Clan Hegemony (An Alternate Universe)
« on: 09 July 2013, 15:43:48 »
The Clan Hegemony is a what-if scenario where all seventeen Clans invade the Inner Sphere, but instead of cutting a swath of worlds toward Terra, their goal is to conquer the former Terran Hegemony and resurrect the Star League just as the Camerons did centuries ago. The credit for the original idea goes to SteveRestless, who is also a major contributor to the balance and progress of the setting. The writing itself was all done by me.

By order of ilKhan N’Buta, I have assembled this record of our glorious return to the Inner Sphere, as well as our shameful descent into barbarism. I present this report to the Hegemony Grand Council for posterity, that our descendants may never forget what is lost when the Way of the Clans is subverted by greed.
-Grand Loremaster Kael Pershaw, February 7th, 3060

A record of Operation: REVIVAL would be incomplete without the historical context of its background. One cannot understand the invasion without understanding the Great Debate and Great Compromise that came before it.

The Dragoon Compromise and the Great Debate

In the year 3000, the Crusader-Warden debate reached its climax. The Khans of Clans Ghost Bear, Jade Falcon, and Smoke Jaguar each clamored for an invasion of the Inner Sphere while their Warden counterparts in the Wolves, Coyotes and Goliath Scorpions stood steadfastly opposed.  These six Clans formed the core of the two movements, with the remaining Clans divided up into their preferred camp.

When the Crusaders pushed the vote for invasion, Wolf Khan Kerlin Ward argued eloquently for the necessity of a reconnaissance mission before any true invasion plans could be drawn up. Many in the Grand Council saw the wisdom of this decision, and what is known now as the Dragoon Compromise was born. Fortunately, the Wolves overplayed their hand when they attempted to exclude every Clan but the Goliath Scorpions from participation in the Dragoons’ training and preparation.

Star Adder Khan Gerrik N’Buta, pushed by the growing strength and zeal of the Crusader movement in his own Clan, challenged the Wolves to a Trial of Grievance over their monopoly of the Dragoon mission. The Adder Command Keshik met the Wolf Golden Keshik on the plains outside of Katyusha city in a quick and ferocious battle that lasted a scant few hours. While the Wolves did win the challenge, it cost them the life of Khan Kerlin Ward and soured Adder-Wolf relations for decades to come.

The Dragoon Mission launched in 3004, commanded by Jaime Wolf and taking only two bloodnamed warriors with them: Star Colonels Natasha Kerensky and Vlad Dinour. In the year it took for them to arrive in the Inner Sphere, the political situation of the Homeworlds had already descended into chaos.

With the death of its most convincing and powerful leader, the Warden faction began to fall apart. The invasion seemed inevitable, and the newest generation of warriors itched to test their meddle against the fallen barbarians the Great Father had left behind. Only Clans Wolf and Coyote remained steadfastly Warden, though few of the nominally Warden Clans felt drawn to the zeal and pride of the Crusaders.

In Clan Nova Cat, Star Captain Riv Leroux had a vision of Operation Klondike expanded to the scale of the entire Inner Sphere. Each of the 18 Clan totems stalked out from Terra, rampaging through hordes of faceless bandits until nothing remained. Word of this vision spread like wildfire throughout the Nova Cat Clan, and eventually spread to the Cloud Cobras through their Rossei Cloister. Few outside those Clans took it seriously... until the Fourth Succession War.

The Fourth Succession War and the Great Compromise

When news of the Fourth Succession War hit, the Homeworlds were sent into an uproar. Immediate calls for invasion came from the Smoke Jaguars and Jade Falcons, but their demands for the strongest four Clans to invade alone were immensely unpopular with the ‘lesser’ Clans.  The motion was voted down 3-15, with only the Ghost Bears supporting their fellow Crusaders. Even Clan Ice Hellion, nominally fanatical Crusaders, was moved against their comrades by their dreams of glory in the Inner Sphere.

It seemed that the Council would be paralyzed into inactivity until 3035, when the Khans of Clans Nova Cat and Star Adder presented an alternate plan for invasion. The Frontline galaxies of all seventeen Clans, along with the bulk of their combat fleets, would pass over the successor states and the periphery until they reached the outer border of the former Hegemony. Each Clan would have an operation zone of roughly one 18th of the former hegemony, cutting off the barbarian-kings from interfering. Once all other worlds were taken, all Clans would participate equally in the Liberation of Terra, and from there would the office of First Lord be restored.

The so-called ‘Great Compromise’ met resounding approval amongst Clan Steel Viper, who saw it as their opportunity to implement and uphold the Mercer Doctrine.  The Cloud Cobras felt their duty to become the Conscience of the Clans, and by extent the new Star League, while the Blood Spirits felt the stirrings of their ancient purpose slowly returning to life.

The plan won tremendous support among the Grand Council, winning over the non-Canid Wardens and finding opposition only in the three core Crusader clans. When the vote came down it was 13-5, and a Trial of Refusal was called immediately. Clan Ghost Bear won the right to fight the Trial of Refusal over the decision against Clan Nova Cat, which pitted the Silverroot Keshik against the NovaStar Keshik. The Bears very nearly snatched victory when Khan Nadia Winson defeated Severen Leroux in a duel, but her subsequent death at the hands of Riv Leroux cracked the Ghost Bear’s morale. The Nova Cats corralled the slower – and outnumbered - Ghost Bears into a valley, where they were granted Hegira from the field.

The Nova Cat victory brought the immense glory and prestige in the Grand Council, and politically savvy Khans were quick to adapt to the shifting balance of power. The Wolves and Coyotes found themselves isolated, with the Goliath Scorpions only nominally holding to the Warden ideology through their honor debt to the Wolf Clan. Only the power of the Jade Falcons, Smoke Jaguars and Ghost Bears kept the Crusaders in position to rival the combined influence of the Nova Cats, Star Adders and Steel Vipers.

Tagged - I always liked the idea of a "Warden" Philosophy being exactly that re-establish a Hegemony and protect the worlds the SLDF were unable to.  While the "Crusader" view wanted to conquer the Inner Sphere and Periphery in revenge for the damage that was done to the original Hegemony and Cameron family.

Unfortunately I never got around to totally thinking out the idea - so I'll look forwards to more from this

One nitpick: there would be 17 clans in this period, not 18. (Of course, if you want 18 then sparing the Clan Widowmaker or Mongoose could make them the source of the change in events).

Interesting story. A revived Hegemony would be a deathblow to the Federated Commonwealth, of course. Then again, ComStar wouldn't like it either...

This actually makes a great deal of sense-- not only idoelogical, but strategically as well.  For one thing, it makes it clear that the Clans have a fairly limited immediate goal and that makes it less likely that you'll see big spherewide alliances against them.

of course, how are the clans going to react when they realize just how badly many of the hold Hegemony worlds were damaged is anyone's guess.

The Wolf Resistance and the Year of Trials

The Wolf Clan had wallowed in ennui after the death of Kerlin Ward. Their depression turned to rage after the defeat of the Ghost Bears in their Trial of Refusal, when they were forced to stand by as their prestige and influence plummet amongst the other Clans. Khan Tiana Vickers seized upon this growing anger to focus her Clan, turning loose the most outspoken Clusters against nearby targets with the goal of disrupting and delaying the coming invasion.

Their initial strikes against the Star Adders were resounding successes, netting them a full shipment of Adder Omnimechs as well as a sizable stockpile of munitions and spare parts.  The Wolf successes inspired a similar plan among their Coyote allies, who launched a major offensive on the world of Delios against Clan Nova Cat. Unlike the Wolves, who were focused on disrupting supplies and inflicting damage, the Coyote offensive aimed to conquer as much territory as possible and quickly bogged down after the initial trials.

As the fighting on Delios stretched out into months, the other Clans were not content to sit idly by.  Clan Smoke Jaguar launched their own series of trials against the Nova Cats, hoping to take advantage of their focus on the Coyotes. The Jaguar offensive caused significant damage to the Nova Cat Beta Galaxy, but their material gains were largely negated by the damage they sustained in their victories.

The Jaguar offensive allowed the Coyotes to gain ground on Delios, but they soon found themselves under attack on Babylon by Clan Cloud Cobra. The Cobra strikes seemed to trigger a frenzy among the rest of the Clans, as nearly every Clan launched their own offensives against their rivals or opportunistic targets. Clan Burrock assaulted the Blood Spirits on Arcadia, the Hell’s Horses launched an offensive against the Ghost Bears, the Steel Vipers launched a major assault on Hellgate that reclaimed half of the world from Clan Snow Raven, the Ice Hellions, Goliath Scorpions and Fire Mandrills fell into a three way quagmire on Marshall and the Jade Falcons struck the Wolves on Glory with the full might of the Jade Falcon Galaxy.

Caught in a two fronted battle with Clans Star Adder and Jade Falcon, the Wolves found their material gains erased by losses over the course of three months. The Warden rage had been all but spent, but Khan Vickers refused to back down, seeing her duty as a Warden to inflict as much damage as possible to the Invasion – even if it cost the life of her Clan.

She was advised and pleaded with to choose another course, but steadfastly refused. Finally, Wolf saKhan Ulric Kerensky challenged her ability to command and killed her in a Trial of Grievance on the plains of Glory. He was elected to the Khanship in a Clan Council shortly thereafter, and immediately went before the Grand Council to propose an end to the fighting.

He called for the election of an ilKhan to stymie the wasteful warring between Clans. The matter quickly passed a majority vote, and in a highly contested election Star Adder Khan Cassius N’Buta won out over Jade Falcon Khan Yvonne Hazen.

More please. I love this concept, where the crusaders are not froth at the mouth nutsies, but they actually contain a real plan and strategy. Plus, I want to see another real terran power. (The pansy Republic doesn't count)

I hope Aidan Pryde actually survives in this one. He had so much more to do with Jade falcon!! He would have put the "Holy" back into the Crusaders.

Understandable since our early discussions did involve changing what clans were extinct, and making the Mongeese a specialist clan.

Ditto. That 'froth at the mouth nutsies' aspect seemed to diminish the Crusaders as villains when I first read the Clan novels years ago. Nice to see some brains amongst them.

"Fortunately, the Wolves overplayed their hand when they attempted to exclude every Clan but the Goliath Scorpions from participation in the Dragoons’ training and preparation.

Star Adder Khan Gerrik N’Buta, pushed by the growing strength and zeal of the Crusader movement in his own Clan, challenged the Wolves to a Trial of Grievance over their monopoly of the Dragoon mission."

Someone else beat me to posting this concept! The AU I'm working on involves the Dragoons being a multi-Clan force, albeit for a different reason.
All Clan totems are equal but some are more equal than others.

"The Succession Wars solved no problem. Their effects, both immediate and indirect, were either negative or disastrous. Morally subversive, economically destructive, socially degrading, confused in their causes, devious in their course, futile in their results, they are the outstanding example in Spheroid history of meaningless conflict."
The Third Star League's view of the Succession Wars, plagiarised from an ancient Terran historian's judgement of the Thirty Years War.

On that point, it didn't actually change - the Wolves won that trial, so the Dragoons are still a Wolf force. The key point at which this AU differs is that Kerlin Ward dies early, so nothing that he had a hand in beyond the Compromise occurs.

I'm glad you like it though!

Hey guys, sorry I disappeared - I was without a computer for three months after I moved and got a new job. I want to try and pick this up again, though admittedly it's always difficult when the momentum has run out.

So, to try and get back on track, here's a glimpse from the future.

"Enough of this madness! We have wasted the last three hours bickering over jurisdiction and command like these filthy barbarian politicians! ilKhan, if you will not impose order upon this kurultai then I am left with no choice.

I am Khan Timur Malthus of Clan Jade Falcon and I lay claim to the honor of retaking Unity City! We Jade Falcons shall take the city alone, like true warriors, and the glory of our victory will be etched into the stars itself!

Khan N'Buta, you claim that the city cannot be taken with less than two full galaxies. Your caution is unbefitting of a warrior with your codex, but I should expect no less from the mastermind of the Great Compromise. With the stockpiles we have already built, I will retake the city with three clusters: The Turkina Keshik, the Jade Falcon Guards and the 2nd Falcon Jaegers. All of you know of their battle records - their skill and ferocity is unmatched, and the Jade Falcon Galaxy is based in San Francisco. We can begin the operation in 48 hours.

The ilKhan’s Peace: Part One

Cassius N’Buta’s first act as ilKhan was to declare a moritorium on trials for territory and Bloodnames between Clans. Without these objectives to fight for, the size and scope of trials would be greatly reduced, as the use of a single legacy or production output could not justify the use of entire clusters.

Khan Leo Showers of the Smoke Jaguars sought to refuse the edict, but upon seeing the Council’s overwhelming support for the measure and recognizing the immense odds he would be against, he backed down. With the measure passed, the ilKhan could move on to the most important task ahead of him: Planning for the invasion.

N’Buta ordered every Clan to begin stockpiling war material in unheard of quantities. Each galaxy was to have enough munitions to sustain a month of high-intensity trials, with at least a cluster of spare frontline-quality mechs. He referenced the journals of Absalom Truscott during his planning of Klondike, extrapolating the scale of the operation and even going beyond to take into account any unforeseen setbacks.

The Khans were not pleased, to say the least. While the larger Clans could easily keep up with the production required - and even surpass it, in some cases - the smaller Clans would lag behind by years. Khan Schmitt of the Blood Spirits suggested that the larger Clans share their factory output, but was quickly shouted down. The weaker Clans should fight for what they lacked, argued Khan Hazen, and if they were too weak to keep up they should be left behind.

The Council was nearly derailed by another series of trials before Khan N’Buta intervened, declaring his intention to re-open the Strana Mechty MechWorks and overhaul it to produce older model Omnimechs to fill the production gap. Again, Khans Hazen and Showers sought to interfere and derail the ilKhan’s plan, but their objections were silenced when Khan Kerensky of the Wolves offered the schematics of the Woodsman Omnimech to the program - as well as declining his Clan’s share of the production.

“We Wolves have more than enough factory production to meet the ilKhan’s quotas. Unlike some Khans present, we do not fear putting our fellow Clans on a more even footing. I am confident of my warriors’ ability to demonstrate their superiority… though, I can see why Khans Hazen and Showers may not hold the same confidence in their own warriors.”

ilKhan N’Buta swiftly overturned Khan Showers’ call for a Trial of Grievance, pointing out that it would be a waste of time to interrupt such an important Kurultai for a minor slight, and called for a vote. The measure passed unanimously, with both Falcons and Jaguars forced to cooperate by the Wolf’s taunts. They, too, were quick to turn down their alloted share of the production, stating that the quality of anything coming out of such an old factory would not match up to their standards.

With the voting settled, the ilKhan called for more ‘Mech nominations. There were four production lines in the mothballed facility, and so far only the Woodsman had been offered. The Coyotes were quick to offer the Coyotl and Lupus, two of the first Omnimechs ever made and centuries out of production, and the Hell’s Horses offered to fill the last line with the Nova - knowing it would free up space in the Tokasha Mechworks if they no longer needed to produce spare parts for the outdated Omnimech.

With the matter settled, the ilKhan dismissed the council and made preparations to re-open the mothballed facility. While most of the Clans seemed happy with the way it had gone, the tensions and hostility that had characterized the previous years still ran strong - and they were more dangerous to the coming operation than any logistical shortcomings could ever be.
