Explosion/Smoke marker Now with How To Pics
« on: 04 August 2013, 14:55:31 »
I saw a 40k player use these and just had to do my own.

They are really easy to make as well.
LED tea lights (so they flicker)
cotton balls (4 or 5 per tea light)
hot glue gun and glue sticks
flat black spray paint

How to
1. Gently pull cotton into a larger "blob"
2.Glue to Tea Light base.
3.Lightly glue cotton balls together
4. Let cool
5. Spray paint to desired tint. I went with random darker patches.

Step 1: Gently pull cotton into a larger "blob"

Step 2: Glue to Tea Light base.

Step 3: Lightly glue cotton balls together

Step 4: Let glue cool for a 10 seconds or so.

Step 5: Spray paint to desired tint. I went with random darker patches.

thanks for the great idea, I made a pair but glued them up with RTV, also I went lighter on the black primer so mine are lighter, but once it starts to cool down I"ll airbrush the paint on and it should look better than the spraycan I used.

Post a pic . The only thing I can think of is the hot glue gives it some strength.

Based on the first shot, my guess is that Saint makes the cotton-ball cloud hollow . . . that he surrounds the tea-light with cotton but does not cover it - except for the top of the cloud.  In the end it might resemble what we do with Halloween pumpkins.

But that's just my guess.

Where is a good place to buy the tea lights?  I was thinking of cutting out some windows on a printable building and adding something similar to this on this inside to simulate burning buildings on the battlefield.

I got mine from Walmart, they are with the candles and cost around $2.50. Craft/Hobby stores should have them as well. O0

Did you just spray the tops black or what? How did you achieve the fade?

These 16 lamps were not mine so I have no idea to be honest.  Mine are still on a shelf waiting to be made.

Here's a blog on making the cotton smoke, it looks like you leave the tops black. I couldn't find the one blog I saw a few months back but they lightly sprayed the bottoms orange and did a hit of dark gray on the top so that it faded down.

Saint brought these in the last few games we had. Awesome work. Wally World has the tea lights in white, black and orange for Halloween, 4 for $2.50. Nice bright orange flickering light.  :)

I'm going to make up a few for the next time we play.  :D

Finished my 6 and they look awesome.  I think mine had way too much black paint so the light does not shine through as brightly as it should so just a caution on how much spray paint you use.
