Lykophos Mk.II
« on: 06 October 2017, 13:40:52 »
Still something of a W-i-P for me, I wanted to try my hand at reworking the old MFUK Lykophos. Can't seem to make a viable heavy laser version though, and the underwater version simply escapes me. based on Heavy Gauss's custom minis (pics below) and the MFUK artwork, I originally intended this design to features missiles in the body and various other weapons to be arm-mounted.

That said, I've developed a few alternate configurations and would welcome civil thoughts and suggestions concerning them.

NOTE: This design was NEVER intended to be OPTIMIZED to the fullest extent of the rules, but rather is intended as an exercise in revamping an old and forgotten design.
===========
The Lykophos Mk II was developed as an upgraded version of the antiquated Lykophos omnimech. The new 'Mech differs from its obsolete originator by having a heavier equipment capacity and improved armor protection. Interestingly, the Lykophos Mk II was developed with modular torso weapon bays primarily intended for use with missiles, often pairing them with arm-mounted energy or ballistic weapons. Unlike it's originator, instead of Ferro-Fibrous armor the Lykophos Mk.II makes use of Endo Steel construction to save weight. The original fixed jump jets were also removed, instead making them an optional addition.

I understand that it isn't meant to be optimized, but the fact that you can stick some heat sinks into the engine and don't seems like a crime.  The only one of the bunch I'm not real fond of is the Prime.  There is quite a bit of waste by trying to do to much.  LRMs with Artemis and ER PPCs with a TC which combined can't be all used in an AS without substantial heat build up.

The D appears to be the only design that would really have to change to make this a reality.  I'd suggest using LB-5s rather than 10s.  While this is clearly a move that optimizes, it makes sense as the LB5 shares weapons ranges with the LRM.  That keeps your potential damage in the same neighborhood as the original design, but will have less spread, but better range.  It is also marginally warmer.  If an when I wake up today I'll look over the H and U configurations.

You lost me here. Not sure what you're trying to say exactly.

As for the Prime, I'll admit the TC might be a waste. I really wanted the ER-PPC/LRM-20 only combo, and had tonnage left over, so I added the TC. I'm willing to rethink that.

Firesprocket can feel to correct me, but I think they're referring to the fact that you've left the base chassis with only 10 DHS and any additional heat sinks have to be mounted outside the engine. Most Omnis include some extra engine mounted heat sinks if they can, although having looked at the original Lykophos it's an exception to that rule.

Ah, now I see the issue.

I've been using MegaMekLab, and with the omnimech box checked it only showed 10 free heat sinks. I didn't think more about that when designing the various configurations. Unchecking the omnimech box shows 12 free HS, so I'll revise that accordingly.

Of course, it'll reduce the available pod space equally so I may need to go back to the drawing board.  ;)

Hmmmm...., I think I just found a flaw in MegaMekLab.

Regardless of how many free heat sinks an engine has, when you check Omnimech it reverts to only 10, forcing you to place any above that which should be part of the engine.

AND instead of showing "Carrying Capacity: One battle armor squad" is shows "!MechView.CarringCapacity!One battle armor squad" instead

Really? What happens when you open a cannon Omnimech? Are they effected?

Solaris Skunk Werks handles Omnimechs perfectly fine. On the other hand it hasn't been updated for 3 years and it does have some issues when it comes to some advanced tech that it does include.

When you open a canon omnimech, it's shows the heat sinks correctly. But if you modify it in any way in reverts to 10 again.

It's an odd issue, but after a quick test it looks to me like the development snapshot has resolved both bugs.

Now that I'm aware of the unexpected errors, here's a revised set of configurations for the Lykophos Mk.II project

===========

Speedbump's assumption on what I meant is correct.  I am somewhat sleep deprived today and am articulating even worse than usual.

Yeah, it's all good now. Good catch too, btw.

Based on the changes in tonnage from incorporating to increased number of embedded HS I either corrected or revised each of the various configurations

Whoever originally designed it from the MFUK group named it the Lykophos (which translates roughly from Greek λυκοφως (lykophos) "twilight" or λυκαυγές (lykauges) "morning twilight, dawn", derived from λυκος (lykos) "wolf" and αυγη (auge) "dawn, daylight". ), I just reused it sort of...

Its translation is "twilight", not shadow wolf.
Just found the name choice interesting.
