Lithium-Ion batteries and triple jumps?
« on: 14 September 2012, 14:57:50 »
First book Ghost War Chapter 14, page 104-105 (in my copy atleast).

"...In one case, and we have confirmation on this, a JumpShip released a DropShip, jumped out, released a second, then jumped again and released a third, hitting three stations."
<cut out a paragraph detailing how JumpShips work>
"To do what had been described meant the ship was carrying a Lithium Ion battery. That wasn't unheard of, but it was rare. The presence of such a ship meant whoever the lions were, they had serious resources at their disposal. That ship should have also made it easier to track them because of its uniqueness."
Maelwys suggested this passage established
1) the existence of a Lithium-Ion battery and
2) that this device would allow three consecutive jumps.

Hence, my questions:
- Do Lithium-Ion batteries exist in the Dark Age?
- If yes, do they permit triple jumps?

Have there been indications it's lostech?

Hello,

Ahem. The reference to a "Lithium-Ion Battery" in Ghost War was an error on the author's part. The technology he was referring to was, in fact, the Lithium-Fusion Battery.

As noted, it cannot make triple jumps possible without recharging. As written, the quoted text describes only two jumps occurring fairly rapidly, and with no real indication of how long between each one. The goal is to imply sufficient swiftness to say "it has an L-F battery" (or would have, had the author remembered the proper term at the time and/or the editor caught
his mistake).

Hopefully, that helps.

Thank you,

Hah! I read right across that. I'm guessing the guy back then did as well.
Yeah, Li-I batteries are feeble and pointless compared to BT batteries.
