Miniature(s) of the Fortnight #36: Victor and Lu Wei Bing
« on: 11 February 2018, 20:22:18 »
Welcome to the Valentine's Day edition of Miniature(s) of the Fortnight, where Cupid uses not a bow and arrow but an arm-mounted AC/20.  After all, the fastest way to a 'Mech's heart is through its rear Center Torso armor.

Seriously, we're looking at two visually similar (but theoretically unrelated) 'Mechs this fornight, the Victor and the Lu Wei Bing.  The Victor has been with us a long time, dating back to TRO 3025, and the Lu Wei Bing is a relative newcomer, from TRO 3145.  They have similar weapon loadouts and similar movement profiles.  For more information, see the Lu Wei Bing's 'Mech of the Week article since the Victor does not appear to have a modern article.

The Victor has seen a few sculpts over the years:
  • The original sculpt released by Ral Partha (20-860).  This sculpt, or one based on it, may still be available in the Quick-Start Lance Pack (10-044).
  • The CityTech boxed set included a plastic miniature based on the original metal sculpt.
  • The resculpt released under the same product code (20-860).  I am not sure how this differs from the original sculpt.
  • The new plastic sculpt released by CGL as part of the Assault Lance Pack.  I do not know which metal sculpt this is based on.  (I suspect it is based on the sculpt used in the Quick-Start Lance Pack.)
  • A sculpt for the VTR-9K2 from XTRO: Pirates (CE-006).

A relative newcomer, the Lu Wei Bing only has a single sculpt (20-5121).

Please share any Victors or Lu Wei Bings you have painted.  We'd all love to see them.

As always, thank you for reading and especially thank you to those of you who will post.

Our next two fortnights will be: (Dates are approximations)
  • Clan (2/25): Vapor Eagle (Goshawk)
  • Inner Sphere (3/11): Clint

Here's mine:

It's a fairly heavily modified plastic citytech Victor. Painted up as draconis Ryuken Roku.

This put my Victor mini in the coffin. Its the perfect replacement although my Asperger kicks in whenever I try to use proxies.

Just getting started on this one..
Still have more patching and clean-up to go, but the pose turned out to work OK.

Removed torso, arms, head, and left-hand, with a surgical xacto blade.
Reattached the left-hand 90deg outwardly to hold the barrel.
Cut the inside of the RA elbow to allow for some minor articulation.
Pinned torso, head, and shoulders, then glued all in-place.

Needs weathering.
Needs decals.
Needs some touch-up.
Needs a better photographer...

But here's a Victor from the VI Legio. *Technically* Dark Age era, but... Meeeeh.

The Victor has seen a few sculpts over the years:

  • The CityTech boxed set included a plastic miniature based on the original metal sculpt.
  • The resculpt released under the same product code (20-860).  I am not sure how this differs from the original sculpt.
  • The new plastic sculpt released by CGL as part of the Assault Lance Pack.  I do not know which metal sculpt this is based on.  (I suspect it is based on the sculpt used in the Quick-Start Lance Pack.)
The original sculpt is crouched slightly, with both feet side-by-side (as though it is jumping or landing). The cannon barrel has a small raised panel on the inner side. There tends to be a defect on the upper right side of the rectangle on the jump jet pack and the attached base is oval.

The resculpt stands more upright with the right foot slightly behind the left, in a walking pose. The cannon barrel has a large raised panel on the inner side, and a small raised panel on the outer side.  The attached base is hexagonal.

The Quick Start Lance Pack (10-044) sculpt is based off of the resculpt, and CGL's plastic Assault Lance Pack version is a copy of the 10-044 sculpt. Both have a straightened right arm.

Got 404 errors on both of those ... my metal Victor kinda looks like its ready to take a dump.  Third link worked ok.
