I need some feedback, RBK-C(P) Green Knight
« on: 09 June 2017, 01:20:13 »
Here's a unit from one of my projects that I'm having trouble with.  After a slew of redsigns, I think I've found something I'm happy with.  Note that it carries the Collapsible Command Module found on the Cyclops.  What do you think?  Oh, the art is an image of the Banshee-11X.  The art can be found here; http://www.sarna.net/wiki/File:Banshee_11X.jpg

RGK-C(P) Green Knight

Produced By: Warrior Arms (Randis IV)
Introduced: 3130
Mass: 75
Tech Base: Inner Sphere (Primitive)

Cruising Speed: 25.6 kph
Maximum Speed: 38.8 kph
Jump Jets: None

Weapons and Equipment:
  1 ER-Large Laser
  2 L-PPCs
  2 Medium Lasers (R)
  Collapsible Command Module

Origin
By 3100, Randis IV bore no resemblance to the struggling world of less than a century ago; attracted to an independent
world defended by the militant Brotherhood of Randis, the planet’s industry remained untouched by Pirates or the Jihad and
its population skyrocketed in the final decade of the 31st century.  In 3128, with the majority of the Brother-hood off world,
Randis IV suffered a battalion-sized raid on the Hope Industrial Works as pirates sought to loot the plant in return for the
continued efforts of Grand Knight Lucas Beckett to exterminate pirate operations within the near Periphery.
Realizing the need to keep their homes secure, the Citizen’s Council of Randis IV ordered the creation of the Randis Militia,
a Regiment-sized combined-arms force.  To provide a dedicated command unit for the expanding force, financial backers
authorized Hope Industrial Works to design and build a Primitive command ‘Mech based on the Star League’s Black Knight.

Capabilities
Designed to provide the Militia with command facilities to control up to a Regiment in size, the centerpiece of the Knight is
the Collapsible Command Module first seen on the Cyclops BattleMech.  Requiring a team of seven communication specialists
to operate, the CCM can detach and begin operating in fifteen minutes.
Intended to remain in the area to protect the CCM, the design sacrifices speed for durability, carrying its design limit in
armor protection.  A ER-Large Laser in the left arm and a pair of L-PPCs in the right Torso constitute the majority of the Knight’s
firepower, but designers also included a second pair of Medium Lasers in the Center Torso to protect the rear arc of the ‘Mech.
When in transit, the CCM is stored in the left torso.

Battle History
Because both Militia and the Brotherhood jointly garrison Randis IV, most of the Militia’s field training and experience have
come from Pirate hunting and aid missions, providing reinforcements for the Brotherhood.  Overlooked due to its low production
rate and limited use the design’s first encounter with Pirates occurred in 3134, as Brotherhood forces pursued a Lance-sized
Pirate group on Basra.  Militia ‘Mechs assigned to security duty for the Brotherhood’s base camp were attacked by the remainder
of the Pirate force, led by an ECM-equipped Thunderbolt-7SE, making communications with the camp impossible.  As the Pirates
rushed the camp and the remainder of his Lance, Lt. Roberts managed to turn and fire his laser at the Brotherhood’s DropShip,
warning the camp before turning at close range and delivering an alpha-strike at the nearest Pirate.  The alert crew deduced the
situation immediately and sounded an alarm, blunting the effectiveness of the attack.  Supported by their DropShips, Militia forces
drove off the attack with only light damage.

Variants
Despite being the primary variant, production of the –C(P) has waned as more advanced command ‘Mechs have become
available and the Militia has become accustomed to a smaller unit size than originally envisioned.
With the production line idle, engineers re-tooled to produce a variant focused on combat, the –A(P).  A massive improvement
in armament moves the main gun to the Left Torso, substituting a Heavy PPC for the design’s main firepower.  Paired Large Lasers
in the Right Torso provide backup, and the Medium Lasers are kept in the Center Torso to protect the rear of this slow-moving unit.
Hidden from view are the three extra Heat Sinks and Armored Components to enhance durability on the battlefield.  Each
Shoulder and Hip benefit from the additional armor, while in the Head the Cockpit and a single LS and Sensor node are so equipped.

Notable Warriors
Lt. Rudolph Roberts, Ret., and Gryphon
The son of a Randis businessman, Rudy purchased his Green Knight as scrap through his father’s business contacts.  Despite
retiring to run the family business after his father’s death, Rudy has kept the ‘Mech that saved his life on Basra in the family, using
it to train his daughter, Britney.

Overall, it's a good concept. But ... why primitive everything else, and then ERLL & LPPC? Cognitive dissonance.

If they're specifically imported, at great expense, just for the use of regimental commanders, then call it out. But that's at a contrast to the rest of the design.

I realise there's not a good low-tech set of equivalents with 11 tons of mass to play with, but maybe a PPC, a pair of LRM-5s, and drop the heat sinks to 12? That'll keep your commander keeping the range open.

That might be better.  Do you think maybe the variants should be reversed, with the -C(P) a rare one-off variant?  It would seem to make more sense to me, anyway.
