Miniature of the Fortnight #35: Stone Rhino/Behemoth
« on: 31 January 2018, 21:26:32 »
We start looking at the post-TRO 3050 Clan 'Mechs with one of the largest, and slowest, second-line BattleMechs available to the Clans, the Stone Rhino, or, for the Inner Sphere, the Behemoth.  To learn more about its history and using it in game, please see its 'Mech of the Week article.

Like most of the TRO 3055 Unseen, there have only been two sculpts available for the Stone Rhino (Behemoth):
  • The original Unseen resculpt released by Ral Partha (20-792).
  • The reseen sculpt released by Iron Wind Metals (20-332).
If you have any of painted any of these minis, Unseen or Reseen, please share.  We'd love to see them!

As always, thank you for reading and especially thank you to those who post.

Our next two fortnights will be: (Dates are approximations)
  • Inner Sphere (2/11): Victor and Lu Wei Bing
  • Clan (2/25): Vapor Eagle (Goshawk)

Resculpt on the left and original on the right.  Also both seem to be victims of my earliest wash attempts.

In my opinion one of the most stylish old sculpts versus one of the worst resculpts ever. Although i own both it will take a lot of hack and tinker before i get paint on the resculpt abomination (never ever will i keep these Z-shaped legs, the top mounted air intakes, the twin barrel turret or the heavy laser mishmash). Astonishingly i have not painted my old sculpt either. The only Behemoth i painted so far was done as a commision job.

This Behemoth is part of clan Blood Spirits Tau galaxy.

The original Japanese design is so much more sexy than anything that came later on. Designers should have a long look at those lines and try to understand what makes em so unique. The design that came out after the original did the same mistake that I already posted about in the Shimmering Swords thread. They just tried to recreate some random characteristics without understanding the original design language. Nothing, except some other Unseens, has had this vibe to it. Plus it really fit the Battletech universe since the overly silly Gundamesque mechas with swords and shields have been avoided. Whoever picked those illegal copies had a good taste. Unfortunately....illegal.

It's been a long time since painting either sculpt. One on the to-do list, but a completed one has been years.

Two old sculpts, and one reseen modded to the very nasty 3 variant... which on the table managed to last one whole turn before taking a shot to the head that landed dual sensor crits. That was not a good day.  :'(

I have to ask what you used for the arms and gun. I have a Stone Rhino that fell prey to the thin shoulder syndrome that plagues the older sculpt. No way to re-pin it, so looking to swap out.

I really like the look for this.

The guns appear to be from Reaper's CAV line, especially the arms. The Dorsal gun I'm not 1005 sure on though

I wouldn't consider it a different sculpt by any means, but there is a variation in the Unseen minis. Early minis have a weak spot in the middle of the upper arms that broke... often. There were enough complaints, by snail mail and/or phone I presume, that Ral Partha had that point beefed up.

They are from the CAV line. The arms are from the Tiger and the Dorsal gun is from a Mammoth.
