For me, I've got a fondness for rocking an avatar whenever I can. If I can't, then next choice is the old warrior vtol. AC/2, LB/2, HV/2 whatever, nothing like flying around waaaaaaaaay out of range plinking away like a madwoman.
Missiles, how do they work? (Seriously, guided bottle rockets?)

Just wondering if anyone admits to having a "quirk" when playing battletech.
     My main quirk when playing Battletech would probably be using a very limited number of different chassis.  I prefer to use variants to round out my forces.  For example: A 3SW medium lance.  Instead of using some combination of the classic 55-ton Trio and other introtech medium mechs, my lance would be made up of SHD-2Hs or -2Ks for general purpose troopers, while SHD's that trade the AC5 for an LRM15 provide fire support.  Not the most visually distinctive and appealing force, but your quartermaster will love you.

Also, Full-Head Ejection System goes on every custom design of mine, unless it uses a torso-mounted cockpit.

Not me, but another member of my group is no longer allowed to kick any prone targets with a Vindicator.

Don't know how, but the target Stackpoles every time.
What's disturbing is that it's happened with at least one ICE powered vehicle...

I am almost afraid to ask (though I am getting some idea from context) what do you mean by "Stackpoles"?  I know the author but not using his name as a verb.

The victim of the kick has a massive fusion engine (or ammo) explosion that takes everything near by with it.

God yes this.  To the point when I get bored I start randomly picking through RATs and roll up companies and battalions of units I'm never going to use, just to see what happens.  Hell, even when trying to make a whole new force I can't just cherrypick things, I need structure and restrictions.

My first one would be the use of 80 ton mechs.  Zeus, Gargoyle, Thug, Salamander, etc.

Choosing to field a Thug over the other options isn't a 'quirk'; it's good taste.

two quirks.

1.)  Despite it being an objectively good 'mech, every Thunderbolt I drive suffers an ammo explosion.

2.)  Even when enemy artillery scatters, it winds up hitting my units.

If I have a single example of a mech that I'm particularly attached to, or if the pilot has a particularly detailed backstory, it will get shot in the face.
Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

It's a reference to the author's frequent use of fusion reactor explosions in some of his earlier novels.  Basically, any time the fusion reactor takes more than a certain number of hit in the same turn (which can frequently happen when the CT of a 'Mech is destroyed), there's a small chance of the reactor going critical and exploding.  The results are pretty devastating to units in the surrounding hexes, and serious enough even two hexes away.  Beyond that range, it's mostly just extra heat.  If you've got the misfortune of landing in the center of the blast, it's pretty much a "goodbye 'Mech" moment.

Here's an odd quirk of mine:

Mad Cats.

If my enemy brings a Mad Cat, I'm going to do poorly. If I or one of my allies brings a Mad Cat, I'm going to do even worse. :(

Just the original 75-tonner, mind you. No notable issues with the rest of the family as of yet.

I don't know why but something about the Banshee -3E that just tickles me in all the right places.  I know it's a turd but I can't help but have a special place in my heart for the 95 ton road apple.

If it can do the most damage by attacking from a range greater than 1, it's not a real Banshee. :)

Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

Just wondering if anyone admits to having a "quirk" when playing BattleTech.

I've stuck with my custom BattleMaster with only minor upgrades for nearly a decade now. I've got virtually no interest in ever switching to anything else. A new TRO is just a selection of new adversaries to pit myself against as far as I'm concerned.

(In case anybody's wondering: Enhanced ER PPC, 2 Standard Large Lasers, 2 Standard Medium Lasers, 2 Clantech Medium Pulse Lasers, Machine Gun Array with 2 Standard MGs and 1 ton ammo, Streak SRM-6 with 2 tons ammo, CASE II, XL Engine, XL Gyro, Endo-Composite Internal Structure, 18 Clantech Double Heat Sinks, 16 tons Standard Armor and Command Console.)
Ever felt that The Powers That Were at FASA, WizKids and FanPro never gave Victor Steiner-Davion and the Federated Commonwealth a fair shake in the canon timeline? Then you might be interested in my Victor Victorious AU at

 [stupid]

Most of my games have been played with introductory tech.  My quirk is some of my oddball tastes in 'mechs.  I like playing less popular 'mechs like the Assassin, Cicada, Quickdraw, Cyclops, Banshee (not the 3S).  Alpha Strike made it much more rewarding to play these guys.

It kind of explains my unhealthy addiction to clan 'mechs like the Fire Moth.

I really, really, really like having all the 'Mechs in a lance move at the same speed.  It makes sense organizationally within the context of a battalion or regiment, but in a lance-on-lance it could actually be detrimental. . . but there it is.

Whenever I play against Natasha Kerensky (opfor) her Dire Wolf can survive anything.  10 Arrow IV artillery rounds (yes 200 points of damage in one round) plus additional damage from ground combatants.  She remained standing and was delivering some serious damage to us.
