(Answered) Unit Maintenance Time Requirements
« on: 21 February 2014, 11:29:11 »
How much time do various units require for maintenance?

The chart on page 170 lists the time required per unit type, which is great, but when is that time used?  Is that per maintenance cycle (basically every day), or is that per week or something?

This question was kind of asked in this thread:
http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,24918.0.html

And the answer would almost seem to indicate that every unit, regardless of type or mass, requires 8 hours/week.  Obviously, that answer isn't officially canon, without an official errata, but that seems to contradict the book.

Also, some units, like space stations, warships and some mobile structures, which require more than 8 hours for maintenance, don't fit either explanation.  If the time listed is per maintenance cycle, then the 24 hours listed for warships doesn't work (since you can't use extra tech teams to help).  If it's 8 hrs/week, then 24 hours maintenance also doesn't work.

---

Secondary question:

Either way you answer above, it seems that a single tech team could pretty obviously support more than one unit, in many cases.

For example, a medium 'mech, requiring 60 minutes maintenance time, could mean that a single tech team could handle eight of them, in a maintenance period (or five of them, if it's "per week").

Obviously, rearming and repairing battle damage would take more time, filling that single tech team's schedule.  But, in peacetime, does this mean a tech team could handle one or two lances, instead of just a single 'mech?  For larger campaigns, and things like garrison contracts, this could be financially important.

Thanks.

See p. 166:

TIME
Unless agreed otherwise (or dictated by the conditions of a spe-
cific scenario), players have eight hours between each scenario
during which they can carry out maintenance and repairs. If play-
ers are tracking time across days, weeks, months and so on, then
each day provides eight hours of productive work. This is referred
to as the Maintenance/Repair Cycle.

So essentially, when nothing is stated otherwise or there is no GM between each battle, you have 8 hours of repair time.  To track that correctly it is better to say that each Tech team provides you with 8 Hours.  Leftover Time can be used to repair or customize Units.  So yes, one Techteam could service two lances of medium Mechs.

Warships would just need 3 days of maintenance after each Scenario when the GM does not change anything.

Thank you very much.

It almost seems like the "one 'mech, one tech team" standard is overkill.  A company could be served by two attached tech teams, with a floating repair/rearm/refuel unit providing needed extra support on the battlefield.
