Been thinking about how to "improve" a little the variable damage rules as get low rolls can be frustrating, but the all or nothing of the standard rules also feels a little wrong.
So I concluded that maybe using the margin of success of an attack can improve the damage potentials like this:
-weapons attacks still use variable damage (each damage is one die, rolls of 1 or 2 do no damage, minimum 1 damage ).
-but for your MoS makes one of those dice fixed damage.
Ex.
Your MoS is 0: use variable damage as normal.
Your MoS is 1: you roll one less dice of damage, as one of those became a 1 fixed damage.
Your MoS is 2: you roll two less dice is damage, as two of those became two fixed damage.
An so on...
