News, Scandal, Propaganda, and the Art of Telling a Story
« on: 31 October 2017, 10:59:37 »
So in my desire to build a better living BattleTech world for myself and others I have compiled a list of news outlets partially compiled from the MekHQ devs and an Excel document I received some time ago but could not remember who from. I am missing some details on several sources and cannot verify the source for several others. Maybe someone more familiar with the various outlets can help out?

The original House books are probably the best source of potential media outlets.  Look for the boxed quotes...

The Clans primarily get “news” from the Chatterweb which though dominated by the Diamond Sharks/Sea Foxes has spread to all the Clans

It doesn’t seem to follow any official outline more like an interstellar rumour mill with lots of opinion

CNS may stand for two different things.

In Dawn of the Jihad, there are articles tagged with "CNS," and the posts are rather enthusiastic, so it certainly comes across as the Capellans doing the writing.

However, in Jihad Hot Spots 3070 (page 107) has one of the articles tagged as "Canopian News Service." So since I don't know the sources, your original source might be wrong to call it the Capellan News Services, and it should be "Canopian News Service" or there are two CNS out there.

That is what I am trying to figure out, if there was a change, or maybe the Canopians had a regional service with the same call letters, those can always be modified CNS for the CapCon and CpNS for the Canopians... Since I do not have all of the Faction books it makes it tough to find info, a lot is pulled from Sarna or from the general flavor of the side blocks in the books I do have.

Gonna second digging through the Jihad Hot Spot books should get you a large number of news organizations. Here's some from JHS3070:
ISAP (Inner Sphere Associated Press?)
ARNN (Arc Royal News Network?)
Free Skye Press
New Home Herald-Guardian
TNS (Taurus News Service?)
XSFP (Xin Shang Free Press?)
And MERCNET had an affiliate on Galatea by 3068

That always confused me.  ChatterWeb seem to be form of Internet, with chat rooms.  Yet.  It can't be real time interstellar wise (unless their version of the HPG Network is insanely better).    I remember fluff where different Clan members were chatting together, when a Inner Sphere person somehow got in and was booted off for being a noob/wannabee.

Is there a source describing how the ChatterWeb works?  Who normally has access to it? Merchants Caste?

In the Dark Age there's Herrmans AG, said to control a major portion of Skye's press outlets. Sword of Sedition also gives us:

Free Radio, New Avalon
Stellar Associated, New Earth
ComStar InterStellar Associated, Terra
Terra Fashion Trends (a magazine)
Terra Today
Dynasty Daily, Liao
Avanti Free Press, Nusakan

Imminent Crisis gives us:
The Real Deal, Marik, FWL (holo newsmag)
Atreus Free Press
Taurus Broadcasting Company

I always thought Chatterweb users were everyone who wasn't a warrior.
There are warriors too, though it seems they often keep to their own chatrooms.

Yes that particular one was hilarious.

It seems there are chatrooms for Merchants as well as Warriors both; probably like any forum there are lots of different chatrooms covering different topics.

I can't remember any interplanetary Clan Chatterwebs. More often than not multiple Clans have enclaves on the same planets, so a planetary network could have members from many different Clans. Strana Mechty in particular would have all Clans present.

This is awesome! The big questions are, when are they active and what is their specific voice? I have been trying to look at modern news equivalents to base some of the articles off of. So far my best 1-to-1 comparison is to use MMA articles for the Solaris news outlets.

Edit: I tried to find the old BattleCorps site but it looks like it is 404'ed, where can I find those references you listed?

I think the Chatterwebs are primarily planetary based but I think people on JumpShips can link into them.

I also think there is some sort of HPG element to it (with the number of HPGs the Clans have that wouldn't surprise me)

Essentially I tend to look at the Chatterweb as a Twitter for shorter messages or even BT forum type of communication

I have that on the main list as well as a few articles circulating from the mag itself, the challenge for me is capturing the feel of the articles without copying them directly.

Found a few more in the House Handbooks and filled in a little bit more slant or "voice" details for a couple of them. If anyone can help with identifying any more of these that would help.

I think a few where the names are slightly different, e.g. Federated Broadcasting Corporation and Federated Broadcasting Service, are probably the same but whoever was doing the proofing did not catch the difference.

So far, the Draconis Combine services and the Capellan Confederation seem to have the least media. I haven't been able to turn up anything for the Free Rasalahague Republic.

Alright, looking at some of these again, I can only assume that every planet has some form of news reporting outlet for local news. That being said, similar to the way that we get news today, outlets at a national or international level will pick up local news and report it out to a larger audience. Local outlets will take larger news and report it down, maybe alter it for their specific market. News from the CC heading into the St. Ives Compact for example, might end up skewed away from the pro-Capellan origins towards a more pro-independent Compact message.

Additionally, since many of these are one entry mentions in various rulebooks or fluff-text, any that cannot be verified as independent from, but are similar to verifiable agencies, will be moved to aliases or considered the same outlet for this list.

Galaport Screamer's location should be Galatea.  Galaport is the name of the main starport and its suburbs serving the capital city - Galatean City.
"We have made of New Avalon a towering funeral pyre and wiped the Davion scourge from the universe.  Tikonov, Chesterton and Andurien are ours once more, and the cheers of the Capellan people nearly drown out the gnashing of our foes' teeth as they throw down their weapons in despair.  Now I am made First Lord of the Star League, and all shall bow down to me and pay homa...oooooo! Shiny thing!" - Maximillian Liao, "My Triumph", audio dictation, 3030.  Unpublished.
