Introducing each Clan circa 3054
« on: 22 February 2018, 15:57:41 »
Hey gang, I am trying to come up with a small blurb on each of the 17 Clans circa 3054 for the proposes of introducing them to a new player. How would you best describe your Clan in a few short words to this newcomer trying to decide which is the best for him or her?

Snow Ravens: Militarily, the naval clan, with a standard protocol of being able to field a navy roughly equal to any two clans.  Politically, they are the most Machiavellian among the clans with regards to bloodhouse politics, this occasionally bleeds into their dealings with other clans.  Resources, middling, with a heavy burden in maintaining their warships, they tend to have less to go around for their ground forces, but this also makes them the preeminent warship manufacturers and maintainers of the clans.

Hey gang, I am trying to come up with a small blurb on each of the 17 Clans circa 3054 for the proposes of introducing them to a new player. How would you best describe your Clan in a few short words to this newcomer trying to decide which is the best for him or her?

Burrock: Involved in shady dealings with the Dark Caste, they combine heavy autocannons, high speed, and electronic warfare to dominate the battlefield against their ancient foe, the Blood Spirits.

Blood Spirits: Isolated and resource poor, the Blood Spirits' tradition of diplomacy and brotherhood has served them poorly in the martial society of the Clans, resulting in frequent raids of opportunity against their limited holdings.  They have gradually transitioned from a philosophy of brotherhood to one focused on revenge.

Cloud Cobras:  Showing their spiritual sides, the Cloud Cobras are the most religious of the Clans, embracing both old faiths and new.  Their touman dominates the skies.

Coyotes: A tribe of technicians and mystics, the Coyotes dominated the Golden Century with cutting edge technologies and rituals that, they claimed, provided prophetic visions.  Their dominance faded when other Clans Trialed for the technology, and they are looking for a path back to the top.

Goliath Scorpions: Following visions granted after doses of necrosia (giant scorpion venom), the Scorpions chart their own path, often going off on their own in search of relics of pre-Clan times.

Ice Hellions: The Hellions prize speed above all, and are quick to anger, quick to attack, and (unfortunately) quick to fail, since many of their battleplans center on a "leap and then look" mentality.

Fire Mandrills: The Mandrills consider themselves the greatest warriors in the Clans, and seek to prove it in the non-stop internal fighting between rival kindraas (groups of allied blood houses) within the Clan.  While individual warriors may be highly skilled, the internal factionalism makes it hard for the Clan to operate as a whole.

Hell's Horses:  The Horses show unusual reverence for non-BattleMech assets, and feature vehicles and infantry prominently in their Touman.

Steel Vipers:  The Vipers are obsessed with purity, and with following the guidelines laid down by their founder, Sandra Mercer.

Snow Ravens:  Political opportunists, the Ravens spend as much time maneuvering for power and influence in their council chambers as they do on the battlefield.  They dominate the skies with the largest WarShip and OmniFighter fleet in the Clans, but their ground-based Touman is weak compared to other Clans.

Star Adders: Powerful and aggressive, the Star Adders seek to dominate the Kerensky Cluster in the absence of the Invading Clans.

Nova Cats: Even more mystical than the Coyotes, they seek out visions and set policy by what they see, even if it represents a complete reversal of previous policies.  Evidence suggests that the visions may be real, and linked to a genetic trait the Nova Cats are trying to breed more strongly, to grant their pilots precognitive "luck" on the battlefield.

Wolves: The leaders of the Wardens, the Wolves are known as fierce fighters, but fair rulers.  Under Ulric Kerensky, they seek to mitigate the damage done to the Inner Sphere by the Clan Invasion.

Jade Falcons:  The leaders of the Crusaders, the Falcons prize strength and scorn weakness, willing to strike at their own members if they sense an opportunity.

Smoke Jaguars: Bloody minded and brutal, the Smoke Jaguars have developed a reputation for swift and merciless retribution when challenged by lower castes, and lethal responses to enemy attacks.

Diamond Sharks:  Dominated by their Merchant Caste, the Sharks seek commercial opportunities as much as martial honor, if not more.

Ghost Bears: Considering themselves, above all, a family, the Bears fight for each other moreso than for abstract concepts.  This unity gives them superior strength, as does their incorporation of conquered peoples of the Inner Sphere into their family, rendering their Occupation Zone less turbulent than most.

Wow, great stuff so far gang. Please keep the intros coming!

I wouldn't worry about introducing the Burrocks.

I am off in one of my alternate timelines again Deadborder so the Burrocks fate is far from sealed. Although I am sure the Burrocks do not want anyone to worry about them - nothing to see here! ;)

I'd point out that in 3054, the Nova Cats hadn't started anything regarding what would eventually become their Mystic caste, so the line about the breeding program and evidence suggesting that their visions are real should be removed.

Also, I'd mention that the Ghost Bears have a strong tendency to being conservative in their actions, waiting and observing before making deliberate movements.  But when provoked they tend to lash out with massive force.

However, their mystic traditions are already well established by this time, and Nova Cat characters of this era get Extra Edge by default, implying that the “Mystic” trait has already become realized enough to merit in-game modifiers.

In case you are looking for the tactical/strategic "style" of each clan:

1. Blood Spirits - Use a lot of second line and cheaper mechs because they are so resource poor. Their training methods may be the harshest but they have an above average number of "elite" warriors. On the attack they are super strict about zellbrigen, but on defense they give up personal honor for the greater good. Signature mechs: Blood Kite, Kingfisher, Crossbow, Stooping Hawk

2. Burrocks - We know less about them than the rest, but the resources we have suggest they use indirect tactics (and a love of electronic warfare). Typically lights, mediums, and fast heavies. Supposed to be very adaptable and good bandit hunters. Signature mechs (guessing) - Viper, Ice Ferret, etc.

3. Cloud Cobra - Aerospace heavy. They have a small touman and keep a reserve of warriors ready to step into an open mech/fghter at any time. Mechs and elementals are generally used for securing ground after the fighters bomb the enemy into oblivion. No signature mechs that I can think of, but they did have a hand in developing the Kit Fox.

4. Coyote - Very conservative tactics. Strict adherents of dueling rules and a strong dislike of freeborns even though they are Warden. In 3054 they have just undergone a significant restructuring of their forces after many setbacks in the 3040s. Favor Heavy and Assault mechs, and will soon (by 3058) be fielding ATMs for the first time. Signature Mechs: Gargoyle, Timber Wolf, Stormcrow, (soon) Savage Coyote

5. Diamond Sharks - Use their merchant caste and the chatterweb to make sure they have the best intelligence possible. Often have secondary or tertiary objectives set by the Merch caste. Liberal interpretation of dueling rules. Many of their clusters are oversized and they favor "cavalry" and mobile tactics. Signature mechs: Mongrel, Mad Dog (replaced by Ebon Jaguar by 3067), Warhawk

6. Fire Mandrill - Fractured, so each Kindraa will have a tactical specialization (i.e. Payne is very focused on Mechwarriors). If a clan is facing Fire Mandrills, then you can be sure they'll be the best available and will have fought for the right to be in the trial. Signature Mechs: Adder, Summoner, Warhawk

7. Ghost Bear - Conservative and cagey unless provoked. Their family ethos means that sometimes warriors will step out of line in order to save another warrior. Favor heavier mechs with above average firepower and/or speed for their weight. Very strong elemental core, weaker aerospace (by numbers). Signature mechs: Executioner, Mad Dog, Viper, Fire Moth, Kodiak.

8. Goliath Scorpions - tend to be specialists in fighting in abnormal terrain. They have a very regimented cluster organization with each trinary being combined arms. Have a mix of second line mechs in frontline forces. Warriors sometimes take drugs before going into battle. Very focused on skillful dueling. Signature mechs: Fire Scorpion (second line)

9. Hell's Horses - Combined arms is the key. Every cluster has a mix of Mechs, Aero, elementals, standard infantry, and vehicles. Cluster weight varies by specialization but will likely always be outnumbered mech to mech, but make up for it with other forces. No true signature mechs, though they were the original designer of the Stormcrow.

10. Ice Hellion - Fast lights and mediums are the norm. The cluster descriptions in FM:CC suggest there are heavier clusters, but they are not the most prestigious units. Practice a unique interpretation of zell where a light star can engage a heavier unit as a team until it is damaged, then they bid for the right to finish the fight. They will often make rash tactical and strategic decisions and favor striking first over striking intelligently. Signature mechs: Ice Storm, Hellion

11. Jade Falcon - Conservative warriors, will duel whenever viable. Also strongly value discipline and look negatively on freeborns (though attitudes are slowly changing). Favor surprisingly mobile units and tend to favor heavies and lights. Signature mechs: Summoner, Hellbringer, Kit Fox, Night Gyr, Turkina

12. Nova Cats - Their warriors are very good at accurately targeting units at range. Invented the ER Large laser, so many homegrown units favor that weapon. Well balanced forces. Will hold vision quests before major campaigns. Also very good at the hover drop maneuver. Signature mechs: Supernova, Huntsman, Shadow Cat

13. Smoke Jaguar - Frontal assault and sheer ferocity. Favor heavier units in traditional cavalry charges. Will overlook logistics and intelligence in favor of raw aggression. Clusters seem to be a good mix of mechs and elementals. Signature mechs: Dire Wolf, Warhawk, Ebon Jaguar, Stormcrow, Arctic Cheetah

14. Snow Raven - Weakest ground units (by numbers). Extreme bias towards aerospace and black navy forces. Very rarely provides enemies with safcon and will instead defend in the air. On the ground, they have unique R-teams to conduct battlefield salvage operations under fire. Their forces will be a mix of whatever units they have salvaged from others. Signature Mech: none

15. Star Adder - Practical. Pragmatic. Strategic. If a Star Adder unit is engaging in offensive operations, it is only after significant planning and with a clear goal in mind. Will maintain dueling rules except under extreme circumstances. They have a large touman, so many clusters have a specialty (in case you like a particular type of unit). Fewer elementals than most, and in this time period heavy mechs are the most common. Develop heavy lasers around this time period. Signature mechs: Kingfisher, Ebon Jaguar, Blood Asp (soon-ish).

16. Steel Viper - Frontline units favor the Battle Cobra and Crossbow, two mechs that are not optimal. They make up for it in quality of their pilots. Conservative in dueling. Interestingly, they are the only clan to treat one fighter as a point rather than two. Cluster organization is fairly standard. Signature mechs: Crossbow, Battle Cobra, Black Python (second line)

17. Wolf - Most units are equipped with Cavalry-type mechs. Very tactically flexible. Take dueling as a suggestion rather than a rule. Whether you believe in plot armor or not, they are written to be among the most tactically flexible and effective forces in the clans. Signature mechs: Gargoyle, Timber Wolf, Linebacker, Ice Ferret, Pouncer, Adder

Not a bad list.  I'd note that the Coyotes, as inventors of the omnimech, field more omnis than any other clan, even in their second-line units.  I'd also add the Kingfisher and Stooping Hawk to the list of notable Ghost Bear mechs and the Hellbringer to the Hell's Horses.

Okay folks working on Burrock now but I think I have finished Blood Spirit.

BLOOD SPIRIT
Leaders: Khan Karianna Schmitt & saKhan Daryl Keller
Exclusive Bloodnames: 11 – Boques (General), Campbell (General), Schmitt (Mechwarrior), Church (Mechwarrior), Lewis (Mechwarrior), Keller (Mechwarrior), Yanez (Elemental), Pitcher (Elemental), Cluff (Elemental), Johns (Pilot), McFadden (Pilot)
Political Affiliation: Home Crusader
Military Strength: 44 Clusters (11 Galaxies)
Signature ‘Mechs: Blood Kite, Kingfisher, Crossbow, Stooping Hawk
Warships: 6
Homeworlds: 2 – York [capital] (90%), Arcadia (22%)
Summary: Representing the esprit de corps of the original Star League Defense Force (SLDF) this Clan was ill prepared for the new martial society evolving around it. Selflessly spreading brotherhood through diplomacy with their fellow Clans cost them dearly as they were repaid in large part with hostility. Left destitute and isolated the Spirits developed what could arguable be called the best warrior quality of any Clan. With limited resources they are generally poorly equipped but make up for this with unmatched fanaticism in the face of would be attackers. While they keep to themselves and hate the Burrock Clan for their frequent savage raids the Blood Spirits do have friends. Both Fire Mandrill and Snow Raven can count themselves among their allies while Diamond Shark is allowed to do business with the Spirits. Recently drawn by the results of the invasion the Clan has begun to reach out cautiously to others but they remain wary of outsiders. Their xenophobia has made their domestic affairs much friendlier than other Clans as barriers between castes are relatively few in comparison.

Wolf-  Seemingly the strategic and tactical leaders of the Clans with the last several Khans setting that precedent.  Tactically the Wolves favor a cavalry combined arms approach using fast mechs with long range weapons in the arms so they can still fight effectively even when carrying Elementals.  Unlike some Clans they will not ram head first into a wall of defenders when they can slip around them to isolate defensive positions, they can hover hammer down the wall with the best of them.  While they are not known for the complete combined arms integration the Horses exhibit, they do incorporate more vehicles in secondline and garrison units and have a few faction specific vehicles.

Mongoose - From all accounts, a band of feckless Rules Lawyers whose attempt to win a dispute through legalistic wrangling and obtuse interpretation of established statutes enraged the Smoke Jaguars to the point where they decided to Absorb, then reave Mongoose genetic legacies.

Widowmaker - A jealous Clan with few moral scruples, their leaders freely lied and manipulated other Clans to diminish and destroy those they viewed as enemies.  Always seeking advantage, they succeeded in having the Wolverines eliminated, but their clash with the Wolves over the booty led to the death of ilKhan Nicholas Kerensky, and the subsequent Absorption by the Wolves.  For all their underhandedness, they did not fear death (utilizing suicide troops against the Wolverines) and fought with skill to the bitter end.

Wolverine - The Not Named Clan, they sought to retain elements of social mobility and cultural development, in violation of Nicholas Kerensky's edicts.  Censured for this behavior, they were beset by other Clans jealous of their technological and military prowess.  A Trial of Grievance escalated into a Trial of Annihilation punctuated by the nuclear destruction of several cities and a massive fleet battle that left most of the Wolverines dead or sterilized and assimilated as slave labor.  Circumstantial evidence suggests that some survived the final battle and circled around the Inner Sphere to the rimward side, beyond the Magistracy of Canopus, establishing bases from which they traded advanced technology to the Canopians in exchange for intelligence about events in the Inner Sphere.

Thanks Colt Ward for your insight into the Wolves which I certainly agree with to a large degree. Think they get away with some of their more 'liberal' tactics because their the Clan of Kerensky.

Lol Mendrugo, I think you nailed the three fallen Clans of the time period quite well. Wasn't planning on detailing them for new players but it is good to have some words of wisdom just in case it comes up.

Think Burrock is all done going onto Cloud Cobra now.

BURROCK
Leaders: Khan Michael Holliday & saKhan Veronica Moreau
Exclusive Bloodnames: 13 – Gastopiv (General), Hutchinson (General) Marghar (General), Polczyk (General), Lamongue (Mechwarrior), Linn (Mechwarrior), Van Houten (Mechwarrior), Holliday (Elemental), McMillan (Elemental), Opriq (Elemental), Columbo (Pilot), Moreau (Pilot), Nga (Pilot)
Political Affiliation: Home Crusader
Military Strength: 32 Clusters (7 Galaxies)
Signature ‘Mechs: Mist Lynx (Koshi), Viper (Dragonfly), Stormcrow (Ryoken), Hellbringer (Loki), Summoner (Thor), Gargoyle (Man O’War), Executioner (Gladiator)
Warships: 15
Homeworlds: 5 – Albion [capital] (100%), Priori (48%), Hoard (35%), Dagda (24%), Paxon (0%)
Summary: Named for an acid secreting invertebrate that can tunnel through solid rock this Clan was founded by twin brothers from the Rim Worlds Republic. Hard fighting during the Pentagon campaign coupled with the Grand Council’s failure to act against what they perceived as unClanlike behavior left them disenchanted with the Clans as a whole and weaker militarily. Growing ever more cynical a group of rebels attempted to breakaway from Kerensky’s society but the Clan with the help of the Cloud Cobras bought them justice. These experiences have left them ever vigilant and perhaps the finest bandit hunters in known space. Superb raiders the Burrocks’ pride themselves on finding and exploiting an opponent’s weak points for maximum effect. Their constant complaints before the Grand Council and merciless attacks against those they see dishonorable have made them quite a few bitter enemies. Notably these include Blood Spirit and Fire Mandrill who are considered their most hated foes but also includes Smoke Jaguar and Goliath Scorpion with whom they have frequently sparred. The Clan has also forged alliances with Cloud Cobra and Star Adder which have continued to prove beneficial to them today. The leadership of the Clan has recently changed and the Burrocks now hope to take part in a renewed invasion of the InnerSphere after the grand failure of Tukayyid.

Thank you sir, and now on to my next one.

CLOUD COBRA
Leaders: Khan Din Steiner & saKhan Kieran Telinov
Exclusive Bloodnames: 12 – Beckett (General), Khatib (General), Steiner (General), Morales (Mechwarrior), Riaz (Mechwarrior), Telinov (Mechwarrior), Mannix (Elemental), Quong (Elemental), Eaker (Pilot), Hobbes (Pilot), Kardaan (Pilot), Spaatz (Pilot)
Political Affiliation: Home Warden
Military Strength: 37 Clusters (7 Galaxies)
Signature ‘Mechs: Kit Fox (Uller), Adder (Puma), Viper (Dragonfly), Mad Dog (Vulture), Summoner (Thor), Gargoyle (Man O’War)
Warships: 15
Homeworlds: 3+ – Homer [capital] (80%), Brim (30%), Babylon (26%)
Summary: Christened in honor of one of the deadliest snakes known to mankind which was genetically adapted to help control native wildlife on Arcadia. The original disparate force assembled by a SLDF Chaplain and a Vice Admiral was quickly molded into a united Clan built around religious precepts and aerospace superiority. While Operation Klondike took its toll these core principles have never wavered establishing a Clan that despite its deceptively small size has always been a very potent foe. One only has to look at its blood feud with Coyote which could be argued to have contributed to that once powerful Clan’s precipitous decline. They are also close allies with Burrock and Star Adder as well as maintaining friendly relations with Diamond Shark, Nova Cat and Snow Raven. Possessing a superb scientist caste which specializes in genetic engineering, aerospace design, and light OmniMech development. Recently the Cobras have activated large amounts of their reserves to augment their strength following the Truce of Tukayyid. They seem ideally suited to strike as rumors of a new operation in the InnerSphere continued spread as the Invaders return home to contemplate their next move.
