalibur and Avenger. “Helm as soon as those ships are secure spool-up the K-F Core, link in the LF Battery and activate Jump engines don‘t wait for my order, we are getting very lucky today” Ayden ordered, they had done their job.  The Andrew Davion’s gunners continued to fire keeping the Varnay forces and the remaining cruiser at bay as the two remaining damaged DropShips docked then as the Avalon jumped back out of the system, one registered kill and a successful deployment Ayden Weir was a very proud man of his ship and crew.  The Liberation plans for New Avalon were also on course with an extra elite force on New Avalon.

Federated-Boeing Megaplex
‘Floating Tower’, Galax System
Crucis March, Federated Suns
28th April 3073

The alarms across the control room on the Federated-Boeing Floating Tower in the Galax system went crazy as the sensors detected a massive craft approaching the station and the shipyards.  “Red Alert, prepare to launch all fighters and contact all defence assets we have an unknown vessel approaching.  Size suggests that it’s got to be either the Thunderchild or something else big, trouble.”  The watch supervisor said, although not military they worked hand-in-fist with the AFFS to defend the system.  Almost at that same moment First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion, a guest aboard the station, who was still waiting for the last of his forces to arrive before leaving to liberate New Avalon.

“Supervisor, call off your alert, that ship is ours.”  He said the staff in the floating tower looked at their First Prince for more but Victor refused to speak further.  “Keep our forces where they are, they might want a look, it will all be in place soon.  If you bring up visual sensor six you will see our newest surprise for the Varnay family.”  The Prince said walking over to the main plasma screen, the screen flickered and an image appeared of a massive vessel.  With forward slopping armour alligator-shaped vessel with two massive launch bays on either side of the main hull, a large engine assembly could be seen at the rear.

“What on earth?”  The supervisor asked as the vessel began broadcasting an IFF Code “FSS Pegasus” one of the Federated-Boeing staff whispered.  “It can’t be the ship’s a myth.” He complained out aloud forgetting it was his First Prince ahead of him, the Pegasus had disappeared centuries ago during the Second Succession War, much akin to the LCS Invincible from the Lyran realm, the WarShip had been sent on a mission the exact orders and their results still classified today however the ship never came back its whole existence become a myth, along with its sister ship Rycon which had also disappeared.

“The FSS Pegasus, a Columbia-class Battleship, held in mothball for centuries until it was required.”  The First Prince said quietly, as soon as he had replaced his father as First Prince and learned of the Camelot Command at Hadrian’s Anchorage he’d been chomping at the bit to see the Pegasus returned to duty and now was the time. “clear the vessel to attach to one of the docking ports, I plan to go aboard.”

“Of course, sire” the one-and-a-half million ton battleship moved slowly into the Megaplex for all to see over one thousand-one hundred metres long it was a behemoth from an age where the nations of the Inner Sphere built vessels that were truly impressive.  The vessel was double the size of the Avalon-class Cruiser, currently the largest vessel under construction in the Federated Suns, and a rival to the Nightlord and Texas-class Battleships fielded by the Clans.  It would be more than a match for Varnay controlled First Prince-class Thunderchild.

With the Varnay fleet forces confirmed concentrated in orbit of New Avalon and beside the system’s pirate points by Davion loyal ground forces First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion and his liberation forces arrive in the New Avalon system at the Zenith and Nadir Points quickly securing both and the recharge stations without any major conflict, even the Varnay controlled Stations were not stupid enough to fire on a WarShip with their minimal weapons.

Along with the ground troops are three WarShips the FSS Pegasus, FSS Andrew Davion and the FSS Alexander Davion, which is still suffering from damage despite the best efforts of Galax engineers, and almost two dozen JumpShips carrying all the seven remaining Regimental Combat Teams of the Davion Brigade of Guards.  The three WarShips took up a protective spearhead ahead of the DropShips as they began the journey in system.

From planetary orbit the Thunderchild, Fox and the badly damaged Ian Davion along with an assault DropShip force left orbit heading towards the Liberation fleet.  Seeing the Thunderchild move from orbit First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion ordered the Pegasus to carry out the mission it was designed for.  There was a reason to fit massive inter-planetary engines on a vessel the size of the Pegasus, insert combat teams safely and quickly and intimidate defenders into keeping a distance.  The Pegasus had the speed and armour to ensure a combat team survived running a blockading force while having the firepower to claw its way clear.

As the massive Columbia-class Battleship increased speed the Pegasus swiftly extended its lead over the two other WarShips of the Liberation Forces, soon the Pegasus was pulling four gravities strength of acceleration more than many WarShips a third its size and more than any of the other vessels in the system were even capable of, it wasn‘t the greatest environment for the crew or the unfortunate ground forces riding ‘piggy back’ but it was by far the safest way to get them in system.  At these speeds trying to target an enemy vessel was difficult as was changing course to follow.

Detecting this massive vessel heading towards them the commander of the Thunderchild withdrew his WarShip from the others leaving the other two vessels and their assault DropShips ahead of the Thunderchild.  The Pegasus soon arrived at their location the massive vessel didn’t slow to engage instead it traded long range fire with the Fox and Avalon before powering on in system.  Neither of the Varnay loyal vessels had caused the battleship heavy damage to the Pegasus nor had they slowed it down at all leaving the Thunderchild alone to face the mighty vessel.  Now it was Battleship against Battleship, a true test of Titans that would determine the future of the Avalon system, if the Pegasus fell the Thunderchild would overwhelm the FSS Andrew Davion and the already damaged FSS Alexander Davion and then pick off the Davion Brigade with its massive armament.  The crew of the Pegasus knew that if they needed to they would be required to commit the ultimate sacrifice to stop the Thunderchild and secure the way to the planet, but first it was time for a passenger of the Pegasus to get off.

“Pegasus Actual to Prince One” the Pegasus’ commander said standing in the centre of the Pegasus control room; the vessel’s deck layout was old compared to modern WarShips.  Instead of the longer more rectangular bridges on more modern vessels the Pegasus featured an oval shaped command deck with the commanders situated in the centre with easy access to all commands.  In the centre the commander had access to all the crew he needed and a small holo-tank with additional monitors that fed all the important ship data in easily accessible locations.

“Prince One here, go ahead, Admiral” Victor Steiner-Davion said from Dire Wolf’s his position in the Mechbay of the DropShip FSS Conquistador, the first Conquistador-class Troopship to enter service with House Davion, still attached to the Pegasus’ underside the Pegasus size and construction featured specially reinforced docking collars specifically for the increased speeds the Columbia-class was designed for, it was not comfortable for the DropShip crews or their passengers but it was by a far in the way the safest way to travel.  Victor had ordered all crews preparing to launch to be in their Mechs and vehicles for the trip so there was no delay when they hit the atmosphere of New Avalon.  He still hated the fact he had to take such measures to return to his own capital world but needs must.

“Sire, we are approaching the Thunderchild’s position, we will detach your ground forces before we engage them in combat.  We will cover your decent and eliminate the threat.”

“Prince One copies all Admiral, just remember your limitations she isn’t fully operational, only eliminate if you can ensure the Pegasus’ survival we didn’t keep this ship safe for centuries to lose it on its maiden mission.”  The First Prince warned with a small smirk, the crew of the Pegasus had trained for months on its systems restoring the vessel to combat capabilities and helping the engineers begin a widespread upgrade the conventional lasers had all been upgraded to Extended-Range versions however the Kraken-Teleoperated capital missile launcher tubes were still non-operational robbing the craft of some hard hitting firepower and there were questions over some of the heat dispensation units in the aft sections.  Victor hated using the ship when it was only half ready however there was no choice they needed something to match the Thunderchild, for perhaps the one hundredth time he cursed the Nova Cats for returning the Battleship to the Federated Suns, perhaps if that symbol had never returned the Varnay family would never have seen the signal to move against the Davions.  The First Prince knew his own limitations he wasn’t the great leader Alexander Davion was nor was he his father he’d made mistakes, big mistakes, some unforgivable which no doubt he’d pay for one day.  But letting the Varnay family supplant the Davions as rulers of the Federated Suns would not be one of them.

“Understood sire, we have the speed and fighters to complete the job, I am not too concerned, the Pegasus has been ready for a long time we won’t let her down.”  Moments past and the Admiral came back onto the communication’s channel again “prepare to detach DropShips… and detach Godspeed Heavy Guards.”  Even from his perch high above the deck aboard his Mech Victor felt the Conquistador drop loose from the WarShip and begin to maneuver immediately accelerating under its own power and begin an evasive entry into New Avalon’s atmosphere.  The troop DropShips were heavily armed but they needed to do everything they could to avoid fire alongside Victor’s vessel were three more identical vessels all carrying elements of the Davion Heavy Guards RCT.  He knew below his Revenants were involved in the heaviest of the fighting but if felt good to be with the Heavy Guards, today would be his first true combat with the command and despite the situation and their location he looked forward to it.  As the DropShips began to drop onto New Avalon they launched their own escort fighters as the Pegasus engaged the Thunderchild, a true battle of the titans.

With the First Prince and his ground force clear from battle, shielded by the Pegasus, the WarShip could now turn on the renegade vessel that threatened Davion control of the system.  The Columbia-class armament was simple rows of Naval Lasers and nose mounted particle cannons gave the firepower while the engines were designed to bring the weapons to bear on a target.

The one-point-five million Pegasus was bigger and faster than the Thunderchild but it gave away firepower to the other vessel using a combination of Naval Particle Cannons and Naval Lasers the two massive vessel engaged.  Unlike the words of many around the Inner Sphere Davion pilots knew how to fly spacecraft, in the past some public displays of inadequate skill had labeled the Davion’s as “Ram first ask questions later.”  Now however both vessels piloted by people trained in Davion schools and practiced on Davion ships danced as only Battleships could with wide turns, devastating broadsides and nose to nose sniping battles.  The Pegasus aimed to get its nose on the Thunderchild to bring its particle cannons in line and then bring its broadside lasers to bear as it passed.  While the one million tonne First Prince-class Battleship Thunderchild returned fire with a combination of Naval Gauss, Capital Missile and autocannon spread along its hull.

Although both vessels lacked DropShip support their fighter wings were still loose in a mass dogfight which seemed to follow the two mighty battleships as they turned and fired.  One moment a fighter would be on another in a deadly battle of speed, maneuver and skill then it would be confronted by a mass of metal that could soak all its firepower and return with a single shot that could wipe out any fighter in an instant.

It was a battle the New Avalon system had not seen the likes of in centuries and one none of the fighter pilots or WarShip crews would ever forget.  The battle’s outcome continuously swung from one ship’s advantage to the other although the Thunderchild carried more weapons than the Pegasus, had more fighters and per salvo they were doing more damage, the Pegasus had heavier armour, far superior speed, better gunners and better fighters with more skilled pilots.

As the two craft maneuver the Pegasus continuously used its speed and tried to bring its forward array of four Heavy Naval Particle Projection Cannons in-line with the Thunderchild concentrating on hitting the Varnay’s flagship amidships causing large holes to be bored into the side of the vessel.  On one such pass the heavy weapons cut straight through the Lamellor Ferro-carbide armour to surrounded the Thunderchild’s hull melting straight through bulkheads to the AR-10’s magazines.  Such a hit should have caused the weapon to be disabled and minor internal damage but something in the Thunderchild’s safety systems failed the resulting internal explosion tore along the hull opening several decks to open space and rupturing the Thunderchild’s fuel tanks amidships.

Throughout the vessel the crew quickly realized they now had two threats one outside in the form of the still menacing Pegasus and the other aboard their vessel fire which consumed the same air aboard the vessel that kept the crew alive.  As the battleship’s crew scrambled to extinguish the flames and save their craft outside the Pegasus refused to let up, even as the Thunderchild turned away from battle they followed up their initial assault with several Naval laser blasts as the Pegasus sailed past the stricken Varnay Battleship.  These blasts although nowhere near as damaging as the Particle cannon onslaught caused yet more damage and confusion as they ruptured side of the Thunderchild.

With the damage taken, the fire still raging on-board and the refusal of the Pegasus’ crew to give up the crew of the Thunderchild, former loyal members of the AFFS sold on the Varnay dream for power knew they were doomed.  If they abandoned the vessel they would be captured, an escape pod would never leave the New Avalon system unless aboard a Davion loyal vessel.  As they continued to battle the fire and try to move into open space so they could jump clear of the system the Pegasus turned once more in a wide banking turn it graceful almost animistic turn clear to all.  All the Varnay and Davion aerospace fighters seemed to sense the deathblow coming and it appeared the Thunderchild was abandoned in an instant as the Pegasus charged in one last time.  First the deadly particle cannons and lasers mounted to the forward hit again burning through the armour of the Battleship in a deadly nose to nose charge.  The Pegasus unhindered by damage and fire slipped to port providing it’s broadside with a clear shot at the Varnay vessel, then the Pegasus rolled along its same course providing its other broadside guns to the enemy vessel instantly another broadside tore through the Thunderchild.

It was all too much for the massive battleship, the Thunderchild stopped firing any weapons, its remaining engines locked on a ballistic course for a moment it appeared the vessel was still running however sensors aboard the Pegasus told a far different story, the reactors of the Thunderchild were operating well beyond their capacity, fire had ravaged her innards.  In a final call the Thunderchild’s reactors gave way to containment and exploded in a massive fireball that tore through and consumed everything that was recognizable as a space going vessel.  For weeks to come New Avalon citizens would be treated to an artificial shooting star show as pieces of the Thunderchild, thundered through the atmosphere and burnt up.

Though the Pegasus was victorious the ship was forced to retreat from the system following its battle with the Thunderchild, the hard burn in system then the extensive high levels of thrust used during the battle along with age and wear-and-tear had caused almost as much damage to the vessel as the Thunderchild’s weapons had.  Hearing of the Thunderchild’s demise and the Pegasus victory First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion himself involved in combat ordered for the ship’s surviving aerospace fighters to land at friendly airfields on New Avalon while the Pegasus herself retreated back to Hadrian’s Command for full repairs and retrofit and ignore all hails from any civilian or military force on the way.

The journey back to Hadrian’s Command took nearly two weeks as the crew carefully plotted courses through uninhabited systems and limited the Battleship to a single jump at a time.  Once repairs had begun it became obvious the ship would be out of service for at least six months as its engines needed massive amounts of maintenance and repair but at least it had survived its maiden voyage and opened the door for the liberation of New Avalon.

Deeper in the system, still two days from New Avalon, the FSS Andrew Davion and FSS Alexander Davion, and the rest of the Davion Brigade of Guards received news of the Pegasus success and that Victor Davion was now personally taking the fight to the Varnay commands on the planet.  Supported by this the two WarShips and a group of assault DropShips had fully engaged the Fox, Ian Davion, their assault DropShips and fighters that tried vainly to stop the incoming forces.  In a very one sided battle the FSS Alexander Davion and FSS Andrew Davion destroyed the Fox and already badly damaged Ian Davion.  Clearing the way for the Davion Brigade to race towards New Avalon unhindered, as the news reached the ground forces, morale across the Varnay commands took a hit, knowing more troops loyal to Victor were on the way.

Liberation Fleet
New Avalon system
Crucis March, Federated Suns
7th May 3073

Near orbit of New Avalon’s moon Valiant a Riga-class Frigate and a pair of Pinto-class Corvettes jump into the New Avalon system, the three ships immediately set an intercept course for the Davion Guards and their escorts intent on stopping them reaching New Avalon.  After the battle these ships would be positively identified, using SLDF records, as the same vessels that attacked the Nineteenth Striker Regiment of the Eridani Light Horse in the Periphery.  In the initial salvos the Alexander Davion takes a hit on the port side cargo bay door causing an explosive decompression venting its contents to space causing sensor confusion and dangers to aerospace fighters.  As allied and enemy aerospace fighters and DropShips try to avoid the Alexander Davion the Riga and its Pinto escorts moved in for the kill on the Davion III-class Destroyer however in doing so they exposed themselves to fire from the Andrew Davion.  The Avalon-class Cruiser although damaged in previous combat with Varnay forces still had plenty of firepower availiable moving at a course parallel to the Alexander Davion is able to catch the enemy WarShips attention by destroying one Pinto with a volley of ten Killer Whale-class capital missiles.  With the Alexander Davion still struggling to deal with containing its hull breach and spilled cargo the two enemy craft turn on the Anderw Davion with has now shown itself as a serious target.

With Naval lasers and autocannon they struck out at the Andrew Davion trying to hold back the Avalon-class Cruiser, however the Andrew Davion was intent on clearing the way for the Davion Guards and returned fire with its own weapons cutting large swaths of armour off both craft.  At this moment the Alexander Davion and several assault DropShips having been given time to regroup into a combat formation then rejoined the battle and cut the second Pinto apart in a mass hail of weapons fire.  Seeing the demise of both its accompanying vessels and the return of the Alexander Davion broke the will of the Riga’s crew now outnumbered and well outgunned the ship began to try to run from the system.  The remaining AFFS forces in the ystem however had other plans, every DropShip, Aerospace Fighter and both WarShip in weapons range fired on the Frigate.  The massive concentration of missiles, autocannon and lasers cut into the Riga giving the crew of the Frigate the feeling of a death by one thousand paper cuts as the vessel was torn to pieces around them.  With complete Naval supremecy the remaining Davion forces were able to approach New Avalon unmolested within an hour of the Naval battle the Davion Brigade of Guards began landing all over New Avalon.

On the ground the arrival of the Assault, Heavy, Light, Second, Fourth and Fifth Davion Guard RCTs proved to death kneel to the Forty-first and Thirty-ninth Avalon Hussars RCTs which were cut apart with the combined firepower of six of the most elite, most upgraded and most committed units in the whole AFFS, their Ducal Family and capital had been attacked and they were out for revenge.  With so many reinforcements and no Naval vessels supporting Varnay faction‘s challenge was effectively over but they continued to fight, now with new purpose to hurt House Davion where it hurt the most kill the First Prince and his family.

New Avalon System
Crucis March, Federated Suns
12th May 3073

A group of JumpShips arrive at a pirate point, in the New Avalon system less than a day from the planet, dropping several DropShips towards the planet, on-board is the Twentieth Avalon Hussars RCT, these forces have ignored orders from the First Prince to stay away from the planet and avoid all Davion and Varnay forces landing on the planet.  The arrival of the Twentieth means all remaining active Avalon Hussar regiments had broken orders and travelled to New Avalon.

Following their landing actions and their complete avoidance of Varnay forces it becomes very clear the Twentieth are not here to join the Varnay forces.  Instead the regimental combat team under the command of General Jack Roberts had come to clear their name, marred by its sister units, and help finish the Varnay threat to the Davion family.

The Twentieth immediately goes on the attack against Varnay forces continuing to harry to First Davion Guards linking up with First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion’s command.  Although none of the Davion Guards or the New Avalon Guards trust them Victor sees a unit trying to make amends for mistakes of others and adds them to the forces holding around the capital pinning the First Chisholm’s Raiders and their three support regiments in place ready for the final assaults.

Davion Family Retreat
New Scotland, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
28th May 3073

Since their evacuation from the Davion Royal Palace masterminded by Arden Sortek and throughout the whole occupation of New Avalon Duchess Danai Centrella-Davion and her children had been hidden away on the planet moving from one safehouse to the next, some under the Davion name others under the names of trusted families so far they had accomplished this without incident.  Unfortunately the Varnay Irregulars, commanded by Jacob Varnay, plus attached units had been tracking her and had avoided the Davion Guard units that were rapidly taking control of the planet.  Jacob Varnay was driven now to cause as much pain on the First Prince as possible.

At almost the same time as Jacob’s force was approaching Danai’s position Victor Steiner-Davion was embroiled in an attack on Avalon City.  He'd miss calculated not expecting them to track down Danai, he had pushed all his forces into an attack on the capital to end the rebellion swiftly in one action.  Now that choice could cost him his entire family to break away would cost him the Battle for the city and probably the whole Davion Heavy Guards.

As the Varnay Irregulars moved in the Fox’s Teeth Company, with Colonel Ross McKinnon, his wife and a group of NAIS Academy cadets who had remained attached to the unit throughout the conflict, held the main defence.  They were being supported by elements of the Eighteenth Federation Airborne Infantry Brigade commanded by General Sheldon Zibler.  Together they had a very capable force however they knew would be enough to stop the Varnay Irregulars and their support.

To make matters worse for the Davion liberators in high orbit the AFFS WarShips detected the Severn Leroux and several Nova Cat DropShips burning for the planet, with the FSS Alexander Davion or the FSS Andrew Davion unable to intercept in their current conditions.  The Nova Cats had neither been invited or expected in the system by the AFFS, with the Nova Cat Embassy and Firebase on New Avalon’s New Scotland continent remaining quiet during the entire conflict.  Without communication to any force on the planet’s surface elements of the Nova Cat’s Watch Cluster and of Tau Galaxy dropped directly ontop of Danai Centrella-Davion’s position.  Colonel Ross McKinnon now found himself facing off against Khan Canin Rosse, someone her respected, and Tera Varnay, some he despised.  Unable to fight both McKinnon needed to know the Nova Cat’s intentions so he took a gamble and ordered his force to turn his back on the landing Nova Cats and class the incoming Mechs and Battle Armour as friendly.

On the field of battle Jacob Varnay could not help but brandish a irresponsible smile although the Victor Davion had arrived with his Davion Guards, the Thunderchild was destroyed in space and his forces were on the verge of being driven from the capital city he would soon win a personal victory over the House Davion crippling their future.  Moving steadily forward in his Atlas he could see the villa that covered the bunker Duchess Danai Centrella-Davion was hidden in, her and Victor Davion’s children.  “Continue to move forward.”  He ordered the warriors of the Varnay Irregulars, some were from regiments of the Avalon Hussars and were here through a promise of a better future others from bars Jacob had frequented and others he’d simply paid to be here they had loyalty to him as long as he could pay and thanks to the Liao’s he could pay plenty.

“Sir, we are detecting DropShips overhead.”

“DropShips?  Who are they?  Victor has no remaining forces…”  He said his voice trailing off as he saw several Mechs Drop from the sky, they were all Clan designs, he was in trouble.  “Unidentified force, leave now and you won’t be harmed; this is a House Varnay operation.”  He said into the open communications channel he couldn‘t help but sound worried.  He’d known that Victor was in bed with the Clans but he’d never expected a combat force to land on New Avalon.  For all he knew they could threaten the entire Federated Suns, it was his duty as a leader to oppose them.

“Neg” the voice answered “Jacob Varnay, I assume it is you I am speaking to Quiaff?”  He asked continuing as the first Clan designs began to land.

“I am he” Jacob said, he wasn’t about to hide the fact he was here to crush the Davion families next generation like the Davion family had tried to do to his family.
]
“Good Jacob Varnay, I am Khan Canin Rosse leader of Clan Nova Cat and I declare a Trial of Annihilation against your forces.”  The voice said Jacob didn’t understand it how did Victor have them supporting him?  The Clans should be rejoicing at his demise.  Why they were here?  What had Victor Davion given them from the Federated Suns for them to be here on New Avalon no-less!

“Khan Rosse, you have no right being here” Jacob said trying to recover “this is an internal Federated Suns matter.  If you are interested in exploring our relationship following this conflict, I will be willing to listen to your Clan’s proposals.”

“Neg, Jacob” Canin said dropping the man in his estimation even further. “I have every right to be here, your actions threaten to destabilize the Federated Suns and threaten my Clan’s position. You also threaten those who cannot fight for themselves, something I personally despise.”  Canin continued “This Trial begins unless you stand down now and submit to war-crimes against the Federated Suns, and a Circle of Equals against myself.  Surrender now and you may save your men.”

“Negative, you stand down” Jacob said triggering his AS7-11D Atlas’ weapons firing on a nearby seventy-five ton Timber Wolf cutting into the Clan Mech’s armour.

“You cannot even pick the right target” Canin said, his Dragon Cat was off to the left of the Timber Wolf and he was in perfect position to fire. “Watch Cluster, Tau Galaxy, fire at will. Destroy these dezgra dogs” the entire Nova Cat battle-line fired as one tearing into almost every single Varnay Mech, vehicle and trooper at once.  The Khan’s use of the term dezgra immediately released them from their dueling rules of engagement, concentrating fire the superior Clan weapons began to cut down units left right and centre.  Canin’s own Heavy Lasers and Advanced Tactical Missiles ripped into the Atlas stripping the forward armour of all sections, Jacob tried to return fire however his weapons fire was not nearly as effective as the Clansmen’s fire.

The Khan’s Dragon Cat was too swift for Jacob to track and Nova Cat vehicles and Battle Armour as well as what little Federated Suns infantry and battle armour began to break through Jacob’s lines cutting down Mech after Mech.  The Nova Cat’s new hover tanks and missile tanks were proving to be most effective in their attacks while the superior Nova Cat gunners and MechWarriors were proving the end of many Varnay Irregulars Mechs.  “Canin Rosse, perhaps you are correct, I am ready to stand down.  I will surrender to you Khan Nova Cat, not the Federated Suns”

“Too late” Canin answered firing again into Jacob Varnay’s Mech one of the Heavy lasers breached Jacob Varnay’s cockpit killing him instantly, the Atlas remained stationary for a moment suddenly lacking in any control, then the one hundred ton assault Mech toppled forward smashing its cockpit into the ground thirteen metres below there was nothing left of Jacob Varnay, the rest of the Nova Cats continued to fire brining down Mech after Mech until there were no Irregulars left.

Inside Avalon City at the same time First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion was leading a full strike into the capital targeting the First Chisholm’s Raiders Mechs tracking down the last forces that faced against him.  The Varnay forces were crippled, now the aim was limiting the damage they could do to his capital and his people.  He’d heard of the Nova Cat WarShip over New Scotland and that Khan Canin Rosse had landed forces around his Danai’s position but he had heard nothing since that report.  He had no choice but to trust Ross McKinnon, his Prince’s Champion, knew how to handle the Nova Cat leader.  Here in the capital his people were still too busy mopping Varnay’s rebellious forces to check out the situation on New Scotland, he needed to show he followed through on operations and what he was willing to sacrifice to ensure his nation survived.

Stalking his Dire Wolf Prometheus through the battle torn streets of Avalon City Victor fought a tear from his eyes, this was not the way things should have happened.  This was his capital all these people were his people, even those he fought against, he’d failed them all.  To himself now in Prometheus’ cockpit he promised he would never fail like this ever again.
As he moved his Mech forward he saw a Sagittaire BattleMech painted in Avalon Hussars colours standing at the end of the street, Victor immediately recognised the Mech and opened a communication channel to the Mech.  “Tera Varnay at last we meet.”

“Shame it couldn’t be under better circumstances” she said opening fire immediately with various pulse lasers and a heavy particle projection cannon.

“Wrong move” Victor said sidestepping his massive Clan Mech as he pulled his primary firing button on the command joystick triggering four Extended-Range Large Lasers and Long Range Missiles at the Sagittaire as he moved forward.  Tera’s Mech was lighter, it carried less guns and armour than Victor’s Dire Wolf but the Sagittaire had one thing in it’s favour it was designed to be an infighter, luckily for the First Prince so was the Prometheus.  Continuing to move left he pressed down on the second trigger of his joystick triggering his Mech’s main weapon an ultra-class assault -devastator autocannon along with his lasers, the combined fire of the weapons all together tore up the forward armour of the Sagittaire, the assault Mech even stumbled slightly before returning fire with its pulse lasers.  The Sagittaire’s fire was accurate cutting into the Dire Wolf’s legs and arms Victor wasn’t finished and continued to fire as he closed on the Mech.

With all the weapons fire going off at once the Prometheus’ temperature raised several degrees Victor held the assault OmniMech firm with what seemed like sheer sense of will.  Tera’s return fire continued to cut into the Dire Wolf’s armour her accurate pulse lasers designed for exactly this kind of fight.  She even triggered her particle cannon but not at Victor, instead she targeted a building beside the Sagittaire.  The building wasn’t built to withstand such a blast and exploded with bricks and mortar flying everywhere.  The wanton destruction angered the First Prince even more, she was firing indiscriminately no care for the people of New Avalon she just wanted to hurt someone if she couldn’t beat him she’d kill his people.

The First Prince’s anger boiled out of control he triggered his autocannon again and again, the shells tore into the torso making massive holes its armour.  The bursts of high explosive shells worked their way up over the Mech into the cockpit killing Tera Varnay almost instantly, the mighty Sagittaire now with no brain to keep it standing began to fall, Victor saw the Mech begin to fall, he’d seen the cockpit crushed under his fire, but he didn’t care he continued to fire autocannon shell after shell into the disabled Mech.  Finally his autocannon ammunition ran out leaving only the smashed husk of the Sagittaire to hit the ground with Victor’s Dire Wolf standing over it.  Where it had remained for several minutes before paniced calls from his Lance brought Victor back to reality “Tera Varnay down, continue mop up operations” he’d ordered on an open channel letting the remaining Varnay followers how he considered their continued fight.

The battle for Avalon City, although it would take weeks to clear out the last of Varnay’s supporters there was one image of the conflict that would travel around the Federated Suns and Inner Sphere beyond.  Victor Davion’s Prometheus standing over the destroyed remains of Tera Varnay’s BattleMech, people latched onto the image claiming it showed that their First Prince was dedicated to their freedom and would go all out to ensure they live free, Victor told no-one that in that very moment he was not in control of his actions and had been a danger to all around him.

Immediately after the battle however Victor had one concern the Nova Cats held the ground where his family were, a Nova Cat WarShip hung over them and the Nova Cat Khan was blocking all attempts from others to close on their position.  Leaving the capital Victor and his command company got on the first DropShip and headed for the New Scotland continent to see what the Nova Cats were up to, he didn’t want to go to war with them but would if necessary, if anything had been proven by recent events it was that his family was the most important thing to him over and above everything else.

Davion Family Retreat
New Scotland, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
30th May 3073

Though the threat to Danai Centrella-Davion, her family and their home appeared to be over the Nova Cat force were not willing to allow a single AFFS trooper, officer or civilian near the families position.  At the same time not a single Nova Cat trooper had attempted to enter the retreat.  Landing over a kilometre from the retreat Victor Steiner-Davion and his command company, rearmed from their battles in Avalon City approached the Nova Cats under a flag of truce.  His troops were ready for combat they really didn’t want to engage the Nova Cats and risk Danai and his family being in the crossfire.

“This is First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion to Nova Cat forces, I demand to speak to who is in charge here”  Victor said scanning the Nova Cat Mechs, Vehicles and Battle Armour troopers, in the air there was even more Nova Cat OmniFighters and Aerospace Fighters.

“Nova Cat Forces Atten-hut!!”  A familiar voice said over the radio, with that all the Nova Cat ground forces saluted the First Prince.  Mechs and Battle Armour troopers crossed an arm over their chest or chests while vehicles raised their turrets and fighters tilted their wings in salute as they soared by in a completely unexpexted show of respect.  “Nova Cats Honour Detail” Victor Steiner-Davion watched as the Nova Cat lines part and a single Dragon Cat OmniMech appeared at the end of the line and in a display that only an elite Clan warrior could perform the Dragon Cat preformed a half bow before the warrior spoke again. “Victor Steiner-Davion your family.”  He said stepping aside Danai and his children were on the porch of the retreat Victor had recognised the voice and the Mech as soon as he‘d, it was Khan Canin Rosse himself.

“Khan Rosse, what is going on?” Victor asked demanding to know what was going on, he didn’t understand why they had come so far for so little, it was completely unClanlike.

“A vision brought us from the Clan Homeworlds to this point, First Prince Davion.”  Canin answered looking over at the Dire Wolf.  Visions were strange beasts they came at you when least expected and could explain away a whole number of actions “your family were a target while you struck to liberate your capital, I could not let a coward kill a family just because he had failed, so we struck.  Friends and allies watch each others backs Quiaff?   With you and your family in charge of the Federated Suns the Nova Cats know where they stand.  I have little time to break in new rulers.”  The Khan added, which Victor guessed was a joke, when Canin didn’t speak more Victor wondered what had really motivated his actions, had his sister had an effect on Canin Rosse that even the Nova Cat Khan didn’t realize.

“Thank you, Khan Rosse and thank you Nova Cat warriors, you have served the Federated Suns and your Clan immeasurably today and this will be awarded.”  The First Prince said in an open channel reply, it would be hard to award the Clan but he would.

And so ends the Varnay Crisis, hope you enjoyed

and I always thought it was too big for forums...  :P

Fox’s Den, DMI Offices
Mount Davion, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
1st June 3073

Although only a couple of days had passed since the last battles on New Avalon the Department of Military Intelligence were already hard at work analysing everything that had happened in Avalon City and beyond searching for clues to any missing Varnay loyalists.  They notice that during the final Battle of New Avalon a company of SPT-NX Spartan Assault BattleMechs identical to those seen on a dozen worlds across the Inner Sphere is seen attacking both sides before disappearing after causing nearly a battalion’s worth of casualties on both sides.  The DMI begins an official investigation however nothing is found on New Avalon to lead them to any answers concerning this Assault Company.

Front Gates, Davion Royal Palace Grounds
Albion, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
5th July 3073

Following the Varnay Family assault on Avalon City, and the Davion family, and the defection of almost the entire Avalon Hussars Brigade the Royal family had remained tight lipped about the possible repercussions following the Crisis and any action that may be taken.  This had not sat well with the First Prince, hundreds of his people had been hurt in the action, the Royal Court had been destroyed, even the Royal Palace had been damaged by the Varnay family not caring about what they destroyed.  So Victor Steiner-Davion had, against the advice of the High Command chosen to speak to the public, an more importantly the Press who would take the story to the rest of the Inner Sphere, already images of Prometheus fighting in Avalon City were making headlines the Prince was unsure if he’d ever look at the Mech the same way again.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, we have weathered the storm.”  He began, looking down at the podium “mistakes were made, on every level but the blame lands at my feet.”  He started he was First Prince of the nation it’s Commander-in-Chief, he had more of a responsibility than anyone else.  “We have been forced to fight our countrymen because one family thought they deserved something that was never theirs.  We have been forced to fight within our own capital city because people we used to count as friends and allies chose to stand against us fighting the very people they should have defended.”  He said looking at the cameras one by one “today by Royal decree the Avalon Hussar Brigade has been stood-down from the rolls of the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns permenantly.  All active regiments before the Varnay Crisis have been stricken from the rolls permanently, all support staff for these units who remained at their previous postings are hearby under arrest by royal decree.  They will be screened and if found innocent of charges will be released from custody, they and you have my promise on this.”  He said pausing “the Avaon Hussars disgraced their name, their history and themselves all except for the Twentieth Regiment stood to destroy all we hold deal, all have been destroyed after forcing a fight within Avalon City.  The Twentieth Regiment exemplified what all the others failed to, standing by our nation and people, the Twentieth will remain standing as an independent regiment of name and posting until I decide otherwise.  If you are wondering who these men and women are, those who defied their Brigade to stand by their nation have a look around you, they guard this very area.”  He said, the AFFS Commanders still didn’t trust the Regiment but Victor was convinced that they were on his side and that they wanted to make up for the mistakes of the Brigade, which was why he had chosen to have them protect him here showing them he still trusted them and had faith in them.  Around the area he could see reporters look at the troops, who all wore standard AFFS field uniforms without insignia, some of the reporters looked more than a little worried, he suppressed a smile and chose not to mention the First Davion Royal Guards Battalion providing a second layer of protection against outsiders and possible further turncoats, or the DMI snipers on buildings in the area targeting nearly all the Hussars present, Victor may have trusted them but the High Command would need convincing.

“There is however a story about the Varnay Crisis that has not been made public yet” Victor said, this was the part that the Royals had been worried about. “During the fight for Avalon City Jacob Varnay, the head instigator of the conflict, lead an irregular regiment against the location where my family had been hidden by their bodyguard.  Though the Fox’s Teeth Company, commanded by Prince’s Champion Ross McKinnon, and some irregular Infantry forces from the Eighteenth Airborne Infantry Brigade attempted to stop them they were heavily outgunned.”  He explained, he could tell that many thought the worse had happened to the royal family and heirs “fortunately another force involved themselves in the fight without invitation in my family’s greatest time of need.”  Victor said pausing, possibly for too long as one of the reporters stood up.

“Who were these warriors?”  Reporter Laura Melville asked “why haven’t they been honoured with the rest of the forces that defended and liberated New Avalon?”  Asking a second question was considered bad practice when interrupting a member of the Royal family but Victor allowed it to slide, there would be bigger questions to come, bigger troubles on the horizon.  At that moment the first of these warriors began to appear, a group of twenty-five Elemental Warriors in jet black battle armour marching in from the wings in front of the podium, the reporters remained calm Victor had a personal security guard complement of Elementals which still used Clan Elemental Battle Armour, a couple more was not too alarming.

“These warriors were not members of the AFFS” Victor began, ensuring that there was no link between the AFFS and these troops, “nor are they mercenaries or Corperate Security forces.  Nor are they of the Star League Defence Force, or of any Succession or Periphery state.”  There were plenty such forces still on Defiance still taking part in the Martial Olympiad, it wasn’t too much of am ask for them to have moved to assist Victor; he had many allies and friends.  “In fact these warriors hailed from no Inner Sphere world.”  He said as a Star of five Clan OmniMechs marched from the Davion Palace behind the podium just inside the gates, the centre Mech almost immediately shut down and the pilot climbed out.  “These warriors you see now are members of the force that protected your Duchess and my children, however not all of them, their WarShip is in orbit of this very position.”  He explained, the reporters predictably looked upwards trying, impossibly to see the orbiting WarShip.

“They are members of Clan Nova Cat.”  he announced, the reporters went wild, Victor almost smiled the cat was out of the bag literally, Clan warriors on New Avalon.  He knew that Canin Rosse would get as much trouble for this as he.  “For the last ten years we have been in contact with the Nova Cats, ever since we found their new home in the former Tortuga Dominions.”  The reporters looked too stunned to say anything on took a picture of the Clan Mechs behind Victor but said nothing..  Laura Melville stood there her mouth hanging open; she had never expected such an announcement from the First Prince answering a simple questions.  “The Nova Cats mean the Federated Suns no harm, in fact they have gone at lengths to help us initially trading the FSS Thunderchild to us when they discovered it rusting-out in an asteroid field and helping us when ComStar abandoned the HPG Grid, in effect keeping many Federated Suns citizens in work and in contact with home.  They are not our people, they will never be our people, they are the Warriors of Kerensky as he planned them to be Wardens ensuring we learn from our mistakes instead of passing them on to our decendants.  Many of you have asked where my younger sister Yvonne now resides, I can answer you, she chose to join Clan Nova Cat.  Learning their ways joining their Clan as a warrior and an equal, my sister has proven that although the Clans are mighty, we can live with them instead of fighting against them.”  Victor said looking around the gathered conference, he knew he would have lost some votes of confidence with that statement and no doubt have completely permenantly alienated the Lyran half of his father’s nation but he had the Federated Suns to care for now, Peter could deal with the Lyrans.  It was time for his knock out blow as Khan Canin Rosse joined him on the podium, before he had started this he had checked with Canin about this plan, the Khan liked it.

“Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, of the Federated Suns and the Inner Sphere I present to you Khan Canin Rosse, Leader of Clan Nova Cat.  The warrior who killed Jacob Varnay saving my family, including the heir to the Federated Suns throne, he did this at great personal risk to his own life securing my family’s future.”  He said reminding them all exactly what Canin had done “Khan Rosse, I want to personally thank you for your force’s action in saving my family during the recent trouble.  I would like to thank you by awarding you with something.”

“First Prince Davion, my Clan needs, nor wants anything from the Federated Suns we have a home stay away from it and you will remain safe, cross us and you will feel our might.”  Canin said evenly, they had planned it like this.  He would continue to be the arrogant Clan Warrior, the people of the Inner Sphere expected, while Victor played the Inner Sphere leader looking for a solution it would help Canin with the Clan’s politics and Victor with the rest of the Inner Sphere.  “We are a Clan, we take or we trade for what we need, we do not accept gifts.”  Canin continued showing his defiance, this way he kept face with the other Clans when they saw this meeting in recordings.

“There is perhaps something I can ransom to you” Victor said using the Clan term “something that will improve our relations and make things easier in the future.  Khan Canin Rosse, I would like to invite Clan Nova Cat to hold a foreign embassy in the City of Dundee on the Continent of New Scotland.”  The reporters went mental the Clan’s had just been granted rights to be permanently on New Avalon, in the future things were going to be very different for both nations.

“An appropriate ransom” Canin said quietly, the reporters continued to ask Victor question after question almost all in regards to the Nova Cat’s new embassy and their freedoms on New Avalon, a new future had dawned from the Crisis they had just averted.

Soon after the end of the press conference Khan Canin Rosse led his troops off New Avalon back to their WarShip and then onto the Nova Cat’s Den completing his round trip from the Clan Homeworlds to the Nova Cats Homeworlds.  For now it was quiet for the Nova Cat Khan but he knew the coming weeks would be interesting for the Nova Cats especially with the other Clans.  A week later the Forty-fourth Nova Cat Cavaliers Cluster commanded by Star Colonel Cassin Drummond arrive on New Avalon taking custody of the firebase on the New Scotland continent granted to them along with the embassy, it is the same firebase used previously by the Nova Cat Watch Cluster previously during their year long liaison to the AFFS.  Because the embassy would need to be built from the foundations up in the City of Dundee Cassin Drummond contacted several local companies to see who would be willing to work with the Clansmen to help construct the facility. None were willing listen to the Nova Cat queries until they mention a willingness to trade Clan-tech and trade goods as payment for the work, they soon find a willing company local to the City of Dundee that help construct the new facility.  Around the area where the embassy would be built local funding seemed to step into overdrive as various companies bought properties intent on gaining a look at the Clansmen.  Knowing that not only companies would be interested in the Nova Cats the DMI and MIIO Intelligence services also bought properties through dummy corporations to keep an eye on future covert operations, while the Nova Cats themselves positioned a detachment of their Watch within the embassy.

Special Operations Command Office
Fox’s Den, Mount Davion Mountain Range
New Avalon, Crucis March, Federated Suns
14th July 3073

Federated Suns’ Prince’s Champion Colonel Ross McKinnon sat at his desk in the Fox’s Den looking through reports on the Fox’s Teeth and other special forces under his command.  The fighting against the Varnay forces before the Nova Cats had arrived had completely gutted the Fox’s Teeth and the other forces.  Ross himself had his left arm in bandages, and hurt all over, from a fall during combat, his wife Rachel had permanently removed herself from the chain of command choosing to retire and look after their son full time.  The company’s full time commander Captain David McKinnon was the only surviving full time member of the Fox’s Teeth and he was fully ready for duty, not sustaining even a scratch during the battle though he accounted for six Mech kills, young Damien Redburn had returned to Albion to finish his studies along with the survivors from the Albion Academy though Ross had earmarked him for duties within the Fox‘s Teeth or Special Operations in the future after his work here and with the Kittery Training Battalion.

Lost in reading reports and filing things within the office Ross did not even notice Field Marshal Bishop Sortek, commander of the Davion Brigade of Guards, enter the room.  His own First Davion Guards RCT had been temporarily taken off the TO&E of the AFFS following the Varnay Crisis and would be for months as they rebuilt and retrained.  Sitting reading the reports Ross heard a small grunt and looked up immediately stood up saluting as he saw the Field Marshal.  “Sorry Sir, I didn’t see you there.”

“That’s quite alright Colonel, you are not the only one licking the wounds of the past conflict.”  He said ruefully, the AFFS would likely take years to rebuild from this conflict ten BattleMech Regiments destroyed, five WarShips lost, one missing and several others heavily damaged, the Varnay family had failed to secure leadership of the Federated Suns but they had their revenge.  “Have you heard the news?”  Sortek asked sitting down opposite Ross, speaking to him as an equal, the position of Prince’s Champion had its benefits Ross quietly thought.

“No, I’ve been too busy shutting down the Special Operations and transferring things over to the DMI.  Its their theatre now.”  Ross said, such was the damage to his command the entire thing had been cashiered by the High Command too much resources were required to rebuild the damaged Davion Guards and replace other lost units.  Even his position as Victor’s Prince’s Champion couldn’t save the unit from the cost of rebuilding.

“Well your command has not been the only one to take a fall.  The Avalon Hussars have been stricken from the rolls permanently.”  Sortek announced he could still barely believe it, the Avalon Hussars had almost to the man sided with the Varnay family.

“What of the Twentieth?”  Ross asked, the unit’s name alone would be enough to get it cashiered and the troops transferred.  So far it had remained on New Avalon, a unit without name just a number.

“They are transforming into the Third New Avalon Guards RCT” Sortek said with a small smile, it made sense it would keep them together as a unit through this difficult time, it would stop further resignations and defections.  The move also added another RCT to the Davion Guards Brigade so of course Sortek would be happy, Ross thought, this lasted a moment as Sortek continued.  “The Three New Avalon Guards units are slated for rebuilding to full strength and then will be separated into their own Brigade under the command of Gates Berman, who’s been raised to full Field Marshal.”  Sortek said raising back to his feet, Ross followed suit a short visit then?  Ross thought.  “I’ve been commanded to come down here by the First Prince, Colonel to do a solemn duty.”  He said “firstly I want to say I’m sorry, it’s not good for you, you’ll be lucky to see the inside of your Mech once a month.”  He said reaching into his pocket.

“Sir?”  Ross asked confused, he’d lost his command but it sounded like Sortek was giving him another one.

“Colonel, the Fox’s Teeth though destroyed have won you a position in the AFFS Regimental Command list.  They are to be fully expanded to a BattleMech Regiment then a full RCT within five years.  And the First Prince wants his Champion to have a unit - Leftenant-General” Sortek said handing him a new set of rank insignia, Ross looked at it a shoulder epaulette with two broad bands and one thin one, the lowest of the general officers.  “The new unit will be set up like the Fox’s Teeth, with highly specialised companies and Battalions, they will rarely be assigned alone to a mission but get all the special operations they could ever want.  The Fox’s Teeth Company have officially been given a transfer from the Crucis Lancers Brigade, the Seventh are not happy, to the New Avalon Guards Brigade.”  Ross was too shocked to say anything other than look at Bishop Sortek wide-eyed “they all feel like that when this happens.”  He said leaving Ross’ office heading down the corridor without another word, Ross still stared at the epaulette without saying a word.

coming up some of the fallout of the last few chapters, hope you enjoy

Federated Suns Border Worlds
Capellan March, Draconis March
3rd August 3073

Following the public announcement of Clan Nova Cat and the Federated Suns diplomatic relations, and the history behind them, both Capellan Confederation and Draconis Combine forces assault the Federated Suns borders intent on punishing the Federated Suns for their choice of allies.

Though the Capellan attacks along the lines of the old Tikonov region and the Chesterton Trade Federation’s claimed space.  Targeting a total of six worlds including Halloran V, Algot, Valexa, New Hessen, Almach and Chesterton itself the Capellan forces are little more than raiding forces and easily repelled by the assembled forces.  As Victor Steiner-Davion had specifically ordered the March Lords to withhold sending forces to New Avalon they were in the perfect position to marshal forces against the Capellans and turn the attacks back rapidly.

The Draconis Combine push to claim one system alone - Proserpina.  Though a near desolate rock the world is still important to the Combine with several factories and served as a Prefecture capital.  The Second Robinson Rangers RCT was based on the world along with the Robinson Training Academy Battalion.  Against them the DCMS placed the First Ghost Regiment, along with the Second and Seventh Arkab Legions.

Though a combat tested RCT the Second Robinson was heavily outgunned and after fourteen days of combat the Second Robinson’s commander Major-General Coran DaMateo called on assistance from the FSS Fleet Admiral Corrine Donnings, the Fox-class Corvette, which had been assigned to support the RCT and if necessary to evacuate them from the planet.  The Corvette’s commander ordered the ship’s capital gunners to lay down orbital covering fire for the Second to evacuate to DropShips while aerospace fighters and conventional gunners to defend against DCMS fighter cover and break the DropShip enforced orbital blockade.  Although the DCMS Admiralty is not happy at the losses incurred to DropShip and fighter forces by AFFS troops, Draconis Combine nobles and military leaders are buoyed by the recapturing of Proserpina counting it as a great victory against the Federated Suns.

Saso City, Mawreddog
Hasek Royal Residence, New Syrtis
Capellan March, Federated Suns
13th August 3073

Although he did not go outside much on New Syrtis, a world stuck in a perpetual winter storm, Baron George Michael Hasek could not help going outside every morning just to feel the New Syrtis wind on his face and the cold in his bones.  “This is why I fight” George said quietly looking around the picturesque beauty of his artic Homeworld.

In the woods at a range of just over two hundred metres was a single Infiltrator Mk II Battle Armour suit, painted in winter camouflage, the suit was totally still as it had been for two days waiting for the right moment.  The trooper was known only as Tamroy, one of the most elite operators the Federated Suns had ever known, Baron George Hasek had ordered him/her to kill the Capellan leadership in a black operation but swift action by several DMI agents on Sian had stopped the agent carrying out what the Federated Suns considered to be an illegal order.

Upon returning to the Federated Suns First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion had personally met with Tamroy and confirmed he did not sanction action against the Capellans instead he had another mission for Tamroy.  Elements of the Hasek family had supported House Varnay the First Capellan Dragoons to New Avalon was full evidence of that, although Victor did not believe they were working with House Liao he knew that only a high placed member of the house could have given such an order.  Morgan Hasek-Davion was busy with the Star League Defence Force and a personal friend of Victor, the First Prince refused to believe that he was responsible despite his connections to the March.  Baron George Michael Hasek however was another story he continually bucked against orders from the First Prince and had almost sparked another Succession War with the orders to kill the Liao family.  The actions of the Varnay Family had proven to Victor that hard decisions had to be made to keep his nation and family strong.  Tamroy an agent used by the Baron for his own devices was Victor’s perfect tool, which had led to him/her standing here now.

Waiting was key for the perfect shot, in remaining in the same position on a snow covered world like New Syrtis the snow had built up around the suit providing a near perfect natural camoflague, the internal power of the Infiltrator II had kept Tamroy warm while the snow had shielded the suit from the wind of New Syrtis.  With Baron Hasek in the rifle’s sights Tamroy did what they always did and without hesitation took the shot, a single nearly silent snap of a firing Magshot Gauss Rifle passed quickly nearly hidden by the wind.  Heartbeats later the slug impacted Baron George Michael Hasek’s neck, the slug capable of damaging Mech armour tore through the Baron’s body and he was dead nearly instantly.

Within moments several Cavalier Battle Armour equipped bodyguards moved to help the Baron but he was long dead by the time they got to him.  Tamroy waited until the Cavaliers were all in the open, making sure there were no others watching for movement, then began moving away heading into the snow capped mountain ranges of New Syrtis.

An hour later in the New Syrtis mountains moving to their pick-up point Tamroy encountered something very unexpected a green painted Timber Wolf, seventy-five ton Clan OmniMech, decorated with C-Bills.  This Mech and its paint scheme were legendary around the Inner Sphere and beyond, the MechWarrior was known as the Bounty Hunter, an assassin for hire and even better at their job than Tamroy was.  Their identity was a closely guarded secret, their financial backing was a mystery, their kill rate was nearly one hundred percent.

One contract that had affected that record was a Capellan one.  That contract was to kill Tamroy.  The Capellans had no patience to wait, while the DMI had recalled Tamroy before the Bounty Hunter could act.  A Battle Armour suit had no chance against a heavy OmniMech, even an elite trooper like Tamroy knew they were done for.  Using the Infiltrator Mk II’s jump jets Tamroy tried to escape firing several Magshot Gauss Rifle shots into the Timber Wolf but the Bounty Hunter’s deadly aim and the accuracy of the Timber Wolf’s pulse lasers swatted the battle armour suit from the air.  With one shot the suit’s jump jets, electronic camouflage systems and motive systems were gone, the suit smashed into the ground disabled and Tamroy was totally vulnerable.

Moving the OmniMech to stand-by mode the Bounty Hunter dropped to the ground wearing a fully encased coolant suit, moving over they finished off Tamroy quickly not making another warrior suffer but doing the duty they needed to do.

A week later the helmet of an Infiltrator Mk II Battle Armour suit and the dead agent’s head are found on Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao’s throne in the Forbidden Palace on Sian.  The Capellan Confederation immediately paid double the previous bounty for Tamroy to the Bounty Hunter for completion of the contract.  The Chancellor also ordered six of the palace guards executed for allowing the Bounty Hunter to get as far as the throne room, even if it would have meant their deaths to interfere.

Rudolpho
Outworlds Alliance
20th August 3073

In a quiet system of the Outworlds Alliance, near the capital Clan Snow Raven was setting up an enclave on the quiet agricultural planet of Rudolpho with the WarShips Storm Crow, a Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Cruiser, command ship of the Storm Crow Naval Star and the Snowflake, a Potemkin-class Troop Cruiser, of the Brim Naval Star in orbit brining supplies and giving general protection.

Though there were light Snow Raven and Outworlds Alliance fighter patrols in the area there was no major presence other than the two idle WarShips.  This light presence from the Snow Ravens would be their downfall as three Star Adder WarShips jumped into the system on the 20th.  The Snow Raven WarShips were accompanied by enough JumpShips and DropShips to transport and entire Galaxy.

In orbit the Storm Crow and Snowflake stood against the Nygaard, a Sovetskii-Soyuz-class Heavy Cruiser, supported by the Exodus Sentinel and the Exodus Crusader, both York-class Destroyer Carriers.  Unfortunately for the Snow Ravens the Snowflake’s DropShips were all planet side, all were civilian cargo haulers, so they would be no help in this fight.

Between them the Snow Raven crews divided up the three enemy craft, the Storm Crow would battle it’s fellow Sovetskii Soyuz, the Nygaard, while the massive Snowflake would engage the two York-class vessels.  Moving out they engaged the Star Adders just outside the orbit of the second planet in the system.  With the Storm Crow landing several capital missile strikes on the Nygaard and the Snow Flake gutting three DropShips from the Exodus Sentinel in the first barrage.

The battle continued for sixteen hours as the Star Adder’s expanded Omicron Provisional Galaxy slipped by and assaulted the light Snow Raven defences on Rudolpho.  Though the Snowflake’s gunners were able to destroy all the DropShips and the WarShip Exodus Sentinel the odds were too heavily stacked against them and following a fighter attack the Potemkin-class Troop Cruiser’s fuel tanks ruptured engulfing the craft in an ever expanding fireball.

Driven on by the destruction of one Snow Raven WarShip the remaining Star Adders launched a full strike on the Storm Crow destroying the Heavy Cruiser in less than one hour, it’s lack of fighter protection and armour proving telling points for the command vessel of the Storm Crow Star.

On the ground the Star Adders six cluster overwhelmed the Snow Raven defences capturing over five thousand lowerclassmen and the native population just following the destruction of the WarShip assets.

Crimson Medical Facility
Crimson, Canopus
Magistracy Commonality, Capellan Confederation
31st August 3073

During a rare visit to Canopus Magestix Naomi Centrella-Liao, Duchess of Canopus, co-leader of the merged Magistracy of Canopus and Capellan Confederation and wife to Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao, gives birth to the couple’s second child Isla Centrella-Liao.

Quietly on Canopus and throughout the Commonality there is a celebration at the birth not only was the child born in the former-Magistracy of Canopus but it was a female child, which has always been preferred to males in the former Magistracy.  The Canopian’s have something to connect themselves to with the new line of Centrella-Liao children and a future leader.

Many within the former national capital and royal circles plan to promote Isla’s claim to being Duchess of Canopus when her mother passes, blocking Dao-Shen Liao, the couple’s first child to the position of Duke leading to many to question how accepting many Canopians are of the joining of the Capellan and Canopian nations.  For now however Naomi is overjoyed to have a second child, as is Sun-Tzu Liao, his line is secure when he dies one of his children will become Chancellor of the most powerful Capellan nation there has ever been.

HPG Sites
Across Federated Suns
8th September 3073

After months of planning, delayed by the Varnay Crisis, and in a series of lightning raids the Federated Suns DMI units storm all Alpha Hyper Pulse Generator Sites run by the Department of Communications, though the Star League/ComStar personnel do not resist the Star League council does quietly question the Federated Suns’ actions on higher levels.  The Federated Suns High Command informs the Advisory Council on Defiance that NAIS can take care of the operations of all Federated Suns HPGs without help from the SLDF or anyone else.  The Star League is ordered to vacate the class-B grid or face the same actions by more SLDF forces.

Within hours NAIS experts arrived at several primary HPG sites taking up operational matters, for years they had studied a half dismantled HPG at NAIS and contact with Clan Nova Cat had added to their understanding of the technology.  Although construction of replacement sites lost in combat would be difficult for the Federated Suns to do alone this was not seen as a great difficulty as HPGs were not generally considered a target in general Inner Sphere combat.  By the end of the week all of the class-A grid was in NAIS/Nova Cat hands with no drop in efficiency.  It would take until the end of September before the Class-B grid was also fully operational, during this time there was grumblings from some corners of the Federated Suns as communications were difficult however Black Box communications kept units upto date with changes in orders.

On Terra the Department of Communications contacted the Star League’s Intelligence Command instructing them to find out how the Federated Suns had taken over their HPG Grid so easily and why?

For their troubles in assisting with the Federated Suns take over the Nova Cats are supplied with raw materials and military technology such as rotary autocannons, autocannon special munitions and screen launcher technology.  Though the Nova Cats do not incorporate any of this technology into their military forces they do begin to break down the technologies and share them with the other Clans in an effort to replicate them for Clan technology.

The Federated Suns create their own Department of Communications under Director Julie Forman who reports directly to the First Prince as part of the weekly updates on any issues with the Communication’s grid.

Hasek family Memorial Garden
New Syrtis, Capellan March

12th September 3073

In front of a gathering of all the nobles and high ranking Commanding-General Duke Morgan Hasek-Davion stepped up onto a small podium in the Hasek family Memorial Garden, it saddened him that no members of the Sandoval Family of the Federated Suns’ Draconis March or any members of the First Prince’s family had attended.  He knew that Victor did not hold his son in high regard but still, it was a shame on the Hasek family that Victor had not come.

“It is a solemn duty when a father has to bury his son” Morgan began, he and George had never been close but still family was family.  “I and my son were not close, duty took us apart, however we both understood each other and wanted the best for our people here and in the wider Capellan March.  Against foes foreign and domestic he strove to better the lives of all citizens of the Federated Suns.”  He took a deep breath, though George’s time as leader of the Capellan March had not been as torments as others through the ages he had done great things.  “Under the rule of Baron George Hasek the Capellan March saw the rebirth of the Star League based within its borders, he led led the Federated Suns into the remains of the Sarna March where unrest and chaos created by others had caused so much pain and suffering.  He repulsed attacks on the Pleiades Cluster and defended against an unwarranted attack on this system’s shipyards, he also saw Ares taken from our longest enemy.”  Morgan noticed the Capellan Confederation representatives look uneasy at the remembrance of that fact, though the Capellans had taken Tikonov in the exchange and eventually retaken the world it was still a major feat for the Federated Suns to have accomplished.  Although credit was probably due more to Reinhart Steiner than George, the Baron had been the March’s leader and could claim some credit.

“All the peoples of the Capellan March have been secure under George Hasek they have known that he has their best interests at heart, and though I will not be returning to command the Capellan March.”  He noticed several surprised looks “the March will be in the capable hands of Field Marshal Nathaniel Hasek until George’s daughter Kim is ready to take her rightful place as Baroness and if she chooses, Field Marshal, of the region.”  He said looking over at George’s six year old standing by her mother head lowered. “I will remain on New Syrtis for the time being, until the line of command is complete, before travelling onto Defiance for the final events of the Third Martial Olympiad.”  He said stepping down from the podium moving away, once out of earshot of the crowd of mourners he turned to Nathaniel who was near by “I want to see everything you have on my son’s death.”

“Yes, sire” Nathaniel said looking to his uncle, he knew when not to mess with the Duke of New Syrtis, Morgan wanted to know what was going on and wouldn’t be stopped for anything.  From

Following the unrest on New Avalon and the Federated Suns opening diplomatic relations with Clan Nova Cat the worlds of Broken Wheel, Wetumpka, Morven and Memphis all break away from the Federated Suns to join the Filtvelt Coalition.  Although First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion contacts the leaders of each of these worlds personally to voice his disapproval of this move the AFFS is not involved militarily instead they withdraw all assets owned by the nation from each worlds defences leaving them with the barest protection.

On Broken Wheel the Broken Wheel Training Battalion and Militia refuse to remain on the world with while they do not serve the AFFS, the units have more loyalty to their home nation and the AFFS than the newly formed Filtvelt Coalition or their homeworld.

Third Martial Olympiad Final Competition
Defiance, Crucis March
Federated Suns
4th October 3073

The crowd was hushed as Loremaster Brian Pryde walked forward from the Jade Falcons, he was a virtual unknown before the competition a ristar in the Falcons but little else.   During this entire Martial Olympiad the Clans in general had been on top, showing off their skill in piloting, gunnery and teamwork, the Jade Falcons especially had proved they were the best.

Not only were the Jade Falcons led by someone new they also had a lot of new designs on show including Brian Pryde’s ride a brand-new Jupiter Assault BattleMech, a new ferocious standard BattleMech design with extreme amounts of range and firepower capable of destroying any type of target.

The Jade Falcon warrior walked up onto the podium to accept his award for defeating Clan Wolf in the final competition and for winning the competition overall from Commanding-General Morgan Hasek-Davion, as he climbed the steps he smiled, the spheroid commander of the Second Star League would be giving him the award a trueborn Clansmen who had defeated all comers.  The sham Star League proving that despite being created to contain the Clans they could not stop their advancement, not had the Clans time in the Inner Sphere dulled their skills.

“Combatants and Spectators, although this years competition has been marred by the trouble here in the Federated Suns, I am proud to present you with the leader of the victorious faction Loremaster Brian Pryde of Clan Jade Falcon!” Morgan Hasek-Davion called out trying to smile, it made him sick to have to award a Clan the award, it had taken only three competitions for the Clans to show their dominance and the Inner Sphere was sorely lacking behind them in so many ways.  He turned and handed the trophy a golden Orion BattleMech, the same used by Aleksandr Kerensky when he was Commanding-General of the first Star League Defence Force, set above a wooden stand.  The Jade Falcon warrior took the trophy inspecting it before turning to the crowd.

“I accept this trophy for what it really stands for, Clan superiority and the success of our breeding.  This was but a game, the next time you see us if will not be the case.”  He said and with that stepping down from the podium, returning to his victorious Clan-kin, the Jade Falcons rained supreme.

With the end of the Jade Falcon’s speech Morgan Hasek-Davion moved back to the podium “And with this Martial Olympiad we had a new competition to show the skill and pride of a new form of competition, the power of the WarShip.”  The Commanding-General said “so this year perhaps it is right that the group that have used WarShips most effectively for centuries has been victorious, please allow me to hand the victory to Clan Snow Raven and the crew of the Lord Death.”  He said with that Star Commodore Brent Crow, commander of the Aegis-class Heavy Cruiser, that had won the battle stood up and moved towards the podium to collect their prize a plaque inscribed with the Lord Death’s victory, the Lord Death’s crew would also be allowed for a heraldic pattern to be painted on the bow of the WarShip, assuming the Khan of Clan Snow Raven agreed, it had been a tradition of the original Star League but the Clans had not joined the Star League.  As he collected his prize Brent Crow smiled but said nothing, it was especially good for him as the Lord Death was originally a Star League vessel before it became a Snow Raven vessel.  It was more than fitting for a previous SLDF vessel to gain another award.

From behind the podium Governor of Terra Gavin Dow stepped forward towards the podium, “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Star League Defence Force has chosen to follow the same path as ComStar before it.  We will strive to provide each of the Succession Lords with a pair of Artemis-class Diplomatic Escort Vessels, assuming there are no major conflicts of the Inner Sphere.”  He said with a brief smile “in keeping with this plan today the Sandhurst passes into the hand of the Federated Suns Admiralty and soon the Berlin will pass into the hands of the Lyran Alliance.  We will continue to produce these vessels in the Terra system until all the Inner Sphere has craft to bring peace.”  There was a roar around the chamber at the Star League’s move.

“And so brings the end of the Third Martial Olympiad, please have a safe journey to your home systems, once you leave this place to where every they may be.” Morgan Hasek-Davion said stepping forward once more, for three years they would have to wait until they could prove themselves once more.

Vehicle Proving Grounds
New Haiti, Nova Cat’s Den
8th October 3073

Although all eyes of the Clans and the Inner Sphere have been on the drama and excitement of the Martial Olympiad Clan Nova Cat also had eyes on New Haiti as another fruit of their vehicle development program came into being.  The Predator Attack VTOL Craft.  Weighing in at thirty tons the craft is capable of speeds reaching almost two hundred kilometres per hour the craft is designed to hunt and kill infantry, battle armour and vehicles as well as threaten light vehicles.  Armed with an array of six machine guns of various calibre mounted in stubby wings forward, these are supported by a pair of Extended-Range Medium Lasers for anti-armour support and a ventral mounted three-tube Advanced Tactical Missile Launcher with plenty ammo.

Eager to prove the worthiness of this design the Nova Cat scientists in charge of the development prove the VTOL’s worth by using the two prototypes to destroy several captured pirate armoured vehicles and VTOLs in rapid succession.  Impressed with the craft’s performance they are immediately added to the Nova Cat Touman with old Donar Attack Helicopters retired from service or traded to other nearby powers.

Several Predators are added to Tau Galaxies TO&E in the next few days.  Throughout the Nova Cat’s Den Nova Cat Galaxies begin to request rights to send troops to New Haiti and challenge Tau Galaxy for its right to garrison New Haiti.  The Nova Cat Touman has been at peace too long, they are beginning to itch for a fight.

Davion Royal Palace
Avalon Island, Albion, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
16th October 3073

Rarely did First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion stand on ceremony and sit in state on the Davion throne wearing the full uniform of the leader of the Federated Suns however this was one such occasion.  Today would mark a very special moment in his term as First Prince and a warning call to all the other Succession Lords.  Standing in front of Victor was General Maeve Wolf, commander of the Wolf’s Dragoons Mercenary Brigade, Victor had seen tapes of Colonels Jamie Wolf and his brother Joshua when they had first presented the Wolf’s Dragoons to his father Hanse Davion sixty-eight years before.

Back then the Dragoons had been a unit that had appeared from nowhere with four reinforced regiments of troops ready to fight for the Federated Suns, no-one had known who they were and what their arrival meant for the Inner Sphere, they were the Vanguard of the Clans a menace that changed the face of the Inner Sphere.

Today was different however, they knew exactly what the Wolf’s Dragoons were, the best equipped and most elite mercenary force in the Inner Sphere although recently they had struggled more than they had since the end of the Fourth Succession War.  With mercenary trade almost completely dried up on their homeworld Outreach, mainly because of the Dragoons own actions the Dragoons had been forced to look at other avenues for cash today Victor knew exactly why Maeve was here. “First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion, leader of the Federated Suns, I General Maeve Wolf, commander of the Wolf’s Dragoons Mercenary Brigade, bring Alpha and Beta Regiments of the brigade supported by Zeta and Wolf Spider Battalions and by the WarShip Alexander to serve as our contract was agreed.  We are at your order.”  She said in a very formal voice, everything was to be done in a ritualised way the DMI and MIIO had holo-cameras all around the room recording everything that was happening.  Soon these pictures would be beamed all across the Inner Sphere, everyone would know that the Federated Suns and Wolf’s Dragoons were together once more.

“General Maeve Wolf, I accept your Wolf’s Dragoons into the service of the Federated Suns for five years.  May your time here bring you honour and victory” he said completing his half of the ceremony.

“Honour and Victory” Maeve barked snapping to a salute, Victor in turn raised to his feet and returned the salute.  Maeve lowered her salute bowed slightly and left the room, Victor in turn held the salute until Maeve has left the room before sitting back down on the thrown a small grin on his face.  The Dragoons were within his service for five years, five years the entire Inner Sphere would cringe at the thought of the Dragoons and Federated Suns together.

For their first duty however the Dragoons would be less that thrilled they were tasked with training and cadre duty on New Avalon with the four rebuilding New Avalon Guards RCTs, in the long term this would help them fit in with the Federated Suns troops and meld them together to form a cohesive unit it would save lives and make for easier battles despite it being a little tedious.

Deployment
Spaceport, Tara
Northwind, Star League Protectorate
22nd October 3073

Although Northwind was now part of the Star League Protectorate like Outreach the Northwind Highlanders, like the Wolf’s Dragoons, were still mercenaries and still bound to honour contracts, pay bills and live from day to day in the war torn Inner Sphere.  At the spaceport at the capital city Tara Lieutenant-Colonel Jeremiah Rose watched as the last of his Renegades mounted up into the lead Fortress-class DropShip his own Warhawk Assault OmniMech had been loaded over an hour before.  Beside him Colonel Edward Stenn commander of the First Kearny Highlanders Regiment, the senior Colonel of the Highlanders and leader of the First for many years.  He was nearing retirement and was unlikely to be deployed off Northwind again “How do ya feel Colonel?  Yer first time out as a Northwind Regimental Commander.”  He asked looking over at Jeremiah.

“I’ve commanded men before, sir” Jeremiah said, he’d commanded men in probably heavier combat than anyone on Northwind during the Battle of Tukayyid as a member of ComStar.  Perhaps it was not a unit of the scale of the Renegades but still it was a tough fight.  “Though I know that now I am representing Northwind as well as my unit, it’s a whole new responsibility.”  He said believing it was what the Colonel wanted to hear.

“May I make a suggestion to ya Colonel?”  Stenn asked, seeing Jeremiah’s worry.

   “Please sir”

“Forget aboot Northwind and aboot the Highlanders reputation” Stenn said looking the Lieutenant-Colonel right in the eye “A’ve seen yer battle record an’ I know you’ll do us proud.  Just keep doing what your Black Thorns did an’ we won’t have a problem.”  He said extending his hand which Jeremiah shook “good luck, and knock those Clanners dead.”

“Gladly sir” Jeremiah said before breaking the handshake saluting and turning to leave, the Northwind Renegades were ready to leave.  Moving down the ramp Jeremiah stepped into a small cart that drove him into the Fortress’ main bay.  Five minutes later the mighty DropShip’s main engines ignited and the vessel rose into the sky, moments later five more DropShips rose into the sky behind the Fortress heading to rendezvous with a JumpShip charging its interstellar drive near Northwind’s star.  Their mission was simple a year long garrison/training/raiding in the Lyran Alliance fighting on the Clan Jade Falcon border.

First Prince’s Office
FSS New Avalon (Whirlwind II-class Destroyer)
Tikonov, Capellan March, Federated Suns
4th November 3073

The time of the next Whitting Conference was almost upon the leaders of the Inner Sphere once more First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion was travelling away from home for the Star League but this time it wasn’t so far.  This year the Star League Advisory Council and the current First Lord, his younger brother Archon Peter Steiner-Davion, had chosen to reopen Unity City closed for the centuries since the fall of the First Star League.  Meaning the leaders of the Inner Sphere would have less of a distance to travel for future conferences.

First priorities came first however as the internal Federated Suns trouble came first.  In front of him was Field Marshal Carver Felsner commander of the Department of Military Intelligence Division of the AFFS “Field Marshal, have we had any successes with these Spartans?”  Victor asked, as far as he knew they had nothing but it was always good to check.

“Negative sire, we have no more information on the SPT-NX Spartan other than some basic combat characteristics and that in every combat situation they have been encountered in we believe they are the same unit.  And that they have not been defeated.”

“Understood, how would you like to get your hands on one of these Mechs maybe the pilot too?”  Victor asked looking up at him from his desk, the Field Marshal smiled broadly.  “Then I have a job for your people first.”

“We are always ready to serve, sire.”

“Good, I need your people to contact the Bounty Hunter and his people.  I know the DMI maintains links to his network.”

“The Bounty Hunter?  Sire, my people can hunt down these BattleMechs all we need is a location.  Also the last we checked the Bounty Hunter is under the contract of the Capellans or the Free Worlds League.”

“I agree, Field Marshal, and I have every confidence in your people that if necessary your people could disable and capture the entire company if you needed to.  However, these people most likely originate out with Federated Suns borders in fact I am convinced they do.”  He noticed the Field Marshal was about to speak again but he cut him off “and yes I know the DMI have conducted operations out with the Federated Suns before and will continue to do so if it is required.”  He said the Field Marshal nodded “however if these people resisted and if you were forced to fight in the open then we cannot afford Federated Suns personnel, even secret operatives, to be caught fighting in another state.  The Bounty Hunter affords secrecy and doesn’t care about borders or laws.”  The Field Marshal understood there were political considerations to be looked at before operations began.

“We will contact them in the next few days.”

“Thank you Field Marshal, ensure the Bounty Hunter receives their usual accommodation.”  Victor said Felsner nodded and saluted his First Prince, Victor returned the salute.  Twenty minutes later a Vampire Special Operations DropShip released from docking ports on the side of the destroyer, the DropShip was one of the smallest ever built massing in at four hundred tons, it had fallen out of use over the centuries and only recently returned to service with the AFFS as a special operations vessel held under DMI supervision.

Star League Conference Centre
Unity City, North-West America
Terra, Star League Protectorate
12th November 3073

Situated on the west of North America in what used to be the old-United States of America’s Washington State the Unity City, or the Court of the Star League, had been the jewel of the Terran Hegemony and of the Star League.  Unfortunately it also made the city a major target for aggression and a good example for those wanting to hurt the spoilt people of Terra.

When Stefan Amaris had launched his Coup de’tat against the Cameron Family seizing control of Terra he had first used a nuclear weapon to destroy the Royal Black Watch Regiment to the North West Salt Plains the explosion had blackened the north and west of the city killing millions.  At almost the same time Fort Baker and Fort Cameron, known as the Citidel, had also been hit with nuclear weapons. Following this half the city had been flooded by mud-slides following torrential rain.

With Stefan Amaris unwilling to do anything hundreds of thousands had died through starvation and disease as the conditions in the city grew worse and worse.  During the occupation by Amaris forces more damage was done to the city as the Rim Worlds Republic forces had hunted down Cameron loyalists tearing down entire city blocks to kill the insurgents.

The Liberation of Terra brought peace to the planet but at a heavy cost, the Star League troops liberating the world had been forced to engage Rim Worlds Republic forces inside the cities of Terra literally fighting building-to-building, block-to-block, causing yet more damage.  The final push from the Liberation Forces led by Commanding-General Aleksandr Kerensky had caused yet more damage as Amaris loyal forces didn’t care what they targeted trying to cause as much destruction and chaos as possible.

Following the fall of Amaris and the disillusion of the Star League Council there had been a mass exodus from the city as civilians no longer wanted to live in a city that was full of death and destruction.  Looters had taken over the city searching out any riches as the SLDF pulled out, when Director of the Department of Communications Jerome Blake had taken over Terra following the Exodus he had used the forces available to him to hunt down the looters and seal the City for all time.  Preserving what remained as a reminder of the Coup and the fall of Humanities Golden Age, few people on Terra even cared about the city and it had slowly become heavily overgrown as the area was overtaken by nature.

With the reestablishment of the Star League the Advisory Council had chosen to reopen the city as soon as Terra had joined the Star League Protectorate.  The first thing that had been decided was it would be an Inner Sphere wide operation.  Legions of IndustrialMechs and support vehicles manufactured from across the Inner Sphere and companies from every corner of the Inner Sphere were hired and moved to Terra under Star League Defence Force employ.  The influx of visiting workers had improved Terra’s economy as well as moved forward Star League goals which helped a world still recovering from the wounds of the Word of Blake and ComStar’s battle for control.

It had taken nearly a year but the Whitting Conference Centre, on a scale worthy of Unity City, had been built and was ready for the Star League Conference - two weeks before the Succession Lords had arrived.  The Conference Centre was fully tested and ready for the beginning of the Whitting Conference with Archon Peter Steiner-Davion stepping up to the podium to open the Conference as the standing First Lord.

“My fellow Lords welcome to Terra” Peter started looking around the table he could see his Brother Victor, leader of the Federated Suns, Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao, leader of the Capellan Confederation, Prime Minister Kai Allard-Liao of the St Ives Compact, Warlord Minoru Kurita, leader of the Draconis Combine the council of the Star League.  Beside him sat Commanding-General Morgan Hasek-Davion, the oldest man in the room he was from their parent’s generation but he easily kept pace with them all and knew how to keep every single one of them, including Sun-Tzu Liao, in check.  When Peter had first seen him on Terra he’d noticed that the recent death of his son George had aged the Commanding-General many years, he looked weary tired of the politics and war, despite this he still had a commanding presence over the Council and would have the final say if things got out of hand.

“It has been many years since the leaders of the Succession Lords were here on Terra” Peter continued, everyone knew of that event when while marrying Melissa Steiner, heir to the thrown of the Lyran Commonwealth, Hanse Davion, leader of the Federated Suns, had started the Fourth Succession war.  Peter’s parents wedding forty-eight years ago, before any of the ruling Succession Lords were alive “it was before the Clan Invasion before the Second Star League then was a dream even though not it is two decades old.  All because of the efforts of the people in this room for it to work and to be a power for all of the Inner Sphere, as it once was.”

“Terra has changed, we have changed, but the Inner Sphere remains the same, the threats against us remain, and now threats will no doubt rear their heads in time.”  He said looking to each of them, he wasn’t a doomsdayist, he was a realist and he wanted the others to be just as grounded. “The Star League was originally conceived as a golden age of mankind, not just a military force to support the Succession Lords wars.”  He noticed that Sun-Tzu Liao was yawning as if to show that he did not care for what happened, as far as he was concerned it was his vote to lose.

“Remember what this organisation means and continue the work that has been started before you, the Star League University on Thorin, the Renovation and Rebuilding of this City, the Martial Olympiad, the continued expansion of the League and the notion of bringing peace to the Inner Sphere, thank you.”  He said finishing, hopefully he’d gotten through to them, he noticed approving nods from both his brother and Morgan, he’d done the best he could for the Star League.  There was nothing else anyone could ask of him.

“I’d like to call for a vote on the New First Lord Immediately, the sooner we can be done with this the sooner we can go home.”  Sun-Tzu said completely breaking protocol, Peter rose from his chair to answer Sun-Tzu.

“Chancellor, first there are affairs of the Star League to be undertaken, you will wait until it is time for the vote.”  Peter said looking round the other Succession Lords “if there is nothing else then we will adjourn this meeting until this afternoon.

Star League Conference Centre
Unity City, North-West America
Terra, Star League Protectorate
13th November 3073

Through the course of the day and into the next the decision was made between the Succession Lords that the High Command facility would move from its position on Kittery to Sandhurst, England in the British Isles.  Unlike the original Star League which had been commanded from the massive Citidel complex outside Unity City they decided that the two would be in separate locations.  Sandhurst had always been a massive military training complex in the history of the British Isles and that had continued into the Star League and during ComStar’s time on Terra.  The Word of Blake had begun massive fortification and upgrading of Sandhurst which the Star League had quietly continued, it would be a grand command complex when completed more than capable of controlling the Star League Defence Force’s movements anywhere in the Inner Sphere.  The facilities on Kittery would remain as an SLDF training world under Federated Suns stewardship however the real power of the Star League would be on Terra where it belonged.

The next day bigger decisions were made.  Firstly it was decided that the Taurian Concordat’s suspended vote was to be overruled with the nation receiving their full vote back.  The Taurian Concordat leaders Protector Brenda Calderon and Baron Cham Kithrong agree to sign the Ares Convention for the first time in the Taurian Concordat’s history, taking a major step for the Concordat towards peace and towards acceptance by the other States of the Inner Sphere and Periphery.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, like yesterday today we have seen great steps towards strengthening the Star League Defence Force” Governor of Terra Gavin Dow said addressing the Succession Lords, considering how Chancellor Liao had reacted to a delayed vote for the new First Lord the choice had been made to have Gavin lead the second day’s meetings and hopefully steer things away from the First Lord’s position.  “And today we take another step forward for the Star League Protectorate and the Star League Defence Force.”  He said “today I would like to propose the growing Star League Protectorate to be given a voice at this Council.”  He said looking round the tables there were a couple of scoffs at the very idea of power to a Protectorate but there was also a couple of nods.  “With Terra, Northwind, Outreach and most worlds of the former Chaos March part of the Star League Protectorate I believe it is time that these worlds gained a voice at this council.”

“Just to give yourself a little more power eh Gavin?” Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao said very informally forgetting rank or status, as Governor of Terra Gavin Dow hadn’t expected such a cavalier attitude towards his position.

“I rule Terra only through democratic vote from the citizens of this world.  I represent the people of the Protectorate through my position of Terra, however if they chose any world’s representative could lead the Protectorate.  If you think this is my power ploy Chancellor then I’d expect your vote will be correspondingly fit this belief.”  He said “I do however ask for such a vote?”

“Well I will play this little game with you Governor.  The Capellan Confederation vote no, there is no need for a new Terran Hegemony.”  Sun-Tzu said harking back to the nation at the centre of the first Star League, an obvious but likely effective scare tactic.  The Terran Hegemony had been the elitist nation of the first Star League with its people gaining the benefits of their position before everyone else, when the Succession Wars had begun following the fall of the first Star League the nations surrounding them had torn into the pampered worlds of the Hegemony causing misery for its people and devastation in its wake.  Many former Hegemony worlds had been utterly destroyed or made uninhabitable as their populations stubbornly refused to bow down to the Succession States, or were caught in the crossfire between states.

“What the Capellan Chancellor does not see is that this will not be a new Terran Hegemony” the Prime Minister of the St Ives Compact Duke Kai Allard-Liao said, Sun-Tzu looked more than a little upset that Kai, the leader of a break away Capellan State, had been the first to speak up after him. “There are no Cameron’s to run this Star League and to have their citizens higher than the rest, the Star League Protectorate only wants a voice at this council instead of being in what is effectively a military dictatorship.  The St Ives Compact votes yes” Kai said nodding in Gavin’s direction, another small state would hopefully bring slightly more balance to the council vote.

“The Lyran Alliance will also vote yes” Archon Peter Steiner-Davion said standing up briefly he did not elaborate on his answer and sat down again.

“The Federated Suns will not be involved in deciding the fate of another nation, at least not at this table.”  First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion said with a small smile before sitting back down, the Federated Suns was a militaristic nation, if he showed he was supporting a democratic nation then his rule over the Federated Suns may be under threat, given recent difficulties it was one area he would gladly avoid.

“The Draconis Combine will reject this proposal, there is no need for another break-away state to gain power, there are enough faces at this council.”  Warlord Minoru Kurita said the Draconis Combine had plenty of experience with break-away states in that of the now-defunct Free Rasalhague Republic, there was no way they would support such a move by the Protectorate, Gavin had expected such a response.  This only left the Taurian Concordat, only just regained its voting rights.

“The Taurian Concordat and its people with vote yes, all voices of the Sphere and Periphery deserve a voice at this council.  We are glad to welcome you into the Star League, may your time in this body be prosperous for your people and our own.”  Protector Brenda Calderon said very eloquently closing the voting, the Star League Protectorate officially was a voting member of the council with a one vote majority.

“I now call for a temporary recess until this afternoon’s council meetings.”  Commanding-General Morgan Hasek-Davion said standing at his SLDF representative table and now unofficially the only member of the council with no vote.  Morgan’s position would still carry a veto on many matters and count as a tie-breaker in event of an equal vote however now all the others had equal power.

Airborne tour over New York City
North American Continent, Terra
Star League Protectorate
13th November 3073

During the fighting between the Word of Blake, ComStar, the Allied Mercenary Command and the SLDF New York City had been badly damaged by conventional and nuclear weapons.  The massive city spread far and wide now covering more than half of the North American Eastern seaboard however it was largely a ghost town at the moment as survivors struggled to salvage what they could and begin to rebuild.  Star League constructions teams continued to try and clear flooding from large parts of the city much of which was toxic and even radioactive.  It would be years until the city was back on its feet however the damage done had become something of a tourist attraction as people wanted to see how much damage had been done by such a brutal and recent conflict.

This particular tour was a very special one Danai Centrella-Davion and her six-year old son Burton were members of the group observing the ruins and remains of Manhattan Island which had partially sunk during the attack.  Looking out the windows they could see that the entire island was flooded, cracked and broken the result of the Word of Blake’s liberal use of Weapons of Mass Destruction in an effort to destroy what they could not have, the ultimate in literally “scorched earth" tactics.  Suddenly Danai felt a cold chill run down her spine almost like she was being watched teams try to clear flooding down below, turning away she saw her younger sister Naomi Centrella-Liao standing less than a foot away with her three-year old son Dao-Shen Liao standing beside her, Danai could see the Chinese-features in him the legacy of the boys father Sun-Tzu Liao.  However it was her younger sister she was caught by, it had been so long “Naomi, it is good to see you”

“That would be ‘Magestix’ wouldn’t it Duchess?”  She hissed sure enough Danai could see she wore the crown of the Magestix, although the Magistracy of Canopus was no-longer a separate nation the her husband had allowed Naomi to keep the title of Magestix, no doubt because Danai still laid claim to the title of Duchess of Canopus.

“Of course, Magestix, my apologies” Danai said bowing her head slightly she’d play her sister’s game for now.  “How are you? Naomi”

“I’m happy, big sister, enjoying my position and my families position.  And you still enjoying your exile?”  She asked rubbing in the fact that Danai had not seen her homeworld since long before the beginning of the Clan Wars, nearly twenty years before.

“I am happy with my choice and with my family” she said coldly, Naomi had changed since they were last together.

While the two sisters had an uncomfortable reunion on a smaller level Burton and Dao-Shen were also having a less than comfortable meeting, although they were technically cousins by the blood of their mothers neither was happy to see the other.  The Capellan child though smaller than his Davion cousin was not intimidated he walked over to Burton looking up at him “my father will destroy your father” Dao-Shen said quietly.

“More like my father will do what my grand-father did and cut your nation in half in one war.  Or maybe he’ll leave it to me.”  Burton Davion said smirking as he reminded Dao-Shen of what Hanse Davion had done to the Capellan Confederation during the Fourth Succession War.  And what the larger nation was capable of in the future.

“We shall see, perhaps it will be my turn” Dao-Shen said turning away, walking with Naomi without saying another word.  Burton looked up to see his mother watching her sister walk away a small tear running down her cheek.

“Not how we planned, mother?”  He whispered

“No son, but expected.”  She whispered back turning round looking at the ruined island again, just like her family she thought, all because of the choices they had made it would have broken their mother‘s heart but there was nothing Danai could do about it.

I couldn't help this scene, it had to be included, hope you enjoy

Star League Conference Centre
Unity City, North-West America
Terra, Star League Protectorate
13th November 3073

That afternoon’s conference session began with the acceptance of the Duchy of Tamarind-Abby being accepted into the Star League Council.  The event passed by a simple vote should really, in hindsight, been passed with greater ceremony as it is the first former Free Worlds League state to be accepted into the Star League.  So far the nation had kept clear of the inter-fighting that continued between the other FWL states led by Captain-General Jeremy Brett and Duchess Therese Marik it was seen as the most stable FWL nation and best hope for reforming the League.  The Duchy, like other new states, would not have a vote on the council for the first three years until Star League Intelligence Corps personnel check out their accounts and dealings.

The Council then moved onto the matter of voting the next First Lord, the person who would lead the Star League for the next three years.  To start the voting Victor Steiner-Davion stood up at his table representing the Federated Suns “It is time that the smaller nations of this Council were represented - I would like to nominate Prime Minister Kai Allard-Liao, Duke of St Ives, to be leader of the Star League Council.”

“Duke Allard-Liao” Governor Gavin Dow said addressing the St Ives leader “do you accept this nomination?”  Despite the Star League Protectorate gaining a vote at these sessions the other lords and the Commanding-General had agreed that Dow could continue to speak as Chairperson of the meetings.  None of them really had issue with him, his history hidden by ComStar, he’d only recently come to the fore in politics.

“I do” Kai added slightly surprised to be nominated but more than happy to take on the nomination.

“Is there a second?” Dow asked looking at the other delegates.

“The Lyran Alliance will support the St Ives Compact’s nomination.” Archon Peter Steiner-Davion said supporting his brother Victor and the St Ives Compact.

“Trust them” Sun-Tzu whispered referring to the Steiner-Davion family line support of each other and the St Ives Compact, as it had always been.  The Federated Commonwealth was dead however the Steiner-Davion family it seemed was as strong as ever.

   “Is there another nomination?”

“The Taurian Concordat will support the Capellan Confederation for the position of First Lord.”  Protector Brenda Calderon answered the challenge.

“And the Draconis Combine will support them also” Warlord Minoru Kurita said before Sun-Tzu could even accept the nomination, even Sun-Tzu was surprised by the instant support.  Perhaps Kurita saw what Sun-Tzu had the Steiner-Davion voting block holding sway.

“Does the Capellan Chancellor agree with this nomination?”  Dow asked Sun-Tzu Liao looking over at the Capellan table.

   “I do” Sun-Tzu replied

“Then with the votes tied at two a piece” he said continuing on assuming who nominated a nation would vote for that nation.  “The Star League Protectorate will swing the vote.”  He said using the power that had newly been granted to the Star League Protectorate “the Star League Protectorate will vote for the St Ives Compact.  Duke Kai Allard-Liao you will be our new First Lord and will serve for the next three years, will you accept.”

   “I will accept” he said

“Then this Star League Conference is at an…”

“No it is not at an end!!”  Sun-Tzu Liao screamed leaping to his feet “This Conference, this entire Star League is a sham, I withdraw the Capellan Confederation from this Conference and from this League.  We stand alone against you all, any foreign troops within our borders will be destroyed, you are all damned.”  He said storming out of the Conference room stunning all the Lords gathered.

“If there are no more issues then this conference is at an end.  Please note that the SLS Invincible and SLS Covenant are in system overseeing proceedings, a strict no-combat policy will be enforced.”  Dow explained, none of the other delegates said a thing instead began moving out of the room ending the conference on a low note.  The Confederation’s place alone was worrisome to say the least.  Following through on his threat to withdraw from the League Sun-Tzu Liao officiailly withdrew his nation’s membership with the Star League within the hour, before leaving Terra immediately.

Star Adder Occupied Rudolpho
Raven Alliance, Periphery
5th December 3073

After four months of occupation for Rudolpho by Clan Star Adder liberation forces from Clan Snow Raven and from the Outworlds Alliance arrived supported by the WarShip.  Sitting in system the Star Adder’s Nygaard, a battle damaged Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Cruiser, the Exodus Crusader, a York-class Carrier and the six clusters of Omicron Provisional Galaxy stood defending the world from the Snow Raven WarShips Mount Batton, a Texas-class Battleship, the Nestling, a Carrack-class Transport and the Black Justice, an Aegis-class Heavy Cruiser, Alpha Galaxy and the Outworlds Alliance’s First Alliance Air Wing all commanded by Khan Lynn McKenna leader of the Snow Ravens.

The Snow Raven’s Black Justice moved ahead of the other two ships “This is Star Commodore Louise Siegel commander of the Black Justice” the ship’s commander broadcast to the Star Adder vessels in system “on behalf of the Snow Raven Clan and the Outworlds Alliance I declare a Trial of Possession for safe passage in they system for the Snow Raven Clan.  I bid this vessel, its aerospace fighters and its four attached DropShips.”

“The Exodus Crusader will refute this challenge, the Star Adder Clan will command rule in this system for now and forever.  I bid this vessel, its aerospace fighters and two DropShips.”  The commander of the Exodus Crusader answered.

“I bid away this vessel’s air wing and two of our Union-C DropShips.  I will also deploy our Titan‘s fighters as binaries instead of as Trinaries.” Louise added loosing the ability to use of the vessel’s internal air wing twenty OmniFighters in total.  That was not too bad for them since the Black Justice carried two Titan Aerospace Carriers and two Union-C type DropShips on this trip.

“I that is our final bid”

“Our bid is also final.”  Louise Siegel said turning to her officers “launch the Raven’s Wings and Raven’s Talons and have them move into formation and deploy fighters as necessary one star to join the rest of our forces, have all internal fighters and both other DropShips join the other ships we will collect them after this battle is over.” she said her officers nodded on the Star Adder ship the crew were also preparing for combat with the DropShips removing themselves from the Exodus Crusader.

It would be an interesting fight the Black Justice, two Titan-class Aerospace carriers and forty fighters against the Exodus Crusader, two Broadsword-class DropShips and fifty fighters.  The Black Justice was heavier and better armed and their Titan-class DropShips were better armed than the Broadsword, the Exodus Crusader was also faster and heavier armed.

Accelerating at 1.5G towards the Exodus Crusader the forward capital missile banks of the Black Justice engaged the incoming Broadswords three missiles each.  The first three Killer Shark Capital Missiles broke the back of the first Broadsword but just damaged the second DropShip.  In between the two WarShips fighters engaged in mass dogfights with the Titan’s from the Black Justice backing up their fighters showing their strength.  The WarShip’s main guns began to engage Naval Particle Projection Cannons, Naval Autocannons and Capital Naval Missiles crossed the gap between the vessels.  Though the Snow Raven gunners were more accurate than the Star Adders the Exodus Crusader’s the armour was also heavier allowing them to stick in the battle longer however the Black Justice turned showing the Exodus Crusader its broadside of sixteen Naval autocannons and three capital missile launchers, the accurate Snow Raven gunners breached the armour boring into the internal areas of the vessel breaching the hull.  With its hull breached the Exodus Crusader was no longer combat capable, its crew more intent on saving their ship than fighting off the Snow Ravens.  Under the guns of the Black Justice the Star Adder commander surrendered the battle to the Snow Raven ground forces.  Whoever won the battle would also win the Exodus Crusader because of its severely damaged state.

The Snow Ravens Alpha Galaxy and the First Alliance Air Wing then moved in system escorted by the Nestling and the Mountbatton.  The journey in system was uneventful with the Star Adders sticking to engagement rules and allowing the Snow Ravens free passage.  With the whole Alpha Galaxy, and the First Alliance Air Wing, at her command the and the two WarShips escorting Khan Lynn McKenna offered the Star Adder ground forces a batchall minimising losses, the Star Adder Commander Tor Cathis refused point blank informing the they would defend the world with everything they had.

As a nod to the Outworlds Alliance troops with them the Three Regimentals of the First Alliance Air Wing led the attack and insertion onto Rudolpho.  The Star Adder fighters rose to engage them and the DropShips of the Avellar Guard ground forces.  Though the First Alliance Air Wing fought well destroying most of Omicron Galaxy’s fighters and cleared landing zones for the first DropShips, the Avellar Guard then landed the Command Mech Battalion leading the way supported by two battalions of infantry.  Before the Outworlds Alliance troops can be overrun the Snow Ravens combat-drop their entire Alpha Galaxy on top of the battling Omicron Galaxy and Avellar Guards.  Through twelve hours of combat Omicron Galaxy is all but wiped out its troops forced into a retreat, less than a cluster is able to make it back to their DropShips and to rendezvous with the still heavily damaged Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Cruiser Nygaard in orbit.  The Nygaard and the remaining Star Adder ground forces were escorted out of the system by the Mount Batton while the Exodus Crusader was taken as isorla by the Snow Raven forces.

Spica Mountains, secret landing zone
St Ives Compact/Federated Suns Border
14th December 3073

In the quiet of the night in the mountains far from any civilisation the first DropShips of Clan Sea Fox’s Khanate the Fox’s Whelps land on the St Ives Compact/Federated Suns border world of Spica.  Fortunately for the Fox’s Whelps and the Federated Suns Spica was a sparsely populated under developed world allowing them to land without incident or detection.  Deeper in the system at a pirate point the Cho Polo, a Volga-class Transport vessel, was stationed at a pirate point.  Aboard the vessel was the rest of the Fox’s Whelps team that would build the trade base and factory in the world’s mountains and the rest of the Thirty-sixth Cruiser Cluster that would defend the Fox’s Whelps assets on the planet.

Representing the Federated Suns in his first duty as commander of the Capellan March was Field Marshal Nathaniel Hasek, while representing the Fox’s Whelps Khanate was Damien Kalasa leader of that faction of the Sea Fox Clan.  Also present was the pregnant Duchess Cassandra Allard-Liao representing the St Ives Compact, her brother Kai still weeks away from returning to the St Ives Compact from the Star League Conference.

“As part of this agreement you will be able to build and maintain equipment and house civilians on Spica.”  Field Marshal Hasek was saying “but the Sea Fox Clan will also be expected to sell military grade equipment to both the Federated Suns and the St Ives Compact and will be expected to keep the illusion that there are Federated Suns or St Ives Compact forces on planet.  Maintaining its defences” he said.

“We fully agree to these terms” Damien Kalasa said “we also intend to have an unmarked Sea Fox JumpShip pass through the system regularly to collect supplies/drop off additional equipment.  We request the right to travel inside the St Ives Compact orders and to defend ourselves from all attackers in either the Federated Suns or St Ives Compact.”

“The St Ives Compact agrees with these terms however we would ask that you transmit your security clearance on a secured channel every time you enter one of our systems.”  Cassandra Allard-Liao said agreeing to anything that brought more Clan-tech into her realm, anything that helped her small nation would be agreeable.

“The Federated Suns will also agree to these terms however, we will also be routing a WarShip through the system regularly to ensure the security of our borders and of our on planet population.”  Hasek said, Damien Kalasa nodded his agreement.  And with that the Sea Foxes had one more territory, one more trade world, their population would be safe in their growing ArcShip fleet however they would also be able to ground themselves if the time came to abandon their space homes.

Clan Nova Cat Territory
Barcella, Kerensky Cluster
Clan Homeworlds
16th/17th December 3073

Following news on the Chatter-web that the Nova Cats had involved themselves on behalf of the Davions in the troubles on New Avalon Clan Wolf and Jade Falcon both decide the Nova Cats have had too loose a leash for quite a while.

Entering the system on the 16th the Jade Falcon’s Twelfth Talon Cluster of Sigma Galaxy and the Gryfalcon Eyrie Cluster of Iota Galaxy supported by the Aegis-class Heavy Cruiser Frost Falcon assault the Barcella system.  Against them they face the Nova Cat Aegis-class Blade and a heavy aerospace contingent, from the Nova Cat Titans Cluster.  Though the Frost Falcon is able to gain the defending WarShip’s attention and keep them away from the invading ground troops the better skill of the Nova Cat gunners spells the end for the Jade Falcon WarShip.

On the ground the two Jade Falcon Clusters were met by the five Clusters of Clan Nova Cat’s Alpha Galaxy, once the pride of the Clan’s Touman Alpha Galaxy were more than ready to show why they should be the number one Galaxy again.  With the Jade Falcons not initiating a batchall or asking for safcon the Nova Cats assaulted them in the air almost as soon as they broke through the atmosphere.

The 489th Assault Cluster of Alpha Galaxy was in the wrong place at the wrong time as the Jade Falcons landed vitually on top of them was crushed under the pressure of the two Clusters and their attending DropShips.  The Jade Falcons quickly realizing the Nova Cats were well equipped to deal with invaders and abandoning all pretenses to dueling the Nova Cats in honourable combat.  The First Nova Cat Guards Cluster arrived in time to evacuate the last of the 489th Assault Cluster survivors while the Jade Falcons secured their landing zones.

Over the next eighteen hours the First Nova Cat Guards with support of the 450th Assault Cluster conducted continuous raids against the Jade Falcons damaging their equipment and the DropShips in a near constant stream of ground, air and artillery attacks.  At 06:00 the next day the remains of the Jade Falcon’s forces, two Trinaries, launched into the sky with two of their four DropShips fighting clear of the Nova Cats Aerospace forces they were allowed to leave the system without further incident.  Upon returning to the Jade Falcon forces these troops found themselves reassigned to a second-line Solahma unit for their utter failure despite the damage they had inflicted on the defending Nova Cats.

A Day later Clan Wolf arrived in system at a pirate point, knowing Nova Cat WarShips would be waiting at the regular entry points.  Even so the Wolves had taken no chances and had the Athens, a Hyperion-class Heavy Cruiser, for naval support and escort.  The Wolves Kappa Galaxy’s 101st Battle Cluster landed near the First New Barcella Guards Cluster base camp not far from a group of Nova Cat OmniMechs and vehicle factories.  The Wolves fought hard and fast overwhelming the Nova Cat defenders rapidly routing the cluster and seizing two clusters of equipment from the factories, informing the Nova Cats their Trial of Possession was complete they immediately left the planet, the whole attack a ruse to gain access to Nova Cat factories.

On the ways out of the system the Blade challenged the Athens the Nova Cats more than a little annoyed that the Wolves had used the news about the Nova Cats Inner Sphere dealings as a cover for a raid against their factories.  The undamaged and heavier Athens quickly overwhelms the Blade with heavy naval particle cannons, capital missiles and better manoeuvrability, the crippled Blade is rapidly disabled and left to drift by the retreating Wolves more than proving the worth of the Wolves capturing the ship from the Lyran Alliance.

And so ends 3073, hope you enjoyed

That's why it was written, now into '74 with a gamble

3074

Outside Luck City, Kyeinnisan
Clan Sea Fox Land hold
Former Free Worlds League
8th January 3074

Known by many names over the centuries, the most recent being the Gambler’s World, Kyeinnisan was a nearly completely lawless.  Corporate police tried to keep control in the worlds multiple gambling establichments and games areas of the world which sat near the centre of the Free Worlds League between the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth and the Duchy of Oriente.  During the united Free Worlds League-era leader Captain-General Thomas Marik allowed the world to flourish as a gamblers paradise and promoted the world as somewhere that anyone in the Inner Sphere could make money.  This had increased the tourist trade on the world immensely and created plenty of crime and intelligence operations on the world.  Thomas Marik’s united Free Worlds League had the power and resources to place a heavy intelligence (SAFE) and security presence on the world keeping the locals and visitors in check and external states operations under control.

When the FWL had fallen into disarray many of these SAFE employees had found work for local law enforcement and much of the security forces had been folded into the militia on the planet making Kyeinnisan was one of the most secure worlds in its former territories.  This was why Clan Sea Fox had picked Kyeinnisan as their newest target and why the Territorial Waters Khanate led by the Fifty-first Strike Cluster and the WarShip Perilous, a Carrack-class Transport, had come to the world.

The local population barely noticed the Clan take over, the milita forces agreeing for them to land on the world without a shot fired, although the Sea Foxes do take control over their Mech forces for their own security.  In exchange the Sea Foxes agree to defend the world from all outsiders and not to put any controls on local business or attempt to stop the flow of tourists to the world.  Like the Fox’s Whelps move before on Spica the Khanate took possession of the world for the Khanate first and the Clan second.  The Territorial Waters set this world up, like all other Sea Fox Inner Sphere Worlds, as a trade world open to all members of the Former Free Worlds League.

A few days after this move, by the Territorial Waters, the Deathstrike Khanate with a trade base on Tortuga in the Nova Cat’s Den trade Clan Nova Cat the Plasma Cannon technology for a star of brand new SM-series Hovertanks.

Pride of New Samarkand, Kyushu-class Frigate/Carrier
Draconis Admiralty Fleet
Periphery Near Draconis Combine
20th January 3074

Following the discovery of the Nova Cat involvement in the Federated Suns to stop the Varnay attack on the Davion family, the Nova Cat opening of an embassy on New Avalon and the growing amounts of Clan technology in the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns the Warlord Kiyomori Minamoto of Pesht decides that enough is enough and takes efforts into his own hands.

Without orders from Luthien to counter this threat possessed by the Federated Suns/Nova Cat alliance the Warlord took steps to minimize it contacting the Pride of New Samarkand, a newly retrofitted Kyushu-class Frigate/Carrier, and ordered it to conduct operations in the Periphery and destroy and Federated Suns or Nova Cat supply ships or patrol craft.

Sitting in his command chair aboard the WarShip Tai-sho Cameron Saito waited for the K-F Drive to jump to its next system when the sensor operator spoke up “Captain, we are detecting incoming Jump Signatures” she said, though Cameron’s rank was the equivalent to an Admiral it was tradition for commanders to be called Captain and he allowed it, after all he was Captain of one of the Draconis Combine’s most powerful WarShips.

“Finally” he muttered quietly they had been searching for any trace of their prey for two weeks and found nothing, “good, all crew to battle stations” he ordered into the chair mounted communications systems “all DropShips prepare to detach, fighters prepare to launch.”  He said the Pride of New Samarkand was a vessel with many utilities it was time they all worked together to show the vessel‘s true.  “How many vessels are we looking at?”  He asked looking back at the sensor operator.

“At least four, possibly five” she said predicting what would come through the Jump was never easy but this was a state of the art WarShip they should have some idea.  Five vessels closely matched a Clan Star minus a command vessel, exactly what a Merchant trading star may have.

Twelve minutes later the first vessel appeared a Lola III-class Destroyer bearing the markings of Clan Nova Cat, the roaring cat with a twin starburst, the vessel was bigger than the Kyushu-class Pride of New Samarkand but the Draconis Combine vessel far out-gunned it.  “Bring us into attack position, not what we were expecting but let’s make the most of it.  Launch DropShips and a fighter wing.”  All four DropShips and eighteen fighters launched from the vessel’s underside closing on the Lola III.  Moments later four Carrack Merchant-class Transports arrived near and around the Lola III, the trade ships, the Nova Cats always did like their armoured transports instead of conventional JumpShips.  “The rest of our catch.”  Cameron whispered “launch all fighters” he said five wings of fighters launched from the underside of the Pride of New Samarkand joining the already launched wing, two regiments of fighters were now approaching the Nova Cat trade fleet.  “Bring weapons to bear on that destroyer.”  He ordered, the Nova Cat escort ship was already firing while ten OmniFighters were launching from the vessel.  The destroyer itself was ignoring the Pride of New Samarkand’s incoming fighters, all its weapons reached extreme range, eight naval lasers and several capital-class White Shark missiles, and all were targeted on the Frigate the Draconis Combine WarShip shook under the hits.

“Firing forward weapons” the weapons officer said the forward Heavy Naval Particle Projection Cannon engaged the Lola striking it’s port side severely damaging the armour.  The Nova Cat destroyer instantly returned fire again with Lasers and capital missiles, just as the Samarkand’s fighters arrived, the destroyer continued to ignore them instead firing yet again on the Combine vessel.  At that moment all four Carrack Merchants opened fire with their weapons arrays - though they didn’t carry naval weapons they did carry extensive conventional weapons designed to defend against heavy aerospace fighter forces.  With the volume of fire put out by the four Carracks any aerospace fighter or DropShip caught in their fire would be in for a very bad experience.

Again the Pride of New Samarkand fired again its Particle Cannon missing the destroyer by several thousand metres while all four Carrack Merchants launched their DropShips a mixture of Broadswords, Union C’s and a pair of Titan-class Aerospace Carriers.  Cameron suddenly realised what he was facing, both aerospace carriers immediately dropped thirty fighters each into space while the Broadswords and Unions were all well armed, combined with the Carrack Merchants conventional weapons Cameron‘s fighters would be heavily outgunned.  It was time to begin to even the odds a little.

“Close on targets, ignore the destroyer.”  Cameron said, suddenly the destroyer wasn’t a threat despite the constant naval laser and capital missile weapons fire.  The Pride of New Samarkand began accelerating intent on brining its Heavy Naval Autocannons to bear, they would make short work of the Nova Cat Merchant forces.

“I’m detecting fluctuations in their Jump Cores, the vessels are attempting to jump again.”  The sensor operator said.

“Understood weapons bring main guns on the Carracks, I want them destroyed before we even target that destroyer again.”  Cameron said as the destroyer engaged them with eight Naval Autocannons, several lasers and capital missiles, it was beginning to bite, ‘our turn’ Cameron thought moments before the Pride of New Samarkand’s main broadside guns opened fire either side of the ship.  The Glory Road and the Bright Star, Carrack Merchant-class vessels died in an instant as the heavy naval autocannons ripped through the weak armour and structure of the vessels, two Nova Cat crews died in an instant.

Moments later the one of the remaining Carrack Merchant vessels disappeared in a flash as its K-F cores activated allowing the craft to escape.  The Pride of New Samarkand’s last shots shattered the back of the final Carrack-Merchant just as its K-F Core activated, the Enlightened Path, the vessel was shattered beyond recognition by the barrage, the unexpendable K-F energy ripped the Merchant craft to pieces as it looked for a way to release the energy.

All that remained was the destroyer and the remaining four Nova Cat DropShips and most of the fighters.  The Pride of New Samarkand’s own fighters were being cut down in their droves and two of Cameron’s supporting DropShips were gone.  The destroyer continued to engage the Draconis Combine WarShip again with all its broadside guns, the vessel was beginning to damage them with engines and rear armour both damaged already.  “Fall back to a safe distance, have the DropShips and fighters break off from the Nova Cat Destroyer we are leaving.”

“We’re allowing them to escape?”  His executive officer asked

“Hai, we are” Cameron said looking at the man, he was loyal to a tee but sometimes not all with the plan “this was a Warlord’s order not a Coordinator’s” he said “we may destroy that vessel but we will also be destroyed, weapons cover our DropShips and fighters during the retreat.”  The New Samarkand’s weapons destroyed the remaining Nova Cat DropShips as it moved away allowing the fighters to make their retreat, unfortunately the Nova Cat Destroyer wasn’t quite finished engaging them with Naval lasers the entire time.  The Lola III cut down Cameron’s last DropShips before it gave up the pursuit joining the remaining Trinary of OmniFighters.  “Load our fighters and jump us away.”  Cameron ordered a few minutes later the Pride of New Samarkand jumped clear of the system with less than half of its fighters, hours later the Carrack Merchants that had previously escaped returned to help pick up the remaining Nova Cat fighters, the Combine had started trouble today, the badly damaged destroyer and the surviving merchant would struggle back to the Nova Cat’s Den to report this attack.

The Nova Cats would have their vengeance.

Capellan Shipyard Facility
Trznadel Cluster, Magistracy of Canopus Commonality
Capellan Confederation
3rd February 3074

Following years of upgrading the Capellan Confederation’s engineers deep in the Trznadel Cluster of the Magistracy of Canopus Commonality complete upgrading work to the Shipyard facility built there.  The facility now possesses two WarShip Construction Yards, engineers that have been waiting for months can finally begin work on the Capellan Confederation’s newest two WarShips the Feng Huang 2-class Cruiser-Carrier Sun Tzu-Liao and the Naomi Centrella-Liao.

Despite all the resources going into the shipyards and the high security provided by the Hell’s Black Aces and several other strategic assets the citizens of the Magistracy of Canopus had not noticed the build up in the region and the military of the Magistracy had not been able to break into the Cluster, to find out what was going on inside the Cluster.

Star League Holdings
University of Thorin Dig-Site
Thorin, Lyran Alliance
10th February 3074

Following several years of work on archaeology and excavation work the re-builders at the University of Thorin had wasted no time in laying the first blocks of foundations on Thorin.  With such a step completed and trouble in other areas dying down the First Royal BattleMech Regimental Brigade The Morgan‘s Lions, commanded by General Archer Christifori, was sent to the world for garrison.  While the on planet construction engineers from the Star League Corps of Engineering, led by Lord James Cavannah from Terra, had defenders from the Fifteenth Royal Battle Armour Battalion the First Royal Regimental Brigade was to take over all their duties.  The Fifteenth was fully absorbed into the Brigade giving the First Royal Brigade access to three Battalions of Battle Armour, the largest amount available to any of the SLDF’s Brigades, Collectively these Battalions are known as the First Royal Battle Armour Regiment.

Trial of Possession
Deep Periphery
Nouveaux-Paris Colony
18th February 3074

Two days before the 0ne hundred-and-twenty-fifth Dragoon Cluster of Clan Cloud Cobra’s Epsilon Galaxy supported by the York-class Destroyer/Carrier Brimstone arrived in system declaring a Trial of Possession.  The defending Sixty-sixth Garrison Cluster of Clan Nova Cat’s Zeta Provisional Galaxy had declared they would defend the world with two Trinaries of their troops - the Cloud Cobra commander Star Colonel Helen Steiner had replied with telling them that the entire One hundred-and-twenty-fifth Dragoon Cluster were about to land on the planet and take all Nova Cats that didn’t fight as bondsmen.

The Sixty-Sixth Garrison Cluster had engaged the Cloud Cobras as soon as they landed with their full force - none wanted to be bondsmen to the Cloud Cobras.  Following ten hours of fighting both the Nova Cats and the Cloud Cobras were heavily beaten-up however the Cloud Cobras were in a better position with the Brimstone in orbit - at 23.00 hours the surviving Nova Cats surrendered to the Cloud Cobras - but not before a member of the merchant caste sent a HPG burst transmission to one of the Nova Cat deep space boosters.

Royal Court
Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
21st February 3074

Following the resolution of the Varnay Crisis and the death of Field Marshal George Hasek the Federated Suns Royal Court and the AFFS High Command decide a diversification of power is needed within the Federated Suns.  Within the Federated Suns borders the worlds Caselton (Draconis March), Sonnia (Capellan March) and Tikonov (Capellan March) are transferred to Crucis March control moving more power to New Avalon.

Within the Capellan March there is widespread calls for New Syrtis to reject these proposals however Field Marshal Nathaniel Hasek refused to cause more unrest in the Federated Suns following the Varnay Crisis and supported the High Command’s decision.  With a major world moving into the Crucis March New Avalon also decides to diversify power slightly with Tikonov becoming the new Capitol World of the Crucis March with Prince Burton Davion, ten, becoming in line to be Field Marshal of the Crucis March. Until Burton comes of age local AFFS leaders led by Field Marshal Galen Cox, who has finally emerged from his cover persona of Jerrard Cranston, Victor’s aide, is made Marshal of the March with Duke Paul Bowman, Duke of Tikonov and former member of the Wild Geese Mercenary command entrusted to set up the new structure and command of the march.

New Avalon remains the capital of the Federated Suns and throne world of the Davion family.  While to appease the Capellan March Songgang, Peirce, Caldwell, Montour and Verdrigreis, all worlds in the Crucis March, are transferred to the Capellan March command giving the Capellan March full control over border defence with the Taurian Concordat allowing for more coordinated defences against Periphery aggression.
