(Answered) Refiting Omnis revisited
« on: 30 November 2011, 21:05:52 »
Now some time ago it was mentioned that most omni units that get refitted become standard units (though the ones in recent TROs give them the modular weapons quirk), and that was mentioned as proof that omnis can't be refit without letting out the omni-smoke.

There are a few omnis that seem to have multiple versions however, such as the Bandit that has an IS and Clan version that are both omnis and the Bolla with WoB and RotS versions, with the RotS Bolla specifically mentioning that it is a modification of the original by Maxwell-Pulaski Motors.  Would this mean an omni could have its fixed items carefully modified as a factory level refit?

You can redesign an Omni, at the factory. This becomes a new Omni. The Bolla WoB and Bolla RAF are two completely different units. Same with the Bandits.

If you refit an Omni, then you let out the Omni smoke and it is no longer an Omni.

So not enough to have engineers and a full shop on hand, you have to build from the ground up?
Bummer, thanks for the answer, even if it's not the one I was hoping for.

What exactly is the difference between a refit that changes everything about a mech, and a factory redesign?
Also do we have rules for construction?

We are only talking about Omnis. If you change any fixed equipment it becomes a custom variant that can't change omni pods. This is because the gyro had to be adjusted to the changes in fixed equipment.
