Cannibals eat their own species. The term you're looking for is sophovore(eater of thinkers), or something along those lines. Sentient cannibals certainly qualify as sophovores, but sophovores are not automatically cannibals.

Dear Lord, I hope not.  I can understand Leia -- RIP Carrie -- but please don't kill my boyhood hero, the mystical science fiction wizard fighter pilot wunderkind.

I heard them say Leia had a major role in IX.  And the finished filming VIII before Carrie died.  So hard to say how they'll handle it.

I doubt they'll kill Luke at this point though

I'm still bummed that Snoke didn't turn out to be Luke.

I was really, really crossing my fingers that Luke's decision to cut his training with Yoda short back on Degobah would come back to bite him and turn him.  You know, exactly as Yoda warned.

Maybe it is Luke, cloned from the hand lost on Bespin.  And then Yoda gets to be right.  From a certain point of view.

Plus when I grew up, I could, like, totally connect with Jabba's tastes in ladies ;D ...probably not part of the intended kid-appeal. His music band, though...

I think Rogue One is the only film not marketed directly at the kids and not featuring a kid-like character (sorry, disagree with the monk there), which is part of its appeal to me - you mean 99% of ALL the good guys in the movie actually, yknow, die?! Bold move!

I own an inflatable lightsaber from 1978 - admittedly regifted to me from someone who was gifted it AS an age-appropriate toy.

Star Wars was never geared towards adults, and ANY rational look at Star Wars as a whole is pretty clear evidence of that. You can't tell me that an inflatable lightsaber was meant for anything other than the 7-11 make demographic and expect anyone to believe it.

I'm a sophovore! :D

Intelligent food for intelligent people!
"But dolphins are intelligent!"

"Not this one. He blew all his money on instant lottery tickets."

I do see that a lot with the anti-Disney SW/Save the EU crowd. A willingness to immediately leap on any perceived flaw in the new movies while ignoring any such problems with anything Lucas did.

His Star Wars had plenty of flaws. Selectively ignoring them does not make them go away.
The people who legitimately feel this way are toxic - the second worst kind of fanboys. Instead of loving something, warts and all, they pretend that the warts suddenly, MAGICALLY appeared and when you point to those warts in old photographs they ignore you and continue blathering on about how "It was better back in my day" - 'my day' meaning 'the moment I first discovered it and it could do no wrong.'

What vexes me most is that they failed the most basic test of empathy. Rey saying "The garbage will do!" or Sabine tagging the side of a TIE Fighter or Finn grabbing a lightsaber for a fight he can't win or Ezra telling his captors "My name is Jabba" is that moment for someone else. By deciding it's awful before even watching it and THEN watching it for the signs of "Disneyfication" or "Horrible writing" or "They should have just used the EU storyline", they're closing themselves off from that moment in their own lives.

I'll freely admit I have trouble with the people whose 'Star Wars moment' was the prequel trilogy, but I think all of them are happy with the newest Star Wars stuff.

Sometimes, newer is better. Sometimes, older is better. D&D5e? So much improved over the previous four editions. Shadowrun 5e? Frag that, give me 3 - at least I don't need a drekeating tackle box of dice to resolve my character walking into a Stuffer Shack.

But older isn't better just because it's older, otherwise we'd still be using candles and riding horses. And newer isn't worst just because it's newer, otherwise we'd still be playing crappy 3e Bards.

The Disneyfication of Star Wars has not been all bad, we are getting more new movies and now when my 4 and 6 year old daughters want Disney princess gear I can get them Princess Leia, Padmé Amidala, Rey and Jyn Erso stuff instead of just more Elsa and Anna stuff  ;D

Indeed. One can't complain about "new movies copying the old" and "Disneyfication" at the same time. Heck, what IS Disneyfication anyway, when Disney itself is undergoing a paradigm shift compared to the 90s? The Sequel Trilogy is following the contemporary zeitgeist (aka prevailing culture) just as the Prequel Trilogy and the Original Trilogy did.

Leia yes.  Cause it certainly looks like Kylo is going 2 for 2 on killing his parents..  Luke, not so sure.

Well, we were told that Leia was going to be a big part of the next one, but then Carrie fisher passed away. They announced that they were going to adjust things so her character would get a proper ending this film, so I suspect yes leia will die.. But it will be in some crowning moment of awesome or plot relevant self sacrifice

Over on one of my adnd sites, someone is complaining that having luke be cowardly by 'being scared' of ray's power is not in keeping with his character..  Especially since in all the original trilogy, he showed he wasn't scared of anything.

BUT someone offered up an alteration he would LOVE to see..
Where rather than luke being in hiding cuase HE's scared, he went into hiding cause he KNEW his strength and didn't wnat to kill Kylo/snork..  And when Rey comes in and tells him what kylo did to han, a look crosses his face, and he lights up his saber..  SHE then says "You scare me"..
And luke replies "YOU SHOULD BE!."
It's not who you kill, but how they die!

.... or Finn grabbing a lightsaber for a fight he can't win .......

I hate Disney Star Wars with the fury of a thousand suns, but if there's one character in their new Star Wars I wish was in the old EU, it's Finn. A young, disillusioned Stormtrooper deserter with more bravery & righteousness than sense? Yeah, he's good with me!  8)

i never got the impression that Luke wasn't scared of anything. i know that was the tack the old EU tended to use, but we see Luke scared in ANH during the trash compactor and in the Xwing fight.. in ESB while captured by the Wampa, during and after the force-tree, and facing vader..and in ROTJ during his duel with Vader (it is how Vader goads him into attacking, using the fear of Leia being corrupted by Vader to get him angry)

Luke's fear tends to manifest as irrational thinking or nervousness, not panic. and Luke always manages to overcome his fear to do what is needed, eventually. that is what makes him a hero, and in many ways is what makes him a good Jedi.

i think him having a bit of nervousness and irrational thinking over Rey's power is perfectly in character. especially since it mirrors Yoda's response to him at Degobah. like Yoda, Luke is now an old man, has seen the order he helped build torn down by a promising and powerful student turned to evil, and had years in exile and solitude to stew in the memory of his failures.

and lets face it. while most people who see the trailer are going to see a reference to having seen such power only once before to be "oh, clearly he means Kylo Ren", i don't think Kylo will be the one he names. because while kylo has a few fancy tricks, he really hasn't been shown to be all that powerful. no, i think the person he will compare Rey to, is his father Anakin Skywalker. and he will use Anakin's fall to the dark side as Darth Vader to illustrate how dangerous such power can be.

The Prequel Trilogy Christmas Special replaces the wookiee scenes with Jar Jar's family.  And it's Jake Lloyd singing instead of Carrie Fisher or Bea Arthur.

I would pay good money to see that.

No, I'm being dead serious.

Why?

Because it would HAVE to be a carefully written parody of the things that we know are absolutely bottom-of-the-barrel, the worst stuff that Lucas ever crapped into a paper bag and set on fire before ringing our collective doorbells.

Maybe THEN people would look at Sabine Wren and think, "She may be a bit Mary Sue-ish, but at LEAST she doesn't see a bunch of lightsaber-wielding manaics and charge right into them with a blaster drawn instead of peppering them with bolts while flying safely above the melee." Jango Fett = great warrior my ass.

Actually Lucas had absolutely nothing to do with the Holiday Special besides selling the network the rights to do it (I forget which network is the guilty party). He hated it so badly he was once quoted that he personally wanted to hunt down every copy and destroy it.

He crapped in a bag a lot, but not that time.

I'm aware, but it was just a funny mental image that bowed me over - him setting fire and running, with Spielburg peeking from around a tree... made me think of American Graffiti.

Leia will NOT be killed in TLJ

http://mashable.com/2017/09/06/leia-lives-last-jedi/#omyt4NBXlmqC
Quote
So did that mean General Leia Organa — to us, she's royalty — would be killed off somehow in The Last Jedi? Now at last we have an answer, if director Rian Johnson speaks true.

"We don’t adjust what happens to her in this movie," Johnson told the New York Times in an interview published Wednesday. "She gives a beautiful and complete performance in this film."

Johnson described the harrowing emotional experience of going through the footage he'd shot with Fisher back in January, and how much of it was given emotional resonance by her absence.

"Emotionally, you can’t help recontextualize it, now that she’s gone," the director added, but insisted: "I felt very strongly that we don’t try to change her performance."

I thought I read somewhere that they decided to have Leia fade away and not die off screen. "She will live forever". But I can't find where I read that.

I guess we'll find out. I rather have her pass away off screen, giving her the dignity she deserves.  I'd hate see a CG version of her shows up in third movie, i think it would still be too soon.
