Always found the Penetrator to be one of the most effective Inner Sphere designs. It also has one of the most innuendo-laden names. The one I run is piloted by Rear Admiral Rod Shaft.

Anyway, I REALLY like your upgrade. Everything is better. It never needed that silly AMS anyway. Just an explosion waiting to happen. Very well done. Buff Stick approved. BTW, Buff is Rod's Technician.

Except for price. It is about double the c-bill cost of a -6T or -4D, being closer to the price of a Falconer. Doesn't matter outside scenario or RPG play, but while it's a better mech on the tabletop, I'm not sure if it's worth two of the old model.

The new AMS is very much worth it, especally if you use the partial ammo rules. 6 pips is just about enough, depending on the opposition. Or you could dump it on the first turn if you're facing another Penetrator.

Unfortunately fitting those IJJs forced me to save weight every way I could..

AMS on mechs is for those that REALLY need extra protection IMHO. C3 spotters, C3 masters, slow assault mechs.

But mostly it's about role. The whole point of a Penetrator is a massed short-range laser battery, there are lots of mechs that can handle the medium range fighting.
