Hornet HRN-1Z
For many aspiring aerospace pilots, the Hornet is the first bird (and more often than they'd like to admit, only) they take to the skies in. The origins and development of the Hornet is a classic case of scope creep and mismanagement; the Terran Hegemony attempted to strip down and convert hundreds of obsolete Star Daggers into trainers for flight academies, with secondary combat capabilities. What greatly complicated matters was trying update the airframe with modern equipment and avionics at the same time, with the final design using so little of the original frame and components it was for all intents and purposes a new design.

By the 2500s, the blueprints and rights to the design, registered as the HRN-1Z Hornet, ended up being bought and sold around dozens of small local aerospace companies across the Inner Sphere. There were never a shortage of customers amongst border worlds, but profit margins always ended up inexplicably slim to none, with no manufacturer willingly holding onto the design for more than a couple decades at a time. At present the biggest culprit against profitability is the sheer number of producers, each with their own supply chains and resulting modifications to adapt to the variety of components. Hornet maintenance is and continues to be a nightmare outside of each individual Hornet's production region.

In the trainer role, the Hornet was a ubiquitous sight at backwater flight schools all around the Periphery and Periphery-ward worlds in the Great Houses. Between the  relatively high airframe protection and robust life support systems, the mortality rate of students and instructors are nonexistant compared to other trainer craft in its weight class. It was less successful as stopgap aerospace fighter capability. Slower than nearly all of its front-line contemporaries and significantly less-armed, Hornets were mostly used for in-system patrols with standing orders to report in and disengage from any contacts. The Hornet's combat record when used otherwise shows up often in case studies for operations officers on asset mismanagement.

(In a dark twist on the last statement, pirates became a common user of the Hornet, where the rare victories for Hornets almost exclusively came at Hornet vs Hornet duels between pirates and militia.)

Riever F-200
A dedicated anti-shipping model, the F-200 Riever is one of the last inbound IFF signatures any Dropship sensor operator wanted to see in the Succession Wars era. It exhibits what has been joked as Lyran-levels of subtlety due to the replacement of all missile weapons with two more Imperator Zeta-a assault autocannons and additional ammunition bays. FWLM naval officers aren't complaining about the losses inflicted on Lyran and Capellan dropships (and inattentive fighters) though.

That Riever is outright scary!

I think the Lucifer Brick variant I did with a Blazer Cannon would be in good company here...

That Riever is probably about as brick in the teeth as it gets for introtech customs. It all goes downhill from here, as I'm trying to stick with that tech level for the time being.

Agree that Riever is about as "Brick meet Face" as you can get with 3025 tech.  Though I actually like the Hornet, I mean yeah it's pretty crappy but you need small crappy designs too.  Not everything can be perfect and successful.

I've got plenty of those in the pipe, just need to figure out how much effort I want to put into fluff. They'll probably be single paragraphs unless inspiration strikes.

Lucifer LCF-R15R
Speaking of the Lucy...

The Lucifer -R15R owes its origins to what was supposed to be a simple contract extension negotiation that escalated into a nasty corporate litigation war. Lockheed-CBM had been licensing the Eagle aerospace fighter from Wangker Aerospace, and the license was up for renewal in 2888. Then both firms received anonymous information that individuals in the other firms had been engaging in corporate espionage and insider trading. Accusations, then lawsuits started to fly followed by countersuits and even several incidents of industrial sabotage, breaking and entering, blackmail/extortion, and data breaches.

The LCAF Quartermaster, uncomfortable with losing access to a satisfactory dogfighter, tasked Lockheed-CBM with a crash program to develop a replacement, and by 2890 the Lucifer -R15R was rolling off the lines. Despite the short design cycle, the -R15R proved to be of satisfactory quality and performance during testing and initial deployments. However, by 2896 after state intervention from both the Lyran Commonwealth and the Federated Suns, Lockheed-CBM and Wangker had reached a settlement, including resumption of Eagle production in exchange for discontinuing the -R15R. After relations normalized again, this was amended to allow MRO support by Lockheed-CBM, and even occasional production runs as long as Eagle sales quotas were met first.

Transit TR-10R
A lack of Capellan-sourced fire support platforms resulted in the Transit -10R refit. The Tomodzuru was replaced with a pair of Magma Longbow-15 launchers, but the slab-faced launcher port covers on either side of the nose resulted in the unflattering nickname of "Cheese-Grater".

Slayer SL-15U
The Slayer -15U is the class's reputation for endurance taken to its logical extreme. The Zeus autocannon was replaced with two Lord's Light particle cannons which removes the ammunition dependency of the standard model. The cockpit was upgraded with reinforced and redundant O2 tanks and recyclers along with quality of life amenities including a flight-suit integrated pressurized waste disposal system.

Unfortunately a technical problem with the waste system would occasionally cause backwash into the pilot's flight suit, leading pilots to disable the system and resort to traditional methods. More often, long-endurance patrols were often called early due to "mechanical malfunctions", leading to bad morale from officers confronting pilots with falsified reports or cowardice. This came to a head when a disgruntled squadron laced the on-board water supply of their particulary obstinate Chu-i with laxatives before one such patrol.

While the issue was eventually resolved and the system worked normally, the resulting reputation had taken hold in the DCA; units operating the -15U inexplicably have a higher rate of disciplinary actions, and -15U flight operations are now colloquially referred to as "brown-eye flights".

Corsair CSV-12r
« Reply #10 on: 26 November 2017, 14:12:56 »
A long-running black market and embezzlement ring run out of the Mayetta PDZ resulted in, amongst other things, chronic cooling system breakdowns across the Draconis March in the early 2900s. Part shortages and low quality knockoffs frustrated the Bryceland DMM to the point they replaced the large lasers on their Corsair squadron with spare Federated Autocannon. The mass difference of the cooler-running ballistic weapons was more than made up for the removal of much of the poorly-running heat exchangers. Pilot experience was mixed to negative; better armor penetration wasn't worth a reduction in raw throw weight and ammunition independence, but there was less worry about the craft's systems locking up from overheating.

It became a moot point once a DMJ investigation finally rooted out the key members in the black market ring in 2921, with normal supply chains reestablished several years later. With that, the Corsairs were re-converted into the base -v12 model.
