Quirks:

Non-Standard Parts

Easy to Pilot
Searchlight

Cost (Base Chassis): 42,517 (C-Bills or Equivalent)

Overview:

The Zapadka Modular Light Utility Vehicle is one of the more practically important combat support vehicles in the SLDF. It isn't nearly as common as the much larger Destrier, but if your trade isn't in Combat Support, the Zapadka is the truck you see most often and at closest range every day. It's the vehicle your squad leader or platoon 2IC likely tell you to draw from the motor pool and for tens of thousands of SLDF soldiers every year, it's their first car.

Description:

The Zapadka is laid out conventionally; engine compartment front, crew compartment behind that, with turret (w. searchlight) above and the Omnipod to the rear. It is a two-axel all-wheel drive vehicle, with dual bogies on the rear axel. ground clearance is 0.53 meters.

Development:

When the New Model Army program began, it started with a massive dump of equipment donated to the SLDF, but unwanted. Much of this was fit for targetry or training only; what remained was a hodgepodge mixture of equipment from all over known space. Nowhere did this create a more gregious issue than in the Combat Service Support Corps of the nascent New Model Army.

One of the first industrial programs began was Project: Hannibal, which was aimed at supplying the New Model Army with a family of vehicles to meet all it's CSS needs with as few vehicles as possible.

Originally three basic platforms were envisioned; all omnivehicles and all built to non-combat standards. All were to be fusion-engined in line with then-Commander McKenn's directive to eliminate hydrocarbon fuel from the supply system.

Simply named Types 1, 2 and 3, the project was considered a failure; only the Type 1 partly met the requirements laid out and this became the Zapadka. The Type 2, eventually saw the light of day by way of the modified and demilitarized Clydesdale heavy truck, which was later developed into the Destrier, today the backbone of SLDF CSS forces. the Type 3; which was the super-heavy truck, was a complete failure and this role has only recently been filled by the new Moose Prime Movers, which are only now becoming available, very nearly 40 years after the first requirement was laid down.

Deployment:

While ubiquitous, the Zapadka is held in only small numbers at most levels of the SLDF, but only found in large numbers on fixed installations and there are several configurations never seen off the hard pack. Most SLDF soldiers not actually familiar with the 'Zap as a part of their trade are not aware it is a modular vehicle. The Zapadka is hardly every reconfigured through it's entire career and most will be cannibalized for parts to keep others running without every having utilized their modular facilities. Those that do are lovingly stamped by the techs with the number of times and into which format they have been reconfigured.

The Zapadka is delivered from the factory unconfigured and only configured at depot level before delivery from a delivery unit to the unit it will be used with. A Zapadka might be reconfigured if returned for depot-level maintainance; you don't necessarily or even often get back the same serial number vehicle you put up for repair; the repair unit, the depot and the delivery unit fill vacancies by the priority-level of the units they serve.

A non-omni version of the Zapadka is exported by the 3rd League.

Capabilities:

The Zapadka is a rugged and reliable vehicle, which handles well off-road. It is a flexible vehicle in theory, but in practice it performs more in line with a vehicle half it's weight. It's operators like it, however as it is easy to handle on and off-road.

Limitations:

The Zapadka is extremely useful in that it can be reconfigured, but expensive for whatever role it is filling. While Capable for what it provides, what it provides isn't as much as many comparable designs. With only 3.675 tons of podspace for an 11 ton vehicle, the 'Zap has many critics in the exchequer. In the cargo role, 3.675 tons makes for a hell of a step up to the Destrier's approximately 20 tons.

Notes:

Again, I'm adding turrets as omnicomponents and the Zap even swaps out the turret at one point. So it's not wholly legal in that way.

I named the Zapadka after a friend I work with. She was having a bad day and I was like; "Here, look, I made you a truck and named it after you." That perked her up.

I really like the idea of this truck.  I've developed a number of non-Omni versions of this kind of GP truck.

But...

It seems like a bad idea for the ambulance version to still have the turreted MG, making it look like a combat vehicle.

Taken a step further, the MG actually seems kind of useless on a number of these designs.  "Hey, sarge, our cement mixer is armed, so can we use that in maneuvers?"  Maybe strip out the MG and add it back as omni-gear only on certain designs?  It would up your omni-pod space to 4.5t, which significantly broadens the possibilities.

You're missing operators for some of your gear too.  Mostly in the comm truck variant, which needs a crew member to use each ton of comm gear.  But also the ambulance variant, which has five sets of paramedic gear, but only two extra passengers.

I too see the mistake... why not make the NON-Combat supports keep the turret and have two Searchlights to reflect Construction. The Fire Truck and MP Tactical should move another Sprayer into the turret along side a single searchlight.

That's a good idea.  Keep the turret as a structural item, with a given capacity.  Some designs put MGs into it, some put sprayers, some put searchlights.  Some might even put in a lift hoist, fluffing the mass difference somehow.

The first version I did had it as non-fixed, but I ended-up adding it to every configuration. The why is a BG/Fluff thing. The 'Zap is a light truck that really shows it's roots in the people who were sitting in on the design. Even if this wasn't BT were everything has guns, these are people who came up fighting dirty little wars. They look at the Ares conventions as "Quaint". Everything stays armed because they are used to living in a world without front lines; little teams of guerillas with SRMs and satchel charges can show up anywhere, anytime and the MG is a good compromise in terms of weight and usefulness.

Besides, I do a lot of min-maxing my designs and I wanted something you could trip over every day and see it isn't perfect, but it mostly works. That said; the 'Zap is a hardly little truck, but it's own worst enemy too; there was a time when the SLDF didn't have to base it's whole support system on a backbone of a vast series of modified, combat-vehicle-standard 50-ton trucks. That was before the Zapadka was accepted for service.

Weird thing about BT though is that literally everything has armour as well, which is wild when you consider the oddity/absurdity/obscenity (depending on how much math you like to do) that such vehicles are in the real world. What *I* should be doing is dropping all 1.5 tons of sub-standard armour and making that podspace. But que serah.

No one is going to be dumb enough to even think the "Tactical" truck is a combat vehicle. It's for MPs doing cop-things; raiding unlicensed brothels, busting up drug operations and black racketeering, ect. For convoy escort and base defence; they have real combat vehicles; wheeled tanks and APCs, mainly.

You're missing operators for some of your gear too.  Mostly in the comm truck variant, which needs a crew member to use each ton of comm gear.  But also the ambulance variant, which has five sets of paramedic gear, but only two extra passengers.

I'll be honest; I think the SupVee rules are silly and pedantic how they demand additional crew for everything and I'm a lot more cutt-throat on my customs, otherwise you end up with the Comet; whats supposed to be a conventional fighter...with a five-man crew? Just for the weapons? Likewise; when I post my VTOLs, a lot of them have "Extra" crew for the door/waist guns, plus the pilot/co-pilot. When I do big ships; I just look a historical facsimile, cut the crew down for being high-tech and roll with that.

I see the comm truck as being used while static; there are no facilities for crew; more like a box full of radios with a couple rolly-chairs. Mainly, the two guys who drove the truck there run the radios. Otherwise, it's part of an echelon setup and the Comm Techs are riding in something else.

The Amb has to have two paramedics in it while in motion; they'll need full 5-point restraint harnesses, a padded roll cage, ect and some basic crew comforts. I put in 5x Paramedic equipment to account for having lots of supplies and equipment. For 2 guys though; 8 stretcher cases is plenty to handle. And I think from my days on an amb crew that 8 stretcher cases is going to take up almost as much physical space in a lot of ways (but not cubed) as a 28-man BT platoon, as well; so starting from a cube of 3.675 ton cube, that I filled with other nonsense fit as well.

I wasn't too concerned with "Handheld" searchlights for any of my early designs, because I was still trying to pretend the space restrictions on SupVees made a lick of sense. i still like to pretent everything at least comes with headlights, unless I'm being really pedantic, like i was with the MW vehicles I converted, because i wanted them to be a broadly usable as possible.

Many vehicles do have armor in the real world, though.  It just depends on the BAR rating.  I could easily imagine a truck like this having a BAR 3 or so in the real world.  Nothing that'll really stop anything, but maybe shrug off some basic small arms and maybe distant artillery explosions.

Also, since your highest armor on any facing is 6 points, you could easily drop the mass of the armor by dropping it to BAR 6.  Anything over 6 is going to penetrate anyway, regardless of the BAR.  Or, really, you could drop it to BAR 5, since sides and rear have 5 points of armor.

If this is for a "dirty little wars" kind of environment, it would likely appear escorting small convoys, or for small outpost defense.

I agree, for some vehicles, the crew rules can get pretty insane.  And I see what you're going for, between "static use" and "mobile use," in the comm truck and ambulance.

Wow.

That I hadn't considered.

Amazing how often I miss out on basic math! That's a good idea.

If this is for a "dirty little wars" kind of environment, it would likely appear escorting small convoys, or for small outpost defense.

Well, the New Model Army-SLDF, by way of SOG, comes from that environment, but the warfare of the Der Tag AU spans the whole spectrum from very limited conflicts of outlaw paramilitaries vying for power and full-Zell Clan warfare to nukes and ortillery total warfare, approaching the clauswitzian concept of ideal war in some ways.

Part of this heritage of the SLDF is that the MPs play a major role in the organization; one difference from some nation's MPs today is that SLDF Military Police are a lot more Military than Police; the Zapadka Tactical truck is one of the more common instances of the police side of things; but a big deal in the SLDF is handling prisoners and dealing with the local criminal element and the supply lines and aysmetrical actions of terrorist/guerilla groups within areas they control.

So while the MPs can resemble a gendermerie or even like a Keovoets or BSAP-kind of unit (Armoured/Mechanized infantry), when the Tactical truck is in play, things are more like what you would have seen us Malaya or Northern Ireland.

Convoy escort for MPs looks like Tokugawas, Demons and Chevaliers; turreted wheeled tanks are preferred. Logistics units are tasked with their own convot escort officially, but it's an MP secondary mission as well to supplement when available. Base defence or base recovery-after-attack is similar, but with the MP platoons doing a lot of fighting from prepared positions with the rest of the garrison. Assault guns and APCs are preferred vehicle support. The SLDF has some lovely APCs.

The tactical truck is totally unsuited for that role. The MPs would just attach a mobile unit from one of their Flying Columns.

Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

The approach I took when working up vehicles for my non-canon unit was to use fractional accounting with a combat vehicle.  At 5 tons (wheeled) and a fusion engine, you have 9/14 speed and 3.5 tons for "pod space".  The "APC" model goes with 2.5 tons of armor (10 points on each side) and 1 ton of infantry.  The 25 rating fusion engine can also drive 9 ton, 15 ton, and 45 ton wheeled vehicles at slower speeds.

For comparison, the modern MATV weighs in at 15 tons (adding 500 kilos to the base weight for the driver, gunner and 3 passengers), and apparently goes ~5/8 (6/9 on roads).  With its relatively small cargo capacity (2 tons), that leaves quite a bit for armor (which makes sense given the protection requirements against IEDs; it works out to 24 points per side):
1.5 IS
1.0 Control (rounded; would be 0.75 with fractional accounting)
4.0 ICE engine (70, for 6/9 off road)
2.0 Cargo
0.5 Passengers
6.0 Armor (1.5 tons per side)

I did a frankly shameful amount of that too and i did it (most shamefully) based on which system was fastest and easiest to use.

As such, I have a whole other and more important class of truck which is built as a combat Vee...Along with about 70% of the trailers I designed, though that doesn't matter much, aside to the C-Bill bottom line.
