New terrain option
« on: 18 July 2017, 08:30:17 »
While at Origins I found a booth that may interest a lot of us. www.aplace2play.toys (a website) has these neat laser cut hexagonal terrain packs that may work for BattleTech. I mean I know they'll work for Alpha Strike, but the fact that they're hexes also means they'd work for traditional BT. I'm not going to link to them directly because that'd be crappy to do on CGL's official site, but you can google them or use the address in the first sentence.

They remind me of the Terratiles that I have. Just smaller.

Okay, that would be cool...if they showed you what tiles were in each set.

Yeah. Maybe send them a note?

I started using Terra Tiles for CBT with simplified miniature rules. We've been happy with the change.

Is it just my suspicious mind, or do they look like they'll connect with HeroScape terrain? But interesting, and potentially affordable. Look like thick cardstock, or think styrene sheet.

Yeah . . . looks like it might be a solution for roads, but the hexes I build are off from CBT standard so I will have to check measurements.

Looks good, was excited...and then saw the size :(

http://www.aplace2play.toys/p-10-land-roads-meadows.aspx
Hex size = 2.5"

http://www.aplace2play.toys/p-11-land-streams.aspx
Hex size = 2.5"

So, it appears all the hexes are 2.5" (does not say Flat-Flat, but that is what I would assume)

And heroscape is 1.75" flat to flat.

Okay, it was just a thought.

2.5" hexes are actually pretty good for actually fitting minis in hexes. Wonder if they could be persuaded to do a 2" hex, or 1.5", version?

Those look spectacular.

Thanks for the heads-up,

EDIT:
Just to be clear, this is still a great find.  It's just a great find that ought to be in the Gaming Terrain sub.

And heroscape is 1.75" flat to flat.

The booklet I have says they're 2.25" across (flat to flat). It also says each standard terrain set includes 70 tiles, which will cover around 24" x 14.5" (if you put seven rows of ten hexes).

Is it just my suspicious mind, or do they look like they'll connect with HeroScape terrain? But interesting, and potentially affordable. Look like thick cardstock, or think styrene sheet.

They're thicker cardstock. Not as thick as the old posterboard maps, but not paper either.

Rats!  These would have been really cool to use on top of a felt mat. If you had a big enough play space (larger than a 4' x 6' or a 4' x 8' table) I could see using these for BT though.

Why can't you use them on a felt mat?

If they are that size, flat to flat, then they do not fit on the 1.75 inch flat to flat felt maps.

Yeah i'd have to buy another felt mat specifically keyed to that size.

Anyone done the math on how many sets you'd need for a standard CBT map sheet?

mapsheets are 22" by 18", tiles are 2.25". 22/2.25 = 9.7 repeating; 18/2.25=8. So you'd need (9*8=) 72 tiles. Which is one set.

Except that only accounts for actual area.

You need to look at the rows of hexes. So on a sheet I believe it is 15 hexes wide and 17 hexes long. So one needs 255 hexes minimum to make a map sheet.

So about $40 if you want to recreate one map sheet that would be about 34 by 38 inches.  But if you wanted a 2 map game, we're talking $80.

Now for a 4x4 foot board for Alpha Strike, you'd need 7 sets if my math is right.  That's not too bad considering the cost of the fancy vinyl game mats that seem to be becoming a thing lately.  And this is customizable.  I think i'd probably just go with a green table cloth and then buy a water and road set or two.

EDIT: A GREEN table cloth.  A "great" table cloth would be nice, but it would need to be green.  Or grey for urban battles I guess.

Yeah, the roads & rivers where what was interesting to me but they are too large.

I like having the 3D trees and buildings now.

I gather these wouldn't be thick enough to stack for hills either, if they are just cardstock.

Correct. But then again you could just write "Level 2" on them with an erasable marker.
