Star Wars: Empire's Edge (RP)
« on: 17 September 2015, 17:05:30 »
A character focused roleplay set in the star wars  galaxy, 5 years before the events of A New Hope.

The Galactic Empire is at it's height, and only scattered and isolated resistance movements oppose its might. In the Outer Rim, the Imperial grip is looser, and much of life goes on with less imperial entanglements.

this thread is for RolePlay. please take non-roleplay discussions to the off-topic thread here: Star Wars: Empire's Edge (Offtopic)

A few ground rules:
we will be using the old EU (aka the "legends") continuity. although elements of the new canon from shows like star wars rebels can be added where it does not conflict.

This is a game of characters and their personal stories. not one of fleet actions and massive campaigns. players should restrict their roles and hardware appropriately. please approach this with a semi-serious attitude suitable to the setting.

in accordance with this, full blown Jedi are discouraged except as rare NPC's, although force sensitives and less than fully trained padawans should be ok.
the following NPC's are also offlimits, due to metaplot issues.. Luke Skywalker, Owen and Beru Lars, Yoda, Obi-wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Leia Organa. other NPC's from the films should be given appropriate plot armor.

-----------------
a quick primer on the timeframe of 5 years before the Battle of Yavin. ( 5 BBY)
The calender in use is the Great ReSynchronization Calender created by the Republic. it is written [year]:[month]:[Day]. 5 BBY = 30:3:##–31:2:##

The Rebel Alliance does not yet exist. it will not form until 3 years later (2 BBY). instead there are many resistance groups operating independently, such as the Alderaanian Resistance, the Chandrillian Resistance, the Corellian Resistance, etc. these are primarily insurgent and/or pirate forces with limited direct combat capabilities. those which have attempted to conduct open warfare against the empire have always been crushed. there are few organizations that are not tied to any specific world, such as the Rebel Network, the Antarian Rangers, and others, but these are often even weaker in terms of direct action capabilities, though they do often offer the ability for the different groups to share information.

the X-wing, A-wing, and B-wing do not yet exist. however their predecessors the Z-95X Headhunter, H-60 Tempest, and R-22 Spearhead are available and in use.
the TIE Interceptor has not been developed yet either.

Dantooine System

A small blocky, ungainly ship drops out of hyperspace in a blur of pseudo-velocity, and heads to a distant pale green world. Three vaguely diamond shaped vessels move intimidatingly towards it.

on board the small ship, the pilot turns in his seat as the comms crackle and become a voice in a strong imperial accent. "This is the Imperial cruiser Dominion. You have entered a restricted approach lane. Unidentified craft, identify yourself and present your clearance."

Hitting a control, the pilot responds in a softer voice. "This is the Courier vessel "Vision of Speed", carrying Medical supplies for Resettlement Camp AA23. Clearance and Authorization being transmitted now" the pilot presses another control, and leans back in its his seat.

'An old early model Arquitens-class light cruiser and two Gozanti pocket carriers. kind of a weak patrol for a world this close to a major hyperlane. guess the empire doesn't consider this area of much value.' he thought to himself as he waited for the Imperial ships to vet his credentials. thankfully the details are true. always hide a lie within a truth. turning his head to look at the crates that had been cluttering up his small living space for this trip he thought to himself 'I am carrying vaccines and medical supplies to the camp. it's just not everything i'm carrying.'

"Courier vessel, your flight plan is authorized. Do not deviate from your course"

"Affirmative Dominion, much appreciated"

-----------------

Camp AA23 was a large concentration of huts, tents, pre-fab buildings, and converted  shipping containers. home to thousands of people displaced by the Empire. the only proper structures in the camp were the landing pads and port buildings at the center of the sprawl. The ship, a G-1A Long Range starfighter, set down on one of the outlying pads and opened it's aft hatch. The pilot, wearing a ship's jumpsuit and nerf hide spacer's jacket, paused at the hatch. "Emkay, start unloading the cargo, i need to go meet our contact" behind him a diminutive pit droid gives a exaggerated salute and then turns back into the ship.

"Garen, my friend! it has been too long." a tall Ithorian, his skin greying with age, was approaching across the Tarmac, his vocoder rendering the otherwise inaudible tones into clear, if slightly robotic, basic. "i hope those imperial butchers in orbit didn't give you any trouble?"

"No Cobb, they accepted the credentials easily enough. though i wonder how you managed to get the Alderaanian medical guild to hire me for the run." Cobb was a old associate of the Antarian Rangers, a once great scientist during the old republic forced to give up everything under the Empire. somehow he'd wound up in camp AA23, and had become a rather important figure to the refugees.

Cobb laughed in his rumbling stereophonic way. "i still have some connections you know. but it gave a good cover, didn't it? thankfully the Empire doesn't care much about us down here. aside from regular supply runs like these, and annual inspections, they've mostly left us alone."

Garen shrugged. "well, you've got a full shipment of medical supplies here, should cover the camp for a couple months. and i brought the special shipment you asked for as well. did you bring a way to move the crates?"

"i have a speeder bike parked over there." Cobb points off to the side of the landing field. "it can tow them to the warehouse. your welcome to come along to my place so i can give you payment for my special supplies."

Breaking Orbit from Dantoonie
Gozanti-class cruiser Imperial Patrol Ship Solid Light

Captain Hal Lockton tapped his officer cap as his navigator squawked as the ship prepared for hyperspace.

"The Dominion makes us wait ten minutes past our departure because they detected an unknown hyperspace entry. I swear if I was captain of this ship, I'd tell off the Dominion calls a captain for making us wait for nothing but a medical supply ship," rattled off the lithe female Naboonian.

Lockton stood up in his crisp officer uniform. "Contact me right before we come out of hyperspace, Lieutenant Arl. You have the bridge until then," ordered Lockton. Twisting his head, the captain of the Solid Light looked at a black astromech droid. "R3-78, makes sure Padme stays on task as well. We don't want another situation like when we nearly exited near the corona of a star."

That brought for a bit of a squawk from Lieutenant Padme E. Arl. "But Lieutenant Commander Lockton, we found the pirates easy that day."

Taking off his cap to reveal his blue eyes and brownish hair, Lockton didn't turned around to face Arl. "That's because they detected our distress beacon. It's only by some sort of divine joke that the Tie Fighters weren't damaged by that solar flare that shut down seventy percent of the ship. Regardless Lieutenant, I do not want to come back after I rest to find half the bridge on fire as you panic,  Pig pen nonchalantly suggests that things are fine, and the rest of the crew runs around like headless Rancors."

And with that Lockton left the bridge with a swoosh of the door closing to indicate that he had left. Lieutenant Arl merely muttered as the droid beeped in amusement at the navigator.

That elicited a response from Arl as she pulled a lever. "Sure, he complains now, but who got us a commendation for catching those pirates."

As light seemed to streak together into a blinding singularity, the droid responded back almost laughing.

"Okay, so it was the captain who somehow captured the pirates using the Tie Fighters and our stormtroopers. However, who was it that alerted him to the situation, huh? That's right, me" nearly sang Padme Arl. She dramatically posed now that the ship was in hyperspace going to their next destination with her left hand curled next to her heart as she extended the other one upward.

The droid just shook its head in disbelief.

Cobb's bike was an Undicur jump speeder, which towing half a dozen repulsor-crates would have been slow enough in it's prime, but this one was old, beat up, and evidently patched together from three different vehicles by the faded paint. and it groaned like it's repulsor's were in need of re-tuning. but it only took a minute to drag the crates over to the supply warehouse, the guards by the doors clearly recognizing Cobb. "We used to have issues with Pilfering, since the Imperials never bothered to guard the supplies. now we have a civilian watch to keep the riffraff out."
getting to Cobb's place took not much longer though having to weave around on the ill-planned paths and streets of the camp made Garen nearly fall of his perch at the back of the bike. Cobb's place was inside an old shipping compartment, which had been half buried in the dirt. a few windows had been cut into the sides, and the roof had several large tanks on it and a few small tree's.

"come in, and bring the last crate. i'll get us some refreshments"

the interior of Cobb's house was green. not the walls, but the plants which about filled the space. vegetation from a multitude of worlds, on racks, tables, even the floor. and pipes and mister's everywhere keeping them alive. Garen pushed the crate into a fairly clear area, and keyed the code to unlock the crate. as Cobb came back with a pitcher and a few glasses, Garen told him "brought what you asked for. hope it's worth the risk."
Cobb blinked in amusement. "it should be." putting the pitcher and glasses down on a clear bit of table, he reached in and pulled out a book "The History of the Galactic Republic. this should help immensely with the teaching of the children. the Imperial textbooks are horrible. they spend most of their time explaining how the old republic was corrupt and why the Empire is better."

Garen shakes his head "yeah, but those old books are illegal to use now, so be careful."
Cobb nodded, the gesture looking odd because it wasn't part of normal ithorian body language, and required him to bow at the waist. "i will my friend. but let me pour you a drink then i'll go get your payment"

Solid Light in transit

Hal Lockton after checking with his engineer, Pig Pen, finally returned to his quarter plus office. "Pig Pen" had a distinct odor that no one could identify, but he often bathed in oil and other fluids by crawling through the Solid Light to keep running. Hal allowed his engineer to use his peculiar methods since otherwise he'd already be behind a desk on some ice planet counting the days until he was dead.

It was all because of one mistake to save the lives of two crews of Star Destroyers. It was in service of the Empire that he saved the crews from an Imperial Inquisitor who had nearly rammed them together to take down one freighter that might have had a Jedi on it. Thousand of loyal naval and army personal would have been killed to kill one Jedi. While his captain was being straggled by the Inquisitor through the Force, Hal took a rifle from a stormtrooper and fired a stun charge. The Inquistor fell to the ground, and Lockton ordered as acting captain to stop immediately.

He had been a hero to the crews, but he was soon brought before Darth Vader. The Inquisitor laughed as Lockton arrived. However, it was the Inquistor who was chocked threw the force before Lockton. Vader then told Lockton that he'd be rewarded but he must always remember his insubordination.

The Solid Light was not only his reward for acting to save two Star Destroyer, but it was also his punishment. It was a broken down wreck from the Confederacy of Independent System which had been refit barely for patrol duty. Though somehow thanks to trusting Pig Pen, he at the least had a working ship, but the rest of the crew was another thing. His operator Padme Arl had severe issues, and most of them weren't from being from Naboo. The astromech droid R3-78 could figure out faster routes through hyperspace, but his motivational circuits stunk. And then there were his pilots and stormtroopers.

It's best not even to think about that.

As Lockton sat down at his desk, he read the latest holonet report and letters. The reports were normal, but then he found a letter from an old classmate in there. For a moment as Hal read on, it felt as if a billion rational mind screamed and then were extinguished. "Who in their right mind made Numbskull Natasi an Admiral?"

It was at that point that Lockton walked over to the side of the room and pressed a button to slide out his cot. Perhaps sleep would make his life better.

Scout ship Nosy Neighbour
Exiting Hyperspace over Dantooine

"Alright, let's keep this smooth, Stet," Markos Actemra said to his co-pilot.  "I don't want any of these trigger-happy navy dregs using us as target practice on flimsy pretenses."

"Yes, Boss.  Nice and smooth," Mhar-Moh-Stet, a Tiss'shar of many talents, replied.  "Reverting to realspace."

The Nosy Neighbour, a slightly modified MRX-BR Pacifier scout vessel dropped out of hyperspace well within the boundries of the designated shipping lane for Dantooine.

"Unidentified vessel, this is the Imperial cruiser Dominion, you have entered restricted space.  Identify yourself," the old cruiser transmitted upon sighting the Nosy Neighbour.

"This is Imperial Scout Corps vessel Nosy Neighbour, arriving for check-in, resupply, and requested orbital scan.  Over," Actemra replied.

"Nosy Neighbour, your flight plan is recognised in the log.  Please transmit your current reports for retransmission to Ord Trasi and proceed with orbital scan.  Over."

"Roger, Dominion.  Transmitting reports and proceeding to low orbit.  Out." Actemra confirmed before turning to his co-pilot.  "So, any good eating around here?"

"I'm planning on bagging a kath hound," Stet replied.  "I hear they're gamy, but they can't be worse than the acklay that I had on Felucia."

"They poisonous to humans?"

"Only the scent glands."

"Well, I might try a bite, too."

"I might not want to share."

"Fair enough," Actemra acceeded with a shrug.  One does not attempt to steal the kill of a Tiss'shar, after all.  He straightened up and peered at the sensor readouts.  "Lets see what Dantooine has for us today."

Imperial Patrol Ship Solid Light
Outer edges of Angor

Gozanti-class cruiser came out of hyperspace near an Imperial Star Destroyer being escorted by several other Imperial vessels. As the Solid Light banked to come into communication range with Star Destroyer, TIE fighters from the small fleet did fly-bys.

On the bridge of the Solid Light, Padme Arl was panicking as the fighters flew incredibly close. "That's not procedure. Someone should give out demerits to those pilots," she stated in a mater of fact fashion.

Lockton walked in his beige uniform crisp along with command cap. "That has more to do with me more than anything, probably. Admiral Hord is not exactly fond of me, and he always reminds me of that fact."

"And we are delivering this message, why?" asked Arl shocked.

Lockton sat down and straighten up in his command chair. Hal Lockton spoke plainly and without an emotion next, "Because, it is our duty."

The captain of the Solid Light then pressed a button that opened a channel to Hord's Star Destroyer, Supreme Will. Padme was about to respond while Lockton motioned his hand to zip it to his subordinate. Thankfully, it was audio only.

"This is Imperial Patrol Ship Solid Light delivering secure information to Admiral Kelton Hord on the Supreme Will. Transmitting authorization code now."

Lockton sighed. The response of the Supreme Will came quickly since they knew that the Solid Light was coming. "This is Supreme Will, Solid Light. You will dock and your commanding officer will be escorted to give the information to the Admiral personally upon docking."

"Understood," sighed Lockton. As Padme Arl and R3-78 plotted the ship forward, Hal Lockton just wanted to get this meeting over with.

Listening to an Ithorian talk for long periods could create a headache even in a Droid. and the homemade Jet Juice Cobb brewed wasn't helping to dull the pain much.
"Cobb, As much i love catching up on your research and getting your take on current galactic events, i do have other business i need to get to, and soon. you do remember that this was just a side trip away from my usual work, right?"
Cobb stared into his mug. "I don't get many visitors from offworld you know. and while i know you have more important jobs for the Rangers, can you blame me for wanting to enjoy the company of a friend for awhile?" Cobb extricated himself from the salvaged landspeeder seat that served as a chair. "let me go get the items my people salvaged from some ruins nearby here."

"ruins?" Garen hadn't seen any ruins while flying in.

Cobb's voice came echoing out of the next room. "yes. really old ones. from the old, old Republic. thousands of years old. massively overgrown and half buried. i think you might want to inform your bosses about them, from what i was able to translate from the remaining markings and relics these were just a small sattelite outpost of a much larger complex elsewhere on the planet. might be worth checking out. We've been converting the old stone structures to hidden storage areas and emergency shelters. though digging the escape tunnels took some time, and we only have a few that reach there so far."

"good idea. if the ruins are so hard to find, you could hide quite a few people." It was a good idea. If Garen had more time, he'd have asked Cobb to show him to these ruins, make a few suggestions. "But why do you think my bosses would be interested? we've got plenty of hiding places already."

Cobb walked back into view, carrying a largish bundle wrapped in a worn cloth tarp. "because unless i'm getting older than i feel, and my eyes are failing me, this outpost was built.. by Jedi."

Cobb carefully placed the bundle on the small table, and started unwrapping. the first thing revealed was an old cloak still in a dirty but intact sealed storage wrap, and some dirty looking pieces of old armor.

hearing no response, Cobb bent his hammer-head to look at Garen, seeing narrowed eyebrows deep in thought.
"yes, The jedi. though it appears they left rather quickly, we found some signs of battle, and there was a great deal of equipment left behind that would not have been left intentionally. though thank the divine forest that we found no bodies. not even signs of them. What ever attack that caused them to leave, either they took no losses.. or their dead were treated with respect and given proper burial."

setting the large chest armor aside, Cobb reached in and pulled out a large cylinder. "there is the armor you see here, and this cloak and a robe, found in one of the quarters, some various personal effects. but this one i think you will be most interested in." Cobb carefully held it out, and Garen gingerly took it. It was capped in silvery metal on each end, but its center body seemed to be made of a dark blue colored stone veined with white. on closer look, it was not a solid mass, but rather thin plates carefully set into the metal tube's exterior, and carved with faint swirling ridges. a curved metal plate of darker metal covered half of one end. a faint button could be seen, the seam barely visible.

Garen felt in awe. "this is a lightsaber. and one that clearly meant a lot to its owner. Jedi make their own lightsabers. this amount of workmanship would have taken a long time."

Cobb closed his eyes. "may the jedi this belonged to rest in peace. when this was found i made sure that no one else touched it, to ensure proper respect was given."

"Have you used a scanner on them, checked the condition?" holding a piece of history in ones hands was intoxicating. yet these relics felt, familiar somehow. even though he'd never seen them before.

cobb shrugged. "I had them examined with a hand unit. that, and a few other items we found, still had some power left in them. though i think this other item might be of more value to you Rangers." Cobb took the last item from the bundle.

It was.. odd. it looked like the casing to a droid brain's memory unit, but it was sealed inside a translucent crystal Pyramidal container, with gold filigree patterns on the outside. Garen carefully set the lightsaber down on the table, and reached for the item. "what is that?"

Cobb set it down on the table. "i do not know. i believe it may be a memory unit of some kind, but i have never seen its like.

As garen touched the pyramid, it began to glow, the top point of the pyramid began to open, then suddenly the room filled with a holographic display.

----------------------------------------------------

High above Dantooine, a large patch of space suddenly became a grey dagger plunging right for the planet, as the Vindicator Class Cruiser Interrogator emerged from hyperspace.
On board the bridge a dark figure stands, hands clasped behind its back, clad in armor of dark red. a man with Captains insignia on his uniform carefully strode up to report.
"The signal remains strong, and we have identified its source. As per instructions, i have dispatched an assault force to investigate the signal, and eliminate all witnesses. But, i do not understand why we are investigating a signal on such an ancient and unused frequency, or why this.. mandalorian signal warrants such extreme measures."

the figure does not turn to face the officer, instead replying in through the voice distorter in its helmet, it's voice harsh and completely unrecognizable.
"It is not your place to question the reasons for this mission, Captain. Lord Vader and the Emperor desire it to be carried out. Your job is only to obey and ensure the orders are carried out to MY satisfaction. Lord Vader has informed me of what it is that is sought here, and that is sufficient. Have my Fighter prepared, i shall attend to this mission personally."

The officer stiffened and saluted. "Yes, Inquisitor."

Admiral Hord's Office
Imperial Star Destroyer Supreme Will

"That's all, Lieutenant Commander," waved off Hord from his opulent desk.

Sitting behind his desk made of some of finest marble on Corella, Hord sat in contrast to a former teacher of Lockton's. Luxury is good when it doesn't dull the mind, his instructor had mentioned time and again when someone asked him about his art collection. Fine wine from Alderaan swirled in the glass as Hord looked at contempt at Lockton.

Hord had become as dull as a butter knife.

"Are you sure, Admiral? I came here to deliver that message as ordered personally to you," asked Hal Lockton a bit confused. After docking, it felt like he had been escorted by a battalion of troops as if he was an enemy of the state.

Hord laughed. "Of course, Lockton. There is one more thing that I need you to do before you can return to Bastion to get that ship that you captained some dock time." Hord after looking briefly at the message that he had received. "I need you to return to Dantonnie, and deliver these orders to the Dominion."

Not showing any emotion, Lockton waited until Hord was done finalizing and sealing his orders before he answered. "Thank you, sir." Stormtroopers then lead Lockton away.

"Also remember Commander Lockton that you can't just disobey commands," laughed Hord.

Lockton was glad to be back on the Solid Light. He got back into his captain chair, and he sighed. "Lieutenant Arl, prepare the ship to leave. We have new orders."

"Hopefully, it's to return to Bastion and get repairs," said Lieutenant Arl. She began get clearance to leave the Star Destroyer.

"No, we are returning to Dantooine to deliver more orders."

Pigpen came on the comm from the engine room since he had been . "My baby really needs some downtime. The hyperdrive will hold together, but I'm not going to guarantee that she will be as speedy until she gets some tender love and care."

Lockton sighed. "If we can get to Dantooine and back to Baston, it can hopefully get enough time to rest."

It was Padme Arl who brought Lockton out of his discussion. "Sir, we are ready to jump to hyperspeed when ready." They were already out of the Supreme Will. As they passed a Nebulon-B escort frigate, Lockton nodded.

"Jump to hyperspace!"

And then the the patrol ship jumped to hyperspace.
