What compliments Olive drab?
« on: 30 June 2014, 08:55:59 »

Years ago in the first BT book that I bought, BTC:RoW, there was an axeman in one of the colored, glossy, pages escorting a vehicle out of a base, IIRC. I have most of a lance that is planned with one of them in the painting phase and that image is what I am looking to build off of. The image, IIRC, does not have any other color on the mech, which looks good on paper but appears to be rather bland on a table top, something similar to having a bush or something being moved on the map. The dark olive color just does not seem to have a really nice color that compliments it to make it stand out on a table, at least that I know of. I just need something that would work well as a high light, preferably not yellow.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Red isn't a bad option.

Check out the Crusis Lancers, House Davion, on CSO. They use Olive with various highlight colors.

according to my color wheel (a must buy for painters I would argue) it shows olive drab colors (yellow-green) as being complimented by red-violet colors.

Also like stated, the Crucis lancers (of which I am currently painting up a battlion's worth) are mostly olive drab in color. here is a longbow with just a little yellow and blue highlights to 'break up' the monotony of the dominant color.

True Olive Drab (as opposed to dark green) is a mixture of yellow and black, so yellow is the last color to use for highlighting.    Using the "opposite side of the color wheel" method give you purple, although I think a bright red would work, too.   If not, you could always use white as that will contrast strongly against any dark color.

Earth tones for a muted color, yellow, little patches of red. And white and gray

Personally if it's the "army green" rather than the actual olive drab, I lean towards yellowish orange.
What also looks really good is a lot of various shades of grey and metallic silver with the green being the accent.
That's it! Challenge the Clans to rock-paper-scissors in 3050! A good portion of the 'Mechs didn't have hands so the Inner Sphere would win!
If I had a nickel for every time I've legged a Warhammer, I could put them in a sock, spin it around and leg another Warhammer.

My "Syrtis Fusiliers" scheme (aka 'Generic Davion Unit') is OD Green with Khaki trim.

In technical terms, the "compliment" of a hue is the one opposite of it on the color wheel, as other have pointed out. Using complimentary colors together is a common way to create a color scheme in art. Small areas of red on a mostly green mini, for example, will be very eye-catching because of this relationship.

But there are several other ways to create a color scheme, as well. See below:

You might think about leaning towards an analogous scheme, and using some blues. Earth tones are usually a safe bet to go along with any color. I'd recommend playing around with Kuler to get an idea of some color sets that could work for your mini. (For some really interesting schemes, be sure to play around with the brightness and intensity of the colors, and not just the hues.)

You might also consider metallics. Silver or bronze accents, for example, could go quite nicely with the olive drab, if you feel it would be suitable for your unit.

Black is rather menacing, and looks decent.  I like using gold, personally.
