Inspired by all the primitive mechs people have been throwing out, here's a couple of ideas for the periphery:

First it seems appropriate for the Marians to get in on the mech building game in the same way as technology starts to disseminate. My Centurion -MH is the obvious alternative to canon -H, although I guess you could have put the spare ton into something other than extra armour:

Note: This sheet was produced by copying from two different designs in SSW and editing the BV and Points values, the CBills figure hasn't been corrected yet.

I'm not 100% certain of the legality of this mech. I'm pretty sure that there's nothing stopping you from taking a primitive mech a refitting it to use standard armour, but the primitive construction rules don't include the option. Since industrial mechs can have equivalent armour to standard I don't think there should be a problem with primitives doing the same, but I may have missed a rule that forbids it.

Edit: After all the faffing about I did with the Toro design sheet it's the preface to it that I missed a typo in. Balls.

I don't know if this is legal since it uses a shoulder turret, but here's a Centurion produced by the FWL in an effort to provide more self-covering fire for their fire support lances (The TRO 3025 mentions somewhere that Centurions, Archers, and Trebs were supposedly commonly used together by the FWL for their homogeneity).

Unfortunately, Great and minor Houses aren't the only entities innovating in this technologically backwards time.  Evil geniuses are afoot, as well.

Somehow, a pirate gang operating around the Periphery of the Capellan Confederation, Federated Suns, and Taurian Concordat captured one of the hapless Liao Chargers (the CGR-1L) and converted it into a terror machine.

The head of this pirate enclave, who calls himself The Judge, has modified this Charger to be an absolute threat to civilian populations, and uses the Mech and its variety of killing weapons - including an ER flamer and light machine gun - to cow unwitting, defenseless populations into giving tribute from time to time.  The Charger reportedly still maintains its large laser, however, so it is not entirely defenseless even against hard targets, despite its use of commercial armor.

The Judge himself has proven to be wily and difficult to pin down, and it's speculated that he even has access to a JumpShip.  This would be an incredible story, as the technical prowess to keep any ship operational, let alone a pirate-owned and operated Jumpship, is difficult if not impossible to come by in this day and age.

The Quickdraw doesn't get a lot of upgrade in capability, but the missiles make a lot more sense, at least.  Some Mechwarriors turn the rear-facing medium lasers to fire forward thanks to the coolant pod also added into the Mech's center torso.

For fun, something of a failed testbed. Perfectly functional, but ultimately rejected for production due to its virtual immobility.

(intentionally inefficient for that new prototype feel. You could trade the modular armor for another seven tons of hardened armor and have virtually the same protection but better mobility. But if I did that I'd feel like I was missing the point, or feel obligated to remove a PPC to put the modular armor back on.  ;D)

The Hunchback is a Mech with a plethora of variants.  It needs a couple more! 

I give you...the Scatback!

Made for better speed with which to bring its autocannon into play sooner, the Scatback is a Hunchback with a supercharger.  Two versions of this speedier machine were created:  the 4S, with a hypervelocity AC/10 - which means it doesn't really NEED to use the supercharger to hurt somebody.

One intrepid Guillotine pilot took the redesign of his Mech to extremes, tearing out most of the Mech's heat sinks to replace both RA medium lasers with large lasers, and strapped coolant pods all over the Mech.  He could never cash in on the idea, however, since no Great House military wanted to take a risk on a close-range brawler with so many explosive attachments.  Still, the triple large lasers performed well in testing and proved to be reliable.

Combine engineers never really stopped tinkering with their version of the Archer.  By removing the homing components from the Archer-2R's LRM launchers, they freed up enough weight for the ARC-2KD to keep the rear-firing medium lasers in the center torso.  Coolant pods addressed the overheating concerns brought about by the large lasers in the arms.  The only thing keeping this design from being more widespread in the Combine is the shorter range and inherent inaccuracy of its missiles.  It is still a fairly powerful combatant even with the missile issues - at least until the coolant runs out.

The ARC-2KM came about when further testing indicated that a less sharp heat curve should make for a more effective combatant.  By using a smaller MRM, they were able to add several heat sinks to go along with the coolant pods already installed.  Unfortunately, this also required a reduction in the Mech's armor, similar to that of the ARC-2W seen in Wolf's Dragoons.  Still, the Combine is generally pleased with this modification.  The bottleneck to its production is finding a viable factory to produce it.

The Catapult-C4, being a pure fire support Mech, got commercial armor and used the weight savings to install three coolant pods.  This gives the Mech cooling bursts for a full third of its onboard ammo, allowing it to maintain a higher rate of fire even while on the move.  Some of its pilots, however, wish one or two of those pods was removed for extra ammunition.

The Porcupine is a recently introduced Mech.  This Mech was conceived as a close-assault unit, modified heavily from the base Vulcan chassis.  However, the armor spikes which give it its namesake coupled with a supercharger make it a dangerous Mech anywhere.  It also carries a number of lasers and improved SRM one-shot packs for extra oomph after it knocks down a target.  An ER flamer rounds out its weapon package.

Another version which addresses the lack of range of the base model is the 1E, which removes the jump jets and most of the one-shot packs for a large laser.
