DroST IIb- hidden gem?
« on: 05 January 2017, 13:55:31 »
While away from my own computer I checked Sarna for some information on the Drost to run cargo calculations . . . and noticed the inclusion of a new Drost II- the b!  Gunship/CVL, I think the ship released in XTRO:Primitives fits a niche not previously address.  I will also take it as response to some player feed back about having some more small carrier type ship.

Better armored than obsolete Achilles assault DS but not the upgraded or other assault ships (like the Intruder) it does a carry a respectable shell.  For the time its got a decent set of guns and carries 8 small craft to deploy into naval battles or as escorts.  Cargo space is better than the Union but I am not sure 240 tons can really allow it long patrols if the Small Craft are not primarily equipped with energy weapons.  It does have large fuel tanks which can keep those small craft operating.

I think it can be a great player unit . . . the six small craft bays could be exchanged for eight ASF bays to increase capability.  The ship's weapons are also an easy upgrade option to make the lasers into ER versions but the AC/10s I am not sure what would work best- Gauss rifles, UAC/10 or RAC/5?

Anyone used the IIb yet?

Haven't used but I agree a nice ship

I'd say gauss instead of AC is just for the range

The only complaint I ever remember hearing about it is that it is over 5000 tons. This may be important, because as a primitive dropship it would have needed to fit in a dropshuttle bay, and that limit is 5000 tons.

Fortunately, the last type of Drost produced was at the same time primitive K-F booms entered mass production, so one would hope those at least had them.

Refits to add a KF boom are actually relatively cheap. Also, as I understand it we should probably expect a revised DroST at some point in the future that brings it down to five thousand tons.

As for my personal thoughts on an updated DroST IIB...
Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

One would think it would have been easier for the developers to set the completely arbitrary limit at 5500 or 6000T. Not something that would awkwardly leave an existing design in limbo. Not like there's any sort of hard science dictating the limits any way.

The limit actually existed before the DroST was created (it dates back to at least Mercenaries Supplemental II). So arguably we should be blaming the designer of the dropship. :)

I find the DroST to be a nice addition to any invasion fleet for the Age of War setting

The DroST IIb is a fine little attack dog and I love the look of it too.
