Gumdrop-class Shuttle and Bug-Class Lander
« on: 02 August 2017, 14:45:18 »
Decided I wanted to do a more generic update of my New Hemet Civilian Exploration and Transportation System. :). Posted it on ourbattletech.com yesterday while the site was down here.

==Overview:==
Greatly resembling historical landing spacecraft from the late 20th and early
21st Century, the Bug-class lander is a small, two-seat spacecraft capable of
taking off and landing on a variety of planetary surfaces.

Incapable of aerodynamic flight, the Bug flies essentially identically to a
spheroid spacecraft.  Capable of 3 Gs of sustained thrust or 4.5 Gs under
emergency power, the Bug class can handle gravitational ranges of all known
human worlds.  Five tons of fuel give a delta-v of 96 km/sec, sufficient for a
45-day flight from Earth to Mars, though the two-seat Bug is considered far
too cramped for such an extended trip.  The Bug carries up to 5.5 tons of
cargo, with a half-ton usually reserved for consumables for the crew.

Bug-class landers are often paired with other spacecraft, whether used as a
small shuttle or runabout, or docked to other small spacecraft, like the
Gumdrop or Pogo class shuttles.  The Gumdrop is especially popular, as both
share the same compact Leenex 60 fusion engine commonly found in the
UrbanMech, among other common components.  The Gumddrop's "CHARM" (Civilian
Habitat & Reentry Module) pod, a conical escape pod, can also be used as
additional living space and life support for long-distance travel.

==Overview:==
The Gumdrop-class shuttle is meant to be an extremly low-cost spacecraft
capable of carrying up to six people, and travelling distances up to 1
Astronomical Unit (approx. 149.6 million km) in under 15 days, while costing
less than a million C-Bills.

Similar in construction to late 20th and early 21st Century small spacecraft,
but powered by a common Leenex 60 fusion reactor, the Gumdrop is not exactly
an aerodynamic spacecraft, and, like the S-7 Bus, does not generally enter the
atmosphere.  When forced to do so, it flies much like a spheroid small craft
or DropShip, landing on extendable landing legs carried flush against its
cylindracl main fuselage, ensuring that the large rear engine bell has
sufficient clearance to stay off the ground.  Atop the main fuselage is the
detachable main crew compartment, or "CHARM" (Civilian Habitat & Reentry
Module).  A conical module 5 meters tall, the CHARM functions in a manner
essentially identical to the ubiquitous escape pods found throughout the Inner
Sphere, capable of its own limited flight and emergency reentry and landings.

Paired with the full Gumdrop shuttle, however, the CHARM module has access to
the fusion drive, 12 tons of fuel and 4.5 tons of cargo the main fuselage
carries.  This permits the Gumdrop to achieve up to 288 km/sec of delta-v,
sufficient to cross 1 AU every 12 days, with reserve fuel to decelerate at the
end of its journey.  When its cargo hold is completely devoted to supplies and
consumables, this could support six people for 150 days, though in practice,
most Gumdrops rarely carry a full six crew and passengers, and usually reserve
more space for cargo.  The Leenex 60 engine can provide 2 Gs of continuous
thrust or 3 Gs in emergencies.  When paired with the equally-inexpensive
Bug-class lander, the entire "Stack", as it's often referred, has its utility
extended considerably, while still costing less than typical 20-ton
BattleMechs like the Wasp or Stinger.

I really like these... have you looked at doing 20 ton and 60 ton versions?

Cray's Pogo is 20 tons, as I recall, and was based on Big Gemini. I'm planning a 25-ton one based on Orion next, which has a 10-ton crew module and 15-ton service module.

A 25-ton version can get away with a 0.5 ton engine, so you could squeeze a little more tonnage out of that...

Unfortunately, the mass of the escape pod is pretty much fixed, though, which means you end up with actually less space, since the engine ends up only saving you a ton.  At that point, I think the Gumdrop ends up better serving as a follow-on/tribute to both. Alternatively, I could drop the escape pod, and give it a quirk "whole-cockpit ejection", fluffing part of the cargo as attached to the cockpit ejection pod.

The "Pack Burro" I did at 25 tons had 20 tons of cargo, but only one ton of fuel and a half ton of armor for a total of 21.5 tons.  The Gumdrop has 25.5 tons invested in those three items (including the Escape Pod), so yes, it'll have to be less.  60 tons is an engine break point though, and you get over 50 tons to work with.

Sorry for the long delay in response.  The site has been hard to reach the last day or two.

Yep, site has been a beast to reach, and I've been using ourbattletech.com as an Alpha site.

And, wow, 25 tons and 60 tons work out pretty well at 3/5. I'd realized it for 100 tons, but not those two.
