It doesn't do anything...

And if it's not going to have armor, why not a 10 tonner?

It does indeed do something.

SSW just doesn't display the Booby Trap, as I just noticed. Had to add it in myself.

It's a two-and-three-quarters million C-bill round of self-guided ammunition. Clearly somebody opened the history books to the "Imperial Japan" chapters on WW2...

Of course, it had better not get actually hit by anything on its way to its target, because between effectively no armor and trivial amounts of composite internal structure it just might crumple before its pilot can even hit the big red button in reply. :D

Well, I have to admit for a one-trick pony it's not exactly as cheap (I really would have wanted to use an engine supercharger, but I felt that 5 million C-Bills would indeed be too expensive for a unit such as this  :P ) as I had hoped, but for real damage, a XL appears necessary to drive up the engine rating. But thanks to its quite outrageous speed and the resulting TMM a destruction of the targeted unit plus collateral damage should be pretty much guaranteed.

btw, Endosteel would have been possible to avoid the Composite penalty. But somehow I felt the supposedly rare Endosteel may find better use on other units ;)

btw2, imagine a BV game with one side fielding a couple of those ugly buggers.
"Oh, you field a Daishi Widowmaker. Well, suit yourself. But I'll be taking 10 of those running bombs here plus the other mechs I brought along, ok?" :D

A much cheaper version (~50%) though it's more likely to get hit before reaching the destinated area and of course... less damage.

So, this is my last take on the Martyr and I dare say it renders a lot of Mechs outright obsolte. Why built a 35 million 95 or 100 tons mech, when you only need one of those 2.6 million, not even Endosteel requiring, pesky Martyr mechs to obliterate it? I wouldn't tell any of the pilots of the actual odds to make a successful ejection though. Sorry, a Full-Head Ejection system was just way to expensive and would have rendered the mech's concept a mood point.
Damage reads as: same hex (255), 1 hex away (127), 2 hexes away (63), 3 hexes away (31)

Tactic would be to run as hell, hope not to get hit (the TMM should help a lot, also an application of a human wave doctrine should prove efficient) and trigger the booby trap right in the midst of the enemy formation, optimally right next to that fancy Shrike mech.

Sounds like a good Lyran mech for the 3145 setting, eh? ;)

XL engine is way too pricey to waste on a suicide machine.

Well, the way booby traps work, to maximize blast damage per expended unit you want as high an engine rating as possible. And the best way to squeeze a high rating out of a given limited tonnage is with XL/XXL engines...

Exactly. And despite utilizing a XL engine it's still just 2.6 million C-Bills. Admittedly, that's not exactly cheap for basically one round of ammunition, but given what that one round can do, I'd say it's a modest price. Of course, if you're only fighting cheap, small mechs the benefit declines rather sharply.

One round of T-Aug is a lot cheaper. Yeah, XL/XXL is more effective, but if you're going with a suicide bomber, regular engines will get you more *ahem* bang for your buck, so to speak. Figure the engine size for a regular engine, calculate cost, and deploy multiple martyrs. That way a single T-aug unit won't completely wreck your battle plan.

But consider deploying 10 of those to supplement your forces. If the enemy formation is swarmed by 10 of those, your actual forces would merely have to sweep in and end the rest, probably losing not a single mech in the process.
So for the whole engagement your own casualties in terms of C-Bills would merely account for a single Nighstar/Cerberus/Templar/Sunder.

If you would use a Fusion engine instead, which would halve the cost per unit, you would get a) less damage and b) a higher probability of that thing getting shot down before it reaches its target.

Of course you could argue you could get potentially 20 Martyrs A's compared to 10 Martyrs C's... but then you would have need for more pilots, more transport capabilities, while less Martyrs would reach actually complete their mission.
Dunno, it's a trade-off.
I guess both variants would work, whereas the circumstances would determine which variant is to be preferred.

It's going to be a lot better than 2-1. It's going to start at 4 to 1 (XL engines are 4x the cost of a standard), plus you're going to have a lower engine rating. I'd estimate you can field 6 standards for the cost of *one* XL engine powered, but that's just a gut estimate.

I have both variants in this thread. Unless SSW calculates the C-Bills incorrectly, which would surprise me quite a lot, since that was never known to be one of its issues, the ratio is almost exactly 2 to 1.
