Generic Vees on the Cheap: Ogre Miniatures
« on: 22 November 2017, 18:52:12 »
About a week ago, I received a huge box from Steve Jackson Games containing my loot from the Ogre Miniatures 1 Kickstarter campaign. I've started painting them, and I'm very happy with the quality - and quantity - of models I got. The sets will be in stores pretty soon, and the price just can't be beat: $40 gets you 42 individual infantry (meant to be mounted 3 to each of the 14 bases), a command post building, 8 GEVs (hovercraft), 8 heavy tanks, 6 missile tanks, 4 howitzers (emplaced), and one each of an Ogre Mk III and Mk V. Set 2 is in the middle of its own Kickstarter campaign, and will include 18 more infantry, 6 superheavy tanks, 4 mobile howitzers, 12 light tanks, 12 light GEVs, 6 GEV personnel carriers, and one each of a Fencer and Ogre Mk IV.

So what does this have to do with BattleTech? Most of these units make fantastic stand-ins for BT vehicles. In the Set 2 campaign comments, someone already said they plan on using LGEVs as Savannah Masters, and I suggested the SHVY and missile tank would make great Demolishers and Hunters, respectively. The cybertanks - Fencer and Ogres - would need custom designs, being gigantic, but I'm interested in hearing what folks would use the other miniatures for in BattleTech.

I've attached a picture of what each set includes (black background are Set 1, white background are Set 2).

And to show some of the painted results, here's all my infantry and an Ogre Mk III. This actually shows 84 INF models, since of course I bought multiple sets. Not shown are the work-in-progress armor units nor the other four sets just to the left of these pieces.

This is in fact a primary reason why I bought into both Kickstarter campaigns.

Note thatin Campaign 2, $40 currently gets you -one- set.

$75 gets you -5-.

So, how big are the hexes on the map, inches-wise. How do the maps look?

Finally, how big are the infantry?

Here's a comparison shot. Ogre map on the left, BattleTech on the right. The unpainted red units are all from Ogre, the painted ones are BattleTech.

The current edition of Ogre uses larger hexes than BattleTech; I believe they're either 1.25" or 1.5" across. Ogre also has a simpler terrain system, so even the mixed-terrain "GEV" maps wouldn't really work for BattleTech.

As you can see, the minis scale nicely with each other. Ogre's tanks aren't as oversized as BattleTech's, and the INF are just a hair taller than the ancient Ral Partha footsloggers you see here.

Edit: And I just noticed that the missile tank is facing the wrong way. Whoops.

Ready to unload on that interloping Orion that's not from team red.

How about a big army picture? Here's two copies of Ogre Miniatures Set 1, plus eight extra HVYs from a Kickstarter bonus, all painted up. That's 84 infantry, 24 heavy tanks, 16 hovercraft (GEVs), 12 missile tanks, 8 howitzers, 2 command posts, 2 Mk III Ogres, and 2 Mk V Ogres.

I must say, some of those minis are dang close to some CBT models & would make great stand its.

I'm seeing stuff that basically looks like... Marksman, Savannah Master, Heavy Hover APC, Vedette, Demolisher, Behemoth, & Chaparral to name a few.

A lot of those sculpts were originally done for metal minis from Ral Parta; it's possible some of the same sculptors/designers worked on them as on old Battletech stuff.

Confirmed. Mike Naylor himself did several of the new designs Ral Partha released, along with Graham Chaffee, Dave Summers, Jeff Wilhelm, Dave Martin, and Richard Kerr (who went on to run SJ Games' internal miniatures line). But technically, all of these plastic pieces are new sculpts. SJ Games went fully 3D model with them, so while the designs date back as far as the 1970's, none of them are the actual old sculpts.
