White Rhino and Triceratops: Assault Quads for melee.

Based on a comment from garhkal in the Best melee mechs thread, I present two versions of the White Rhino and the Triceratops technology demonstrator design. Just because I wanted to be weird.

Overview:
The Triceratops is a technology demonstrator intended for use in the Solaris  arena games. Innovative Design Concepts used wanted to discover how the talon  system would combine with the stability of an assault quad design. The design  also uses several other experimental systems for testing in the arenas. The  'Mechs name comes from the three laser systems mounted in its head and was  suggested by one of the lead engineer's daughters.

Capabilities:
The Triceratops carries two torso mounted ER Large Pulse Lasers as its primary  armament. This allows it to cover itself as it charges towards an opponent. For  additional close in firepower the nearly empty head of the Triceratops carries  three pulse laser systems. Though these lasers can inflict heavy damage, they  pale in comparison to the damage inflicted by the leg-mounted talons.

Each successful kick by the Triceratops inflicts more damage than a class 20  autocannon. In fact the target will receive 96% of the damage of a short range  Heavy Gauss Rifle hit. This is capable of removing legs from opponents.

To get the talons into action as quickly as possible, the Triceratops has been  fitted with the largest Clan-spec XXL Engine that can fit in the 'Mech. This  engine has a Supercharger fitted, which allows the Triceratops to reach burst  speeds of 108km/h.

For protection the Triceratops uses a Torso Mounted Cockpit. This puts the  pilot in the center torso rather than the head.  Nineteen tons of  Impact-Resistant armor protects the 'Mech's chassis and has been proven to be a  good choice for a 'Mech more interested in melee combat. However due to the  bulk of the Impact Resistant armor, the designers were not able to fit a MASC  system into the chassis as they originally hoped.

The largest drawback to the Triceratops has proven to be the massive heat  generated by its weapons and engine. Equipped with only thirteen double heat  sinks in the massive engine, it is easy to quickly swamp the machine's cooling  system. As a result pilots are encouraged to close as quickly as possible and  use the low heat head weapons and no heat generating kicks as often as possible.

Overview:
The White Rhino is a design derived from the Solaris based Innovative Design  Concepts group's Triceratops. Originally intended for close combat in an arena,  the design was modified for use by standing armies by using more common  components. Only the inclusion of some uncommon weapons gives any hint of its  Solaris origin.

Capabilities:
The White Rhino is a quad design intended for physical combat. To this end, the  designers included talons on all four legs. When these talons hit, they inflict  more damage than a Hunchback's autocannon. To get into range quickly the White  Rhino is also equipped with a MASC and a Supercharger-enhanced XXL engine. When  both of those systems engage, the White Rhino reaches a top speed of 130km/h.  This allows the Rhino to deliver massive damage to a charged opponent.

The Large X-Pulse Lasers provide decent, if not overly impressive, firepower  for the design. To increase close in damage, the Rhino mounts three small pulse  lasers. The head mounted small pulse laser is often equipped with a cosmetic  modification to make it look more like the horn found on its Terran namesake.  Pulse lasers are used to help offset some of the inaccuracy generated when the  Rhino moves at top speed.

Other major differences between the White Rhino and the Triceratops is the use  of a standard cockpit, standard armor plate, and a MASC system. In the  Triceratops these  systems are replaced by a torso cockpit and Impact Resistant  Armor. In addition all Clan-spec systems are replaced by their Inner Sphere  equivalents.

Variants:
Based on the original White Rhino, the 2RN model places more emphasis on  the damage inflicted by kicks.

Overview:
Based on the original White Rhino, the 2RN model removes the MASC system,  compact gyro, and small pulse lasers of the original to place more emphasis on  the damage inflicted by kicks. Replacing the missing systems are a standard  gyro, single medium pulse laser, triple strength myomers, and a modified heat  dissipation system that allows the pilot to quickly maintain and balance the  'Mechs heat output to maintain the ideal temperature range for the advanced  myomers. When active the myomers double the damage inflicted by a successful  kick attack, which can rip off the legs of most 'Mechs.

Nice call out..  And they looked nice..  I wonder, could one mount a lance on the quad, and turn that lance into a 'horn' charge??
