Title: Support Vee designers: Cobra VTOL Transport under SV rules
Post by: Revanche on 31 August 2017, 13:42:46
I'd appreciate a confirmation/check from fans on these issues regarding the Cobra VTOL Transport (TRO: 3075, p. 170).

First off, it's built not as a fixed wing VSTOL support vehicle, but as a VTOL support vehicle, despite the art of turbines on the wings. I kinda let this one go because the (true) original Cobra VTOL (XTRO: Primitives, V. II, p. 10) did have rotors instead of turbines, and I'm presuming the chassis was kept when the design was upgraded. [handwave] But, in the end, rules supplant art.

Second is armor. 3075 has the design equipped with 48 points of armor, for 3 tons. However, TechManual (p. 134) says a 30-ton VTOLcannot carry more than 34 points.

Third is also armor: I've also presumed the armor is BAR 10, since no indication of BAR amount is made, suggesting standard armor is used.  Standard armor is illegal on SVs, though BAR 10 is the civilian equivalent. This is my weakest presumption, but presuming my logic works, BAR 10 is insupportable, as Tech E (and F) armor must have 2 reserved slots, which is restricted to 8, for the 30-ton Cobra). Edit: okay, this one I can downgrade to Tech D, though even though the 'modern' original Cobra (vice the Age of War 'original') would probably make use of the SLDF's best armor. However, Tech D armor points would have to drop to 31 points, to meet the half-ton allotment.

Fourth is overweight, by 11 tons by my count. 3075 has it with 10 heat sinks, when it only needs 3, plus the weaponry, ammunition, and 10-ton cargo bay through it over. I can recover 7 tons by deleting that many heat sinks, but the cargo bay will now drop to 6 tons.

Can we just assume the 3075 was just shoehorned in from the outdated TRO: 3026 as is, instead of being built to the Support Vehicle construction rules? Or did I massively miss a relevant rule?

The Cobra absolutely is a Combat VTOL, as indicated by notation (pointed out by yourself) and its placement in the book. As a Support Vehicle, it would be listed after the Combat Vehicles, only TRO Prototypes makes an exception to that order.

Hope that helps!

That does! Ok....I'm not sure where I noted that but, yes, you're right, it's not an SV. I went down a rabbit hole with the unchallenged presumption it was a support vehicle, never considered the armor meant it was a CV.

Thank you.
