There is some confusion whether the jumping rules on Pg. 53 TW indicated 'shortest possible route' in a sense of "shortest possible given terrain features" or "shortest possible regardless of terrain features(that may result in the jump being impossible)".

In the photo attached, a player interpreted the rules as meaning that his jump, marked in dice, represented the shortest possible route between him and his jumping target hex.  The red and blue lines indicate the alternate comprehension of "shortest possible route" and would make the jump as intended illegal.

Some clarification on this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Jump jets are not nimble maneuvering thrusters; the intent is that a ’Mech can only travel to their target hex via the shortest path (i.e. the fewest number of hexes required to get there).  If more than one such path exists, the player chooses which of these paths their ’Mech takes.  If all such paths are illegal (for example, if there is only one path, and one of the hexes in the path has a level too high for the ’Mech to enter via jumping), then the ’Mech cannot jump to the destination hex at all.  As such, the path marked with yellow dice is not eligible.

This has been clarified in the BattleMech Manual, and will be addressed in future TW errata.
