Merlin vs Lung Wang P2
« on: 17 February 2018, 08:19:13 »
In a straight up fight, starting at a distance. Who wins in a fight between a Merlin (the original version) and a Lung Wang P2?

Assuming no support. No fighters.

I'd settle for odds and probabilities. This is just something I'm working on, comparing a FWL naval force to a Capellan naval force.

The Lung Wang P2 likely wins a significant majority of the time.  I estimate somewhere between 75-90% of the time.  The sub-capital weapons allow for a couple of earlier shots on its opponent, and then it has a heavier potential damage output from both the nose and wings.  The slight edge the Merlin has in maneuverability and armor isn't going to be enough to reliably overcome the firepower of the Lung Wang P2, imo.

The Lung Wang has no wing mounted weapons, it is a spheroid design. Don't know if this changes anything in the predicted outcome.

Why don't you get ten pairs of players to volunteer to run ten distinct sets of games. It would be interesting to see the Shiva-S in action in one set. The Merlin is quite good at covering carriers and other key vessels from fighters, in part because it seems designed with the assumption that it's job is to preserve your supremacy, not to obtain it. In this case of using a Merlin to hunt a PWS, why not use fighters designed to deal with similar craft in experiment.

It's an interesting idea, and if anyone wants to run with it, feel free. But unless anyone thinks Vition's numbers are really off it tells me what I wanted to know.

I'm doing research for a writing game I'm part of. It's not even tabletop or MegeMek. Just writing/Roleplaying, and I am going to be writing about some navy stuff. So I am filling some knowledge gaps.

Thanks, this is a great help!

Nope, it does...

It has an LB10, ERL, ER PPC, paired ML and a MPL per wing.

The vessels are much more even than is being presented, with subcaps lacking the range advantages of capitals (Though http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=53024.msg1386795#msg1386795), and the Merlin having a frightful fore itself.

Not really, here's a breakdown at each range using standard weapons scale (technically the SCL/3s are one hex short of the maximum Extreme range for this scale, but isn't enough to disqualify this as a general example):

(Extreme/Long/Medium/Short)
Lung Wang P2
 131/162/193/21

Merlin
 00/11/13/18

1: 9 of which is only suffering medium range penalties and can bracket to reduce penalties further
2: 9 of which is only suffering medium range penalties and can bracket to reduce penalties further
3: 9 of which is not suffering any range penalties and can bracket to reduce penalties or gain bonuses.

I'll note that in each case I'm using the nose and one side, it's not until they get to short range that the Merlin's maneuverability will allow it to have any sort of advantage - basically, if it wins initiative when at short range it can avoid most of the Lung Wang's damage, but the same can be said in the reverse.  The truth is the Lung Wang P2 has an advantage at all ranges, and significant advantages in the extreme and long range brackets.

Note: Maxxx was correct that both ships are spheroids and thus do not have wings, I had taken that into account when I made my prediction (calculating based off a single side adding to the nose damage), so it doesn't change anything.

That is correct. And the difference between a front side and a wing is very important.
