Heroscape swamp idea
« on: 07 June 2011, 16:20:57 »
I have Hougar to thank for the inspiration on this one.  I loved seeing his water hexes and wondered if there was a way to do swamp tiles in a similar way.  I purchased some shrubs recommended by Orko1 and added dark flocking and some ballast (probably shouldn't be there in a swamp but adds a nice texture to an otherwise bland tile).  Held in place with white glue & water.

Swamp:
Open LOS
2 MP
0 depth

A Jenner navigates the swamps.  My wife thought it resembles the Midgewater Marshes from LOR.

I apologize to some for the unpainted Jenner.    ;)

If the idea inspires, steal away.

Happy hunting,
JB

Those look really nice!  Good job!

Oh man, that's another incredible idea...

It looks really good. And your wife is right about the Midgewater Marshes. (Landroval server from waybackwhen...).

It's funny, as I looked at the single tile I thought, " uuh I don't think that works". All together on multiple tiles it looks pretty cool though.

Very nice work.

As i'm not a fan of Swampy terrain I just use these hexes for Woods in the base boards.

How do you store your hexes?
ATM moment mine live in Various boxes in a locker. And I don't think work like that would survive how I store them.

I had been planning to do the same thing - adding bits of foam to give them the look of woods.  However, after buying the grasses which won't go on the diorama (see "diorama"), I considered alternatives, hense the swamp tiles.  Those grasses weren't cheap, and it would be a waste to throw them out or never use them at all.

I currently use gallon-sized ziplock bags.  But I spied my wife's scrap-booking containers - 12" X 12" and a few inches thick.  I'll be exploring that option.

I love how that turned out. Stellar.
If I used hero scape I would steal that idea in a flash.

Sweet job. A similar process can be done to make high grasses or wheat fields. Just make a cardboard templet that fits to the outside edges of the Heroscape hexs and add flock and high grass. I'd suggest to make the templet large, say the 6 Hex pieces or bigger.

Awesome for sure, as I look at that same piece here I imagine it looking half as cool as that.  Great job.  And you make it look so easy.   [rockon]

How did you do the water effect?

How did you do the water effect?

The 'water' effect is most likely simply the shinyness of the plastic tile.  I considered flocking the entire tile, but after seeing the tile reflect light, I decided against it.  Only the edges of each hex have stuff on them.

If i played on Heroscape hexes i would do a huge swap feature just like this but add a few small islands here and there, this looks great and is also very creative. 8)

The swamp 6-hex tiles have holes which got me thinking.  I am in the process of building trees for the diorama using standard electrical wire.  Each tree gets trimmed, and I have leftover copper.  Why not build trees for the swamp?

I have trees for my future terrain and needed to make the swamp trees to a comparible size.  They must be removable for storage too.

Painted brown and flocked.  There is still some touch-up to do.

The final look - minus some touching up.  I am very pleased.  This should look good on a game table.

Grab any ideas worth stealing.

Happy hunting,
JB

That really does look good and im not a hex board player, i really want to see the full swamp when its completed and if its anything like this single piece it will look fantastic, well done on those dead trees they do look very realistic... :)

John are the grass tufts from Silflor? They look like the ones I have, but just a bit taller. Is that their buffalo grass?

Yes they are - Scenery Express 2-4mm and 4-6mm buffalo grass summer-green.  Good eye for product!

This side project is finished, and I thought I would share some final pics.

The swamp.  Some of the tiles are filled in.  These play as normal open hexes w/ no movement penalty.  There is, afterall, some solid ground even in swampy areas.

I can almost hear Gollum say, "Orcs don't know it, orcs have to travel around it for miles and miles.  But I found a way through."

One project completed.  Several others to go.

John, someday I'll have to track you down and have a game on your excellent terrain.

Just saying... not that that is creepy at all...
