Infantry and their basing question
« on: 25 June 2017, 06:29:13 »
Once upon a time, for Battletech miniatures, the only bases were hex bases.  Now it seems that is unecessary for vehicles (which look better without them, IMO).  Out of curiousity, what's a good standard for infantry and/or battlesuits?  30mm washers with a full platoon/point or something else?  I've got a bunch of infantry and battlesuits and I'm curious as to how best to base them.

Some place or fit the required # to bases. Others use pennies for mounting a single BA to represent a point/squad. Others just do what looks nice.
Personally I do the 1 BA per penny and use MWDA infantry stands mounted on small/normal hex bases as required.

The two most common methods I've seen for representing a unit are a single trooper on a penny and 1 squad/point (smallest organizational unit for your faction) on a hexbase. Most I.S. infantry platoons are split into 7-man squads, so 7 troopers on a base. Some periphery states go up to 10 troopers per squad. BA would be from 4 to 6 troopers per base. I have always based mine on hexbases (vehicles too) in order to keep my units looking uniform.

There are no actual requirements, as long as your opponent is informed as to what the unit represents. Do what works best for you.

I personally use hex bases with 1-4 Battlearmour or 5-9 foot infantry.  Largely because they look good to my eye like that.

I've taken to using MW:DA infantry & BA units, popped from their dials, as platoon markers. There's 3-5 infantry, or 1-3 BA, on the "kidney bean" base, which takes up half a hex - which I find convenient, as it makes it easy to have two infantry per hex. It's got to the point that if I'm mounting IWM metal BA, I'll cut a plastic hex in half to mount them on.

Variations? Some MW:DA BA are bigger, like the Salamander, and I'll fit two on a full hex base. And I'll put de-based field artillery, or mortars, on a full hex with a little terrain, and some additional figures. I'll also mount a single figure on a small coin to represent squads.

I tend to assume any mini you work with is debased, by definition. :)
