Miniatures Kitbash Korner. ;)
« on: 26 November 2011, 13:55:19 »
I thought it would be cool to have a thread for all the kitbash projects, to see what folks have done to mod their minis.  :-\

I'll encourage everyone to post your kitbashes on this thread, it will be interesting to see some of the more creative ideas.
(BTW, please no rehash of the unseen vs reseen debate here please)

I'll start off with an idea I had for a mod of the Hammerhands.

I needed a Warhammer for my Regulan Hussars, but not the unseen version.
However I wanted to get a mini that looks more like the unseen Warhammer, as I really don't like the looks of the new reseen Warhammer that much. (it looks too gangly and like it's carrying a couple of guitar cases. :P )

I decided to mod the H-Hands arms to look more like PPCs, so I thought of using Jagermech arms. I was considering cutting off the secondary weapons, but decided to leave them on. (It could be a 4L model...  :-\ )

(mod idea by LC, painted by Fritz  [notworthy] )

Not the best Painter or Modder. But occasionally I stretch my abilities.
But I'll share.
Marauder MAD-9M2

Ceasar CES-4S

Both of which have found their way into THOMAS HOGARTHS command lance.

And the Arrow IV Regulator

Thanks to a Bushwackers Missiles.

What did you use for the Caesar and the Mad?
The C got a BFG (big freakin' gun) did you just add two missile packs to the Mad?

Only three mods in a wide field of already painted minis. Testimony to few spare parts to use.

First one is only slightly modded. A Rifleman 6X/7M. I don't know what those wings should be good for, so i decided to go with the good old roundscan radar. Used a piece of plastic sprue and filed it to fit its new role. And with additional parts in the box, why not using them? Added magnets to refit my mech as needed.
Camo is part of the 4. Oriente Hussars.

Second was more extensive. Refitted a Stiletto to be a -4B. Sawed off the SRM tubes, splitted them and realocated them as medium lasers. Sawed off most of the LRM keeping only a small piece as part of the new large laser. Large laser itself is another piece of plastic sprue filed down to fit the job. ECM dome was part of a Bandit pack, antennas are bristles from a toothbrush and i forgot what was used as chinmounted flamer.
Camo is part of the 14. Donegal Guards.

The Mad arms got attached without the adjoining bit of metal. And the missle packs off the loki filed to fit the location.

The Ceasar had the MPL cut form one arm and stuck to the opposite one.
The Heavy guass is a bit off a random imperial Guard gun. And the two torso lasers where left over form one of the clan fighters.

Harry that Stiletto is Awesome. looks a lot meaner than it should.

The most intensive rebuild was a Daishi re modified to be a Daishi B. Sawed the right leg for a stretched position. Filed down the LRMs to accept the four AC2 (i went with the original description instead of the sheet). ACs are made of a piece of wire and a carefully drilled piece of copper rod. Both arms were cutted, the lasers of one were stripped to act as bases for the PPCs and pulse lasers. Rest of a AC was used as core of the remodeled LB-X. LB-X and PPCs were sculpted with a green stuff equivalent.
Mini was part of a mini scenario. The epic scene when Victor Ian Davion-Steiner tried to catch a Gauss bullet from Adam Steiner with the head of his modified Daishi. So this one is painted as part of the 10. Lyran Guard.

I've grown quite fond of the PPC Cicada so threw this mod together.
It lacks the Jumpjets but I can tell it apart from the other Cicadas in the Rangers.

All very cool stuff.  I don't do much kitbashing myself; a bit here and there, but almost none of it's canon.  Here are a couple of favorites though.

Word of Blake 40th Shadow Division Prolietor and Infernus

Grey Death Legion Marauder 2

Star League Gauntlet 2

Clan Blood Spirit Gladiator H

When in doubt, take it out.

Justin, who could ever get sick of looking at those? I just keep kicking myself that I never have a decent amount of spare cash when I see one of your beasts I really REALLY want at auction. Happened to me on the Thud IIC proto and the Orange Solaris Hammer and the N-scale Thud 1.5.

I can happily say that they'll have to pry your custom Phawk IIC from my cold dead hands though. O0

I don't do all that many conversions or re-poses, but I am trying to do more these days.

A dragon repose that I did a few years ago. I regret not spending more time on the details, but it was tough enough
using the old "scaly" dragon:

Last year, I built a TDR_9NAIS, using the base TDR-9M sculpt as the base. (I didn't have one of the IWM NAIS scultps, and it's archived now):

I have a Nova-A which I recently built, and is currently waiting for paint:

Fianlly, an old gem which I bashed together around 12-15 years ago out of old minis and spare parts:

One of these days, I'll clean it up and give it fresh coat of paint.

Cut the legs off a BattleDroids Behemoth and kitbashed in the legs off a reseen Marauder to help make the Behemoth look more like the Macross M.A.C. II Monster it was modelled after. Just got to paint it up now.

There once was a pic up on an old incarnation of the S7 galleries which was of a kitbasked Unseen Crusader in the heavy guass variant and in lyran guard colours, wish I could post it, but it was lost with my computer crash...

the base mini was a MWDA thor. the right arm came off of a gundam mini. the guns on the right arm came from a Votoms trooper. the left arm is off a MWDA rifleman. the torso cannon....i'm not sure. probably an Armored Core or Front Mission mini. the two smaller torso guns are just brass tubing.

thank you, Blacksheep. love the conflicting passion!  ;) ;)

Pretty much everything I do anymore is reposed, so I'll ignore those...

First is a custom Ballista Tank

and a custom 40 Ton Rogue

This Marauder was made from a Reaper Nightshade and Marauder IIc legs

Possibly my favorite, this RFL-3N Rifleman was made using a Reaper Chancellor's torso and a Patriot's legs

Speaking of the Patriot, this is what one looks like (Image courtesy of Camo Spec Online - Artist: Ogre)

Believe it or not, this SHD-2K Shadow Hawk started out as a Patriot

This Goliath got a make-over

THAT is what the Reseen version should've looked like! What are the odds you could be commissioned to build another like that?

Sadly, not good... While my ego is going "Yes, yes, yes! Take commission", logic is reminding me that the last guy I offered to do a mech for waited over three years to get it, and I felt guilty every time I worked on any mini but his.

Having said that, I am not shy about sharing what I did. Granted I bashed this Goliath 4 years ago, but I think I can remember all the parts and would be more than willing to discuss it. Instead of high-jacking this thread, anyone interested is welcome to PM me an email address and I'll get back to them there. If enough people are interested, I'll necro the old thread and add the instructions there.

Orion that I bought off Ebay missing the right arm - fixed using 2 LRM15 lauchers from moulded Thuds.

Locust that was missing Med Laser and Arms - replaced using cut down AC5 from an unseen MAD for ML, 2 Missile pods for amrs from a Thor.

Wow there's some nice work in this thread! Maybe those kitbashes get a bit of extra lovin?

Here is my contribution. A small mod to a Raptor II to add a TSEMP cannon for a RPT-2X2 variant in Stone's Liberators colours.

(I'm not totally happy with the photography as the "midnight blue" looks more like a dark grey.)

LOVE  that wee beastie !!! ;D O0 ;D O0 ;D

I've been contemplating how best to use either a 1N or a 2N to make three different versions: a gatling-style Ultra AC20 version, a short barreled demolition-gun style LBX AC20 version, and a dual (actual, not srm-6) LRM launcher version.

The main cylinder is an actual small stick that I cust to size with an x-acto knife, and then I made the roots with little snakes of green stuff (and then painted).  Aside from looking cool, the green stuff roots make the stump resistant to breaking off.

Decided to post a couple of my recent conversions. First one is a Caesar, second is a pack of Crabs and Fleas. All three models are converted out of Earthsiege minis I had lying around.

Fascinating! I feel I should recognise the source minis - Earthseige?

Small note on the otherwise excellent Cataphract - I'd bulk out the waist around the torso weapon, to make it look a little more integral. You could thicken the waist both sides. But I've never seen a more righteous-looking Gauss Rifle on a Cat O0

And yes, the Fleas do look like excellent Ospreys :)

Does any one have recommendations for what you use as a " standard" Guass or PPC for your Kitbashing? I love the Highlander IIC's gauss arm as it LOOKS like a massive gun that would wreck you but many other models have Guass rifles which are writs mounted and look tiny. Same with ER PPC's what do you use when you kitbash those?

These are a couple of years old. I finished them for the first annual FlintCon back in 2015. (Pics are new. :) )

Magistracy of Canopus

First, the Sha Yu SYU-6B. Pretty easy. Large lasers came off. Plastic tube went on for the Snubbies.

Cataphract CTF-4L. Another easy one. Medium lasers were clipped off the back (Not shown in the picture.) A second medium laser was added to the right arm with a piece of plastic rod and some green stuff. The AC barrel was extended and squared a bit with some green stuff for the Gauss Rifle.

Eyleuka EYL-45B. A little harder. The MML had to be filed off the left arm (Which was good because... it looked molded wrong.) The Snub PPC is a piece of plastic tube (Quick note. Same size as the ones for the Sha Yu) with some green stuff to mount it. It *looks* like it is shoulder mounted, but if you look carefully, it is only attached to the head.

Crusader CRD-8L. Not happy with this one, because after I finished it, I found the actual artwork for it. D'oh. Torso lasers cut off and filed flush. The old launchers on the Popeye fists were filed flat. Holes drilled for the MMLs. Tube drilled in for the Plasma Rifles, with the medium lasers being a dollop of green putty and rounded. I'd consider resculpting this in the future, using the new artwork as a basis for it.

Raven RVN-4Lr. Quite happy with this, though I'd have done the MML's differently in hindsight. Scultped the box over everything on the torso with some greenstuff. Filed to sharper edges. Then crafted the "arm" around a piece of wire for the ER Medium on the left arm.

Marian Hegemony

Catapult CPLT-C5A. Used liquid green stuff to fill in the excess holes. Added an detail on the edges of the LRM launcher to represent that it is an Artemis system. Filled in the large torso gap where the LRM launchers fit with greenstuff and patience. I still prefer the more classic Catapult body shape, but this is an okay replacement. If I were to redo this, I'd probably cut the sides of the launcher away, instead of filling in the holes, and I'd use some plastic or putty to extend the length of the launcher boxes.

Commando COM-2Dr. What can I say about this one? Filled in the torso SRM launcher. Used greenstuff over the arm launcher. Drilled holes. This is probably one of my least favorites, as it was a rush job at the end. I'm not happy with the way the MML came out. Conceptually I like it. But it lacks the detail I would like to have had, and the spacing on the missile tubes is a little off.

Orion ON1-MA. Made it accurate to the TRO. Launcher is in the arms, not the torso. It *is* missing the SRM-6 and left arm Medium laser. Steiner fans might recognize the giant paddle arm as a Salamander's launcher. It was the right tube count. Looked good. I said, "Let's do this!!!" And did.

I didn't get pictures of some of my minor and unfinished bashes. Ti Ts'ang TSG-9J, both Dervish DV-6Mr, the Hollander head replacement with one of my spare Thunderbolt heads from the reseen, and the WIP Swayback (4SP).

I decided to average out all the parts used and round up.  Works out to 75 tons.   Bit lighter than i expected but it works with a 3025 starter loadout.  I'll decide on a 3050 and 3058 loadouts for fun later.

So the Wasp-waist and cockpit styling are deliberate.

And yeah, they're Earthsiege minis, like I mentioned in the other post. The small ones have wavered back and forth between Locusts and Fleas in my head for a while, but they're just too small for me to call 'em Ospreys. I've re-armed a couple to better reflect the Flea, and working on bashing jets onto the legs of the other two for Troopers.

Here are my bashes.

The first picture you can see I changed the position of the right arm on the Thunderbolt into a forward firing position. The Rifleman I got in a trade and all of the barrels were broken off. So I bashed it into the dual AC-10 variant (arguably one of the best 3025  variants)

The second bash was for a kitbash contest wayyyyyyyy back in 2002 -ish? It took 30 hours to make, but it was worth it. It is Plogs Kraken III. With the drawing that Plog did as my only reference.

I am looking at molding a Patriot, removing the Arrow IV launcher and replacing it with an LB-20X, does anyone have a good suggestion what kind of arm I could use?

I could cut the missile launcher off just below the elbow, but I need a lower arm With a big cannon.

Well, I just picked up a Cronus. The RA looks like a high-end ballistic without being >too< silly (Thunder, anyone?). You could also try the Crimson Langur arm, although I'm not sure how well that would mesh with the Patriot's torso.

How about the  left arm off the Grizzly, or the left arm off the Orion (with a little modification).  Either of those could pass as an LB-20X I would think.

Pretty sure that an LB-X 20 in the arm means no lower arm actuators. So a Thunder arm, with some barrel extension to make it look a little less silly?

Ok, I apologize if I'm out of line, but has anyone seen a kitbash Archer - Orko on the web?

I have 5 unseen Archers and really don't care for its arms.  I would really like to do the same as that kitbash but not sure where those arms come from....maybe a Loki?

If anyone has a recommendation, I'd be interested.

Is there really anything that could make the Thunder arm look less silly?  ;D
I was also thinking perhaps something like the reseen Thunderbolt gun arm, or maybe even a Highlander IIc arm?

Thanks for the recommendations folks, looks like I'll be playing musical kit bash soon. ;)

And I do have a Thunder, which will be getting the Patriot missile arm. (As the Thunderbolt missile variant.)  8)

Thunder, circa first-printing of TRO3055 (1992?)
** Note - yes, that is a .22 shell ;)
** Note2 - the early Archer arms can be popped off like pez from a dispenser.. I used the Archer mini because back then because they were plentiful (with no end (to the now "unseen") in sight), and it also was a 70-tonner. On this one, I kept the Archer's left arm. On one other (somewhere), I used a Marauder left-arm.

Here is my best work to date;

Trying to ape Shimmering Sword's work, here: http://shimmering-sword.deviantart.com/art/Battletech-Mackie-303563822

I'm not much of an artist, as you can see, but I'm happy with what I accomplished here.
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

Very nicely done, and a great interpretation of Shim's work!

W.

Thanks Worktroll. I'm not amazing at this, obviously, but Shimmering Sword's art was so interesting; I just had to make something like it.
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

Here is my best work to date;

Trying to ape Shimmering Sword's work, here: http://shimmering-sword.deviantart.com/art/Battletech-Mackie-303563822

I'm not much of an artist, as you can see, but I'm happy with what I accomplished here.

VERY nicely done!

What did you use for the missile arms? I don't recognize that.

Here are a couple of my own mad scientist knife jobs.
A Charger Kamikaze
And a Frankenmech, for a Periphery Militia unit, half Warhammer, half Thunderbolt, I call "Ragnarok".  😁
