Project LEGION: Strength and Honor
« on: 15 April 2015, 17:46:17 »
Well here is the introduction and parts of Field Manuel: Legion (Terran Hegemony in Exile), things may change such as the name depending on how things go.  But I am starting now.

Legion: Strength and Honor
The Legion has become another great mystery the likes of the coming of the Clans and the Wolf’s Dragoons before that.  Over the dividing centuries between when the Legion and the Exiles of the Hegemony vanished from the collective knowledge of the Inner Sphere.  During that time the Legion and its Special Forces have fought numerous conflicts either openly or through proxies, all the while maintaining the secrecy and security of the home systems.  Every single conflict fought by the Legion has been to maintain the secrecy of the self-imposed exiled star systems.
Two major conflicts and a simmering cold war fill the history of the Legion, along with several small conflicts such as the Withdraw and the Cleansing.  Utilizing equipment not seen since the fall of the Star League or that had once been in the use of Rim Wards forces.

The Withdraw
During the chaos of the defeat of the Amaris Empire, the infighting within the council and the Exodus of the SLDF.  When Com Star launched Operation Silver Shield, the survivors of the Royal Command enacted Project LEGION.  The full withdraw of the surviving Royal Command Structure and a shadow game took place with the split from the SLDF’s Exodus fleet of six fully loaded Potemkin-class Troop Cruisers and scores of Monolith and Star Lord JumpShips loaded with survivors of the Terran Hegemony, the Royal Divisions and other key research and development agencies.
The ships, which split from the Exodus fleet, rallied with other ships thought lost during the Amaris War and salvaged or repaired by Hegemony Loyalists.  Eight additional Potemkin’s along with dozens of other Warships and nearly a hundred JumpShips of various classes all loaded with troops, supplies and families of the Royal Command, Hegemony Research and Development and other critical agencies.  A complete shadow government went into exile with full support of the surviving Hegemony Armed Forces.
After two years the successor Lords had encroached dangerously close to the exile worlds.  Duke Peter Ryan – Protector-General of the Terran Hegemony – ordered several of Project LEGION’s best-equipped formations to delay the advance.  For another eight months fighting on various Hegemony worlds the HAF evacuated millions from key worlds and anywhere where HAF forces were fighting a delaying action.
The Withdraw was complete by 2791, followed by the Cleansing.

The Cleansing
Operation CLEANSING began in the fall of 2793.  With the Great Houses on the march to devour the crumbling Hegemony and Com Star securing the Terran System, Duke Ryan ordered the SAS and other operatives that had remained behind with much of the Royal Command into action.  Launching raids and infiltration missions all across the Inner Sphere the Exiles executed dozens of diplomats, systems administrators and other scientific personnel who refused to disappear with Project LEGION or leave with Operation EXODUS.  In one case, the battle of New Samarkand saw the largest deployment of forces.  Several of the Legion’s Light Horse regiments in support of a Dragoon Regiment executed a raid in force on the Internal Security Collage and the Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy.
The 2ND Royal Dragoons supported by the 10th and 11th Light Horse Regiments raced to the surface to deploy and strike multiple targets across the planet.  The Dragoons sold themselves to protect the mission as the light horse regiments raided the various priority targets removing all trace of the exiled systems from the databases of the Internal Security Forces of the Draconis Combine.  Once a virus was planted in the ISF database it would propagate throughout the ISF only removing the locations of the six star systems, which withdrew from the Inner Sphere.
Various other operations were executed.  The least violent was the appeal to First-Prince John Davion.  Duke Ryan traveled to New Avalon to meet with the Prince and make his request in person.  Duke Ryan met with the Prince having worked together in the past.  He requested that his Hegemony programmers be allowed in the Federated Suns databases to make several worlds disappear from the Suns Charts.  The Prince skeptical at first was granted several concessions by the Duke which to this day have not been revealed, the tight relationship between the Suns and the Legion seems to lead many believe that the secret pact is still being upheld by both parties.  As seen by the 3057 counter attack by the Legion from the abyss, moving from the shadows to hammer back the Capellan and League invasion forces.
All across the Inner Sphere Special Forces teams from the Special Armed Services, Royal Marines and other elite strike teams Cleansed the exiled systems from the databases.

I'm writing the ComStar War which is an addition to the details of the conflict between the Free Worlds League and Com Star with the Legion being a ghostly participate.  There will also be a couple of other conflicts before the coming of the Clans.

Com Star War
In 2837, the Free Worlds League baited Com Star into providing House Liao with intelligence of a hidden Star League cache on Cursa.  When three Confederation regiments of elite troops arrived, Captain-General Charles Marik ordered the orbital bombardment of the Oriente HPG killing 132 civilians and 230 staff including Jeannette Marik the Captain-General’s Sister.  When Com Star ordered the Interdiction of the Free Worlds League, Duchess Tanya Ryan successor to the Duke Peter, ordered the Legion into action.  Communications Command deployed several HPG equipped relay JumpShips along with numerous satellite-based systems in order to provide the Free Worlds League Military with critical Communications services.
The Captain-General was shocked by the arrival of these services not being provided by Com Star and quickly embraced them.  At the same time Legion strike teams raided HPG compounds across the League looking for intelligence and other key data to help penetrate Com Star further.  In one of the few direct military engagements the 1ST Light Horse Regiment clashed with mercenaries under contract with the Lyran Commonwealth while covering a raid on a Com Star HPG compound.
When the conflict was over and the interdiction lifted Charles Marik thanked the Duchess and then informed her that the improvised grid was going to remain as property of the Free Worlds League.  The Duchess laughed and activated her communicator and spoke only two words, “kill it,” those words sent a ripple of HPG transmissions through the network activating self destruct systems or ordering the JumpShip relay systems to return home.  She then informed him that while she had not been completely generous.  But that because he acted the way he did in trying to keep her property he would never receive the help of the Legion as long as he lived and the Marik's and the Free Worlds League had lost the support of the Legion.
During this conflict Legion SAS is dispatched to the Federated Suns launching a campaign of assassination aimed at a cabal of officers who had approached Prime Marshal Peter Davion trying to convince him to overthrow his nephew Prince Michael Davion in reaction to his peace overtures.  The strike teams also secured the Prime Marshal and he “voluntarily” made a public pledge of his loyalty to Prince Michael.  Prince Michael authorized Duchess Ryan to deal with the traitors.
The Legion managed to secure from the Federated Suns the plans for several of their warship designs and the use of one of the few remaining Robinson II transports.  This ship coupled with a dedicated assault ship wing managed to deliver a raiding force to the surface of Dieron to secure several SLDF and HAF data cores and a Hegemony Research base that had been so well hidden that they had remained on planet for the entire time living off of internal resources.  Once secured and all data transferred to the cores stored aboard the cargo ships.  The rest of the facility was cleared out of all prototype and limited production items.  The facility staff and their families who had dutifully remained boarded the Blockade Runners along with all the equipment.  The entire time Legion ground forces blunted attack after attack by local militia and elements of the Fifth Sword of light.  A massive Aerospace BARCAP and the FSS New Ivarssen itself kept the Combine from flooding into the region.
It took two weeks to clean out the facility and begin recovering the BattleMech Battalion aboard cargo shuttles.  Once all the BattleMech’s had been recovered minus a Company of Assault BattleMechs covered the boarding of tracked vehicles and infantry forces back aboard their DropShips.  The 3RD Mechanized Infantry Brigade had begun lifting to rendezvous’ with the New Ivarssen.  The last company of machines boarded Union-class DropShips and lifted for the task force’s return to the Federated Suns.

Just a reminder this are written like Field Manuel fluff.  the story line will take place pre-fourth succession war until Jihad timeline.  just like the Dark Storm Legion stories.  And then from there I will see how things go.  I already have all of the HAF and Legion Military information worked out and now slowly presenting the history as I develop it.  If anyone has anything they want to add or tips feel free.  I am not posting the military information as yet because its all circa 3060'ish.  The back ground is the hardest part.  To give purpose to my modern storyline is a continous problem I have run into over the years with the Mercenary turned nation theme.  besides its been done. well I hope you all comment and give me your tips.  Especially you DragonCat I like your work.

Games of War: Third Succession War
During the later stages of the Third Succession War, with the Great Houses exhausted from the long brutal fighting over the last hundred and fifty years, the Legion stepped in to what the young Duke Michael Ryan hopped would be the push the Inner Sphere would need to end the war.
Beginning with a raid on the Free Worlds League system of Kalidasa under the colors of the Federated Suns, the Legion secured critical war materials for the AFFS delivering them to First Prince Ian Davion.  Two Light Horse Regiments the 10th and 11th arrive with the supplies under the guise of a Mercenary contract and are quickly sent into the fight along the Combine border.  Assisting Davion units’ victory on Harrow’s sun.
In 3012, the Devil Brigade – 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Division – was also deployed although this force was sent in to support Field Marshal Hanse Davion, the prince’s brother in his operations within the Capellan March.  Broken up into three separate Battlegroups, each paired with a unit loyal to Duke Michael Hasek in a move to ensure that they did not hamper operations against the Confederation.
In one case the Fifth Syrtis Fusiliers in their assault on New Argon, attempted to sacrifice the Legion Battlegroup assigned to them.  When Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Wallace realized his orders were suicide he ordered his DropShips to change their attack pattern and executed an orbital drop with his ‘Mech Battalion.  He quickly followed that up with landing jump infantry using assault shuttles before grounding his heavy vehicle transports to deploy armor, mechanized infantry and attack VTOLs.  Once a suitable perimeter was secure on the planet.  The Fifth grounded in a secure perimeter before moving out to engage the planets defenders.  Once the Fusiliers were planet side Colonel Wallace ordered his Battlegroup off New Argon and to return to Brigade Headquarters on Kathil.
With the death of First Prince Ian Davion on Mallory’s world the Devil Brigade along with select AFFS commands returned with Field Marshal Hanse Davion and in 3014 participates in the attack on Halstead Station to recover the remains of a Star League era university.  Again Lieutenant Colonel Wallace and his Battlegroup supported – the now First Prince – Hanse Davion in his raid to secure the relics.  From this he would build the New Avalon Institute of Science two years later.  Duke Ryan would make a significant contribution to the NAIS once completed of other “lost” archives.
In 3018, Cranston Snord’s Irregulars launch a deep penetration raid into the Free Worlds League to recover their museum collect.  Duke Ryan orders the SAS and the elite 1ST Light Horse – the Blackhawks – to deploy along with the Irregulars and establish a command circuit to rush the task force deep into the League.  Providing supporting forces and other heavy lift assets.  The raid took four months from the initial landings on Nathan where they secured a portion of the collection.  From Nathan the task force moved to Holt defeating the garrison and capturing Jason Marik-Torrenson, third cousin to the Captain-General.
After wards the Legion supported the Irregulars with spares and replacements taking possession of part of the collection that was recovered in trust to the Irregulars so that no one would be the wiser as to how they replaced their losses.  In 3020, Cranston Snord approached the Legion through their representatives in the Federated Suns and requested assistance in an assault on McAffe.  Using Legion intelligence and elements of the 1ST Royal CAAN Marine Regiment the Irregulars put ashore behind the fortified defenses and defeated few defenders present behind the heavy gun emplacements and reclaimed another significant portion of their collection before withdrawing to Clinton.
The Legion ended the Third Succession War by providing the Wolf’s Dragoons with a survey of the planet Outreach hinting towards the presence of hidden BattleMech production facilities.

Revelations
In the dawn of the thirty-first century the Legion had slowly begun making their presence known to the Federated Suns then under the leadership of First Prince Ian Davion.  With his death and the assumption of the throne by his younger brother First Prince Hanse Davion – known as the Fox to enemy and friend alike – the Legion had already deployed two regiments of Light Horse and one Brigade Combat Team in support of the Prince’s operations during the Third Succession War masquerading as Mercenaries.
Duke Ryan further backed this deployment up at the start of the Fourth Succession War with two additional brigades.  Both Mechanized Infantry Brigade Combat Teams the Brigades established garrison posts within the Crucis March in order to free up additional combat commands for use against the Capellan Confederation.  All three Brigades were held in place until Com Star placed an interdiction on the Federated Suns, then on order from the First Prince relocated into the Terran Corridor in order to ensure the lines of communication between the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth remained open.
Once in place the Dagger Brigade of 1ST Division joined each of the Infantry Brigades deployed across three planets the Devil Brigade and each Combat Team broke up into Battlegroups and joined the Infantry as they garrisoned each planet.  The Light Horse Regiments once on the Combine Border now patrolled through the Terran Corridor prepared to respond wherever an attack was launched.
With the end of the Fourth Succession War and the return of communications within the Federation, Duke Ryan ordered his troops home to refit.
In 3030, the Duchy of Andurien and the Magistracy of Canopus invaded the Capellan Confederation.  While the invasion was ultimately defeated it was the Legion under orders of Duke Michael Ryan which supplied the Duchy with excess war materials once used to masquerade Legion troops since the fall of the Star League.  Three full regiments of BattleMechs were smuggled to the Duchy and the Magistracy to prepare their troops for the coming war.  Supply dumps were established throughout the region and leaked to the two combatants as they prepared.
The Inner Sphere was becoming aware of the Legion as rumor and tales of advanced war machines and long lost designs were appearing across the Inner Sphere fighting alongside the underdogs in almost every brush war since the end of the Third Succession War.
The Legion had been prepared to fight offensively for centuries; it was a defensive campaign that they were unable to endure.  This was when Duke Michael authorized the expansion of militia command and the reformation of the Hegemony Armed Forces as a potent fighting force.  Duke Michael outlined a force of ten divisions each with two Mechanized infantry Brigade Combat Teams supported by a Jump Infantry Brigade.  The Legion would reform as a BattleMech Corps with three BCTs per division bringing the combat strength to four divisions supported by a dozen independent Battlegroups.
The first test of their resolve came in the War of 3039 when Legion command ordered the 3RD Division forward to hammer DCMS counter attacks and hunt down Com Star supply depots where they were transferring Star League BattleMechs to the DCMS.  In a campaign of rapid dominance the Legion’s 3rd BCT, 3RD Division smashed a Com Star resupply mission on the world of Nirasaki.  With the fighting over and DCMS reinforcements closing in the Legion was forced to leave equipment behind unable to destroy damaged machines the DCMS and Com Star became aware of the Legion’s existence if not its extent.
Time was critical at this point with two hostile powers aware of the Legion’s existence.  Duke Michael would be forced to accelerate the Exiles reintroduction into the Inner Sphere.

Operation WARSPITE
In 3055, General Tom Franks – director of Special Forces Command – ordered the elite 1ST Contingency Action Group (CAG) of the SAS to support a CIA operation on the world of Tharkad in an attempt to prevent an assassination plot against Archon and Regent of the Federated Commonwealth Melissa Steiner-Davion.  Arriving on Tharkad in early May of 3055, the 1ST CAG were infiltrated into palace security by CIA operatives working within the LIC and Loki.  Waiting for nearly a month 1ST CAG team leader Master Sergeant John Marcus discovered explosives hidden within the Archon’s favorite flowers.  The pots had been made of explosives with a liquid absorption timer.  Master Sergeant Marcus removed the explosives replacing the pots with a nonlethal incompasitant.
On June 19TH, the assassin known as Dancing Joker was caught by Marcus’ team attempting to make his escape from Tharkad.  While the Archon failed to live through the night another bomb detonated killing the Archon, Salome Ward-Kell and maiming Morgan Kell.  Master Sergeant Marcus was killed along with two members of his team while transferring the assassin to a CIA black team for transport back to the Hegemony.  The assassin code named Dancing Joker escaped only to be captured by agents loyal to the Archon-Prince and set upon Duke Ryan Steiner.
As 3056 came to a close, Joshua Marik’s condition turned for the worse.  Dying from leukemia, the heir to the Free Worlds League was close to death.  The Archon-Prince at the recommendation of his advisors sent word to Duke Ryan requesting the assistance of Legion medical personnel to save the young Marik.  Duke Michael agreed dispatching a medical DropShip to New Avalon to recover Joshua and return him to Nova California for treatment.
While Joshua was away, Archon-Prince Victor supplanted him with a body double in order to maintain the illusion of Joshua continuing treatment on New Avalon.  Operation Gemini was a failure as agent of SAFE discovered the double and reported Joshua as dead back to Atreus.  Thinking his son was dead, Captain-General Thomas Marik ordered the Free Worlds League Military to launch a punitive operation aimed at recovering the worlds lost during the Fourth Succession War.  Coordinating with the Capellan Confederation the two nations launched Operation Guerrero as it was called in the League.
In September 3057, the FWL attacked six star systems in the first wave of attacks while the Confederation hit Liao with five Warrior House regiments on the same day as hostilities were announced followed up by an invasion of nine systems while throwing eight other systems into open revolt.  At the end of the first wave the FedCom had lost sixteen worlds with Zurich falling to Confederation backed terrorist.
As the first wave came to an end Duke Michael Ryan adopted his titular title of Commanding General of the resurgent Hegemony Armed Forces.  He ordered his divisions forward under the code name Operation WARSPITE.  Three Legion Divisions supported by six HAF Divisions launched into the teeth of the both the League and Confederation.  General Ryan lead operations against the Confederation while General Jeremiah Austin led two entire Corps against the League supported by Admiral Mancuso’s Warships.
Rapid deployment units already in the region pushed in to relieve the 12TH FedCom RCT and the 2ND Republican.  The 10TH and 11TH Light Horse Regiments were quick to act inserting into the system with their Scout-class JumpShips and approaching the planet rapidly.  Once on the ground the regiments deployed from their Colossus-class DropShips moving out to reinforce the defenders.  On Marcus the Black Horse regiment arrived in time to prevent the 12TH’s ‘Mech regiment from committing a suicidal charge into the three advancing regiments.  Breaking free with two surviving battalions of FedCom ‘Mech’s, the Black Horse commander Colonel Mitchell Tanner assumed command after the 12TH’s commander Hauptmann-General Carl Bragg died defending his RCT as they prepared to withdraw.
Colonel Tanner held out with his Light Horse and the surviving FedCom MechWarrior’s they managed to get most of the RCTs conventional forces off planet a regiment of armor and two of infantry remained behind allowing for a brigade of support forces to continue the fight.  Brigadier General Regina Jorgenson led her 22ND Brigade Combat Team arrived escorted by the Assault Transport THS Iwo Jima.  Deploying her brigades BattleMech battalion via orbital drop along with a full company of Battle Armor secured a Drop Zone for the follow-on transports to ground and deploy the remaining ground troops.  Fighting continued for another four days before League commanders ordered a withdraw from Marcus.
On Wasat the 2ND Republican was supported by the Buffalo Soldiers regiment, the 10TH Light Horse fought along side the Republican regiment as they tried to fight off 13TH Marik Militia, 4TH Oriente Hussars and the 2ND Sirian Lancer regiments.  Out numbered and moving deeper and deeper into the planets wilderness the two out numbered regiments were not holding out well with the 10TH losing nearly a quarter of its command and the Republican regiment down to nearly fifty-percent losses.  Brigadier General Gorge Tanaka lead the 41ST Brigade Combat Team to Wasat supported by a Naval Escort Squadron of Assault DropShips ensured the BCT made planet fall.  Fighting flared up as the forces on planet linked up with the 41ST and began active operations against the League forces.  The arrival of the destroyer THS Achilles stopped any hope of the League from reinforcing their troops on Wasat.
All across the crumbling Sarna March HAF forces swarmed in to blunt the losses.  While the Lyran State succeeded from the Federated Commonwealth under the leadership of Katherine Steiner-Davion younger sister and regent to the Lyran state of Archon-Prince Victor.  Duke Michael’s Legion and HAF along with what few FedCom commands survived the invasions and insurgencies are all that remains.  On Liao General Ryan dropped the entire 1ST Division supported by the 2ND Dragoons to crush the Warrior House regiments sent in to take the system.  Once secured Ryan left a Mechanized Infantry Brigade to hold the planet before moving forward to push back the Capellan advance.  All across the March HAF divisions surprised revolts and secured important infrastructure while Legion divisions took the fight to the front line combatants.
By December the conflict had wound down along the front.  In a move aimed at driving home to the League and the Confederation just how committed Duke Ryan was to holding territory he attacked Irain with an entire Corps left out of the fighting.  3RD Legionary Division supported by the 7TH and 8TH HAF divisions under escort of the THS Iowa secured the system and its critical manufacturing centers defeating both the ground forces and forcing the FWLS Menelaus to withdraw from the system.
Along the Capellan front, Duke Ryan led the 1ST Division again supported by the Battlecruiser THS Missouri to capture Capella.  All League and Confederation advances quickly halted followed by the call for a summit on the world of Zion.  Both the Captain-General and Chancellor arrived to meet with Duke Michael.  The Duke proposed a return to pre-war borders with the repatriation of all combatants and their equipment without conditions.  Both leaders were surprised and before the Chancellor could consider his own insurgents still operating within the March, Ryan dropped a bombshell.  He said that the Confederation would recall all of its agents fermenting rebellion within the region or the Legion with the help of the League would conqueror the entire Confederation and hand it over to Duchess Allard-Liao and her Compact.
Thomas Marik was about to deny the claim that the League would do anything such thing when a door opened and in walked Joshua Marik.  Even Sun-Tzu was at a loss for words.  With him was Archon-Prince Victor Steiner-Davion.  He crossed the room and stood before Marik and apologized for the deception.  Joshua was never meant to be thought as dead.  Duke Michael likewise apologized and said that because of his security demands the SAFE protection agents thought Joshua had died when in fact he had been transported to the exiled Hegemony for treatment.  The elder Marik rushed to his son and embraced him.  Turning to his Capellan ally he reinforced the demand that the League would support Duke Michael in punishing the Confederation should the insurgencies continue.
The Treaty of Zion was signed ending the Marik-Liao war with the Federated Commonwealth.  Both the League and the Confederation along with the Federated Commonwealth recognized the authority of the Hegemony to govern and defend the worlds of the former Sarna March until such as a time as a referendum was passed to reform the Terran Hegemony or the two halves of the Commonwealth would be rejoined.  If that would happen the Hegemony Government would step aside and allow the people to rejoin the FedCom linking to two halves and reforming the super state.

RYAN AEROSPACE (Not Traded)
Main Plant Locations:  Eureka Belt (Nova California), LaGrange Point Sierra (Inverness)
   CEO:  Robert Hamilton
Main Products (Scorpio Fleet Yards):  Robinson IIA-, Davion IIA- and Regent-class Warships; Pueblo-, Cargo Master-, Triumph-, Elephant, Longstreet and Colossus-class DropShips; Union- and Lee-series DropShips; numerous small craft
Main Products (Ryan Aerospace Frame):  DropShip and Warship frames

Main Products (Rolls-Royce Engine Corporations):  DropShip and Warship drives and maneuver engines
Main Products (Ryan Aerospace Fleet Maintenance):  DropShip and Warship refit, repair and maintenance
Main Products (Newport News Shipyards):  Lion-, Cargo King-, Triumph- and Longstreet-class DropShips; Lee-series DropShips; Hunter-, Star Lord- and Monolith-class JumpShips

Profile:
Once considered laughable in the eyes of the major Hegemony corporations.  When Ryan Aerospace joined with Hegemony Research and Development in the development and production of the Regent-class Fast Battleships.  These ships are built at the heavily secured Ryan Aerospace of Nova California with in its well-defended Scorpio Fleet Yards.  Other key products include the Pueblo reconnaissance DropShip, along with other high technology based designs like the Cargo Master and Cargo King DropShips, Monolith-class JumpShips and recently with the discovering of the Clan’s and a well executed raid by the SAS the Hunter-class scout JumpShip.
Rivaling the Galax Megaplex in capabilities the Scorpio Fleet Yards are located in the Eureka Asteroid Belt within the Nova California system.  A fortified position consisting of nearly a dozen construction slips component factory stations along with several automated smelters, armor forges, refineries and storehouses.  The entire system was automated from the mining drones to the refineries and then to the smelters to be converted into metals and then off to the forges to be turned into armor, structural composites, and other base materials then delivered to the transshipping storehouse stations where they are sorted and stored to be delivered to the shipyards by drone transports before being received by human workers to be turned into space craft.  The entire process is efficient and only when supplies need to be transported to other systems to support the Newport News Yards do human crews need to be involved.  At that point crewed DropShips will arrive at the stations to receive the cargoes before linking up with JumpShips at the various Jump Points.
With the revelation of the Legion and many questions raised at the quality of the equipment the Legion possesses, the Great Houses have been in a bidding war to purchase excess materials from Ryan Aerospace.  Only the Federated Commonwealth under Archon-Prince Victor Steiner-Davion has begun to receive DropShips and JumpShips from Ryan Aerospace.  As of 3056, ten Lee-class ‘Mech Carriers, twenty-five Heavy Vehicle Transports and a dozen Triumph-class DropShips have been ordered or delivered along with a dozen JumpShips, three Monolith-, six Star Lord- and three Invader-class JumpShips.

Forgotten Treasures: From Shadow To Light
Chronicles of the Legion
Prologue

Castle Black, San Diego
Nova California
Hegemony in Exile
11 August 3057

“I don’t know what the problem is sir, the League build up is none of our concern.”  The gruff old general said from his seat down the table.  “They are massing against the Commonwealth.  Why should we be concerned?”  He asked.
“Because General Reynolds, the League wouldn’t be building up their forces along the border if it wasn’t for us accepting Joshua into our care for treatment.  The Capellans wouldn’t be doing anything against the Commonwealth if it wasn’t for the League building up its forces.”  The man at the head of the table responded.
“You accepted that scab to be treated not I.”  General Reynolds shouted.
“His name is Joshua, I would not turn down the son of a noble as I would not turn down those that are in need in the streets.  You will give him the respect of a name; you will not refer to him as anything less than human General.  Do not forget that.”
“Fine then Michael, what do you suggest we do then?”  Reynolds inquired.
“Mobilize the Legion and the Armed Forces.  I want three Corps ready for deployment.  One Legionary Division paired with two Army Divisions.  Supported it with a pair of independent regiments.”  Michael responded.
“You want a full mobilization of the military?”  Reynolds demanded.
“Yes General, I do.  I also want the Navy to stand ready to support ground operations and interdict reinforcements from reaching their advanced forces.  We will leave the fifth and ninth divisions in reserve within the Hegemony.”  Michael informed the council.
The gathered council members all looked to one another before turning back to their Duke.  General Corbin was the first to speak this time.  “Sire, how far do you want to take this?”
That was the question wasn’t it?  How far am I willing to take this.  Do I want to just support the FedCom in the defense of their realm or do I want to send a message to the Inner Sphere.  We have helped the Davion’s for centuries.  We failed to keep Hanse alive.  We failed Melissa.  I will not fail again.
Duke Michael Edward Ryan Protector of the Hegemony in Exile and Commanding General of the Hegemony Armed Forces stood from his seat at the head of the table and walked around to the massive reinforced window overlooking Castle Black, the Castle Brian for which the Hegemony Armed Forces placed their headquarters.  This decision had weighed on the minds of his family for centuries.  When was it enough?  When should they stop hiding and become members of the Inner Sphere once again.
   “It is time.”  He whispered.
“Excuse me sir?”  Asked Admiral Candice Mancuso from her seat at the table.
Michael turned around from the window and repeated himself.  “It is time.”
The gruff General Reynolds spoke up again.  “Its time for what Michael?”  He chiding as if talking to a child.
“It is time for us to stop hiding.”  Michael said.
“Well, you’ve always wanted to save the universe.  Why not start now?”  Reynolds scathed.
Everyone in the room knew that Reynolds chaffed under the Ryan’s.  He wanted his family to be elevated to the head of the Duchy and to be Commanding General.  He headed the Hegemony Armed Forces and only lacked direct authority over the Legion.
“Shut up Mark.”  Mancuso said from her seat.  “I am tired of hearing your ass.”  She continued staring at him from across the table.  “Every time we meet you continue to belittle Duke Ryan,” she said naming Michael by his title and family name, “you have wanted his position since Duke Patrick chose his own son over his best friend to succeed him as Commanding General before his death.”
Silence descended upon the room before Michael spoke again.  “General Reynolds.  I am sorry to hear of your resignation so soon before a major operation.”
Reynolds was shocked.  “I have not given my resignation!”  He shouted.
“Oh but you have.  You have either given your resignation and will retire to the land I am about to grant you on Inverness or you will be arrested and charged with dissention to the chain of command.”  Michael stated.
“You can’t do this.  Of all the authority you do have you can’t force this on me without a the unanimous vote of the Royal Command.”  Reynolds stammered.
Admiral Mancuso leaned forward and looked around the room.  “I put forward the motion of forced retirement of General Reynolds, Commander of the Hegemony Armed Forces.  Who seconds my motion?”
General Tommy Franks spoke up from his seat.  “I second the motion Admiral.”
“How votes this council?”  General Corbin asked commander of Ground Forces Command, Admiral Mancuso’s earth bound counterpart.
One by one the various heads of the Major Commands, Support Commands and Logistics Commands completely backed the motion put forward by Admiral Mancuso.  Before even the Duke could speak the Admiral stood.
“General Reynolds, you have been relieved of your duties and will report to the guards outside.  Failure to comply will result in your arrest and detention until you and your family have been re-vetted to insure that your release into the civilian sector will not endanger the security of the Hegemony.”
Reynolds looked at her and then around the room before his searching gaze stopped on Michael.  “Sire.”  He began.  “Michael, I served your father faithfully for decades and you for the last fifteen.  You cannot simply remove me like some common foot Soldier.”
Michael spoke as he turned around to face his fathers’ long time friend.  “It is only your service to my Father and our people for which I wont have you imprisoned for your actions here today.  Take your retirement or take your court marshal Alec.  Your choice.  You are not dead to me, you are still family but you have gone to far.  It was not I who put the motion forward; you must have burned a lot of bridges to get this vote so quickly.  I have the power to override it but I wont.  I hope you enjoy your retirement my friend.”
Reynolds looked around one last time, nodded, stood and left the room.
As the door hissed closed behind him Michael looked around the room.  “I do not want anyone speaking badly of General Reynolds.  However things turned out and his attitude towards the end he served well and left with honor.”  Michael waited until everyone in the room agreed with him.  “Now, I want three Corps formed, one Legion Division, two Army Divisions and a pair of independent regiments.”  He said looking at General Corbin.
   “Yes sir.”  Corbin responded
“Admiral, I want a Battlegroup formed to support each Corps.  They will not be tied to the Corps commander but will operate within their Operations Area and can be called in for support.  The Corps will have Naval Escort Squadrons to support any landings if needed.”  Michael continued.
   “Yes sire.”  Mancuso agreed.

Not yet going to write a couple of the stories first.  Then I will go back and do the Cold War between ComStar and the Hegemony.  I'm no Tom Clancy with Spec Ops or Intel Operations so if anyone likes the universe and the way its going once I develop it a little more then feel free to add on.

I am :) And that is a HUGE force that stayed behind.  I'd guess thats why by 3057 there seems to be nothing Clan shaped popping up.

Well honestly most of the Legion up until the end of the 3rd SW is just twelve 'Mech regiments strong. Each of the HAF Brigades only number a battalion each so a full Regiment per Division. Yes there are quite a lot of conventional forces but most of it has been established end of 3SW. The Legion only began as a smattering of regiments and Brigades and in one case a full Jump Infantry Division. The independent regiments are not full BattleMech regiments as an entire Light Horse Regiment can be carried aboard a single Colossus and is noticeable short of air support. There are a pair of Dragoon regiments hiding out there but those are more of a pair of Legion Battlegroups paired up.

I will be releasing a full 3062-3 TO&E along with more of the organizational elements. The fleet is smaller than the FWL and ComStar but has a lot of mothballed resources as well.

Chapter One

THS Terra, Sarna Orbit
Sarna March
Federated Commonwealth
03 January 3058

The THS Terra floated in orbit high above the world of Sarna.  It had been just over a week since the treaty of Zion had been signed.  Commanding General, Duke Michael Ryan watched the world spin below as he sat on the couch of his on board office aboard the Terra.  The door chime sounded drawing the Duke from his reverence.
“Enter.”  He called.  The computer captured the command in reference to the chime, converted it to a digital signal and activated the locking system on the door opening the hatch.
In stepped two officers.  One, Major General Yolanda MacTaggert his chief of staff and the other Brigadier General Timothy Taylor, the staff intelligence officer.  That caused Michael’s eyebrow to rise.
“What do you have Mac?”  Michael asked.
“Sire, General Taylor has critic traffic for you from INTCOM.”  MacTaggert informed the Commanding General.
“Well, what do you have for me Taylor?”
“Sir, INTCOM sent a priority HPG to us here informing us of rumblings they are picking up concerning all of those Word of Blake troop movements we have been getting sniffs of.”  He began and walked around to face his Duke.  “What we have now is confirmation of a contract between the 21ST Centauri Lancers and Com Star to garrison Terra alongside the Terran Defense Force.
“What we didn’t know of until now was that the Word of Blake captured the Lancers’ dependents and forced the regiment to keep quiet while the Word of Blake infiltrates a Division onto Terra.”  He reported.
“When are they expected on station?”  Michael asked.
“That’s the thing sir.  They are on approach to Terra now.  They are in system and burning in.”  Taylor stated deadpan.  “We are detecting movement of more Blakist forces towards Terra and the two Com Guard fleet bases.”
That had Michael springing to his feat and heading to his workstation.  “Who do we have closest to Terra?”  He demanded once he keyed the direct link to the flag deck.
MacTaggert was faster.  “1ST BCT, 1ST Division along with a Battlegroup from Special Forces Command is the closest.  The rest of 1ST Division and the 10TH Army Division can follow on within a day or so.  We might be able to get a Light Horse regiment there faster but that depends on the state of repair they are in.  But we can have troops in the system in a week and boots on ground within ten days from the word go.
Michael thought about the situation for a minute before asking.  “What of Com Stars response if any?”
“Nothing, they don’t even know what is happening.  If you choose to warn Com Star I think that would be a bad move sir.  Com Star is riddled with Blakist informants and their ROM is so penetrated by the fanatics that any warning would have to be hand delivered to Focht and then he has to act without tipping anyone off.”  She said.
“You’re right Mac.  The word is given, Get General Reynolds troops moving.  Give them everything they need and get Mancuso to cut loose escorts.  Tell them to get us our home back.”  Michael ordered.
“Yes sir.”  Both officers chimed at once.
“Also I want the Lancers dependents located and rescued.  They do not deserve to be caught up in this.”  Ryan looked across the void of stars past Sarna and deep into the black.  “I will not let some fanatics of a lunatic’s misinterpreted journals bring fighting to the cradle of humanity again.  We couldn’t stop Amaris, we couldn’t stop Blake but by god we will stop them now.”
“Yes sir.”  Both MacTaggert and Taylor acknowledged in unison.

Com Guard Garrison
Tukayyid
Free Rasalhague Republic

The holo tank showed the battle raging between the Com Guard’s 278TH Division – the Khan Killers – and the Draconis Combine’s 1ST Genyosha Regiment.  The gathered personnel watched the battle recording everything and writing reports for later review.  In the center of it all a small cluster of men watched the battle with anticipation.  The first was a man dressed in a simple white robe in the company of four others.  The first a gruff man of Nordic decent wearing the leathers of a Clan Wolf warrior, another of Asian heritage watched intently as his master led the Genyosha fought hard against the Guardsmen.  The last a of the group, a squat blonde haired man watched intently as his friend’s Daishi was dropped by a star of heavies from the Guardsmen.
“Looks like Hohiro should have remembered that the 278TH was not fighting according to zellbrigen, qauiff?”  Star Captain Ragnar asked.
“Neg Star Captain, he saw the flankers using Inner Sphere tactics but his troops were already committed.”  The white robed man spoke.  “He simply trusted his battalion commanders to react and redeploy.  I feel that even though the young Tai-sa has ben taken out the battle will be a draw.”
“Precentor-Martial,” The Combine officer begun “Hohiro’san sacrificed himself and his lance to ensure the rest of the Genyosha would have a chance to survive.  He would however not have made that sacrifice in vain.”
“Tai-sa Yodama’san, I have no doubt in my mind that you are correct in this conclusion.”  Prcentor-Martial Focht said.
“Shin, we all know Hohiro is not a traditionalist.  He wouldn’t sacrifice himself unless it saved his men.  Hohiro knows how to fight and could have pulled back but his sacrifice allowed two of his Battalions to link up and begin a fighting withdraw while the third pushed into the Com Guards breaking them up.”  The blonde man stated.
“Hai Victor’san, he would not commit suicide.”  Tai-sa Yodama agreed with the Archon-Prince.
They all watched as the battle drew to a close.  Tai-sa Hohiro Kurita, prince and heir to the throne of the Draconis Combine walked into the command center to the applause of those gathered around.
“I do not know why you applauded a dead man.”  He quipped.
“Because Hohiro, you have done what none of us could.  You tied with the Khan Killers.”  Victor said.  “Besides you looked a lot better dying under the guns of Demi-Precentor Burketon than I did old friend.”  He chided.
A Com Star Adept entered the room and rushed towards the Precentor-Martial.  The Adept handed him a pad and Victor watched as he read it.  “Is this confirmed?”
   “No Precentor-Martial.”  The Adept responded.
“Quick as you can confirm this with our trusted people.”  He said under his breath.  Then he turned to the others.
“What is wrong Precentor-Martial?”  Asked Victor.
“Would you happen to know why a Legion Division and elements of another are surging towards Terra at this very moment?”  Focht inquired.
Victor and the others were shocked.  “I don’t even know why they came out of hiding in the first place.  They also had a lot more troops then my Father or anyone before him knew.”
“Are they that brazen or capable of tacking Terra?”  Focht asked.
“I don’t know.  They could be doing a number of things but invading Terra?  I don’t know Anastasius.”  Victor mused.  “What are you going to do about it?”
“I am going to alert the Terran Defense Force and Precentor Koeings-Cober to start.  Then I am going to plan a counter attack should that fail.”  Focht stated.
“I cannot help you in a fight against the Legion.  We owe them to much to intervene openly.”  Victor stated flatly.  “However I am going to mobilize reinforcements for the Sarna March and deploy forward some of our Warships to help stabilize the region.”

1ST Dragoons HQ FWD
Keid, Sarna March
Federated Commonwealth

Colonel Bianca Mathews sat in her office looking over readiness reports when Lieutenant Colonel Tomlinson her Executive Officer burst through the door waiving a pad at her.
“Mathews, critic traffic from command.  Signed Legion 6.”  Tomlinson fairly shouted.
Mathews dropped the stylus and sat straight in her field chair as Tomlinson walked up to her.  “I trust this has been decoded and authenticated?”  She asked after rereading the message for the second time.
“Twice, and yes we sent a message asking for confirmation.”  Tomlinson said.
Mathews stood and stepped into the Tactical Operations Center (TOC) and began shouting orders to the Battle Captain.  “Captain Miller, get the heads of all the S-Shops, the Battalion Commanders and the Naval Liaison in here now.  We have a briefing in thirty minutes.”
“Yes ma’am.”  The young staff officer responded.  Turning himself and began issuing orders to his Command Post team as they began activating communications links and summoning everyone in question.

Thirty minutes later the last of the staff was arriving having been in the capital working with the local government.  “Lets begin the briefing Ladies and Gentlemen.”  Mathews ordered.
Colonel Mathews walked to the head of the table sitting down at her place as commander of the Black Hawks.  “We have been ordered to embark aboard our DropShips and rendezvous with JumpShips charging their drives at a pirate point only a few hours transit from orbit.  I want to know is go no-go from you all for recalling your troops and being ready to lift in six hours.”  She saw the looks on their faces as she just expected them to recall troops spread across the planet, suppressing insurgents and conducting humanitarian assistance missions.
“Colonel,” one of her Battalion commanders spoke up “my battalion alone is spread across an entire continent supported by the 173RD Jump Infantry Brigade.  How am I supposed to regroup and make the time line without extra DropShips?”
“You are going to have the support of the 173RD as they are recovering your BattleMechs with Chinooks and making linkup with the Pinto.  The orders have already gone out via General Smith and he is giving us priority on everything.”  Mathews reported.
“Then if they can make linkup I can be ready.”  Major Joachim reported.
“My entire Battlegroup is centrally located.  I can be aboard DropShips in three hours a little longer if we don’t get everyone aboard the right DropShips.”  Major Rodriguez reported.
“My Squadron is ready to go we can make link up in orbit while our equipment will be loaded aboard the Painted Horse as soon as we leave here.”  Major Sanders reported from her position on the right of the table.
Each had reported their status and now it was Mathew’s turn.  “We received orders from Legion 6 to make for Terra with all due haste.  Word of Blake Forces are already in the system disguised as the 21ST Centauri Lancers.  They will make planet-fall soon and take up garrison at Bowling Green, Kentucky.  Com Star is worried about the Clans and the battle of Coventry raging in the Lyran Alliance.  They are unaware of the presence of what is in essence a Word of Blake Division already on Terra unopposed.”
She moved around the table to a holo imager as it flared to life showing Terra and more specifically the North American continent.  “The Black Hawks have the privilege of being some of the first troops in.  We are to reinforce the 201ST Com Guard Division at Salina Kansas.  Should we arrive and fighting already have broken out we are to split our forces delivering a Battlegroup to reinforce the 201ST and another to defend Hilton Head, the Com Star First Circuit.
“The 173RD Jump Infantry Brigade will be going with us to act as a mobile reserve able to drop anywhere we need them.  This is not a drill or training exercise people.  We are going home and we are going spoiling for a fight.”

Chapter Two

DropShip Shangri-La
(WoBS Guiding Light)
Orbital Approach, Terra
Terran System, Com Star
06 January 3058

“Precentor, Terran Traffic Control has cleared our approach in to Bowling Green.”  The ships Captain reported.
Precentor Suzanne Mulvanery looked up from the pad she was reviewing.  “Roger Captain Stanish.”  She said stressing his rank.  Adept Bryan Stanish was a good man and a capable spacer but he needed to think like something other than a believer or this would end quickly.
“Yes Colonel.”  He clarified.  “My apologies.”
“It’s quite alright Captain, just be mindful of what you say.  Inform Terran Approach that the Lancers thank them and will begin entering the landing pattern for North American as soon as we receive approach guidance.”
“Aye Ma’am.”  Stanish replied before terminating the intercom.
Precentor Mulvanery moved to the port hole and looked out onto the world she had once lived upon when she trained to be a Com Guardsmen before the schism between thee secular Com Star and the believers of the Word of Blake.
The Word of Blake will stand on Terra once more. Otherwise, I and every one in my division will be She thought to herself.
The “Shangri-La” began shaking, buffeted by the turbulence of atmospheric reentry.  “I’m home…”

201ST Division Headquarters
Salina, Kansas
North America, Terra

Precentor Lisa Koenigs-Cober sat at her desk in the bases command building looking over both Com Guard and TerraSec status reports.   She had a lot of work to do.  Terra was vulnerable; it would take a significant force to defend the cradle of Humanity.  The Word of Blake had enough troops to take and hold Terra and that was just with the defectors.  Saying nothing of those who may have joined the zealots after the schism.
A chime sounded from her desktop communicator drawing the young commander from her contemplations.  “Yes.”  She said.
“Precentor, the 21st Centauri Lancers are entering the approach pattern for Bowling Green now.  They will be all on the ground within the next three hours.”  The Acolyte working in the communications center reported.
“Thank you Acolyte.  Please inform Hilton Head of the news as well.”  Koenigs-Cober ordered.
“As you wish Precentor.”  The young Guardsmen responded terminating the connection.
Koenigs-Cober stood from her desk and walked to the Ferro-glass window overlooking the Salina military base.  Capable of housing a full Division of Com Guardsmen itself saying nothing of the ancient base near Manhattan and Junction Cities – Fort Riley.  That could take another two Com Guard Divisions.  Bowling Green Kentucky, ten hours away by ground car was designed similarly.  Able to hold a full Com Guard Division while located between two other ancient military instillations, Fort Campbell able to hold a Star League Jump Infantry Division and Fort Knox able to take in a full brigade or two.
Oh why had the Star League fallen to the wolves at its doors so easily?  How much different could things have been if some form of the single greatest unifying government have continued to exist today.   She continued to contemplate as she walked back around to her chair behind her desk.  Now that would be something I could get behind.

LSS Mystic
Cis-lunar Space, Terra
Terran System

The Pueblo-class Legion Surveillance Ship Mystic watched and recorded the approaching Shadow Lancer DropShips and began warming up its HPG transmitter.  The Mystic had been originally assigned to watch the Terran System for signs of Com Guard reinforcements and to ensure that hidden stockpiles of Hegemony Equipment remained out of Com Star and now Word of Blake hands and safely within those of the Belters where they would keep it safe for the Legion.
The ship fired its maneuvering thrusters turning its belly away from Terra and unmasking the HPG array from the relay satellite located in another system placed there to relay to Legion Command.  With a quick burst of counter rotational thrust the ship halted in position.  The Hyper-Pulse Generator spun up and funneled all of its energy through the ship based mobile system blending with the information packets being assembled by the ships computer and fired nearly twenty-two light years away to the waiting satellite where it was relayed to HAF command.
Once the message had been sent the ship retracted the array and fired maneuvering thrusters to realign the ship along its course of drift as it approached Terra for its standard cargo run.
As the ship approached Terra over the next few hours the ship opened one of its modified cargo bays and prepared to deploy an SAS team down to Terra to begin marking Landing Zones for follow on Legion forces.
Captain Marius Winslow watched as the two insertion craft cleared the small craft bay and began their stealth approach to Terra.  The trip would take the Legion SAS Squads nearly sixteen hours to complete in order to remain undetected.  Once in position the two small craft would open their bays and begin dropping orbital insertion pods built specially for the SAS.  Each carrying a Night Hawk XXIV SOPMOD powered armored equipped commando and deploying their seven man squads across the North American and European Continents.  Two full Platoons of 21 troopers would begin the war against the Word of Blake before any major forces ever entered the same system as one another.
With the transports away he ordered his ship to begin its cargo run into Ontario before anyone became suspicious of the ships intentions.

CIA Safe House
Langley, Virginia
North America, Terra

Joanna watched the squirrel make its way across the yard cautiously making its way to the large oak tree, which dominated the modest back yard.  Her “Husband” was at work today, a normal Thursday morning.  The husband and wife team had been operating on Terra for the last nine years having replaced a couple and their family whom had lived in the same Safe House.
This safe house and dozens others located all across the globe have been in use by the Hegemony-in-Exile since Com Star had taken over the system.  Central Intelligence case officers had been successful in infiltrating numerous echelons of the Terran Government under Com Star.
Joanna heard the chirp of an incoming fax message in her earwig.  Getting up and walking into the house she made her way to the study and activated a series of jamming systems before picking up the house communicator’s handset and keying in a series of numbers.  A wall slid back and a path into the ground was revealed.  She entered the facility buried under the house making her way through the winding corridors and reinforced bulkheads that made up the bunker once known as the Farm.
She entered the secured room that contained the houses communications equipment.  A very non-descript device with a in descript flashing indicator sat on a table by itself.  Joanna walked up to it and pressed the flashing indicator activating the device and begun downloading the message to the Tap Dance system, the CIA’s primary encryption system.  Joanna waited the few minutes for the system to finish its process and print out a hard copy of the information on a water-soluble paper.
“Well, well.”  She said after reading the paper.  She leaned over and picked up a communicator handset programmed to relay through the household system.  She dialed in the code to her “Husbands” mobile unit.  Waiting for a few moments he picked up.  “Rick, how is your day going?”  She asked alerting him that this call was anything but just a bored housewife calling to check on her husband at work.  “No, no emergency.  I just miss you and think we should plan for party, maybe have some house guests over?”

“No, no emergency.  I just miss you and think we should plan for a party, maybe have some house guests over?”  Joanna said over the link.
Rick froze.  He had not expected to hear that combination of code words in his entire rotation on Terra.  “Are you sure you want to plan something like that this soon?”  He asked hoping he had some time before things kicked off.
“Well I already got several RSVP’s from friends who are on their way.  They asked if they could drop by if they were in the area.”  Joanna said over their communicator.  They were talking on the planetary net.  One Rick and Joanna knew was monitored by ROM so they couldn’t use any encryption otherwise ROM would zero in on their conversation and begin tracing the call to both locations.  It was actually safer to talk in the clear in situations like this.
“Well I guess we don’t have much of a choice.  I guess you should go ahead and prep the guest rooms for company then.  I will be home in a bit looks like it could be an early day for us here anyways.”  Rick said.
“Ok honey, see you soon.”  Joanna responded before cutting the connection.
Rick left his office reviewing the Tactical Response Force equipment he had under his command.  Moving down the hall towards the Demi-Precentors’ office.  “Demi-Precentor, we got anything else on the board for today?  I’ve already finished reviewing my troopers status and it will be in your box in a few minutes.”
Demi-Precentor Carlos Benavides looked up from his terminal at Adept Rick Thompson his Beta Level II commander.  “No, nothing on the board as of now.  Just those training exercises with the 201ST and the Lancers after they get settled in.  What’s up?”  He asked.  While not members of the Com Guard or Com Star they did receive training and some funding from the Stellar Communications organization.  Each TerraSec Division was spread over a swath of land.  North America possessed four full Divisions if they ever were activated and rallied.  Most are normal police while two Level III’s out of each division were dedicated to Tactical missions.  The other four Level III’s would operate as conventional SWAT or light infantry to help secure cities while the two more mobile battalions would operate a mixed force of BattleMechs, medium tanks and mechanized and jump infantry supported by VTOLs.
Rick looked at his commander for a moment before responding.  “The wife seems to have planned a get together with friends without telling me.  Going to have to go pick up some things before they show up.”
“Ha!”  Carlos laughed.  “Tell Joanna I said hi then.  Your people going to be ready for field exercises?”
“Yes sir, they are.  I think we will be a convincing aggressor force for the Lancers.”  Rick said not knowing how true that statement might prove to be true.

Chapter Three

THS Tarawa
Keid, Hegemony Protectorate
Federated Commonwealth
27 February 3058

Colonel Bianca Mathews stood at the podium to the Assault Transport Tarawa’s mission briefing room.  Assembled were all of the Battalion, Regimental and Brigade Commanders involved in the first wave.   Brigadier General Michael Foster commanded the 173RD Jump Infantry Brigade and would have technically been in command of the mission.  He would act as the overall strategic commander until Major General John Murray commander of the 3RD Division arrived to take command of operations.  Colonel Bianca Mathews being the more experienced combat commander would act as the mission commander and General Murray the Task Force commander and would coordinate the reserve force.
“Good morning people, in twelve hours we will launch a counter invasion of the Terran System ahead of the 3RD Division and further follow-on forces.”  Mathews began.  “General Murray and I have discussed the concept of operations and agree that the 1ST Dragoons will make for the North American continent to reinforce Alpha and Beta Battalions of the 201ST Com Guard Division.  7TH Light Horse under Colonel Wilder will be prepared to reinforce the European Theater of Operations.”
Brigadier General John Murray stood from his seat and relieved Mathews to continue where she left off.  “Thank you Colonel, alright people.  With the exception of Colonel Henry’s Battlegroup, the rest of the Brigade will be on call to respond globally.  Colonel Henry’s Battlegroup based off of the 503RD Jump Infantry Regiment supported by Captain Tomlinson’s BattleMech Company, an Attack Recon Troop from the 91ST Cavalry and two Batteries of artillery one of Air Mobile Guns and another of Air Defense vehicles.”
He looked around the room gaining the attention of all present.  “Colonel Henry’s force will be responsible for securing Hilton Head and reinforcing the Primus’ Body Guard.”  Murray stated.  Several were shocked that we would go this far towards protecting Com Star.  “I know some of you are wondering why we have chosen this course of action.  Well there are three reasons for this.  First we don’t want a three-way fight on the surface.  Second it will give us much-needed infrastructure on the ground when we need it. Finally third, since the schism the secular Com Star has been trying to prove to the Inner Sphere that they are not up to their old ways.  The Word of Blake is the old Com Star on steroids.”  The commanders gathered all agreed with the assessment.
General Murray went to sit down and was replaced by Commodore Nathanial Banks captain of the Tarawa.  “Commodore Banks, THS Tarawa.”  He said on introduction.  “I will be responsible for entry and approach to Terra for this operation.  The Tarawa will have 173RD aboard along with the 2-5TH Marine Infantry Battalion all ready to respond as needed once we execute the drop of the 503RD.”  He briefed.  “Command has managed to get us a Naval Escort Squadron and we are now being renamed to the 1ST Assault Transport Group.  We will jump in here.”  Banks said as he pointed to a location on the holographic map.
“Once the initial space is clear we will bring in the remaining transports and begin our approach to Terra.  Once the initial drop has been completed fighters from the Tarawa will join with the fighters from the Naval Escort Squadron to establish as much as a Barrier Combat Air Patrol as possible to keep Blakist reinforcements from reaching the surface.”  Banks ended.
Mathews took her place at the podium once more.  “Everyone has their assignments I suggest you go over them once more and hit on any last minute details before we jump.  I want finale status updates at T- 1 hour.”  With that the commanders all exited the briefing room and headed to the small craft bays for the trip back to their ships.

Terran Central Traffic Control
McKinley Station, Terran Orbit
Terran System
28 February 3058

It was another boring day for Adept Cynthia Mountbatten as she commanded her shift in the Terran CTC.  With the systems ability to feed itself there was not much interstellar traffic.  What interstellar traffic there was on the other hand was selected imports for luxury items and Com Star supply ships returning from their far-off routes.
“Just once I would like something to happen.”  Acolyte Hayaki Nakamura said breaking Cynthia out of here trance.  She had lost focus and was staring out into space through the window watching the stars.
“If anything happened Nakamura, I assure you we wouldn’t live through it.”  Mountbatten replied after gaining her composure.
“Oh come on, the Com Guard and the rest of the Defense Forces can keep things safe and we can get to the life boats before anything happens to this station.”  Hayaki continued.
“Oh I doubt it.  Lets just hope...” She trailed off as the proximity alert began going off.  “We have an emergence buildup in vicitinity of…” She paused as she looked triangulated the source from the various sensor satellites located around Terra.  “We have point source location at the Terra – Luna L2 LaGrange point.”
Nakamura activated the hyper spectral imager focusing it on the location watching the buildup of thermal radiation preceding the arrival of a JumpShip.  “I have the imager on those coordinates.”  He reported.
Mountbatten activated the stations laser transmitter pointing the array at Hilton Head.  “Aerospace defense command this is CTC we have a pending unscheduled arrival at the Terra – Luna L2.  Request elevation of alert level launch of alert interceptors.”
“CTC, this is ADC.  Launch authority granted threat level raised, scrambling further assets.  Request identification of arrivals ASAP.”  The duty officer at the Terran based command center reported.
“Roger ADC, we are scrambling alert fighters.”  Mountbatten acknowledged.
“Adept, we have an emergence wave.”  Nakamura reported.
“Standby ADC, we have an emergence wave.”  Mountbatten reported.  By now she thought the alert was spreading around the planet and soon would be beamed across the system by HPG to Mars, Venus and Titan.
The shape began to appear on imager.  “Blake’s blood.”  Nakamura whispered.
“What is it?”  Mountbatten asked as she turned to look at his screen.  Then she saw it.  “ADC scramble everything, we have a warship inbound and what looks like several fully loaded Star Lord JumpShips.  War book says the warship is a Robinson-class transport.”
There was a pause on the link with Aerospace Defense Command.  “Confirmed CTC, we are watching your feed now and confirm your war book’s assessment.  TDF is being alerted prepare yourselves.”

CSS Golden Light
Atmospheric Flight
North America, Terra

Precentor Lisa Koenigs-Cober sat in the ready room aboard the Golden Light her personnel DropShip.  She was looking over the readiness reports of the 21ST Centuari Lancers based off of the assessment of Demi-Precentor Reginald Albertson her XO and Alpha Battalion commander in the 201ST.  The Klaxon sounded and the ships captain came over the overhead speakers.  “Battle Stations, Battle Stations, all hands man your Battle Stations.  Launch fighters and all MechWarrior’s to your BattleMechs.”
Without thinking Lisa was on her feet and running to the bridge.  As she crossed through the hatch leading onto the bridge the captain was already briefing her.  “Precentor, we have reports of an in bound invasion force.  Looks to be a few dozen DropShips escorted by a warship.”
Lisa had known Adept VII-Xi Paul Turner since assuming command of the 201ST and the TDF.  Assigned from Com Star’s Periphery fleet.  “What kind of Warship Paul?”  She asked.
“That’s the thing, it’s a Robinson from what CTC has reported.”  Turner said.  “We lit off all of our sensors and have manned the weapons.”  Right then a loud twang sounded along with a massive vibration followed by a second.  “And we have just launched our fighters.”
Before Lisa could comment the sensor operator spoke up from his station.  “Captain, we have a lance of fighters coming out of the storm to our north.  They have targeting systems painting us and look to be on an attack approach.”
   “Who are they?”  Lisa demanded.
The young Acolyte without looking at his instruments reported.  “They are squawking Lancer IFF codes Precentor.”
“Do they see our escorts?”  Turner spoke up.
“No sir I don’t believe they do.”
“Tell our fighters to work in behind them and warn off the Lancer fighters.”
Lisa looked to Turner.  “I’m going to my ‘Mech, get us back to Hilton Head.”
   “Yes Ma’am.”  Turner replied.

The two RGU-133LP Rouge fighters stalked the Lancer fighters as they raced in on the Golden Light.  Acolyte VII-Pi Roman Garcia watched his HUD looking for the Lancer fighters on a blatant attack profile.  Garcia was monitoring the guard frequency that all aircraft in the Inner Sphere were required to monitor.
“Lancer flight, Lancer flight, this is the Golden Light you are on an attack vector and are ordered to stand off and return to base by order of Precentor Koenigs-Cober.  Terra is under an Invasion alert we have Warships in local space on approach.”  Turner ordered as the Lancer fighters approached.
Garcia noticed there was no change in the approach of the Lancer fighters.  Garcia adjusted his angle on the Lancer fighters bringing himself and his wingman’s fighters around for an optimal attack angle.
“Lancer flight, this is your finale warning.  Return to Bowling Green or you will be considered hostile and fired upon.”  Turner ordered again.
Garcia watched as the Lancer fighters increased speed the two Lightning fighters streaked in on the Golden Light.  Garcia armed his fighter’s weapons knowing his wingman – Trevor Voss – had already done the same.
“Gold-2, this is Golden Light.  You are cleared to engage Lancer fighters.  Be advised we will be maneuvering and engaging ourselves.”  Turner reported.
“Golden Light, this is Gold-2.  Confirmed that we are weapons free and moving to engage.  Gold-2 out.”  Garcia said breaking radio silence and switching over to his link with Voss.  “3, this is 2.  We are cleared to engage we will target the trail fighter first.  Be advised Golden Light will be weapons free and maneuvering.”
Voss loosed up formation on Garcia’s wing.  “Roger 2, copy weapons free.”
Garcia focused on targeting the trail fighter leaving the lead Lightning to the Golden Light.  He watched his targeting reticle until it flashed red.  As he watched the range close the reticle went from red to amber and Garcia caressed the primary target interlock firing his paired Large Pulse Lasers in the wings.  The lasers flashed out and impacted the trail fighter flashing metal into liquid slag.  Garcia smiled to himself as he fired again.  More metal turned to slag and dripped off the Lancer fighter.  Then he was in range of his Medium Pulse Lasers.  Again he selected his secondary target interlock, watched the flashing reticle turn from red to amber and fired.  The pair of medium pulse lasers tore into the Lightning engines exhaust port.  The fighter sputtered and then fell out of the sky.
Garcia smiled to himself and tallied one kill in his head and was interrupted when his fighter shook from laser impacts of its own.  “3, this is 2 what just hit me?”  Garcia demanded to know.
“By the Word of Blake, you heretics will no longer contaminate this holy world any longer.”  Voss said.
“What are you saying get up here and help me deal with this remaining Lancer.”  Garcia ordered.
“I am going to deal with your treasonous actions Garcia.  You will no longer defend that heretic and the corrupted.  The only true Com Star is in the Word of Blake!”   He shouted into the link between the fighters.
Garcia jinked avoiding a burst of his wingman’s pulse lasers.  Switching channels he hailed the Turner.  “Golden Light this is Gold-2, we have a situation.  Gold-3 has gone rouge.  He has fired upon me and began spewing some mantra about heretics.  I think he’s a Blakist mole.”
The channel was open and he could hear impacts of autocannon fire against his hull from the remaining Lightning.  “Garcia, we just received word that Salina was hit by fuel air bombs.  The Lancers have gone rouge across the board.  It is my opinion and that of the Precentor that the Word of Blake is invading and the Lancers are in their employ.  Do what you can to cover us we are going to drop the Precentor and her escorts as soon as we can shake this fighter.”
“Roger sir, I will do what I can.”  He continued to jink, dive and climb to avoid fire from his renegade wingman.  “Alright Voss its time to deal with your traitorous ass.” He said over their shared link.
Maneuvering his fighter he brought his fighter back at Voss firing all of his weapons in his tertiary firing circuit.  He washed his four pulse lasers across his former wingman’s cockpit slagging a lot of the Ferro-glass and armor protecting the pilot.  Voss angled his fighter up and into Garcia’s path.
“For Blake!” He screamed into the link slamming his fighter into Garcia’s as he tried to maneuver clear.

“Sir, Gold-2 and 3 are down.  They collided.” His sensor operator reported.
Turner shook his head, whispered a quick prayer to watch over Garcia and his family then turned his attention to the remaining Lancer.  “Clear my sky guns.”  He ordered.
“Aye sir.”  The weapons officer reported.
The Golden Light, Leopard-class DropShip banked hard bringing its dorsal turret onto the remaining Lancer fighter.  The gunner opened up damaging control surfaces before targeting the ship with its Long Range Missile Launchers.  The volley of Artimes IV guided missiles streaked in on the Lancer fighter blotting it out of the sky.
“Last fighter is destroyed.  The sky is clear sir.”  Guns reported somberly.
Sensors took that moment to speak up.  “Sir, more fighters are coming up from Bowling Green.  We have another squadron inbound.”
Turner turned to his control panel and activated his link to the Lisa strapped into her BattleMech.  “Precentor, its now or never.”
“I understand Paul.  I hope Garcia didn’t die for nothing.  Lets get my people on the ground and then you run.  Head for orbit and get to the defense stations.”  She ordered.
   “Yes Ma’am.”  Turner replied.

THS Painted Horse
Orbital Assault Vector
Terra, Terran System

Colonel Bianca Mathews sat strapped in to the cockpit of her IMP-1A Imp, double and triple checking her systems.  She had been sealed in her BattleMech since before the jump into Terran Space.  She was watching the feed from the Painted Horse’s sensors.  Colonel Mathews was well aware of the swarm of aerospace fighters rushing up to meet them from the planets surface and from orbital stations.  Soon General Murray would be addressing the system as to the purpose of our arrival.
“Colonel, fifteen minutes until we are in drop position.  Com Star Aerospace fighters five minutes until they shoot us out of the sky.”  The voice of the ships captain reported.
“Thank you Captain Garza, I will keep that in mind.  Now if you would please.  Patch me into the fleet COMNET.”  Mathews ordered.
“As you wish Ma’am.”  Captain Garza said laughing.
It took a moment before Mathews began hearing the chatter between the DropShips, escorting fighters and the Tarawa herself as she coordinated the flotilla bound for Terra.  A loud tone sounded and Mathews could tell she was being switched to the guard net as Murray began his broadcast.
“Attention all Com Star personnel and Citizens of Terra.  A grave situation is upon you at this time.  Word of Blake ground forces have infiltrated you.  Already they are on the move from their bases at Bowling Green Kentucky.  Already have they tried to kill Precentor Koenigs-Cober.  We have been monitoring your communications and have been trying to get here before these Shadow Lancers were able to arrive in the first place.  Alas we are too late.  Fighting has already begun on your world.  Fighting I hope we can bring to a quick close.  The 21ST Centuari Lancers are not on your world.  Their dependents have been captured and the Lancers blackmailed into staying quiet.
“In ten minutes the decedents of the Terran Hegemony-in-Exile will return home.  I bring with me enough troops to reinforce the Com Guard garrison.  The Word of Blake are monsters.  They care nothing for the people of Earth.  Yes Earth.  The ancient name of our home world.
“I am Brigadier General John Murray commander of the 173RD Royal Jump Infantry Brigade.  I am bringing with me the 1ST Royal Dragoons and 7TH Royal Light Horse regiments.  We are not alone.  You are not alone.  It is darkest before the dawn and the dawn is upon us all.  Stay home, keep out of the streets.  We drop in ten minutes over the Central American plains with the intent of destroying the Word of Blake infection that has begun to fester upon the Earth.
“We are the Legion, we are the Hegemony, and we are coming home.”  Murray killed the connection and Mathews was automatically switched back to the Fleet COMNET.
Smiling to herself she didn’t think John had it in him.  She continued to listen to the general chatter.  A swarm of fighters was still coming up from the surface but SIGINT was already detecting a lot of traffic.  Her COM system beeped and switched back over to the ships intercom.  “Ma’am we have just been informed that the Primus is in contact with General Murray.”
Mathews thought about that for a moment.  “Well Captain, what prey tell are they talking about.”
“That I don’t know but let’s just say the Primus is concerned that she has not been able to contact Precentor Koenigs-Cober since we entered the system and the 201ST Divisions command is unreachable at Salinas.  Reports are filtering in that fighting has broken out on the Great Plains as well.”  Garza reported.
“I want our drop adjusted.  Find me the survivors of the 201ST and land us near them.  I want to take the Shadow Lancers out fast.”  She looked over the deployment maps as they scrolled across the command console of her Imp.  Then she saw it.  “Captain pass to the rest of the Black Hawks.  I want us to land in this formation and sequence.  Get our artillery down fast in these locations.”  She said highlighting several positions.
“Yes Ma’am, I think I see what you are going for.”  Garza agreed.
“Good pattern drop BattleMechs along with our armored infantry platoons.  Once we are down we can move onto the Lancers quickly as our armor is assembled.  I want them to land behind the Lancers as our ‘Mech’s and armored infantry drive them back.”  Mathews continued.  “Then we can encircle them and grind them out with the help of the Com Guardsmen.”
“Aye Ma’am.  I will alert the rest of the Squadron to our plans.”  Garza replied.
Mathew watched the feed from the Fleet Data Net as it was collected from the various ships in the strike forces and distributed around the fleet to assist with planning and coordination.  This would be the first major military action on Terra in centuries and the Legion was doing it on a shoestring budget.  She hopped the Word of Blake would take the arrival of the Legion and the destruction of the Shadow Lancers as a sign and leave Terra alone.  If not they would be in for surprise when 3RD Division and other follow on support would arrive with reinforcements.
The days of the Legions neutrality were over.  May the Gods of whoever crossed their path look over them, as the Legion was not going to fade back into the nether world and vanish as if a bad dream for some.  They were here to stay…

Chapter Four

LZ Whiskey
Central Kansas
North America, Terra
28 February 3058

Jason Hawthorn watched the flashes on the horizon and heard the thunderous clash of what he could only image as some horrific thunderstorm.  But as he watched in the early morning light he continued to look to the sky in the east not seeing any sign of a storm.  That was when he heard the shriek of air being ripped apart and shoved aside.  Six black dots descended from the heavens in a formation he had seen Canadian Snow Geese migrating in before.  These were no geese.  This was something else.  Something dangerous.  Something deadly.  Something with a purpose.

   “Colonel?”  He inquired.
“SITREP?”  Mathews requested a Situation Report.
“Aye Ma’am, all DropShips report in position and prepared to execute drop.”  Garza reported from his position on the bridge.  “On your order Colonel we can begin dropping the regiments BattleMechs and Armored Infantry.  The Leander, Vector, Promise and Yellow Rose are ready to begin descent and assault landings at LZ Sierra.”
“The Order is given Captain.  Lets get into this fight.”  Mathews stated.

CIA Safe House

The COM terminal chirped across the room from the large table.  Master Sergeant Todd Hunt looked up at Joanna as she crossed to the terminal and confirmed that it was the secure line.  “It’s the Tokyo house.”  She told them.
Activating the device the wall screen came to life as the system synced up with its counterpart on the Japanese Islands.  The two systems conducted a handshake passing encryption information confirming and double and triple checking for the authorized codes before the screen flashed to life showing a demure woman that looked to be in her twenties.  “Joanna’san, It is so good to see you this day.”  She said.
Joanna smiled.  “Miyoko’san, it is so good to see you as well.  How have you been?”
“I am fine, that request you put in for a computer programmer that you made.  Well I found a reputable one.  I think you will be able to find him here in Tokyo I have an address for your business associates across town.”  The young looking Asian woman said.
“Oh thank you Miya, that makes me so happy.  I will pass this address to my associates and they will call upon him shortly.  How are your children doing?”  Joanna asked her counter part in Japan.
“Bryan just made Demi-Precentor in the local TerraSec tactical response unit and just got finished selecting his own team.  I am so proud of him.”  Miya said with a knowing smile.  Master Sergeant Hunt just gave Joanna a look wondering just how old she was.  “Aiko, well lets just say she has followed a less honorable path.”
   “Oh?”  Joanna said in shock.
“Yes Jo, she I am afraid has become a Lawyer.”  Miya said before they both broke out into laughter.
“Oh dear, yes she has fallen from grace hasn’t she.”  Joanna commented between snorts of laughter.  “Well my old friend it is time to go I will pass on your recommendation to my associates and I hope to have you and your family over to visit soon.”
“I am sure Michael will enjoy that as well as I would.”  Miyoko said smiling.

Fujishima Residence
Shinjuku, Tokyo
Japan, Terra

Satoshi Fujishima sat in his apartment watching the news reports as they began to come in.  He knew that was his sign to do what he could to keep the Com Guard and other Terran Security forces out of the fight for as long as possible.  Satoshi accessed his terminal bringing up his client database.
Accessing several files at once he began typing a command line in that seemed random and incoherent.  As he was accessing more files and security algorithms there was a knock at the door.  Satoshi paused for a moment.  He accessed the security feed from outside his door. Standing in the hall were two men in tactical gear.  They sure didn’t look like ROM or for that matter TerraSec.  Could they be Light of Mankind?  He thought to himself.
Satoshi paused for a second.  This isn’t part of the plan.  He thought.  Turning back to his terminal he began furiously entering commands for the separate security regions across Terra.  That’s when the knocking became forceful.
“Mr. Fujishima open the door!”  A woman’s voice shouted from the hall.  “Mr. Fujishima! Open this door now it is not safe you are in danger.  Open the door now!”  She yelled again.
Satoshi continued his work without stopping.  He heard muffled radio traffic.  That was when his world came apart.  The glass to his seventh story studio apartment shattered with a sonic breach charge.  A small oblong object bounced into the room before it even came to a rest a blinding flash of light followed by a loud bang and small gel packets shot out of the grenade slamming into objects all over the room.  One small packet flew past Satoshi’s face impacting the terminal screen.  On impact the gel packet unleashed an old but true concentrated tear gas.
Satoshi wretched up his breakfast as his eyes and nose began to run.  He convulsed and fell out of his chair shaking on the floor as the door was kicked in by the two in the hall and the windows already smashed open allowed for two more masked men in tactical gear to swing into the room on repel lines.
The commando’s swarmed into the room clearing all the dead space including the bathroom.  A stunned Satoshi lay on the floor of his studio shaking and starring.  A woman’s voice was heard over the ringing in his ears.  He couldn’t make out what she was saying as she shook him with her boot.  The female commando squatted down in front of Satoshi.
“Satoshi Fujishima, you are under arrest for Treason against the people of Earth.  Conspiring with the enemy and cyber terrorism.”  The voice finished saying as she removed her balaclava.  “Mr. Fujishima if you would just have answered the door you wouldn’t have pissed yourself and I wouldn’t have had to do this.”  She said as she pressed a patch against the computer programmers’ neck.  She slapped it after checking to make sure it was placed right releasing a tranquilizer.
Standing up she motioned to one other.  “Sergeant Hernandez, help me secure the prisoner.”  She requested.
“On it Ma’am.”  The masked man replied.  He moved over and together they flex cuffed Satoshi and gagged and hooded him.
“Miller, what did he do with his terminal?”  She asked.
The fourth man on the entry team looked over Satoshi’s computer and winced.  “Looks like he was activating security protocols for bases all over the planet.”  He looked at it.  “Hilton Head, most of the Castle Brian’s and even ROM HQ in Cairo are all locked down.  Doesn’t look like he had a chance to finish his work before we interrupted him.”
“Christ.”  She looked out the busted out window across the street to her over watch team.  “Ghost 5 this is Ghost 1, Flash Traffic for command.  Inform them that Trojan has been stopped but he auctioned on part of his orders.  Which parts remain unknown at this time.  We are moving to the extraction site at this time.  We have Trojan in custody and will move to the Alamo.”
“1 this is 5, confirmed we are transmitting now.  Will continue to cover until you are clear.”  Ghost 5 reported.
“Roger 5.  We are out in 2.”  Captain Natasha Romanoff said.

Colonel Bianca Mathews watched the external feeds cut out and only the glow of her Imp’s status displays light the interior of her machine.  The umbilical severed she had no idea what was happening outside of her BattleMechs drop cocoon.  Inside the massive bay of the Lee-class DropShip Painted Horse massive gantries and robotic arms moved the cocoons of the first BattleMechs to be dropped over Terra since Operation Liberation three hundred years before.
Mathews felt the ship shutter from the first launches then again as a second lance of ‘Mechs was dropped.  Then she felt her cocoon swing from its transport cradle and lock into the drop gantry.  The finale external display began counting down.  The timer hit four seconds and then blanked out right on time four seconds later she felt her stomach rush up into her throat as her cocooned BattleMech was flung clear of its mother-ship.
Mathews had conducted numerous simulated drops and even several practice drops during training with her Black Hawks.  The terror she felt knowing that while the Com Guard fighters hadn’t fired on there first pass they were turning around and her Troopers were being flung into the atmosphere and would be burning brightly like giant billboard signs announcing their presence.  It would take much for aerospace fighters to deal a crippling blow to a dropping BattleMech.
She watched the estimated altimeter as she ripped through the heavens trailing molten ceramic plate.  Her drop pod was afire streaking thru the sky as it raced to the surface below.  Soon the buffeting subsided and only the rush of air could be heard from the outside world.
After another twenty seconds a load warning chimed in the cockpit after five seconds of warning the top of her drop pod shot free when the explosive bolts detonated separating the top from the rest of the pod and releasing a drogue chute.  The drogue chute began building resistance to the air around and slowing the descent of the pod ever so slightly.
Ten seconds later the tone sounded again and was followed by the rest of the pod peeling away and being dragged free of the ‘Mech before the frame blasted free itself.  Once over fifty meters away from the falling BattleMech the shell exploded out into five separate segments plus the drogue chute and drop computer.  All six pieces began to burn up in the remaining heat and friction of the drop.
Mathews watched as her ‘Mech continued to plummet to the surface.  Now that the machine was clear of the pod a shaft shot up out of the drop rig attached to her Imp.  Once the rig was extended to ten meters above the falling BattleMech then three petals flashed up and locked into place and begun to ****** the fall of the drop.  At fifteen hundred meters above the deck her ‘Mech’s drop rig ignited the jump pack attached to her Imp drastically slowing her rate of descent.

Jason was still transfixed on the departing aerospace fighters when the building whistling sound above him was suddenly interrupted with the blasting sound of plasma fueled jump packs strapped to dozens of falling BattleMechs.  He looked up in horror as he began to realize that he was not watching some storm brewing in the east.  He was watching a war unfold near his home, on his father’s farm.  Just 30 kilometers east of Wilson Kansas.  War had come, a war he would not escape.
