Do assisting Tech Teams (page 171) have to be at full strength (1 tech + 6 astechs) to provide the modifier?

If not, I would be right in saying that a single tech (equivalent to 6 casualties so +4 modifier) assisted by three other full techs (so three understrength Tech Teams in effect- giving the full -3 modifier) would have a total modifier to repair etc rolls of +1.

Or would it be better rules-wise to use the assisting techs as astechs to just reduce the Casualty modifier to +2?

This stems from the traditional mech cubicle with accommodations for one pilot and one tech so a Leopard dropship has four techs for the lance and not much room for astechs.

Assisting teams must be at full strength to provide the modifier, so yes, it would be better to fill out your main team.

Pretty much how we've been playing it of late as it turns out.
