since it appears that I cannot post to your blog for whatever reason (maybe it just doesn't like Opera) I'll post here.
You asked "what have I overlooked"
Well... how about The Enemy Below, The Caine Mutiny, and Mr. Roberts -- in that order? The progression is from Serious to Screwball -- I always like to end on a screwball comedy.
The first is so good every sci-fi (including trek) rips it off sooner or later.
Caine mutiny is a venture into the absurd, with stopoffs at irony and shame.
Which is great to follow up with probably the best USN screwball comedy ever. Mr. Roberts is one of the funniest movies made in the middle of a war -- and even the tragic ending brings a laugh with it.
Though my all-time favorite military moview is 100% absurd comedy, to blazes with reality.
"No Time for Sergeants" starring Andy Griffith. If you've never seen it, I highly suggest it.
Surprised at the lack of pacific theatre -- Tora Tora Tora, Midway, Naked and the Dead...
Admittedly, I'm not that big on the war in the Pacific myself -- Anything with Nazi's is funny. To quote a lady friend "Nuns are funny, they're like Nazi's that way." (to put that in context, she was referring to "the sound of music")
Moe: I want you to blow out your brains!
Nazi: But mein Fuhrer, we are Nazi's, we have no brains!
Moe: Well blow out whatever you've got then...
Oh... which reminds me... "Inside the Third Reich" - VASTLY underrated TV movie that made us all go "Wait.. You mean Rutger Hauer can ACT?!?" (in almost the same way Tombstone did for Val Kilmer).
Also happy to see "Cross of Iron" listed -- you are quite correct that it's often overlooked despite possibly being Pekinpah's best flick... of course I'm a huge fan of BOTH Schell and Coburn -- so it's automatically made of /WIN/
