New Weapon Help
« on: 20 February 2018, 23:46:32 »
Hello community,

In an AU I hava a faction based on the Empire from Star Wars. As far as tech goes, structurally they have Clan-Level tech.

Weaponry is IS weight and Crit space, but with Clan Damage/Range.

Now, given that in Star Wars they rely almost exclusively on energy based weapons, I was considering changing the damage to be higher to make up for the lack of hitting power compared to say an AC 20. Perhaps reducing the range from Clan levels to standard IS laser levels (so still greater than IS Pulse wepaons, but not Clan level) at the same time?

what might an appropriate increase or is this eaven a reasonable idea?

Well, Heavy Lasers sort of does that already. You could even increase the damage a few points without hurting what little balance there is.

Clan ERPPCs and Heavy Large Lasers hit fairly hard(15 and 16 damage respectively). I'd probably give them Improved Heavies, if they're an energy-focused group. But if you want something else up in the AC/20 or Heavy Gauss range, maybe something like these:

ER XL Laser - 20 damage, 10/20/30 range, 35 heat, 10 tons, 6 slots

XL Pulse Laser - 20 damage, 8/16/24 range, 30 heat, 14 tons, 8 slots, -2 to hit

ER Heavy PPC - 25 damage, 7/14/23 range, 25 heat, 12 tons, 5 slots

They're getting into the realm where they're hard to use on practical mech designs, but for WarShip anti-fighter defences or for ground-based fortifications they'll be monstrous, and occasional specialized designs could roll out with them as well. (Note that these were balanced by gut, not by math, so I make no promises that they're fair. And of course, a faction that has this kind of kit should also have drawbacks somewhere else - maybe no advanced missiles and no Gauss tech?)

XL Pulse Laser?  Sounds like "Turbo Laser" to me... :)

And that ER Heavy PPC has "Ion Cannon" written all over it...

You, sir, are better at naming things than I am.

I think George Lucas gets the original credit there, but I'll take what I can get, thanks! O0

Actually, if you go by Effect, ion cannons would be better replicated by Tight Stream EMP cannons rather than PPCs.
