Unless it's a one-piece sculpt, IWM minis are never shipped assembled.

How would I know if the mini in question is a one piece?

Unfortunately, you can't if you don't have the blister pack in front of you.  It's a very small minority of sculpts.  There are many where you only glue one to two piece.  Some are very complex and require a lot of effort.  I get by with an exacto knife, glue, a file, tweezers, and a pin vice (a pen-shaped hand drill with very small bits)

What he said. My advice is to plan for multi-piece, and be pleasantly surprised by the one-piecers.

My advice would be to say what you're interested in and people can tell you if there might be some trouble... the reseen Archer and Thunderbolt are two that are notorious for showing no mercy on novice modelers.

Dervish is all one piece.  Centurion is two - you have to glue on the gun arm.  I don't remember how many the Enforcer III is.

Standard model glue for gluing or super glue?

super glue, and wash the mini with soap and water first. The stuff they use in the molds sometimes prevents the glue from sticking properly

Thanks for the tips guys.  Once I buy some paint and have my friend paint them up I'll get pictures of them up online.

I would recommend getting a Pin Vise and learning to pin.  You basically drill a little hole in both the pieces you're about to glue together, and then stick a small piece of wire into the holes to add a little bit of structural integrity.  It's easy to do, takes a couple of minutes, but it really helps keep the mini together, especially in case it falls.  For most 'mechs you can use a 1mm drill bit and then paperclips cut to length for the wire.

Failing that, get a craft knife/scalpel and score the joins before you glue them together, it'll help the glue bond.

Don't forget glue accelerant for those tough buggers that just don't want to stick on their own. Sold at most hobby/model train supply stores.

The Apollo is one piece, and while a tad pricey at $12.50 for its size, is a very nice model.  And great in Quick-Strike!

Pfft Warhammer is easy mode compared to thin legged earlier model Marauder.
That was a great exercise in frustration, even Jedi would Force throw that across the room.

Yeah, the Warhammer arms were a pain, but I still point to the Archer's missile bay doors as my least favorite assembly.

The Archer I think was one of the first twenty I did. After assembling over 250 now, it probably wouldn't be nearly as frustrating. The much-maligned Thunderbolt legs were relatively drama free by the time I got to it last year.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  I wouldn't have minded the Warhammer's legs so much if they weren't a fixed pose.

I tried assembling a Rakshasa, but it defeated me.  Then I lost one of its guns. Game over.  I keep it in a blister hanging near my painting table to keep me humble.

Putty and some small objects to use as supports pretty much make every assembly a piece of cake.  The only variable is time.
