Republic Knights and Loyalty
« on: 23 September 2017, 18:37:30 »
how likely would it be for a Republic Knight, perhaps one of the minor Knights Errant, to go against the republic, joining one of the pirate factions and/or one of the Republic's enemies, like the CapCon?

Not all knights are loyal.
Self interest and loyalty to their families original faction will play a part.
In the dark age novels a number of knights defected.
I wish I could get a good grip on reality, then I would choke it.
Growing old is inevitable,
Growing up is optional.
Watching TrueToaster create evil genius, priceless...everything else is just sub-par.

Hell, a Paladin defected...

The fiction gives us loads of rogue knights: a couple went over to the Senate rebellion, as I said Thad Marik carved out his own FWL loyal empire, the INN fiction had a couple defect.
Also, there were knights who didn’t heed the recall to prefecture X. I presume some of them eventually joined rival militaries to survive

so having one joining the CapCon would fit?
i put a skill 2 pilot in my 2nd Tikonov guards force to use up the last 10pv.. currently he's labelled as "former republic soldier", but elite skills call for a somewhat better background.

He could just be a former RAF regular. Say from the Sentinels or something?
Especially if he's from Tikonov - a RAF soldier who is sick of seeing his Capellan heritage run roughshod over by the Republic.
Finally, he takes his Mech over to the rebels.

If he's a defecting Knight, I'd expect him to be in a command position so Liao can show him off as a poster boy for why you should defect.

"Look, your cause is lost! Surrender to the glorious Confederation and like your comrade Sir Rhys Muldoon you can command a company in our glorious army of liberation!"

at the moment i have listed as 2nd in command... but i'm sure i can promote him. :)
i'll just move the current CO down to XO.

he's in a MAD-5L so probably not his original mech. but could easily be an upgrade he got after defecting, or a replacement for a combat loss.

No, no! I like that. Maybe they don’t exactly trust him and he’s got a CO who keeps an eye on him.

Have you got a TO&E?

not yet.. just a Alpha Strike force listing, and an few names from an older version of the army (before deciding it should be the 2nd Tikonov guards)

some of these names may probably change soon.. these were "general capellan names" made by putting chinese and russian as the settings for a random name generator, and picking the ones that sounded cool.
with the change of the nature of the unit, i need to generate a bunch more names with some more variety. especially for the regular pilots, which i've diced should mostly come from Poznan (because Polish+Spanish+portugese+[various asian] ought to generate some really interesting names)

Notable Persona's:
Sao-shao Qiang Bogdanov[/b] - Male, Middle Aged. Battalion Commander. Connected to the Morgaine family on Betelgeuse by way of marriage. Pilots a CP-11-A-DC Cyclops command mech.
Sang-wei Yaser Ali - Male, Young. Tactical specialist, Operates the command console of the Cyclops.
Sao-shao Leonid Lau - Male, Young. Company Commander. A former Republic soldier, and the leader of the Leśni resistance cell (on Poznan), aggressive personality. Pilots a MAD-5L Marauder.
Si-ben-bing Zhen Kardos - Female, Young. Commander of the Battle Armor detachment.
Sao-wei Motya Sun - Male, Late Middle Aged. Former instructor. Commander of pursuit lance. Pilots a TR1 Wraith
Sao-wei Rhoda Fay - Female, Young. Commands the Scout Lance. Former Hellespont Industrials Test Pilot, has been assigned the Prototype YHC-3E Yinghuochong on loan from that company.

Like it! You did a similar unit for a Hsein campaign, from memory?

This is a reworking, to better fit into the canon setting, and thus feel more like an organic part of the setting.

The Dark Age era is all about the Republic breaking up. A Knight-Errant is the likeliest to defect as they are often (though not exclusively) selected to represent their homeworld. Higher up it is less likely I grant, but there are cases.

so what would be a good visual shorthand for "i am/was a knight"?
i'm not sure the CapCon would tolerate a full custom paintjob the way the republic would, but i would love to have some sort of visual identifier, in the tradition of the 'ace custom' trope.

The Knights’ colour scheme was black and silver from memory? Why not thin, black and silver highlights on the arms and shoulders? Something small but striking.
