Nebula California-Star Empire-3150 "The Tribe"
« on: 19 December 2016, 22:11:37 »
As some of you may have picked up: I like designing stuff from other universes and bringing them into battletech. Because of this, one of my Favorite products is actually Welcome to the Nebula California. It is a free PDF over on DrivethruRPG (or it was last time I checked), and it has material, for an area of space that is totally not star wars at all, home to The Star Empire, and the The People's Rebellion. Nebula California is a region of space that an Old Explorer Corp group began exploring, and eventually found out that it was impossible to Jump back out of.

This is where my own version of events starts

This left them stranded. After spending years sending reports back to whomever was listening back in the inner sphere, eventually they gave up. For the rest of the universe, this mostly didn't matter. Eventually secret R&D was done in the republic based on these reports, allowing the republic to create it's Hyperspace interdicting technologies, and go all fortress-y. For years prior to that, however, the Comstar, and later elements within the Word of Blake, (and somehow the society even participated), sent detailed technological plans there as part of what was termed "The Ark Project". You see, some people got it in their heads years before the Jihad that there was a decent chance humanity might knock itself back into the stone age (again, kinda). They decided that the Explorer Corp group stuck in the Nebula California would make an excellent dumping ground to preserve technology, history, and any information deemed important. So Automated programs were set up that not only sent tech reports, intel and uploaded historical data, but also gleaned data from the HPG networks, and sent it to the Nebula.

Meanwhile, inside the Nebula, abandoned by the inner sphere, with no home of leaving, it was determined that they would "Settle" one of the discovered systems, and make it their own. The territory of the Star Empire was targeted, and Conquered. Once the new regime was established, and with the constant flow of tech data, the Explorer Corp team, which had decided to rename itself "The Tribe" in a somewhat nihilistically joking reference to such stories as Lord of the Flies, set about improving the general quality of life. With the Star Empire militarily defeated, and the Peoples Rebellion losing the reasons to fight, the system prospered.

Taking the abundance of capital ships within the system, that survived the change of power, The Tribe began refitting them with superior technology.

This thread is intended to detail that Technology. Some of it has seen use in other AU's of mine, but all of it originated for this game. It's all inspired by star wars, but strays further from star wars than the conversions I do for warhammer 40,000, so I don't want to call this thread conversions, but I think "inspired by' fits well.

In any design that does take any tech from the Nebula California book, I will note it at the end of the design. None of those items will be included in the BV2, or C-Bill cost either, so that if u want to use them in a more regular game, you can, with no change but to delete the end of the entry with those items.

I do take requests, if anyone wants to see any particular star war thing show up here.

A direct upgrade of the obsolete Imperial Star Destroyer of the Star Empire (pg 69 of Welcome to the Nebula California), this ship is designed to Conquer Worlds, and it the primary command ship in use by The Tribe. The Totem TCS is a platform capable of virtually any operation. Part warship headhunter, part carrier, part military transport, the Totem is designed to not only operate independently of a fleet, but to actually be a fleet, all on it's own.

A massive bay capable of housing small ships up even up to destroyers, with multiple bays for a wide variety of shuttles, small craft and fighters, the Totem not only brings with it a sizable force, capable of being transported inside the ship, but it can recover ships, whether defeated enemies, or broken allies, and get them back into working order.

In addition to it's sizable aerospace assets, the Totem carries an absolutely massive ground contingent of mechs and infantry. It also carries the medical and support personnel to support this force. The idea is to carry the necessary manpower, to not only conquer or defend any planet it can reach, but to also be able to maintain it's infrastructure through any attack.

It's weapons load-out is a mix of Capital and Sub-capital lasers and Heavy Naval PPCs. The Naval Lasers and PPCs are set in bays capable of bracketing an enemy ship even at extreme capital range. The Sub-capital lasers are actually independently targeted from each other. While unorthodox, this allows the smaller lasers to seek weaknesses and exposed areas to cause crippling damage, while the stronger bay's combined fire punches holes in the Totem's victims.

A Large Naval Comm Scanner Suite rounds out this ship's capabilities, giving it an absolutely massive sensor range, competing even with specialized ships like the ancient Bugeyes. This allows the ship to almost always be prepared long in advance of any threat.

To maintain the massive number of personnel, the Totem sports at a minimum Second Class Cabins for every single person on board. It has 28 250-meter grav decks, and support to keep the morale of the passenger's up via field kitchens and medical bays. It is one of the roomiest ships to crew aboard, with plenty to keep an individual busy with even during their off hours.

Terror Fighters
« Reply #2 on: 19 December 2016, 22:54:14 »
The old Star Empire used a cheap T-fighter (pg 64 of Welcome to the Nebula California) as it's primary ASF, with various variants based on it, some heavier, others faster. Since, at the beginning, many of the new pilots being recruited into The Tribe's ASF forces came from now defunct Star Empire formations, it was determined that they would use tactics based on what the star empire used, and adapt the fighter to be a more dangerous combatant. They also adapted several variants as standard production models to fill certain roles in the fleet.

The Terror Fighter
Designed to be fast and maneuverable, allowing it's pilots to always tail their foes, to stay safe and kill the enemy at the same time... a plan that only sometimes works. Still the maneuverability can let the canny pilots keep themselves outside of enemy fire arcs, while attacking for themselves. It is far lighter than almost any fighter in the inner sphere, but it's main draw for the industrial complex powering The Tribe, is it's price tag of less than a million c-bills.

Terror Interceptor
After the Terror fighter gained popularity among the crazy pilots of The Tribe's new holdings, they developed another fighter. This one would be top-of-the-line in technology, sparing no expense, in order to deliver the greatest performance to the surviv... I mean Elite pilots. Dubbed the Terror-Interceptor by the pilots, no one really remembers what it's original designation was. One of the fastest fighters known to humans, this design has actually killed pilots due solely to acceleration. The high-tech structure of the fighters design actually makes it considerably tougher than it's predecessor.

Terror Bomber
In need of a heavier unit capable of anti-shipping actions, The Tribe's design teams next focused on adapting the T-Bomber variant. By replacing the slow inefficient, but highly damaging photon torpedoes, with housings for the more useful thunderbolt missile launchers, the teams were able to produce a longer ranged anti-shipping fighter. In addition to the thunderbolts, the design team also added a mine dispenser, allowing the fighter to engage in some battlefield control. Slower than other Terror-type fighters, but with thicker armor, this one delivers a dangerous punch, that even the few AMS systems found inside the Nebula have difficulty dealing with. This design was dubbed the Terror bomber, by the crazy, though un-imaginative pilots.

Militia Fighters
« Reply #3 on: 27 December 2016, 08:44:27 »
With the Star Empire's Aerospace Fighter core integrating into The Tribe's forces, they turned to the People's Rebellion. The proposal was that they would become the militia, the defensive force of armed civilians, that would be the last line of defense protecting the population centers. Warily, the People's Rebellion agreed. Following this, The Tribe released a set of blueprints as open source documents. Intended as direct upgrades to the People's Rebellion's fighters, these plans allowed them to build better fighters that used better technology.

An upgrade of the X-Fighter (Welcome to the Nebula California pg 65). The design replaced the proton torpedo launchers with MMLs, allowing for great reach or a dangerous punch close up. It added additional lasers in the rear to help defend the pilot against more maneuverable enemies. Deflectors were added to make the fighters more likely to survive, theoretically reducing the resource drain on their communities. It was also decided that most of these 'Militia Fighters" would carry two seat cockpits, allowing a two man team to control the fighters with greater efficiency.

These designs called for the removal of the energy weapons in favor of a larger payload of missiles. In addition it replaced the proton launchers with MMLs, and 3 tons of ammo. While slower than the MSF, the MFSF also carries the two seat cockpit and deflector shields of militia fighters. This design also features the new-to-them Anti-Missile Systems, allowing these fire support fighters to also act as escorts keeping enemy missiles from harming themselves or their allies.

While matching the Terror Fighter in speed, this is the fastest militia fighter. Intended as an interceptor for the militia, it's entire weapons loadout was stripped in favor of a pair of medium lasers. Though lacking the two seat cockpit, this design does incorporate the deflectors. Intended to be the first militia unit to reach a fight, despite being poorly armed, The Tribe is interested in seeing how well this holds up in battle with it's deflector.

The heaviest hitter in the militia designs, the MAF carries not only the traditional two seat cockpit and deflector shield, but also uses advanced variable lasers and other energy weapons to deliver a punch that even large ships will feel. It's torpedo systems were replaced by a Steak SRM 6, allowing the fighter better accuracy than any other in the militia. Based on the People's Rebellion's B-Fighter, the engineers stripped a lot of the unnecessary systems that and generally redesigned it to handle atmospheric flight better. The new design looks like it used the old one for parts, but bears little other resemblance to it's predecessor.

Okay. I have a question. The Empire was supposed to be a near direct rip-off of Star Wars, so when I see the T-Fighter and X-Wing, I see the star wars versions and not the Star League fighter silhouettes that were legally obligated to be in the document.

So, is there a reason you're calling this 'the Tribe'? Are you also riffing some other IP? and if so, can you specify, because I'm not as broadly learned in all the potential sci-fi options available. I see Tribes, and I can't help thinking of the post Cybrid Wars game of the same name.

Or, are you referencing more of a BattleStar Galactica feel? I could see drone operating systems put into the large fleet of T-Fighters with Base Control Vessels guiding whole swarms of the things.

Secondly, since you're messing with the empire aspect, I do have a request can you develop a T-Bomber?

I am glad to see someone interested in this, welcome!

With the name The Tribe, I wasn't referencing any one thing, more like a conglomeration of things, including the battle star galactica. A big part of what I was referencing a lot of post apocalyptic fiction in which humanity ends up in a tribal state. For these guys, being cut off from the rest of the universe, it is basically post-apocalypse, their world, as they knew it, is gone and they are a tribe in the changed landscape of their universe, trying to survive.

Eventually I'll touch on the other areas in the Nebula. They started with the Star Empire area because of the technological differences, that allow them to dominate, while at the same time acquire the massive manufacturing capability that will then let them spread to the rest of the nebula. The book mentioned staggering quantities of capital ships, and with the poor quality of the weapons used in that region, they were a juicy target. They did it more through a coup than a military conquest too. More of a decapitating the head, and his fleet, and tell the rest to get in line, with a lure of making all their tech better. As the People's rebellion saw the improved quality of life, and lack of genocide under the new regime, they were not difficult to bring into the new fold.

Something it might interest you to note, In this region of space, I actually use the system map from Serenity/Firefly and added the planets mentioned in the book to that system. It gives me a lot of already existing material to work with (even if it laughs at physics).

In addition to eventuially expending into the rest of the material in Nebula California's book, I do plan on adding in other IPs, including Iron Sky's Nazis, the lost Colonies fleeing from Cylons, serenity/firefly material, Anne Mckaffery's Pern, Halo, and more. The Nebula California is not fully explored, and it has plenty of room for adding in almost anything I want.

The only two IP's I have definite plans to not include at all is Warhammer (fantasy or 40k) and Star Trek, which I already have placed in other areas of the galaxy, or other alternate universe's.

I do plan on doing separate threads for each IP though, so that no one has to sort through IPs they aren't interested in for stats to the ones they are after.

Secondly, since you're messing with the empire aspect, I do have a request can you develop a T-Bomber?

I am actually ahead of you, in the Terror Fighter post, the third one, 'Terror Bomber' is my inspired-by of the TIE Bomber. Note however, that this is first generation StarEmpire-to-TheTribe conversions. The Tribe, being from the Inner Sphere, knows they aren't that great of machines, and is going to slowly phase the Star Empire fighter pilots into actually decent machines. So expect later, more dangerous-in-battletech versions to come eventually. Also if you have any requests for what to make, or even change, I am willing.

In the Terror Bomber, the idea is to use a missile that can hit for capital damage, while still being a single missile per launcher that the Star Empire pilots are used to, kind of a little bit of comfort zone while they adjust tot he new tech. At the end, I had the space so I also added a space mine launcher, because I love having a fighter around that can deploy those, and I thought it fit with the anti-shipping theme of the TIE Bomber. The things really need more armor though. Also, I couldn't remember if TIE Bombers had shields or not, so I just didn't bother adding any to the Terror Bomber. I am planning that later generations will have shields.

No, they don't. Only the TIE advanced and some of the other experimental designs had shields. The interceptor and bomber variants didn't have the shields unless someone got them installed. (Usually theater commanders or high ranking officials.)

With the huge system under The Tribe's nominal control, they needed a starship that would help civilian government functions. The Tribe choose a popular model from Conellion Engineering Corp, one of they systems many shipyards, to convert to the higher tech standard they insisted on. The design chosen was a small capital ship noted as being able to be built to numerous specifications, made-to-order as per the customer's wishes.

The redesign uses the new technology to pack as many of the various versions as possible into a single ship. The final design had a squadron (by this system's organization a squadron of fighters is 12, The Tribe chose not to change that at the present time) of aerospace bays, 6 small craft bays to ferry it's 600 passengers and 9,000 tons of cargo to and from the surface. It was further upgraded with a variety of laser weapons, designed to warn off enemies, and it can indeed bloody a dropship's nose, and give a hostile fighter squadron a bad day. It's not a serious threat to a powerhouse like the Totem, but it keep's the ship safe in general.

Unfortunately, the designers at the yard insisted that there was no way weapons could be placed in the aft fire arc, so like the CR-95's predecessor, this ship has a blind spot in the back. Since the whole system seems to be used to that state of affairs, The Tribe decided to not insist at this time, and would revisit the design at a later time, after they have brought this backward system out of it's technological dark age. Until then hopefully it's fighter squadron, and creative use of capital missiles can keep it's aft quarter safe.

Since it's release, and mass production, the CR-95 Corvette has seen use as a diplomatic transport, Enforcement  and Customs ship, Relief ship, and even as a support/escort for Totem class ships. The Conellion Engineering Corp has made piles of c-bills from selling these to nearly every level of the system.

Star Empire Mechs
In the system now nominally controlled by The Tribe, the factions had come to a conclusion regarding combat that differed pretty far from the Inner Sphere's doctrines. Essentially, this local philosophy was that ground combat's most important unit was the infantry trooper. They are what would capture and hold territory, and bring it into any one faction's domain. Everything else was to support that aim.

As such, the Star Empire only fielded two mechs, though they had tried and phased out several others. Both of them were designed for different supporting roles to the main trooper contingents of the Empire's armies. The Tribe having different opinions on the role of the mech, knew that in order to keep power, they would have to ween them off these ideas slowly. As such, the upgraded versions of these two mechs, while still very able to support infantry, took on whole new roles.

When first proposed, The Tribe was wary, not liking the costs invovled in the design, but after consulting local economists, and learning that the labyrinthine economics at play that made even less sense to The Tribe than the Inner Sphere's own economies, but would absolutely support the mass production of these monsters, The Tribe okay's the design.

The original Mech it was replacing filled the ignominious role of armored and heavily armed transport. The Tribe however believed infantry could be moved much more efficiently in other ways, and seeing the command systems already aboard it, decided to discard the transport role, and focus on the command aspects of the design.

When finished the new design had state of the art command and control systems, and heavy enough armor to survive even starship fire. Heavy laser systems capable of burning holes in heavy armor are supported by anti infantry pulse lasers and grenade launchers.

Though nominally a scout and recon unit, the Star Empire often used these in an Anti-Armor role as well. Replacing the blasters with ER Large Lasers has brought that out in this design. It also replaced the small anti-infantry blaster on the side with a pulse laser that was much better at the job. Overall very little changed in the design, but the end product left the ground forces of the Star Empire wanting more.

Incom, the manufacturers who were able to upgrade their X Fighter design into the Sentinel Militia Fighter, requested and was given permission to upgrade another craft to the new standard. The planned upgrade was for their UT-60D, a versatile craft that could transport multiple squads relatively quickly, and provide them with limited support.

One item surprised The Tribe's leadership, pleasantly, was the inclusion of a Mobile HPG on the new design, replacing the comm equipment the old design had. The ability to deploy such devices on such small packages was intriguing, and suddenly the project received a great deal more attention. While it isn't planned for the main military units to use these, they definitely fill a powerful niche in the militia. The Tribe has already begun working on future plans for the design. Meanwhile the Former Star Empire fighter pilots are relieved to not have to ferry troops around, and make it known they prefer dropships for troop deployment.

Capital Shield Generator                                               1000.00

Despite the end to the civil war brought about by The Tribe, the system was not really a peaceful place. Crime was rampant. Numerous criminal organizations had their own fleets of capital ships, fighters, and troops that they used to project their power through the underworld. The Tribe found this an unacceptable state of affairs, and with the People's Rebellion and Star Empire settling down into their new roles, they felt it was time to address this problem.

After several engagements, and several Totems lost to squadrons launching barrages of proton torpedoes at point blank range, it was decided that the next Capital scale ship that would be converted would be something to deal with the masses of enemy fighters, and be more thorough about it that the Terror Fighters were.

On searching through Star Empire logs, they came across the Lancer class Frigate. A relatively small ship whose sole purpose was to slaughter fighters. This was to be their starting platform. The design was very simple, it mounted numerous quad laser turrets and would use them to bring down fighters using bracketing fire and anti-fighter firing modes.

The first thing the design team did was strip the blaster technology of any scale of the ship and through it in the same trash bin they had been using for all the other redesigns. Initially they did a simple replace of the blaster tech for class 45 naval lasers. The extreme range of the weapons would allow the crew to begin engaging fighters far outside of return fire range.

Unfortunately the ship still proved vulnerable to massed squadron attacks. While effective when the did hit, the Naval Lasers couldn't destroy small targets quickly enough to prevent the point blank torpedo attacks it was intended to stop. The design team added a second, then a third layer of lasers. The second consisted of Class 2 Sub-Capital Lasers. These hit hard enough and at sufficiently long range while being able to track small targets better than the naval lasers could. It was still found to be not enough. The admiralty wanted the ship to be able to account for 6 12-fighter squadrons before they could do significant damage to anything.

The third layer of weapons was a series of extended ranged and pulse large lasers, like the capital weapons, these too were mounted in quad bays. The result was an impressive light show. It was also considerably dangerous for enemy fighters. Unfortunately, in an impromptu live fire test, it was still shown to not be quite where it needed to be. One of the self styled 'crime barons' had gotten word of the project, and that it was nearing completion. He struck at the prototype ship during it's shakedown cruise. It managed to destroy hundreds of fighters, but ended up falling to barrages of the proton torpedoes that this system is so fond of.

Despite the loss, funding for the project was still in the green, thanks to the seemingly arbitrary vagaries of the system's economy, so it continued. The next step the design team took proved to be the last one needed. They installed a massive array of quad laser antimissile bays.

Since it's deployment, the Spear Escort Frigate has proven to be an able escort to the Totem TCSs. It has been regarded in-system as so effective that most 'fights' end up being chases instead of fights. The Tribe's Star Empire Fighter Corps is especially happy with the ship, since with it there, they can engage large targets that are unable to deal with such maneuverable fighters, as the Spear simply annihilates the enemy fighter screens.

Unfortunately, outside the umbrella of a Totem's guns, the Lancer has proven vulnerable to some of the larger and faster capital ships in the ships in the system. It's broadside, while dangerous if within fighter range, is not the most powerful, and it can be overwhelmed. Especially ships with multiple capital deflector shields can prove more than a match for the frigate.

By the time the first Totem TCSs were rolling off the line, plans were already being unveiled for another capital ship. Revisiting old designs had allowed the impressive automated processes to design a ship quicker than would otherwise be possible, even for the impressive facilities in they system.

Compared to the Totem, the Demagogue is rather under-gunned, however it's massive fleet of aerospace fighters can take down most foes, while allowing the carrier to use it's weapon bays in a surgical manner, taking down targets that are giving the fighters too much trouble.

In addition to this the defense arrays of the ship allow it to be very well defended against most missile attacks, including the short-range-but-dangerous native proton torpedoes. Dual shield generators protect the ship even before the enemy weapons have to deal with it's thick hull and heavily reinforced structure.

A sensor and communications suite tied into the ship's command functions allow ideal battlefield control, and help coordinate the massive number of fighters fielded by the ship.

Since a Platoon works best... just the -1 to-hit for standard Infantry. Oh and that Semi-Portable? Just one per Squad, so fire away!

Sorry edit: the above is just ONE Squad... times that by four - 12.76 or 13 points damage @ range 2 ( 6 Hexes ) Armor Divisor: 2, 1 MP a turn.

What about a Totally-not-a-Super Star Destroyer?

Personally, with the Totally-not-a-Star-Destroyer being 2,500,000 tons, and that being the max for ships, I had no plans to make a super star destroyer inpsired ship. I regard it as a scaled-up-for-e-peen purposes version of the imperial star destroyer anyway. If you would like to make a version of it, you are welcome to it, and if so, I'll even add it to my Links in the OP with credit.

Your nightmare is complete!

The PDF Welcome to the Nebula California has stats for the lightsaber, called a 'Luminescent Vibrosword. It is 10M/4 damage in aToW and 3 power pps, and .74 damage in battletech, according to the stats listed in that document. He should be carrying that instead of the clan vibrosword.

Still consider this, a Standard Stormtrooper Platoon was 36, + a Command and a Sargent Major... We know what a 36-trooper Platoon is called now, right?

The WttNC pdf has stats for their version of storm troopers too, even record sheets for them. They also have blaster and storm trooper stats. Pulse laser Rifles would be better. As it stands, the WttNC storm troopers are 21-man groups with divisor of 2 and 13 damage at full strength, 1 mp and a range of 3. I have been thinking of going all out with marine environmental suits, and Mauser IICs when I get around to upgrading them. They probably won't get cybered up to start with though... that'll be saved for the special storm troopers.

Question for you, how would you build General Grievous?

Off the top of my head...

Thugee second limb mod, basic Darth Vader chassis, 4 x Luminescent Swords.

I don't have the PDF so wasn't sure how to make it work.

But if you swapped out the vibro-sword @ .37 for .74 new calculations would be: still 1, even with the claws.

General Greivous would be like something 3ish plus change.

Work began on the Shaman at nearly the same time as the Demagogue class carrier was being designed. The lesser known shipyard was trying to bid for a military contract. When the Demagogue was completed in record time, the larger manufacturer entered into a joint partnership with the smaller corporation and helped them complete the design in what they called the 'Victory Initiative'.

With the lack of PDS defenses in the area, a missile boat was deemed to be especially dangerous. Capable of crippling ships much larger and generally more powerful than itself, with repeated missile attacks, the Shaman was a welcome addition to the Tribe's ever growing fleets.

It also carried a small invasion force of a few 'Mechs and a large contingent of infantry. Defensively it carries twenty-four fighters and has an array of lasers designed to drive away opponents that get to close, preferring to keep them at range.

The biggest weakness of the design is it's speed, however that is offset by a combination of sensor range and the interstellar capabilities of capital missiles.

Thank you for bringing up this book. It might have what I need for a rules project I'm working on...

With the AT-AT being replaced by the AT-CM the Tribe needed a replacement for it's heavy infantry carrier. Looking through the Archives of The 'Verse's history, they discovered a super-heavy tank that housed up to 300 troopers at a time. It was decided to bring that back, and update it with weaponry that would be well suited to supporting the infantry it carried. This was the result.
