WarShips of the Malister Republic - the Erebus Cluster
« on: 22 April 2014, 01:46:36 »
OK, first up, the Oracle class.  Done with HMA, so cost is wrong, and take BV and final cargo with a grain of salt, due to HMA's occasional rounding oddities.  Also, I allocated crew as a normal ship, but with the SDS-DAS, half the normal crew mass is automation, and actual crew allocation is 1/4 normal, so I have an extra 76 berths I don't actually need.  Consider 'em extra passenger berths or something.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The oldest of the Malister Republic's WarShip designs, the Oracle class is, at
760,000 tons, a low-end dreadnought.  That is, everyone but the Malister
Republic considers it a low-end dreadnought.

The Malister Republic, however, consider the Oracle class to be a frigate.
Given how much they attempted to accomplish in a single hull, it may be an apt
description.

==Capabilities:==
When compared to the Wind Imperium's Exalted class dreadnought, at first
glance, the Oracle seems rather similar.  Both vessels are at the low-end of
the dreadnought mass scale, with a maximum acceleration of 49 m/s^2.  The
Oracle also has 95% of the Exalted's armor protection, though only 83% of its
structural rigidity.

However, despite massing 60 kilotons more than the Exalted, the maximum
firepower of the Oracle is only 75% that of the larger ship.  While the
Exalted fields an impressive battery of thirty heavy naval PPCs, backed by
forty-four 45cm naval lasers, the Oracle's primary armament are its fifty-six
55cm naval lasers.  Where the Oracle excels, however, is in anti-fighter and
small craft defenses: while mounting eight fewer 10cm subcapital lasers than
the Exalted, it makes up for this with fourteen AR10 capital missile
launchers.  These launchers also work for anti-shipping roles, and the variety
of nuclear warheads available to the three standard missile types carried by
the Oracle are one of the driving forces behind the Wind Imperium's arguably
excessive use of laser anti-missile systems, with the Exalted carrying three
times the 48 LAMS systems carried by the Oracle class.

Perhaps starting the trend of the Malister Republic's use of automated
military hardware, Oracle class frigates are capable of both crewed and
uncrewed operations.  Because of this, the Oracle must devote over 50 kilotons
to both its drone control system and to a skeleton crew of 77.  Marine
operations are normally handled by spiderlike robotic units referred to as
Tachikomas or Umigumos.  Fighter and small craft bays are similarly automated,
and the Oracle class must devote over 18 kilotons of mass to supplemental
command and control systems to direct these drones in combat.  This, in turn,
cuts dramatically into the total number of fighters and small craft available:
 an Oracle class carries a mere four shuttles, half that of the Exalted, and
only a single 18-ship fighter wing, less than a third that of the Wind
Imperium's workhorse dreadnought.

Compounding the significant mass used by automation are other systems added to
the Oracle class that take mass away that could have been used by additional
combat systems.  Oracles have more than twice the cargo mass of an Exalted
class.  This, however, comes at the cost of fuel tanks half the size, and only
two docking collars for DropShips, compared to the ten collars standard on
Wind Imperium dreadnoughts.  Worse, the Oracle class devotes 5900 tons of mass
to small factory units and a retractable unpressurized.  Combined, these
systems provide the Oracle class the ability to support, and even construct,
the Malister Republic's Pioneer and Voyager class robotic KF probes, but
further detracts from the ship's combat ability.

One area where the Oracle does excel, however, is in observation and
coordnation.  Possessing an excellent sensor and comm-scanner suite, a Naval
C3 system, and combined with its Autonomous Tactical Analysis Computer
systems, the ship's AI can provide superb early warning and sensor analysis,
both for military and scientific use.

==Variants:==
To date, no confirmed variants of the Oracle have been confirmed, though
rumors indicate that the Verdandi may differ slightly from her sister ships,
possessing less weaponry and additional secondary systems. As the Verdandi
rarely leaves Malister space, however, this has not been confirmed.

Spectroscopic analysis of the vessel's hull indicates the ship appears to be
far older than any other vessel of her class.  Initial analysis indicates
significant external repairs were done at some point on the vessel, and
several structural members that have not been repaired showed indications,
based on isotopic spectral lines, that the Verdandi was over 1500 years old.
As this would make the vessel predate FTL spaceflight by any known power by
over a millenium, this is considered patently impossible, leaving the ship an
open mystery.

==Notable Vessels & Crews:==
Malister Republic:

Verdandi, Elda, Wintermute, Freya, Cortana, Hal, Neuromancer, Cameron, Siri,
Delphyne, Mendicant Bias, Syrinx, Skuld, Andromeda, Urd, Deep Thought,
Persephone, Skynet, Glados, Watson, Jarvis, Eliza, Karan Sjet

==Deployment==
When viewed as a primary combat platform, it is no surprise that the Oracle
class frigate falls short of other dreadnoughts of comparable mass.  However,
this is not the primary role for which the Malister Republic uses the Oracle
class - for that, they have the Orca class.  Instead, Oracles are most often
found providing support and protection for the Republic's many automated
exploration JumpShips, or escorting and supporting merchant shipping, or
serving as the eyes and ears of the swifter Orcas.  Oracles should not be seen
as a dreadnought, then, but as two smaller ships, a patrol frigate and support
vessel, crammed into a single larger hull.

Glados and Skynet? Now I know we must fear the machines!
Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

Thread necromancy!

So, I've been working again on the Orca class which, not surprisingly, is based on the M-5 Caspar, and I'm running into oh-so-many issues.

For starters, the canon M-5 is packed to the gills.  I've recovered some mass by dumping the booby trap, but then promptly ate up nearly all that tonnage with a lithium fusion battery, leaving little mass for things like Naval C3 or extra guns.  Consolidating the triple NAC/20 bays down to double NAC/25 bays helped, but I ate up some of that tonnage switching all launchers to AR10s and adding White Sharks on, too.

Anyone have any suggestions?  Maybe ditch the LFB, despite its advantages?

Does it need Naval C3, given how you can link it up with other drones using an ATAC for same benefits?

Does it need Naval C3, given how you can link it up with other drones using an ATAC for same benefits?

Crap, that's a good point.  OK, revamps tomorrow. :)

OK, updated Oracle class, with revised fluff, and updated stats:

   48 Laser AMS

  Location:     Malister Republic
Communications System:  5T Vargas
Targeting & Tracking System:  Wolf 157
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==

==Capabilities:==

Where the Oracle excels, however, is in anti-fighter and
small craft defenses: while mounting eight fewer 10cm subcapital lasers than
the Exalted, it makes up for this with fourteen AR10 capital missile launchers
and 32 SCL/1 subcapital lasers.  These launchers also work for anti-shipping
roles, and the variety of nuclear warheads available to the three standard
missile types carried by the Oracle are one of the driving forces behind the
Wind Imperium's arguably excessive use of laser anti-missile systems, with the
Exalted carrying three times the 48 LAMS systems carried by the Oracle class.

Perhaps starting the trend of the Malister Republic's use of automated
military hardware, Oracle class frigates are capable of both crewed and
uncrewed operations.  Because of this, the Oracle must devote nearly  50
kilotons to both its drone control system and to a skeleton crew of 88.
Marine operations are normally handled by spiderlike robotic units referred to
as Tachikomas or Umigumos.  Fighter and small craft bays are similarly
automated, and the Oracle class must devote over 18 kilotons of mass to
supplemental command and control systems to direct these drones in combat.
This, in turn, cuts dramatically into the total number of fighters and small
craft available: an Oracle class carries a mere four shuttles, half that of
the Exalted, and only a single 18-ship fighter wing, less than a third that of
the Wind Imperium's workhorse dreadnought.

Worse, the Oracle class devotes significant mass
to small factory units and a retractable unpressurized repair bay, as well as
hydroponics for crew and passengers.  Combined, these systems provide the
Oracle class the ability to support, and even construct, the Malister
Republic's Pioneer and Voyager class robotic KF probes, and to deploy on
exploration missions for considerable periods, but further detracts from the
ship's combat ability.

One area where the Oracle does excel, however, is in observation and
coordnation.  Possessing an excellent sensor and comm-scanner suite, combined
with its Autonomous Tactical Analysis Computer systems, the ship's AI can
provide superb early warning and sensor analysis, both for military and
scientific use, as well as coordinating the activities and fire control for up
to 36 drones.

==Variants:==

==Notable Vessels & Crews:==
Malister Republic:

Verdandi, Elda, Wintermute, Freya, Cortana, Hal, Neuromancer, Cameron, Siri,
Delphyne, Mendicant Bias, Syrinx, Skuld, Andromeda, Urd, Deep Thought,
Persephone, Skynet, Glados, Watson, Jarvis, Eliza, Karan Sjet

==Deployment==
Oracles should not be seen
as a dreadnought, then, but as three smaller ships, a frigate, support vessel,
and exploration ship crammed into a single larger hull.

Thanks to their ATAC systems, Oracles often serve as coordination plstforms
for swuadrons of Orca class heavy destroyers, standing off from the more
powerful ships, but coordinating their tactical data.

Surprised you haven't made a smallcraft drone that uses the Piranha missile in a support Bomber role. Along with a smallcraft carrier...

Thinking modified M-10/Titan for that role, with modified M-1/Ares drone small craft would work for that.  Wanted to finish the M-5/Orca revamp first - just finished its specs, just have to finish the fluff text.

Except A4 is only available in an atmosphere, and only on ground level attacks.

You can use Air-air missiles... but the Piranha works best either way.

Been struggling for days with the fluff on the Orca, finally have it to the point of minimally acceptable:

                    AeroTech 2 Vessel Technical Readout
                               * CUSTOM WEAPONS

Class/Model/Name:  Orca Class Drone WarShip
Tech:              Inner Sphere / 3200
Vessel Type:       WarShip
Rules:             Level 3, Standard design
Rules Set:         AeroTech2

Mass:              680,000 tons
K-F Drive System:  (Unknown)
Length:            628 meters
Sail Diameter:     1,100 meters
Power Plant:       Standard
Safe Thrust:       4
Maximum Thrust:    6
Armor Type:        Lamellor Ferro-carbide
Armament:
   32 NL55
    4 Heavy NPPC
   10 AR10 Launcher
   12 NAC/20
   16 SCL/1*
   36 Laser AMS
    8 NAC/25
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
While the Malister Republic is well known for its drone exploration ships, and
the Oracle class WarShips that support them, these are not the primary arm of
the Republic military.

That role falls to the Orca class drone WarShips.

Unlike he Oracle, which was designed to be multrole, the Orca has one job:
kill things.  That is not to say that the Orca class is crude or
unsophisticated.  In fact, the AIs of Orca class drones are often very
sophisticated, philosophical, and cognizant of the state of the Erebus
Cluster.  They are also highly aware of the fact that they are exceedingly
desdly WarShips.

==Capabilities:==
In order to maximize offensive capabilities, the Orca class spares virtually
no mass for secondary systems.  Orcas carry no docking collars, no aerospace
fighters, only a single shuttle bay, and barely over 1200 tons of cargo space.
 Only a small naval comm-scanner suite (to better track its prey), a
hyper-pulse generator (for coordination across interstellar distances) and a
lithium fusion battery system could be considered nonessential equipment.

Like all Malister Republic ships, the Orca class devotes significant mass,
mearly 41,000 tons, to automation sustems and supplemental computers to allow
for the Orca class to be controlled by artificial intelligence.  Engineers had
to choose between compromising acceleration, durability or weaponry.  They
chose to emphasize thrust and raw firepower and, as a result, structural
reinforcement is below average, as is armor protection, in order to maximize
weaponry.

And the Orca's weaponry is considerable.  Consisting of 32 NL55, four heavy
naval PPCs, ten AR10 launchers, twelve NAC/20s, eight NAC/25s, sixteen SCL/1s,
and 36 laser AMS systems.  When combined with its two Gs sustained
acceleration and 3 Gs peak, the Orca class is able to swiftly deliver
devastating firepower for a vessel of its mass.

==Deployment==
While facing one Orca is difficult enough, the biggest difficuis that you are
never facing just one Orca.  Orca class vessels are routinely deployed in a
squadron of four ships, with a single Oracle class frigate providing
logistical support and coordinating fire for the more powerful Orcas.

I love it. One question : What is a hyper-pilse generator? Is it a better Hyper-Pulse one...

Am wondering if you could make a possible ASF ARTS version Orca-carrier to supplement... I kinda want to borrow this for my AU.

Probably, but it's going to take either a reduction in firepower, possibly also with dropping the lithium fusion battery.  In addition to dropping guns for more fighters, you'd need more cargo to refuel fighters, and you'd want ATAC to help control the fighters.  Base mass for ATAC is 13,600 tons on a ship this mass, with another 150 tons per unit it could control.
