Life on Peripheries
« on: 18 September 2013, 04:50:15 »
I'm not really into building Mech's or war machines. My part of the job in our small nerd community located around 18°32'E 54°32'N is the world - what happens there and the way people live there before it becomes an AO for the machine of war. The following photos are all from the game table, sometimes slightly corrected (i.e. rods removed for flying vehicles, background changed). Photos are made by Kebab and me.

The board:

"An ancient starship, buried in the sands..." ;)

M577 and UD-4L (ryoken3050 made great stats for them) :

The way most people roll:

Fires happen. Nobody uses water to put them down:

Being shot at

HPG or some satellite control centre:

Another village:

Centrally marketplace and the well:

The loudest hex on the map :D

This is the set for the desert/arid planets, of course Star Wars Tatooine, Dune, Homeworld and simply Tunisia/Morocco inspirations are visible. This set is still in development and I will be glad to show You the improvements if You so choose to. The general idea of the campaign starting from this location is to run across all the major places and dates across the timeline of BT universe, kind of an introductory campaign to the entire game universe.

Utterly fantastic!  It's very well done.  I also like the editing of the initial shots.

Bravo!

Thank You very much. All edited pics are taken and worked on by Kebab.

I try to build structures without humans and crowds occupying their hexes. This is supposed to represent the village that fled away before Mechs, but also to represent people moving around during movement phase (I have some home rules for crowd behaviour). Vehicles I usually try to model manned.

Every now and then there is a need to park Your Mech and have a coffee. Or hot, sweet tea. Important is, not to take it to go and hurry but to have a sit, read a paper and look at the people hurrying in their daily purposes. Take five before we start destroying their lives:

Oh, they keep some stuff in the backyard, too:

There is this house in the village that often has a flickering light inside despite late night. You might think that this is the craddle for some illegal or conspiracy activity, so You send recon or drones closer. And as they approach, they hear this characteristic "waaaa! waaa!" and they can even see the parents' tired faces. This may be Mech stomping that woke up the toddler; this may be colic; this may be palsy with painful muscular spasm. Being a child with problems is never easy, especially on the Periphery. Maybe in couple of years he/she will walk to school almost normally and the parents will live long enough to see it grow up. Become technician or medic in the machine of war.

The lights do flicker, this is the same base as for the explosions mentioned in the other thread here. Looks really like candle burning inside, good effect.

This is fantastic work. I think what makes it especially appealing is the way you've textured the hexes. It makes them feel more like weird-but-natural features than part of a game board.

This is probably why your work absolutely rocks! Little details you notice and change over time add up to..... Fantastic!

What's the board made of?

Thank You very much.

The material is extruded styrofoam - "styrodur"? Not sure about English name.

This is my first board, so it was carved. Right now i am experimenting with some less time consuming and more effective techniqes, like selective chemical melting. Than i add textures - in this case either some fine powder that simulates stoney desert.

The hardest are sandy dunes, I still experiment here.

Of course these visual effects have their price. They are not as rock-solid as pewter and resin castings, and the board requires regular service checks.

I have one AAR from a game on it, where would be a good place to post it?

What are you using for those civilians?

Thank You very much.

I don't have much of a choice regarding civilians - mainly Chinese 1/300 architecture diorama ones plus a set of Arab civilians from GHQ I believe - this one had children so was particularly useful. Also some converted soldiers. I believe US market has more options there.

Love the scene, and that wrecked ship (is that correct?) is a real cool piece.

Thank You. The wrecked ship it is.

This is another example how the setting looks on board (bakground added).

And the battle for liberation of slave camp (no AAR yet):

How would they transport goods?

This may be too fantasy so anyone who lived on the desert please let me know if I am not a bit off with this. Still, I wanted it - the sailcars. Some of them more for fight and some for trade:

silent language of desert and winds
engraved in her soul and
every night stairing towards the sky
fighting with her own guesses
which she made to catch the star
her beloved was following (...)"

Reminds me of mad-max.  It's great stuff.

One question - are those hexes indentations in the sand?  If so, what's the inspiration for that?

This was one of the many attempts to create flat area without cut lines. And the preparation for the making of dunes.

Jabber class freighter. Hopefully able to transport two Warhammers (or maybe a lance even if a proper cargo bay is installed).

Jumper class courier. Fastest way to deliver things and people within the system.

I always wanted to have my Lance in a decent statoining place, just like John Blackwell did his legions HERE.

Of course, I only have a rotten Lance, with little or no logistics around. BUT - I too have cooling agent tanks, as well as storage areas and a lot of junk. I still work on some structures, but the general effect is like this:
