I have to admit, I have a hard time settling into a favorite unit. I have had a lot of success lately with a mixed star of 3 points clan heavy jump infantry and two points clan fast recon infantry.
Do you have a favourite unit to use in a game and if so what?
-
Thunderbolt IIC, Nighwolf, Zeus-X
Gurteltier, Testudo, Cardinal
Slayer, Sabutai
Have worked for me in the past
-
IS Standard/Salamander BA, Slayer/Jagatai for Aero, Commando/Hellion, Phawk/Storm Crow, Hercules/Summoner, and Thug/Gargoyle for Mechs.
-
WVR-6M, Ontos (LGR), Achileus. I've never played aero, but if I did, I'd want to take a Shiva for a spin. Who needs armor with that much pod space?
-
I play mostly 3025, so my preferences in that era would be Spiders & Jenners for lights, Hunchbacks for mediums, the venerable Thud or Marauder-Ms for heavies, and Awesomes or Stalkers for assaults. For tanks, love Manticores or even lowly Scorpions for support, as well as Savannah Masters or J. Edgars. Never played aero so I have no opinion on that.
Damon.
-
Warhammer, the 7A and 8D are beast. Thunderbolt 5SS and 9SEare excellent troopers. I have had allot of luck with the Banshee 3S as of late. Clan, the Timber Wolf will always been my favorite.
Tanks, I really enjoy the Demolisher and Rommel, simple and effective.
Never used Aero but I always liked the look of the Shilone and Sabtai.
-
'Mech:
Wolfhound WLF-1A; Wraith TR1; Thunderbolt 5SE -> 9SE (5SE until the 9SE is available.); Nightstar NSR-9J
Vee:
Drillson; Bandit; Schrek PPC
Aero:
Haven't used.
Battle Armor:
Purifier, but I feel dirty about it.
-
Mech: Well for looks the Wolverine II is a sexy beast, but I'll rip that UAC and put a PPC/ER PPC on it any chance I can get. I've grown to love the Royal Thunderbolt for toughness and damage, and have a soft spot for a stock Penetrator.
Vehicle: Cyrano plasma variant.
Aero: don't really get to use, but I like the Titan, does that count? :D
Battle Armor. Infiltrator II all the way.
-
I prefer 3025 play, so WVR-6Ms on that basis. I've found a soft spot for the Goblin in combined arms play (and built an entire planetary militia around them down in Non-Canon Units). I also have an unreasonable love of the Ferret VTOL, especially after they introduced Recon Cameras for 3025 use.
-
Mechs: Centurion, Wolfhound, Zeus, Gauntlet, Cougar, Karhu, Septiscemia
Vehicles: Rommel/Patton, Zephyr, Cizin, Cavalry
Aerospace: Sabre, Shilone, Hammerhead, Sulla
Battle Armor: Fenrir II, Infiltrator Mk II, Clan "Rabid" Battle Armor
Protomechs: Roc, Triton, Boggart
Dropships: Aurora, Fortress, Mercer
Jumpships: Odyssey
Warships: Inazuma Corvette, Riga II Frigate

Someone else's dice.
-
Blackjacks ;D

Someone else's dice.
Are you allowed to field those often? :D
-
Stormcrow, followed by Shadowcat. Good lord I love those two mechs.
For old tech I like the Jenner, Centurion, Marauder and Battlemaster. They are fun and have some good variants. Royal version of the Thug is great too!
For tanks I enjoy the Saladin because it causes such fear in the other players and the venerable Manticore for its utility and power.
Corsair for aero and the versatile Elemental for suits.
With that said, I try to play with every unit and am trying some of the newer stuff. I even enjoy the weaker units like Jagermechs and Banshees as they can be fun too if you use them right.
-
One mech for each weight class: Jenner, Shadow Hawk, Marauder, Stalker (yup, 3025 baby)
Vehicles: Rommel/Patton, Schreck PPC, and Behemoth. Like those big tanks ;D
-
Here is a question, have you ever played a unit that you did not care for that you were suprisingly successful with?
I am not a fan of the Atlas (sacrilage, I know) but I drew one randomly in a game, a gauss variant, and things just clicked. Also I never really liked the Manticore, but it was the tank I was using when I won my first ever game, after over 20 years of near misses.
-
I haven't really used vehicles/fighters/battle armor much, so I'll have to stick with favored 'Mechs:
Catapult: C1, C1b, and C5A variants
Longbow: 12C and 13C
Ti T'sang-9H
Pillager-4Z
Thunder-1L
Huron Warrior: any GR/ERLL variant
Anubis:MML variant
Vindicator: 1R, 3L, 3Lr, 4L

Yes, the Vindicator. Does not overwhelm in any range bracket, but the thing is a real trooper!
Damon.

Im a huge fan of the Karhu and take it every chance i gwt. Otherwise i love using any version of the mad dog.
-
You forgot to ask for non-canon designs.
I've got a maxed-out 'Super Guillotine' I designed for my AU I used to take into every game I was allowed to. Canon one with the ER-large isn't bad, either.
A 12-ton Extra-Light Mech (ELM) similar to a Protomech called the Striker (after the soccer position).
A 40 ton APC called the Grapeshot - C3-linked vehicle with four rocket launcher trailers or MM/8.
No real ASF, but twin-engined small craft for the assault/fighter/bomber role I call a 'FighterShip'. Can fire a single nuclear Cap missile from an internal bay.
Canon?
No real 'Mechs, I'm a pick-and-chose kind of guy.
Rommell/Patton tanks, or the 8/12 hovercraft with an Ultra/20 from the DA.
No real battlearmor or Protos.
-
Mechs - Venom / Ryoken / Guillotine / Awesome
Vehicles - Joust / Regulator / Yellow Jacket / Chevallier
Battle Armor - Purifier / Clan Medium
Protos - Roc / Minotaur
I also have a lot of love for the standard IS laser jump infantry platoon

I will forever love the stock Vulcan after our campaign GM made the mistake of presenting a fixed fortification without weapons that outranged an AC/2. We had to reload that thing a few times, but the fortification was reduced with no damage to our forces.

...And the GM learned a valuable lesson that fixed fortifications are much less effective if you don't have mobile forces as well...

There's a general theme going on here, but I can't quite place my finger on it.
-
Mechs: Spector 5F / Wolverine 6M / Thunderbolt 5Sb / Highlander 732 (or 732b or 733)
(Honorable Mention: Mongoose/Wraith/Warhammer/Battlemaster)
Vehicles: Myrmidon
Aero: Corsair or Stingray
-
A good old fashion Crusader mech.
-
Mechs: Grendel, Zeus, Thunderbolt, Enforcer
Vehicles: Manticore, Hunter, Vedette
-
For me it has to be the Stormcrow, whilst I do not get to use it as often as i would like it always seems to do well for me.

Was my avatar not enough of a hint?

I was going to say they all had an odd number of letters but the Tokugawa screws they up
Back to square one...

Ive got several favorites in each class; hard to pick just one. Not surprising I tend to play a lot of mercs and FWL (although I hate UAC’s and try to avoid IS ERLLs).
Assault: Awesome (Berserker is a close second. Those things are just scary)
Heavy: tie between the T-bolt (especially the 7SE—I get a crazy amount of headcaps with it) and the Orion.
Medium: wolverine (6M and 9M) and the Huron Warrior
Light: Night Hawk
On the clan side of things:
Assault: Savage Coyote C (this either really works or really falls apart)
Heavy: Night Gyr
Medium: Stooping Hawk (especially C)
Light: Hellion
-
Mechs
Assault : Rampage, so so beautiful .
Heavy: Marauder , the whole reason I got into Btech
Medium : Shadowhawk, The New Classic won me over
Light:Javelin awesome little speedster
Tanks:Saracen, great looks and multiroll unit.
Infantry: Ravager and Marauder. What can I say I'm a Marion fan.
Aero: Shilone again because of the Marians
-
A good old fashion Crusader mech.
You sir are a brave man.
-
in a lot of ways it depends on the era.
with that said I have been a huge fan of several mechs for a long time:
marauder, 3R, 3D in 3025ish 5S in 3050
Phoenix Hawk
I also really like the Marauder II's
for the Clans I like the timberwolf, and Direwolf a lot
there are of course a lot of other designs I like, along with a bunch of personal custom designs like the "wolf pup" which I have posted in the custom mechs section
-
It's hard to pick just one.
Lights: The Locust is the quintessential light mech for me. I'll take any variant but the 5M and the 6M are particular favourites. Honorable mentions to the spider and the Jenner too.
Medium: This was a much more difficult choice for me as there are a lot of good mediums out there but I'd have to go with the Wolverine especially the 6M or the 7K or the 7M or well everything but the 6R. Honorable mentions though to the Wraith and P-Hawk.
Heavies: Again a difficult choice but I have to go with the Orion. If it was good enough for Kerensky and good enough for Teddy K it's good enough for me. Again especially fond of the 2M but I'll take any variant of the Orion. Honorable mentions to the Archer and the Barghest though.
Assaults: Stalker no questions asked. It's a threat at damn near every range and I'd take nearly every model of it bar the godawful Stalker II. Honorable mentions to the Pillager and the Awesome for doing the stand and deliver assault mission better than anything else.
Battle Armour: The elemental is still the gold standard of BA. Other suits may outperform it in specific roles but as a general purpose BA it's hard to beat. For the Inner Sphere though nothing quite induces such pants-filling terror as a Grenadier or a Kopis in a dark alley.
Tanks: Pegasus is the light tank for me. Fast enough to dodge. Heavily armed enough to be a threat to any mechs rear armour. On the heavier side there's the Alacorn and the Demolisher but my favourite is still the Ontos I'm particularly fond of the Light Gauss version and the LRM version.
Aero I can't comment on because I never play with Aero although I will learn how someday...
-
Do note that I really do not have much experience with the tabletop game so some of these are just ideas that I like or sometimes what visuals I like.
Battle armor- elemental mostly since it is the only one I know of and I also know it is effective.
tank- Patton mostly for the look it actually looks like a tank.
Aerospace fighter-corsair because it looks cool and has a lot of energy weapons.
light mech- spider. Honorable mention the Urbanmech because it is hilarious though I am bad and give mine a PPC.
medium mech- phoenix hawk and wolverine if older tech and the Agrotera if newer. Honorable mention bushwacker.
heavy mech- grasshopper and thunderbolt. Honorable mention of the catapult.
Assault mech- battlemaster unless I am allowed my version of an atlas in which case the atlas. Honorable mention thug due to mechwarrior 2 mercenaries.
Mech Assault- Thor because 4 machine guns wins the game no joke. Also heavy mech with jump jets.
favorite weapon- PPC Seriously most of the mechs on my list either have one or I give them one usually instead of autocannons which I tend to dislike.
favorite equipment- jump jets because I always want to get everywhere.
-
Mech: Spector-5F, my custom Phoenix Hawk (if stock a -6D), Warhammer-8D, and the Devastator-2.
Vehicles: Alcorn Mark 6, Challenger X MBT, Yellow Jacket VTOL, and Myrmidon.
Battle Armor: Infiltrator Mk. II, Hauberk, and Nighthawk.
Areo: Corsair, Dagger, and Stuka-D7.
Its a heavy Davion lineup, but that is just my style.

Here is a question, have you ever played a unit that you did not care for that you were suprisingly successful ?
The Jagermech went from a mech i loathed like most to being a mech I respected when playing the sword and Dragon Starterboook with my wife, and David Hills Jagermech became the MVP of the campaign. Across an 18month deployment, he scored 37 killshots or assists including killing Shannon Burghoz (ammo explosion) Emory Wilk (failed seatbelt check) and Eldin Beradenelli (cored) in the final confrontation with the Sabres.
