Semi-Canon: 7th Lyran Guard
« on: 09 November 2015, 20:53:26 »
*Notes* While the 7th Lyran technically exist, nothing is known about them other than they are listed within the brigade. After that there is no mention of them anywhere else. So I took the liberty to create my own unit within the scope of what the universe would allow me to.

7th Lyran Guards RCT
Comstar Report HUR-43528-L
March 31st, 3067

Founded: 2346
Allegiance: LCAF/LAAF
Current CO: General Alaric Raskoph
Nickname: Owstein “Brave Ones” (Pre-3064), Raskoph’s Rascals (Post 3064)
Motto: Deeds, not words
Mission Profile: Adaptable
Current Deployment: Bountiful Harvest - LAAF

Overview:

Among the old guard, even for the Lyran Guard, the 7th enjoys a stellar record with only a few minor upsets. While other regiments have gained greater glory which made their commanders holovid superstars, the 7th have dutifully executed their oath of service without pause. The social general does not exist in the 7th, as long standing tradition demands its commanders be born in the fires of war and not in a gilded crib. This has earned them some ire from others in their brigade.

Origins:

Raised in the Arc Royal Theatre sometime during 2346 alongside the 6th Lyran Guards, the regiment was seemingly passed over on new equipment. Instead it seemed that the 6th got all the toys while the 7th had little more than rocks to shoot with. It took nearly three years to finally bring the regiment up to full strength.

During that time its commander, Hasso von Manteuffel, showed stunningly brilliant tactics involved around mobile warfare. His skill was so impressive that he eventually inspired a Lyran tank design centuries later.

History:

Not much is known about their actions pre-Succession Wars era. All we have is a citation of valour reading, “The 1st Battalion, 7th Lyran Guards advanced the center line at great cost to the enemy and themselves. Their meritorious action under great fire secured a victory for the realm and earned them the highest honour any unit can receive.” From that point on the regiment was nicknamed Owstein or “Brave Ones”.

Second Succession War

The unit saw action on Hespersus II against the DCMS troops. While they suffered heavy losses, the 7th was able to help repulse the Kuritan troops from the planet. This campaign also saw a rapid shift in their regimental doctrine as static defense never sat well with them. Instead they relied on hit and run ambushes and engaging on ground of their choosing.

After the war was called to an end, the 7th was left on Hespersus II to rebuild.

Third Succession War

Called again to Hespersus II, the 7th formed the center line of Lyran forces against the raiding Wolf’s Dragoons. Forced into another static fight, the 7th adapted by using a fluid battle line to lure Wolves into traps and destroy them.

At one point in the battle it is noted that the 1st Company, 1st Battalion engaged heavy elements from the Omega Regiment. They were pushed back to very thick woods and rocky terrain and could not retreat further. True to their name they stood their ground and held against the Wolves inflicting heavy losses. The last mechs standing were three from Colonel von Funcke’s command lance. Their ferocity in defending their downed commander earned them respect from the Wolf’s Dragoons who allowed them to recover their wounded and retreat from the field. This action earned the 1st Company the moniker Leibgarde.

Fourth Succession War

At the start of the war the regiment was only rebuilt to just over half strength. Thusly, they were held back until later in the war where they were deployed on the planet Skokie. Though many green faces littered the regiment’s forces, the veteran commanders easily overcame the planet’s militia forces. They stayed deployed on Skokie until the end of the war.

War of 3039

Part of Operation Sturmhammer, the 7th invaded Dieron and met little resistance. Most of the other DCMS forces were concentrated elsewhere. The population did not sit well with their guest however and frequent raids on their patrols wore down the Lyrans’ resolve. Eventually they puled back with the rest of the Lyran forces when the DCMS counterattacked, leaving the world to be returned to Kuritan government.

Clan Invasion

Stationed on Trell with the 12th Donegal Guards, the 7th was conducting wargames and training exercises when forces from Clan Jade Falcon showed up. Though they lasted three weeks against the onslaught, ultimately they were forced off planet. The battered 12th Donegal volunteered to stay behind and tie up the Clan forces while the 7th evacuated as many civilians as they could.

Though they escaped, they were not without their own wounds. Over fifty-percent of the RCT laid dead or missing on Trell. What was left limped back to Arc Royal in hopes to find a safe haven for the thousands of civilians crammed aboard their dropships.

To this day Battlemechs and vehicles of the 7th Lyran Guard units on Trell at the time paint a single shamrock with the number 12 in the middle on their machines to honour the sacrifice the regiment made.

FedCom Civil War

Still licking their wounds from the invasion, the 7th jumped a good portion of their force back to Arc Royal. They were one of the few Lyran regiments still operating in the Arc Royal Defense Cordon. Torn between loyalty to the throne on Tharkad and their desire to keep the peace, the 7th remained neutral through the Civil War. They severed communications with the LAAF High Command and worked with the ARDC to strictly fight against Clan Jade Falcon.

It was in 3064 they participated in Operation Audacity to push back against the Jade Falcons invading along the border. They fought well against the mostly green Rho Galaxy. The veteran Clan fighters who were now in leadership positions outfought and out maneuvered their foe. After reporting to high command about his unit’s performance he said, “My rascals knew how to fight.” This quote trickled down through the ranks and ever since then the regiment has taken on the nickname of Raskoph’s Rascals.

Tactics:

While still adhering to the Lyran tactic of “bigger is better”, the 7th adds to that “as long as it moves quickly”. They are experts of lighting warfare, rolling over their opponent before they can set up defenses.

True to their heritage, they prefer combined-arms actions where they use their armoured regiments to great effect. It is not uncommon to see Battlemech forces spotting for artillery or supporting a column of advancing APCs with their expertly trained mechanised infantry.

Each battalion is typical broken down into three sections: Assault Company, Battle Company, and Lightning Company. The former being made up of the battalion’s heaviest forces while the latter tends to be lighter and faster. The notable exception is the 1st Battalion which has a command company labeled as Leibgarde Company, effectively making it a reinforced battalion.

Colours:

As with other Lyran Guards they use the Steiner Blue and White for parade duties. They employ appropriate camouflage for a particular campaign when needed.

It is always good to see someone writing up a competent Lyran military unit.
Not all could have been as bad as the stories keep telling us.
Nice write up. O0
I wish I could get a good grip on reality, then I would choke it.
Growing old is inevitable,
Growing up is optional.
Watching TrueToaster create evil genius, priceless...everything else is just sub-par.
