Actually that was the sort of thing that got the original directors fired. Apparently they deviated heavily from the script and basically assembled a comedy from it. Which Disney missed because the individual scenes worked for the lighter tone but serious story they wanted, but combined shifted the story heavily into a more absurd genre.
The new director and the coming reshoots are a case of putting someone who can do the tone of story Disney wanted, and trying to salvage a decent film from it.

Is Ron Howard still have the ability to tell a good story?  I'm unclear why the directors for the Adventures of Young Han Solo left the job, for good or ill.

looks like that was what the change in directors was intended to avoid:

Yeash.  Such great news going on about major franchises i adore that are scifi.

I hope Blade Runner 2049 works out better.

I find the news about the Han Solo movie encouraging.

It means that there's a dedicated editorial vision, a conscious decision about what Star Wars is and is not, and that someone is actually thinking about these things instead of just holding out both hands for as much licensing cash as can be poured into them.

Compare that to the old EU, where any old junk would get accepted and published - Han Solo marries Leia via Stockholm syndrome? Luke loses his Force power and joins a cult? Mandolorians are, like, totally way better than those poopyhead Jedi? Palpatine was really trying to protect the galaxy from even more evil aliens that were immune to the Force? - it's a great thing.

That's what all these reshoots actually mean - the semi-finished product breaks with the vision in some way, and so it has to be corrected.

I personally would have liked a silly comedy-style movie in the universe as well, especially considering that the Han/Chewie pairing already generated a lot more of the actual good comedy moments of the original trilogy, but I'm not the person with the vision. Considering some of the stuff that's been kept in Rebels, I'd reckon that a fair few of those scenes WILL make it into the final product, but it'll be tied together differently.

This, a million times over.

If there's one thing that Disney has done fantastically, and that the old EU was god-awful at, it's consistency. They have a vision fro what the Star Wars universe is, its tone, its direction and it's heading. And that's something that the old EU never, ever had

About the only thing that Disney is doing now that has me scratching my head is Forces of Destiny. I watched the first three and gave up.

It could be worse I guess, they could have continued on with Detours. When they shitcanned that unmitigated disaster I knew then that Star Wars was in good hands.

Two First Order vehicles revealed!

The Mandator IV-class Dreadnought, featuring two enormous orbital autocannons for large-scale bombardments and 24 point-defense anti-aircraft cannons on its dorsal surface. It’s also big — 7,669.72 meters in length, or 25,162.8 feet.

The AT-M6 (All Terrain MegaCaliber Six), named for the laser cannon on its back, dwarfs the Empire’s AT-AT; its simian-like gait stabilizes the cannon.

A mere 24 point defence lasers and all that size for an orbital bombardment platform...odd design choice! But then again this is the Empire.

I'm... less than impressed by that AT-M6, though it might get some Fire Mandrills' pulses racing. I'm gonna let the rest sink in for a moment... thanks Fatguy

Had similar thoughts until I saw the close-up picture of those point defense emplacements. Those scream highly specialized platform to do its job *very* well.

Agreed. This isn't a ship for engaging other ships, it looks like it's built solely for the purpose of smashing ground targets. This would be escorted by Resurgents and other general purpose ships, who would handle hostiles in spaaace.

You say those main guns are actually autocannons? Given the energy-heavy focus on most weapons and defenses in Star Wars, that might make it more effective against planetary shields that are built to stop turbolaser strikes. Use this to smash a Hoth-style shield, and then you can vaporize a rebel base at your leisure instead of needing a ground assault.

Similarly, the AT-M6 looks like a dedicated combat unit to me, instead of a hybrid combat transport like the AT-AT. You'd send these guys in first to kill the defenses, and then a second wave of actual troop transports when it's safer.

Yeah, the dreadnought look to be a "fire support" ship for orbital bombardments. AT-M6 could be said to be made to support that artillery piece above its head.

Laser artillery...

(A direct-fire howitzer I can accept, but indirect laser fire is too much for my suspension of disbelief, even when watching Star Wars. :) )

Remember the blast from a Venator's hangar in Revenge of Sith that just obliterated a CIS ship? Yeah, that's from those bad boys.

Like I said, direct-fire howitzers I can believe. When people say artillery, I start expecting IDF. :)

Laser ortillery then.

Alternatively, on a high-enough gravity world, you'd be able to arrange IDF photon barrages...
