The pressurized, crew-accessible part of a WarShip is probably pretty small compared to the volume suggested by its outer appearance. We discussed WarShip layouts in another thread, and I maintain that you should imagine BT spaceships pretty much like submarines, as opposed to the vacuum-filled zeppelin airships you're magining.
Not to mention the difficulties of evacuating crew sections of the vessel to vacuum, then sealing them against pressure from outside when they were built for being pressurized from the inside.

You could have the crew start jumping out with parachutes on the way down. That way they aren't killed by the force of impact or the ship collapsing all about them. Even without parachutes they have a better chance of surviving their own impact than the warship's.

Why would a spaceship have parachutes?

Jumping out in parachutes while the engines are farting out megatons of heat per second is sort of a "moth in a bonfire" situation, too. ;)

Density isn't an issue - given the listed masses and dimensions, they're made of cardboard covered in mylar anyway ;) Most DropShips could float comfortably, albeit unable to take off again.

At the end of the day you're worrying about mass, cross-section facing in the direction of travel, and speed mainly. Venting air would limit potential internal fires caused by structural damage.

If you're WarShip is starting to fall to earth...that's when you send the crew to the escape pods/escape boats and hope they can get clear.

(Honestly though, if it becomes clear you're going to hit the interface hex row and there is nothing you can do to prevent it...that's the point you should begin the "abandon ship" procedure...)
