The micro fighters are mostly well under 1/2" long, as opposed to 1" to 2" long for the 'Mech-scale ones.  You can comfortably put a full wing (6) of the micros on wires on a stand that will fit in a hex.  One of the larger scale fighters will occupy the majority of a hex.  The micro fighters work well (but are still oversized) for fleet actions along with dropships and capital ships (which are Waaaaaaay undersized compared to the dropships), the larger scale ones are better for strafing runs on a ground map or for aero lance engagements, where they match the 'Mechs.

Hold a full-sized fighter next to your thumb. The vast majority of micro-fighters would comfortably fit in the area of your thumbnail. They are TINY.

The micro fighters are indeed small, but if your desire is to put them on the board and scale is not an issue they work well. I use them right alongside the larger scaled fighters.

Whatever works for you though is all that matters.

Very much this.

Also, don't forget that if your group has players that have been around for a long time, they might have some of the fighters you seek in the larger scale. I'll bet that if you asked one of them nicely a few days or so before your game, they'd be more than happy to loan you some of their birds for the day. Heck, given how rarely a lot of people play aero, their fighters might just be collecting dust and you might be able to buy them off them.

well looking at cost is the main thing so if i can get 4 for almost the price of one then ill go for it.

I have to echo what Weirdo mentioned about asking other players about what fighters they may have. With my new BT group here in California, co-founded with Zhaofan, we have been poking at the idea of compiling a list of minis that the group possesses. It would allow someone to post that they are planning to use X mini in the next game, but that they do not own it and would like to know if Y player who does own it would loan it to them for the game. My only problem is that I have yet to paint many of my minis, or they need repairs to the paint or reglued, but hope to have a few batches up and running soon. That might be something to consider with your group.

Of course using proxies has been part of the game for as long as I have been playing. Micro fighters are indeed tiny and if I had any that I could easily access and place next to a BT scale fighter I would. Instead of worrying about price you should first ask people in the group, I am sure someone does own at least a single fighter and would gladly bring it along next game for you to use.

I'll bring some of my micro-fighters to our next game, so you can look at them in person.

Be warned: Remember those TIE Fighters that were at our last Starmada game? They're not much bigger than those.

I actually prefer microfighter for ground pounding. With stacking etc they are easier to fit around the ground units on a map, and they don't intimidate the other players, something important to remember with so many unfamiliar with aero rules.

I HEARTILY endorse microfighters for Alpha Strike - I cut hexbases into 6 pie pieces and each microfighter fits perfectly on one, and they scale perfectly to the abstract Aerospace map.

Plus, I was able to buy a full wing for each of my opfors for under $20.

Right now, I'm in the process of putting together a template for strafing, and it's the only thing I'm using a full-sized fighter for.

Would the old Aerospace Squadron miniatures be usable in Alpha Strike?

not bad you lose some detal but some comes out in its own right and the option and cost effectiveness of a good sized force will be nice.

The micro fighter base isn't the best... as with many of the aerospace bases the rod of the support and the hole in the base don't usually line up that well... I have to use 5 min Epoxy to fill the gaps/make a bond I'm comfortable with...

Another alternative I found at the local Officeworks (Officemax north of the equator I think...) are map push pins...
specifically the smaller versions of these:

I find best results with dulling the tips with a file before attaching them, then priming black. They're a little light weight so they're not quite as stable as the real bases but they're slighly cheaper than the real thing even if the blunting is just as much work as assembling the regular bases.  I'll have to take a pic of the results of such macguyver-ing when I get home.
