New Forum Theme
« on: 09 September 2015, 14:27:07 »
Hi all,

Since we've decided to deploy a new faction selectable variant theme we thought it would be a good idea to poll the community to see if they like what they're seeing. This poll is going to run for 15 days, and during that time we want you all to try out the new theme and vote whether we keep it, go back to the old themes, or add new factions to the list. For those of you who run the Curve and Core defaults, don't worry. Those themes will remain.

Thank you all for your participation.

Not sure which option I need to actually click to express my vote with the wording of the question so I just clicked "no" but I too miss my previous theme that if it is available now is no longer named what it was and likewise miss the easy link that displayed replies to my posts or am being my usual unobservant self in not seeing the replacement.

Unread topics can now be selected per category. To the right of every category title on the index is an unread topic button next to the upshrink button.

Seeing how it's the same color & font for the main body, could you please be more specific or provide screenshots? The variants are usable selectable, and the existing forum theme is still available. Feel free to change at any time.

Not what I'm missing.  There used to be a link that allowed me to see replies specifically to threads I had posted in.

What you are referring to is the old "see all new posts" functionality.  Similar but different functionality.

I'll be honest, that it was even removed and that the old theme I was using is no longer available(I've checked) have made me less than a happy camper, especially since there was no warning about their loss.

To be honest, maintaining almost a dozen-odd themes safely, while adding new faction-based ones, reducing forum bloat, speeding load, keeping pace with mobile devices, etc., etc., etc. was becoming too much. We're mostly volunteer driven so options to accommodate every need is limited.

I have no problem returning to a single default BattleTech theme (along with the Curve and SMF Core themes) at the expense of individual faction themes.

As I mentioned earlier, the existing BT theme (along with Curve and Core) are still available. You need only navigate to your Profile -> Look and Layout -> Current Theme (change)

Not sure what it is, maybe the bright yellow but I prefer the old style. I'm all for having more options.

Edit: Yeah, just notice you can change the colors, still seems off but I'll give it some time.

I used a theme with light text on a dark background. It was far easier on my eyes, given the 12-14 hours a day I have to spend staring at a screen already. I've switched to the "silver" theme to bring the palette into a narrower range, but I'd much rather get some sort of light-on-dark text again.

Urgh. Can't stand the new theme.

Battletech 2.0 is so much better, font and all. Still prefer the CapCon theme but if not having faction themes is better for the forum, that is OK.

So what should i vote? Because the voting options are not the best ones... Answering with yes or no to a two-option question isn't clear. "No" i presume?

Not really sure which option to choose on this one.  Pretty much as long as the one currently called "curve" is available, I don't care what else is.  I'm really not a fan of whatever it is I logged into today.  Wish I could give specifics as to why, but I have no words for it beyond the "ugh, no" I muttered to myself when I first saw it.  [##]

Unread topics can now be selected per category. To the right of every category title on the index is an unread topic button next to the upshrink button.

I read most if not all of the different sub sections.  I'd much rather be able to click one link to get the full list of what's new.

Then again, not really an issue for me as long as Curve(forum default isn't it?) is available since it still has that link as well as the one that shows me replies to threads I've posted in.   O0

Your goals are understandable but some sort of warning would have been good or giving us previews of the new themes before losing the old ones would have been better and would have earned you more of my patience to get things worked out.

I was using the Republic of the Sphere theme but now that is gone I'm trying to find a replacement that doesn't hurt my eyes or look ugly.

I like the idea, and have had a cycle through the various themes. In general, I think they're good, although my eyes have trouble with a few of them - the green in the Capellan theme (and to a lesser extent the Jade Faclon theme) is difficult to read against the background, as is the blue clickable text in the Steiner theme; it'd be useful if the font could have some kind of drop shadow added to it, it would make text in all three themes easier to read.

It's more interesting than optimal, and therefore better. O0 - Weirdo

EDIT RotS theme is OK.

No worries. It seems like a lot of the link colors are a little too bright. I'm reducing the shade by a few notches to help. I've also changed the forum text to a different font and increase its size. Added shades to the bright white category headers.

Oh, wait, what? Those squares? That's how this works?
...
Too complicated for me, apparently.
I'll just go over there now...

So, yeah.
It might not hurt if the font were bigger... I've been using 110% zoom (on Chrome) even with the old theme. (I'm afraid of the day when i'll have to use 1080p display, helping my brother with his laptop was difficult thanks the resolution.)
Have the green selected right now. The colored text could be a tad darker, or the background should be darker, slightly more contrast anyway. Also not a fan of the shade of green (jade?) on those horizontal bars, slightly darker might be better.
Steel's colored text needs even more contrast, or just having darker yellow would be good. Same with red, and blue... and probably everything else.

EDIT Corrected to green. And did the font just change?

Ah, what happened to the font.
Looks good but too small with 100% zoom.
110% looks wrong (dunno why, just managed to be somehow unattractive while not being exactly bigger either). 125% is better except when writing, almost looks like bolded. Oh, well, i can live with that.

EDIT Now 125% looks way too big, yet 110% is too small.
Man, i need an extension that enables more zoom steps. Or i should probably change browser. I cannot, after all, change my eyes.

EDIT Sorry if i talk too much about the font size and zoom, i just realized how much it matters nowadays to me.

I just got new glasses some months ago. Small fonts have been terrible after that... might have something do with the fact i don't have to lean so much forward anymore to see stuff. (Honestly kind of worried about my sight, 'cause i'm only 25... Probably going to need pretty strong glasses in five years.)

If they stay? Yes. There are plans for about a dozen more. The colors will be renamed to their appropriate faction name as well.

Ok, I've returned the show replies and all replies back to the forum. Right now, they're towards the bottom of the index next to the "Mark All As Read". I will give them a nice button look before the poll ends.

I'm surprised at how frustrating it was being unable to see a compiled list of topics with new comments.  You never truly appreciate what you have until it is gone.  You are now my hero!

To be honest, once I managed to find where to change the theme, I changed back to Battletech 2.0.

I've only been on the forum a little while, but I find it easy to read and I'm used to it. Having options is nice, don't get me wrong there, I just didn't care for the new 'default'.

Obviously from the poll folks like the new options so those should stay. However, I did like the old theme. Can we get that back as one of the options?

Yes, rather than searching unread per category it would be nice to be able to search all unread posts again.
I especially miss the ability to search for new replies to threads that I've posted in

If they both "Unread new posts" and my unread messages on top the page would be the best.  I could live with this setup.

however, I prefer the BT 2.0 theme and promptly changed to it.

While I have unusually excellent internet speeds, even I'm seeing load times go from 4-6 seconds to about 1-2. It's really as close to instantaneous as I've ever seen and a far cry from the chugging speeds of yesterdays.

I went to back to the 2.0 theme. The new replies is handier at the top, and I find the thicker fonts easier to read. Also, the default background (Timber Wolf wireframe) doesn't tile in the new theme on a 1920 x 1080 monitor, leaving beige bits at the bottom.

I selected no since when it switched me to the some new version without the ability to just press a single link so that I could just see who replied to my post and also it I amost tossed my phone since I thought it had broken but it was the theme. Thankfully I changed it back to BT 2.0 ASAP and ham I'm at home and happy I happy ya are giving faction themess but the ability to see replies to post is a option I do not want to give up.

I appreciate the hard work ya admins do though keep it up I guessing most ppl actually like the new themes but for me its a no go if I loose the ease of the features BT 2.0 gives also I used to it. But maybe I should give them. Maybe.

Love it.

Little note, it seems the Lyran theme is missing it backing image.  I see the possible reasons for this:

a) It's a glitch
b) You are messing with me
c) The Lyrans are about to be wiped out.

I haven't voted yet, as I'm utterly undecided on the matter.

The new themes look alright to me, I'd use them, but on the other hand they don't improve my forum experience over the BattleTech 2.0 theme that I've been using it for years already. In the end I can (and would) use pretty much any theme.

I'm a heavy user of the "Show unread posts" and "Show new replies to your posts" buttons and consider these vitally important tools for how I use the forums.

And to echo others, thank you for your work and dedication even if it seems it isn't appreciated. It is.

Not a happy camper with the new theme. OK so the faction specific ones are shiny and all, but ffs put back the show unread posts / unread replies buttons. I do not (and will not) trawl through every sub forum to see whats new and whats not. I want a list of unread posts as per the last one.

I seem to have found where those are still in existance.  You just have to accept the hard on the eyes bright screen to read.

I am having a hard time getting used to the flip of the posts orders, or is there something I did or need to do to change it back?

Is theme selection tied to the session token?

It is tied to the session token as it uses the ?variant method of loading the selectable CSS. Once that session token ends after 360 minutes, it defaults back to the default. It's a compromise between user selectable and security ID.

Again, thanks for all of the positive feedback. I'm already rebuilding the old style header to replicate the original position of the unread buttons. I'll also drop the colors a notch or two to see if that helps with the brightness. As I mentioned in another thread, some of BT's factions colors don't translate so well across a computer screen.

The following themes are available:

SMF Core
SMF Curve
(Both default forum themes that come with the software)

BT 2.0
(Based off of Curve and the last "default" BT theme)

Republic
(A Dark 2.0.4RC theme)

BT Factions
(The current BT default with user selectable color schemes)

We've removed the following:
Hegemony, Liao, Davion, Marik, Steiner, Kurita themes (all based on old Curve).  Horribly out of date, slow and rife with security/browser issues.

Alright folks, refresh your browsers.

I still need to make sure it looks and works well in IE/Windows 10, but if you're logged in you should now see the standard header on the new forum theme.

Please let me know if it's running wonky (with screenshot and OS/Browser/Version) if you can. I didn't have time to test the crap out of the styling.

Knightmare,
It looks like the .reset CSS class is mucking some things up. The float:right makes some content move to the right side of the browser window at odd times. For example this poll has the poll title and submit button at the left of the page, while the options are on the right side.

Something similar happens with the Poster info block to the left of every post. The poster's name appears to be in the correct location, but the stuff underneath the name is moving to the right.

Here's an example:
<div class="poster">
<h4>
<ul id="msg_1084542_extra_info" class="reset smalltext">
<li class="postgroup">Major</li>
<li class="stars">
<li class="postcount">Posts: 4640</li>
<li class="profile">
</ul>
</div>

.reset {
    float: right;
    height: auto;
    margin-right: 15px;
    padding: 0;
    width: auto;
   }

When I disable the float:right part of the .reset class in Firebug I have no problems at all.

All this is happening in Pale Moon. Here's the build info if you need it:
    Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:25.7) Gecko/20150824 Firefox/31.9 PaleMoon/25.7.0

Look, dude, when you are a real mechwarrior you don't need to get all dressed up in cooling suits and cool helmets to work on your mech. You just strip down to your 1980s panties and crop top vest and start wrenchin' it.

The forums do not appear to be saving my choice of color between sessions.

I am also having this problem (Chrome on Windows 8, FWIW).

As previously mentioned, if you log out, or if the session cookie expires the default color scheme will load. You're still just a click away from having it.  :)

Also, on the SL/House Cameron one, could you up the contrast between the Cameron Star denoting boards that have new posts vs. boards that don't? Maybe it's just my eyesight but it's really hard for me to tell the difference without squinting.

Any reason it's tied to the session token rather than user preferences like all the other options?

Refresh your browser. My guess is your loading an older cached version. I'm going to force a refresh across the site, but that should fix what you're looking at.

How complicated of an answer do you want?  ;)

The simplest explanation is that these theme variants are not "true" themes. They're variant queries for a single theme. As such they need to be anchored to something, hence use of the token. Each color selected doesn't load a theme's XML, it just loads a CSS sheet and some anchored images. It's the best way to have in-theme selection options, one theme for maintenance, and the capacity to add new faction skins.

After any session expiration you're clicking exactly one tiny square to reload the faction skin of your choice, including a possible Snow Raven one.  ^-^

It's improved now, but still weird. The poll is still broken, and some of the usernames are still floating weirdly. I think it might have something to do with the size of the avatar images: Wrangler's poster info is lining up as expected, but cavingjan's isn't. I'll get some screenshots after I post this.

Ah, I guess that makes sense.  Makes maintenance easier.
Most annoying to me is that selecting the theme doesn't leave me on the same page I was on.

Neat.

Still need a couple light on dark themes, though.

One thing I can not stress enough: REFRESH, REFRESH, REFRESH

If you think there's something wonky, refresh your browser/clear your cache first. Chances are you've cached an older version of the forum skin in your browser.

Normally I wouldn't make changes like this on the fly, but you guys have been good about providing constructive feedback. I want to reward that help with a quick turn around. Consequently, this means I'm not purging the forum every time I drop new files or new skins onto the server.

Still need a couple light on dark themes, though.

Man, you guys are greedy.  ;D

The current "Phase 1" is to cover the major Inner Sphere, Periphery and Council Clans factions first, along with a mercenary skin. This leaves the following yet to be produced.
- Rasalhague Dominion
- Clan Hell's Horses
- Clan Sea Fox
- Magistracy of Canopus
- Taurian Concordat
- Outworlds Alliance
- Mercenary
- Republic of the Sphere
- Third Star League

Once those are finished and the existing skins finalized the Phase 2 plan is to create darker "flipped" versions of the original line up. The dark skins will have their own theme since adding another 19-20 color blocks to a single theme would make this a mess.

When finished the forum board would have the following themes available for use:
BT 2.0
BT Factions (Light) — what you're using & testing now
BT Factions (Dark)
Core
Curve

Future plans "might" include creating a third BT Factions (Lost) for BattleTech universe factions that no longer exist, like the Rim Worlds Republic, Clan Widowmaker, and so on. However, that's so far down the road and dependent on so many other factors that in all honesty, I probably shouldn't even mention it.  :)

Yeah, I'm having some "thoughts" and I'm not exactly sure if they're good or bad? Like, should this skin really look like a pleasure circus, or not?

At least the BT 2.0 is gonna be kept.

Does that include Regulan Fiefs?   ^-^

Anyways, I used to use two main searches on the forum, unread posts & unread replies.
Are they both now gone for good or am I just not seeing the buttons?

I would really prefer to search unread posts as a whole rather than try to comb through 12 or 15 sub-categories...  :-\

Thanks!

Now that I've had a few days to get a feel for the new forum themes, I've decided that much prefer them to what we used to have.  I would still like some texture in the bar at the top and the text area to be darker.

So, every time I open the browser and pull the forums up, I've got to re-select the wolf square. Is this the intended behavior, that it doesn't stick?
