Purely my personal POV, but the Con Exclusive pieces are not aimed at the tabletop gamers at all. They're meant to be displays of IWM's technical proficiency, and to offer something the highly skilled painters can show their best on. In other words, they're semi-promotional.

Look at Reaper; they do their "Sophie" succubus each year in a new costume. Totally irrelevant to any game, but they're keenly collected by painters & collectors.

Then look at a Whitworth, or a Vindicator - even though I love the old Badger of Tikonov, it's nothing to compete detail-wise with a fantasy, or even a W40K, figure. Yes, the Jade Hawk & some of the new designs are flashier, but they're less detail-rich - no textures, no fabrics, no flesh tones, none of the usual things the painters can go to town on.

(Which makes the appearance of BT minis in the winners of con painting contests each year an amazing testament to the skills of the painters who still love their mechs!

All IMHO, of course.

W.

I love Sophie!

Yeah...do to some issues, I missed buying this years Sophie from their webstore during ReaperCon.
Do they also sell her during GenCon?

Not normally, but they may bring her back for one of their "12 Days of Reaper" events around the Christmas sales season.

On Topic:
A jumping Kanga would be cool. Among my list of "to do" projects is to assemble and paint one of the Rifleman jumpers as a walker, and use the jump plumes to make a jumping tank.

Hmm... maybe it's time  >:D

I am excited to see any and all con exclusives they come up with... jumping, crawling, leaking fluid, exploding, hovercraft ramming into a mech leg, open canopy with a mechwarrior waving lol....  :) O0  I think it's fun to pick up something outside of the norm to satisfy my metal crack addiction.

From some off the work I have seen from members of this forum, almost anything can be customized to what you want.  I am working on my first reposing and its a lot of fun, so even if you are total amateur like me I say buy one and try changing it a bit yourself if you don't like something, really exciting... Trailing off, can't wait to see the con mini's!

This makes a lot of sense and you're probably spot on.  It's a very good argument for why the con exclusives don't need to be table top friendly.  They're meant for display, not play. However, that's also a really good argument for why they shouldn't do another jumping mech.  Does IWM want to be known for it's technical proficiency, or does it want to be known for just doing good jumping robots?

How about something like a battle damaged mech?  Like an atlas that's been beat to hell but still kicking.  Think about all the details they could put into something like that.  Bullet holes, laser burns, melted and fractured armor, exposed internals...    To go with it, create a hex base of a downed mech for it to stand on.  As an added bonus, fully sculpt the base(meaning no cut out slots or attachment holes) so they can sell it as a separate piece.  Could be used as base for other minis or as some kind of objective marker.

...okay, I still want a Kraken 3 more than this, but it's a DAMNED close race. O0

They make the jumping 'mechs because they sell....WHY do they sell? Is it because they are jumping? Is it because they
are different? I got the jumping Rifleman for my groups fabricator to mod up a rocky scenic base, since I thought the pose
could also be made to look like it is jumping down rocks, etc...I think the DFA Jade Hawk and the jumping thunderbolt are
good miniatures because, since they are not on a base of any form, they are easier to mod the legs with. I like the Hatchetman
because it, actually, is table friendly in size.

But, are those the reasons other people get them? Or are there other reasons? I think I would like to join the people saying
"Hey! If these are to showcase technical capabilities, why not do a battledamaged 'mech?"

I wouldn't want an entire chassis made a convention exclusive.  (Can't get a Calliope unless you go to a convention, for example).
A Charger -SB, Yen Lo Wang, or some other unusual/unique variant would be good.  Cyclops CP-11-B? :)

How about a Cyclops CP-10-HQ?!

Of the jumpers released so far, my favorite has to be the Hatchetman. The tall, thin jump plumes don't always look quite right to me, but the Hatchetman just has attitude, enhanced by the jumping pose.

Of course, I'm still waiting for my jumping Highlander. Maybe it'll be this year.  8)

I LOVE the jumping hatchetman!!!

Hmmm. We have a new Atlas on the cover for the upcoming Intro Box.  I'm going to place my bet on that being a new sculpt for the Atlas.  I'll be in it for three if it is.

No, we already have to many Atlas sculpts as is. Maybe the football playing version may be good, but not another standard Atlas.

Well, to be fair, part of it also is that I have a standing one already in bright green and gold (NOTE: This one has sneaked into Ben Rome's blog a few times), and a jumping one that God & Davion painted for me recently that is FAR better than anything I'll ever paint. So... low priority ;)
